Can you get lever actions? If you can't own semi autos I would do a lever action gun over an AR.

i vouch for this, lever action in 30-30 is better than both of these, i recommend Uberti rifles just because it's one of the best lever action you can get on the market, there's also other brands but avoid anything made by turks except the .22 plinker toys

Have a Sako in 30-06, great gun. Can't speak to straight pulls. 30-06 if you hand-load, .308 if you don't. 30-06 has greater case capacity, which gives your more flexibility for hotter loads.
