is there anything that can compete with the functionality of a stinger missile that doesn't cost like 150k per shot?
that's a shitload of money, and you might even need multiple to kill a helicopter.
is the stinger the platonic ideal of the manpad?
maybe you could go with some sort of optical only system running on hardware in the missile, and that could be cheaper?
how do "insurgents" kill helicopters? rockets on stationary targets?

When will someone invent an APKWS MANPAD launcher?
    >>

    >laser guided
i don't know how practical it is. but i could see adding a cheap guidance package to conventional rocket systems.
if you had something the size of an AT4, but guided, that would smoke. it's gotta be mechanically possible. is a rocket the best platform?

APKWS II only needs a laser during launch to indicate the target, then it's IR guided fire and forget.

    >rockets on stationary targets?
If you're good at it you can probably do it while its moving
But yeah that or a bunch of .50s

This is a poorly framed question which def I es definitive response.

Ukrainian interceptor drones can catch up to helicopters.

Like a freakin' modern-day Blowpipe or something? Yeah, that's probably not so great.
    >>
    >>65621074
Yes but using lasers to blind helicopter pilots is a war crime.
    >>
helicopters suck 50 cals kill them pretty easily

Back to the TOW idea but no wires
Have the user provide the lock-on and tracking rather than fire and forget
So the expensive radar and sensors aren't on the missile when it explodes

Something like an RBS-70 can, but it's only slightly cheaper per shot and isn't shoulder launched.

No, Blowpipe was MCLOS. Optical would be along the lines of the crap both Ukraine and Russia are pulling with guidance via computer vision.

Why was it only the brits who embraced this retarded concept?

I'm convinced that British equipment is bad on purpose because the officers actively hate the enlisted and don't want them to have anything good.
