why wouldn't this work?

Works on paper (interwebs).
>>
It would, with subsonic ammunition. But a suppressor is cheaper and easier and also greatly quiets a firearm using subsonic ammunition.

what if you prerecorded the gun's sound and played it back at the right time so it would work with supersonic ammo?
>>
theoretically? yes, if you would put a second source over the exact source of the gun firing noise, it'd cancel it out
the issue is that it's impossible - even if these two were literal points (they aren't, they're volumes heh), you couldn't literally superimpose one onto another. So even on this lowest level they'd be misaligned - which would result in there being areas of no interference and a lot of constructive interference, with SOME areas of destructive interference.
also, you'd need this pressure wave from the audio to be as powerful as the explosion, which, well, i leave to your interpretation what it could be

Yes but you need a speaker with the same volume and responce which wouldn't be easy.
With the pressure at the muzzle going from ambient to ~8,000psi near instantly you are probably going to need a gunpower driven speak to respond fast enough.

That's not the problem, the problem is that the source of the crack is not from the muzzle but from the wake of the bullet. You'd have to put a line of speakers along the path of the bullet from the muzzle until it drops below the speed of sound.

For a typical sound, the pressure fluctuate very close to ambient pressure, so a mirrored negative pressure wave is possible to generate.
The peak pressure of a blast shockwave is many many times of the atmosphere, the low can only go as low as the vacuum (0 is negative atm from 1 atm ambient). They would not cancel out at the muzzle.

Great point anon.

Why aren't these silent?

You have a compact speaker that can produce 140dB?
>>
>>65617842
Could you run another gun out of sync with the first to achieve destructive interference between both shockwaves?
>>

So we need a louder speaker yes?
