They need to make a 1mm bullet that leaves a 1" pocket pistol at 5,000 fps.

Not even a TIG welding rod costs that and they are far longer than you could ever use in a pocket pistol.

    5000 fps is like what…* 0.3 so 1700 m/s…
That's kinda Mach5 ish but also not impressive. Current tank rounds go that speed and a 1mm projectile will not carry that speed for long if not in vacuum.
If you think „i will go faster“. You know v^2 = energy.. Air resistance goes up squared, too.

This is not the eraser movie…

It's common knowledge that gun designers often take inspiration from their penises.
John Browning looked at his and designed the big, heavy and effective BAR.
Eugene Stoner looked at his and decided that 20 inches is ideal.
The guy that came up with the Zip .22 looked at his, made a gun equally dysfunctional and realized why his wife is acting so distant.
    OP looked at his and...

I think you could do it using some fancier propelant like cubane and using multiple charges that all nest inside the barrel to give as much acceleration as the barrel would allow.

AP rounds aren't legal on the civilian market, nor is making your own.

a 1 inch gun isnt going to be something you fire at more than 5 paces away.
    >>
    >>65616694
you're illiterate. barrel length is meaningless here. the fact stands that it's leaving the barrel at 5000 meters a second (which is the actual error, here. it should be feet per second)
    >>
    >>65617256
    Your point being?
    >>
    >>65615863
I like the idea, but I also suspect the bullet/barrel would not survive the rapid acceleration, even if you had the technology to achieve it in such a short barrel.

When the hydrogen develops sufficient pressure to burst the scored section of the disk, the hydrogen flows through the hole and accelerates the projectile to a velocity of 6 km/s (22,000 km/h) in a distance of about a meter.

NASA also operates light-gas guns with launch tube sizes ranging from 0.170 inches (4.3 mm) to 1.5 in (38 mm) at Ames Research Center.

I forget which it is, but there's a military scifi series where the primary weapon is a spool-fed rifle the cuts little snippets from whatever magic fucking material it uses and then accelerates it to mach yezus. So it's not a new idea, I think those books were from the 1970s.

then design the gun to fire molten metal at mach 5

    >>65619204
That's how guns are in Mass Effect 1, IIRC.

    >That's how guns are in Mass Effect 1, IIRC.
Almost but not quite. In Mass Effect the idea was that you have a block of your ridiculously durable projectile material that acts as a de facto infinite magazine and when the "bolt" cycles you're shaving off a tiny sliver of it (the size of "a grain of sand") and putting it into the "chamber" where the magic bullshittium field reduces its mass by orders of magnitude which means it can be electromagnetically accelerated to a non-trivial percentage of c before exiting the bullshittium field and regaining its mass while retaining its velocity. I've never played ME3 or Andromeda so I have no idea if those are any different, but in ME2 they work the same way except that Bioware (RIP in piss) swapped to a half-ass removable magazine system by flavoring them as disposable heat sinks.

    >>65619944
    >the removable heatsink "clips"
Mass Effect 1 was a goddamn sci fi masterpiece. From the story, the characters, the settings and artstyle all the way down to the weapons, armor, vehicles, and even mako.

My fucking face when it turns into Slop Of Duty, with Shepard calling the fucking thing a 'clip' after ripping it out and stuffing a new one in.
    >>
    >>65620210
In ME3 they even have the joke character, Conrad, comment on how fucking retarded the thermal clip system is from a logistical standpoint.

I'm so glad that the internet came around to my way of seeing that series after all these years. ME1 was amazing, lore wise. I played ME2 and the writing was in every wall, yet people still bought 3 and cried bloody murder. Idiots.
