If we magically deleted all of the land between the two and forced them to fight, who would win? Both empires would be at their strongest for the time period.
>>
>>65614629
Rome had more experience fighting enemies that aren't retarded steppeniggers or themselves(on top of also steppeniggers and themselves) and adapted to new enemies constantly, and were capable of putting together campaigns and defensive efforts fairly quickly therefor they would be at an initial advantage vs the Chinese who had a much more cumbersome system, however the Chinese had such a vastly larger resource pool in terms of manpower and logistics that they would grind Rome down eventually. If the war is a one and done dash for a decisive victory Rome wins. If it drags on and several seasons pass China wins.

Also of note that both locked horns with Huns and Persians and came out with similar lessons. And peak Rome would really be late 3rd century Rome with the proto-medieval equipment and a 1 million strong standing army, they looked nothing like that when they were militarily at their zenith.
>>
They would end up tag teaming Persians demanding unreasonable rates along the silk road and steppe raiders. There would be Aneas gets trolled by Sun Wukong for the entire journey home until they have a true heart to heart.
>>
>>65614629
Depends on the strategic goal each wishes to achieve. Territorial expansion? To what extent? Who's the aggressor? Is it sea battles in the med or long marches and battles across northwestern China?

NTA but I think it was more the fact that such distances allowed entire empires to rise and fall just about completely isolated from each other, coming up with unique governments, cultures, and militaries. Without it, everything would be a lot more same-y and that sucks.

Romans had field portable ballista that could fire 70 lb rocks. Almost all Chinese heavy weapons of that period were wall mounted.

Would be preferable to actually contribute to the thread like the anon above rather than bitterly screech about the Chinese.
>>

Oh how far they had fallen from the mighty pilum.
>>
>>65614629
Chinese crossbows are markedly superior, including to medieval European steel crossbows. They add a sear to the trigger+nut for more accuracy and have a 2-3x longer draw stroke. IIRC they had inferior siege engines, but then they had much thicker walls, canceling out any roman advantage there.

Tactical advantage in the field goes to China IMO.

How did Han cavalry compare to roman? Again very dependant on time period, but roughly
>early Rome, equites

>pretty good, the best horsemen in Europe with the best of roman equipment
>late empire, same auxiliaries + cataphtacts

Cavalry didn't gain prominence until the Mongols and Medieval knights. It was all about the heavy infantry which Rome and China excelled as. If both empires clashed, China will win in the long run due to better logistics, unified command, unified bureacracy and more manpower.

150 is Rome in the middle of the Five Good Emperors. Probably one of its highest points.

Han China is still a bigger enemy than everything the Romans ever fought, though by 150 it has some serious issues with the Han administration becoming more and more corrupt and unstable. Still, it's not really bad enough yet that the Romans can kick the system over with a bad campaign unless some truly crazy shit happens.

Frankly, I don't see either side truly decisively winning here. The Han aren't really up to projecting enough pwoer abroad to roll over the Romans, but they're also just too fucking big to be overthrown unless the Romans get exceedingly lucky.

Ironically the best move for the Romans would probably be to just do nothing and wait another 32 years for the Han court to dig itself deeper until the Yellow Turban Rebellion starts and we're off to China going into some really damn interesting times.

>muh cosncript levvies
You do realise conscript levvies can be trained into heavy infantry and equipped as such, retard? In fact, the Roman Empire was conquered in large parts by effectively conscript levvies with an emphasis on heavy infantry. Aka the pre-Marian legions.
>>
>>65616169
>excell or even heavily invest in heavy infantry
The Song and Tang both used heavy infantry. Song Bu Renjia armour was around 30kg in weight. It was composed of over 1,000 lamellar pieces stitched together with leather strips and fastened nails. They also faced Jin "Iron Budda/Iron Pagoda" cavalry which was extremely heavy and eventually had to change their entire tactic to become anti-cavalry in nature to defeat that. Which meant mass crossbow blocks coupled with halberds and I think even 2H swords. I do believe there were instances where the cavalry did dismount as well. Either way, China has lots of different periods, history and ideas and changing tactics and so on made different things happen.

Those things were NOT field artillery. The Romans used field artillery for sure, but they were smaller and you know, MOBILE. Vegetius mentions the Onager which was the more stereotypical one armed torsion powered launcher with a cup or sling, and also the Carrobalista, quite literally a chariot with a bolt throwing catapult like an ancient technical. Romans also experimented with horse mounted crossbowmen for the highest amount of mobile firepower possible.

>>
>>65614629
Given the infamous doctrinal inflexibility, strategic shortsightedness, and poor conscript discipline, I'd place bets on Rome at any odds better than 1:10. What China has that Rome doesn't is a nearly limitless pool of manpower to draw upon and zero consideration of its soldiers' lives, so if we're talking a sufficiently large beast, the Romans are going to retreat to defensive positions before they ever approach victory; that being said, if the legions retreat to defensive positions fighting for the survival of Rome, the Chinese are simply not going to be able to dig them out.

You mean like those roman conscripts that made up the legions pre-Marius? (Quite aside from that we're talking about the late Han here, where the military was de facto a standing force of long-time volunteer professionals even though conscription was technically still the law and could be used to expand the force rapidly.)

>Try a crossbow and light armor and helmet. Or a steel-tipped spear, large shield and medium-heavy armor and helmet. Retard.
Sure thing buddy, but sculpted figurines or royal guard do not represent the reality. The massive population of China was blessing and a curse, because resource scarcity matters, and it matters a lot. It you cut down a forest, it will produce the very same amount of charcoal, no matter what your population density is. China had steel, but couldn't scale production at all, the existence of shit like repeating crossbows is pretty fucking damning, because it means your average Chinese combatant couldn't even afford cloth armour, so yeah, literally half naked human wave armed with pointy (not metal) sticks. Even well off soldiers could have difficulty finding metal weapons, we heave sources for things like elite cavalry units using cupronickel spears.
