At least they remembered the face shield. The first run of Panzerschrecks didn't have one, the gunner had to wear protective gear and a gas mask because they'd eat rocket blast to the face. Legend has it that the shield wasn't optimal either and would kick back in the gunner's face, occasionally breaking noses. But then the Carl Gustav apparently causes brain damage, so who the fuck knows what's better.

always fun to see one of my stories get screencapped. Here's some other fuckery from that trip:
    >the EOD guy who came out to make safe the dud 155s turned out to be extremely gay and was lusting after me the entire trip. He gave me presents like his extra pmags which was neat and it felt kinda nice to be wanted, but shit was gay as hell
    >buddy went to open up a mystery connex in our compound that had just been sitting there and nobody ever opened it up, only to find it was filled to the brim with trash and shit from previous rotations. I guess they were trying to ship all their trash out or something but we had to clean it all up which fucking sucked
    >very liberal drinking policies got ruined when a fat bitch that everyone hated drank an entire solo cup of straight hennessy and wandered off to pass out on the perimeter wire.
    >had to perform a CASEVAC on a Security Forces K9 that ate its own flea collar, obviously no vets in theatre so a C-130 had to be flown in from Germany. Right as the bird touches down he fireman carries the K9 out of our vehicle and runs out to it against protocol screaming at us when we told him to get back in the truck "You don't understand bro, I got a downed dog that needs evac out!" with tears in his eyes
    >watched a Nigeren police traffic stop in town, their police cars are of course Hiluxes with a DSHK on the back. One cop gets out of the cab and hops on the gun, the other cop who makes contact with the pulled over car grabs a type 56, extends the bayonet, and walks up to the car at port arms
    >the Chinese tried to spy on us whenever we'd go off base but it never worked out because they're fucking chinese in the middle of nowhere africa. >driver and commander are never setting foot in a military vehicle ever again
The local chain of command will figure out what the fuck happened, and if the commander is incompetent, he'll be moved out of the job and given some desk duty for awhile. If the driver is a fucking moron, same thing, he'll get moved somewhere that he can't fuck up a high value vehicle. If it's ruled as a "shit happens" incident, then the crew and unit will get a lesson about what the fuck happened, why, and how to avoid it in the future.

I had a troop who got shit drunk right before he had to drive a bus and crashed it into a swamp in Florida. Apparently the bus was legit at a 45 degree angle in the ground.
Dude got the bright idea to not tell anyone and try and extract it himself and got his uniform muddy, so he stripped down do his pants and walked back to base to steal a wrecker. He ended up swimming the channel between Tyndall AFB and PCB, hopped the fence and infiltrated the base undetected, and only got caught because he tracked mud into the motor pool when he snuck in to steal the keys for a wrecker and somebody followed the footprints Metal Gear Solid style.
I wanted to send him off to SERE school or something but the commander wouldn't go for it and demoted him to E-1 and gave him a 45/45.

Yeah the dog came back a couple weeks later totally fine. Those Security Forces guys who were with us would later go on to completely shit the bed during the Manda Bay attack several years later if that gives you an idea of how retarded they were.
One time I was unloading a giant aircraft pallet of dog food off a bird and I accidentally stabbed the bag with my forklift and spilled kibble all over the ground. The airport fence immediately got swarmed by local kids who thought it was people food so we scooped as much up as we could and tossed it over the fence for them as they went apeshit and were attacking each other trying to grab handfulls. I don't think they had any idea.

    >I remember reading about a theoretical anti-tank guerilla tactic where you lay spray-painted dinner plates face down in the road to act as decoy mines and deter enemy armor
It's not just theoretical. The Hungarians successfully used that tactic in the capital city of Budapest during during the 1956 anti-communist uprising.
The armored columns were forced to stop and dismount to inspect the "mines", turn around and find an alternative route, or just gun it into a potential line of AT mines and hope for the best.
Dismounting obviously made the tankers vulnerable to the rebel small arms fire.
Turning around an entire armored column in the narrow streets in a medieval city is obviously a giant pain in the ass, the rebels did manage to direct a few armored vehicles into narrow alleys where they could rain Molotov cocktails upon them, which were highly effective against WWII/1950s tanks.

It may very well still be live.
These mines are made of soft plastic and filled with liquid explosive.
The detonator is triggered by the hydraulic pressure spike that occurs when someone/something treads on the mine.
In terms of sensitivity and what does/doesn't trigger the mine, they're quite different from conventional AP mines.

    Geology fact of the day:
Much of Scandinavia is covered in thick layers of quick clay, which is in turn covered by a thin crust of topsoil.
Heavy rainfall or snowmelt can saturate the underlying clay with water, washing out the sea salt that gives the clay structure and reducing it to a sludge with the consistency of porige.
In this state the clay can't support any significant weight, but the thin crust of topsoil often remains intact, obscuring the fact that material underneath is borderline quicksand.

It shows the driver so caked in clay sludge that he looks like he's some kind of mud golem, and it shows that he inside of the tank got flooded with hundreds of gallons of liquid clay slop.

This clay slop stinks of rotting fish BTW. Lovely.

You can't smell it unless you dig away the top soil, which is usually at least 5-10' thick.

The reason it stinks of rotting fish is that it's ancient seafloor silt.
During the last ice age Scandinavia was covered in giant glaciers of polar ice.
When these glaciers melted (around 15k-10k BC), the weight of the glaciers pressing down on the earth's crust disappearing caused the land to spring back up.
What was once the seafloor became this greyish blue clay, which is extremely fine micron-level particles held together by crystals of sea salt.
Even now, tens of thousands of years after it sludge on the bottom of the seafloor, the clay still smells like rotting fish and kelp.

The "get out of here STALKER" thing was a generic /k/ meme back in the day.
For a while /k/ was obsessed with the stalker games, and early builds of SoC had an amusing bug where one of the NPC's at the Duty faction base would constantly repeat the dialog line over and over whenever the player character entered the building he was in.

Likewise there was a bug where random roaming NPCs would say "Blowout soon, STALKER." which immediately triggered a blowout event that instakilled the PC. That was also a meme on /k/ for years.
