Yugoslavia only worked under Tito because his partisans completely liberated the country from the Germans/Shitalians and nobody wanted to become Russian vassals. Once the USSR fell and Tito died there was zero reason for the state to continue existing because they had no reason to unify against an outside threat and the historic connection to the resistance had ceased to exist. If the country was ethnically/religiously unified it would have stayed together after his death like China or Vietnam with some socialist in name only uniparty still in charge.
