    Short version of below:
    >who sells 20" M16 style barrels with FSB at a reasonable price? (bonus if not completely pencil)
    >would you do 1:7 or 1:12 for 55gr?
Seems I have a few choices and 1:12 is better for 55gr. Really a 500 and under rifle anyways.

Thanks anon >>65502206 for finding that upper; I haven't looked in a few days and accidentally let the thread die. I'll probably go with that upper and dig through my spares for the door and assist. I swear to god I had some dust covers I bought for next to nothing and I know of a way to refinish doors to match from AR15.com by phosphating them. I'll be looking for decent 20" barrels through the next few days. Not sure whether to go 1:7 or 1:12 but I think I'm leaning towards A2 profile for thickness/correctness. Should still be under 8lb all in or slightly over.

PS: Here, have some semi-rare 656 pics as I reply in this thread; unless you dig in forums, the results are always the same 5 B&W pics. They're not hard to find but it's taken me much longer than I care to admit to stumble across these.

Ok I'm done for now. I'll post a pic of the FSB as well later. Forgot this is early enough for teardrop. And no deflector but there's no way I'm getting that short of shaving a charging handle (sub $100 vs like $400-600 with labor). I'll throw it on the "later" pile.

    >>65515726
That looks better; hard to say. I think I might buy piece by piece, though. Trying my best to find a barrel with fitted FSB at a decent price; that seems to be about $200-250. Barrel on its own is cheap but then I need to install a FSB (~$20) and barrel nut (~$15) anyways. Looks like I might be able to get upper and populated barrel for about $300 plus shipping, then a bolt that redirects gas for a bit over $150, a charging handle for probably $15-25 plus ship, FA I may have or again it's cheap, and the door I should have. Brings it to about $500-600 all in? Just need to be aware of M4 vs not M4 feed when ordering. I'll probably need to go with an M4 feed barrel just because of my upper and reused lower.

I deal with a lot of antique restoration of 'non-provenance' related stuff. Which is to say I am decent with abrasive cleaning to restore functionality or mirror polish an old rusted $30 belt buckle, etc. I have always wanted to learn how to polish up parts of a gun, pistol specifically, to make it feel nicer. Is it literally just going over the parts to like 3000 grit + autosol/etc or even 15k micro mesh until it is super smooth? Or are polish/trigger/etc jobs really more like subtle dimensional changes, like slightly sanding down a part so it is more flat, or deepening part of a curve?
    >Are there any good sources for learning how to do any of this? Anything from feed ramps to triggers even something to make some mag releases smoother would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Somewhat related to OP's question
Does anyone have an idea where to get a pencil profile barrel that DOES NOT have the M4 extension and has the rifle extension instead?
It's for an A1 parts kit build.
I am not picky about the twist rate.
I tried ordering from Green Mountain's website, but it was acting up for me, or else I would just go with that.
    >>
    >>65524469
Are you aware the M4 extension is functionally just fine in a pre-M4 upper? The only bad combination is M4 upper receiver with pre-M4 barrel extension.
At first I assumed you knew it didn't matter, and were just compelled by clone autism to get it right. But then when you said "not picky about the twist rate", it made me wonder.

How simple is it to swap what caliber a bolt action is chambered in for something like a Bergara B14? Could I just buy one and swap the barrels or some shit to swap between .308/6.5 cm?

I didn't know that. I thought that you couldn't mix M4 and standard together, period.
    >But then when you said "not picky about the twist rate", it made me wonder.
I mostly shoot 55 grain, so 1:12 works for me.
It would be nice to have the option to use 62 grain, but it's not a big deal to me either way.
    >clone autism
I want to get it right, but close enough is good enough for me.
Retro stuff is a niche, so I may have to make do with what's available.

Should I be concerned about overgassing on a 16" AR that's usually suppressed? I haven't noticed any issues aside from excess gas near my face but some people make a big deal out the gas pressure and I also don't want to wear parts out prematurely. The gas block is fixed and the suppressor is lower backpressure but not flow-though. I'll take it out this weekend and actually pay attention to where the brass lands.
I don't want to cause problems running without the can by changing the gas tube, so should I get an adjustable BCG or do I even need to worry?
    >>
    >>65529337
No. To be fair replacing whatever wears out will be cheaper than the gasblock and time/ammo spent supposedly optimizing and timing it.

I'm hoping I already know the answer to this, but hence the thread I wanna ask anyway. So I was in the process of moving last month, I had about 2500 rounds of 9mm/5.56 in factory packaging, in their cardboard shipping boxes in my storage closet. I asked my dad to store the ammo at his place until I could get my new gun closet prepped. Him not really knowing much about ammo, stored all of it in his open-end garage for a month straight here in AL. So basically the ammo was inside its unsealed packaging, inside of cardboard shipping boxes, in 98% humidity for about 3-4 weeks.

Should I be concerned about corrosion or any issues? All ammo is brass and the boxes were never exposed to rain or anything, just the butthole of the south's heat and humidity for about a month.

Im looking to buy babys very first handgun. American. Primary usecases would be self defense in the outdoors and general practice with a handgun. My first thought was just to get a 9mm glock. Is this stupid? This would not be a bear gun (im too untrained to effectively defend against a bear with a pistol)
    >>
    >>65531406
Glock is Glock. You'll get more or less exactly what you expect. Nothing wrong with a Glock and they have plenty of upgrade options.
From me, if it's just going to stay stock, I currently lean more to CZ P-10s, as they feel in every way like a Glock 19 that's been just a little bit refined while not being more expensive (in my case cheaper than a Glock 19). Fewer aftermarket accessories and it has its own mags, but if you don't care about blinging out your gun it works good.
    >>
    >>65531406
I second the CZ P-10. I would get the C (Glock 19 size). It's cheaper than Glock and just as good if not marginally better.
    >>
    >>65529337
I would change out the buffer system for an A5 if running suppressed. Your gun will be fine without it but it really slows down parts wear and makes shooting suppressed even more pleasant. I use an A5H2 on my 14.5 and an A5H3 on my 10.5.
    >>
    >>65531406
    >a 9mm glock. Is this stupid?
Certainly not stupid, and the 9mm part is really just correct.
I would encourage you to go handle and preferably shoot several different pistols before you decide. Different hands and different handguns are shaped different, so the only way to know what gun fits your hand best is to try them. But for all factors other than physical fit, Glock is a very reasonable pick.
    >This would not be a bear gun (im too untrained to effectively defend against a bear with a pistol)
That's an odd thing to say, as opposed to something like "not a bear gun (I don't live in bear country)". If a bear attacks you, I would strongly suggest you shoot at it regardless of your training level.
Anyway, it doesn't matter. With the right ammo, 9mm is a great choice for black bears, and ok for browns. And even if you did want more gun, you still ought to have a cheap-to-shoot (i.e. .22 or 9mm) gun as well, so best advice is to get the 9mm first.

    >>
how important is kinetic energy for handgun rounds with regard to stopping power?
    >>
    >>65531547
Idk why I wrote that or where I read that; I must've been tired as the next day I read that and went "what the fuck did I mean by that?" I might've seen a video where 1:12 had a mildly better group for 55gr or something. I ended up going 1:7, "muh clone correctness" be damned because while I want it to look the part, it's getting whatever makes it function and shoot the best. It'll probably wear A2 furniture for this year since I just picked up a real beater set of A2 handguards. I'll also need to get an A1 lower probably next summer and find an upper without deflector once I find someone to modify an upper for me. I don't intend to neglect it but it's going to actually get some use in the woods and not just sit there looking nice collecting dust.

Ironically keeping it loose is usually worse for corrosion in the short term than the boxes, even with the acids in the cardboard. Dissimilar metals touching in humid air around an electrolyte = galvanic fun time. The factory boxes will keep the jackets from touching the cases and primers, especially if they have spacers.
It most likely hasn't done any damage in this little time. Pull it from the shipping boxes, check for moisture or softened boxes. Throw it all in ammo boxes with some dehumidifier packets. Pull and swap the packet in a month, spot-check for corrosion. If any of the original boxes are degraded, put them in with other rounds from the same lot so you can track any issues with it and use the loose stuff first. Light discoloration on the surface isn't a problem, crusties might be.
    >t. PNW-fag who's kept several thousand rounds in cardboard in a garage for almost a year without serious issues
    >>
    >>65531554
It matters, but less than most would think.

Old school advice is to carry at least 380 ACP, or try to shoot for the head/neck if using something weaker due to lower penetration/expansion. Magnum calibers like 357 or 44 are nice to have if you anticipate problems that walk on more than 2 legs, but you also need adequate barrel length to send them and you probably want adequate grip size to not injure yourself in the process too.

Realistically any gun is better than none, but 9mm is the standard and you are probably making sacrifices that aren't worth it if you go up. You should only go down if you want to carry a REALLY small gun.
    >>65531406
Glock is fine if you primarily want to stick to well traveled paths. I recommend trying a variety of pistols to see how they actually feel in your hands, shooting the top 5 and buying the winner. If Glock is it then great. If you end up with a CZ, Beretta, H&K or Ruger then it isn't really any worse.

What matters is that the gun you buy fits your hands/budget/preferences and shoots well for you. Not someone else.
    >>65531368
That's not an ideal storage method but open the boxes and see. If the brass turned all green or black (which is unlikely in 3 months) then that's bad. Shoot some and see if they aren't cycling like they did before, there are hangfires, duds or really inconsistent recoil. Pay close attention for squibs.

Also different brands and types of ammunition can have different degrees of protection from moisture than others due to primer/bullet sealant or packaging. Check the worst first. If that's fine the rest are probably OK. 22LR tends to go to shit way before anything else so start there.
    >>65525849
It requires using a giant armorer's block and wrench to screw the receiver off the barrel. When the new one is installed it also needs to be headspaced. This is not something you are going to want to do more than once and even then it's universally better (often also cheaper) to just get a second rifle.

    >>

Does it have a front sight block or is it a more modern freefloat handguard rifle with no irons? IIRC that affects which irons you'd need due to height differences. Carry handle has its own FSB height and flat tops have the F height front sight block. Freefloat with no front sight obviously comes as a pair so no height worries other than preference or dot height concerns.

Also I'd say irons are nice but I rarely use them. If you're going to hunt or compete or something with it (or depend on this rifle), consider putting BUIS on it. They weigh practically nothing anyways. Just get ones that actually hold zero and more importantly: ACTUALLY ZERO YOUR BUIS.

Personally I'm leaning toward voting for the Winchester Model 1894, with the reasoning being that we've got a very outdoors and hunting focused culture. Also, are any other states working on electing a State Gun this year?

Does anyone know a site with fast shipping that has Yugo SKS stripper clips (or at the least compatible non Yugo clips) in stock? My buddies want to shoot my SKS M59/66 this weekend and I don’t want to have to hand load it
    >>
    >>65551338
For a situation like that you should paroose a few LGS and check if they have any. Usually there will be a box in the corner somewhere with odds and ends. Shipping from anywhere is just going to take too long.
    >>65542197
You should because shit happens. Optics break or get knocked out of zero. A set of Magpuls doesn't cost much but it's nice to have if you're innawoods for a weekend and a screw for your mount goes Free Willie on you. Then you can just take the optic off and shoot with irons for the rest of the trip.
    >>
    >excuse me, good proprietor, but I would like to measure the width of your SKS stripper clips to determine if they are compatible with my friend's SKS
    >>
    >>65551391
That was my first thought, but I don’t think I’m likely to find them at my LGS. Of the two that aren’t absurdly far away, one is a zoomer hypebeast store and they don’t stock anything made before 1991 and the other closes right when I get off of work.

Noguns here, Why do modern guns like the AR15 still not have a more true in line with the barrel stock without the "boot" of the stock? If it exists what are they called?
    >>
    >>65549751
its ERDL. the webbing is kinda weird. its a M-1956 harness with an M2 medic pouch on either hip, with some kind of SMG pouch under them. Im not going to call it fictional because low slung pouches weren't unheard of at the time (bong SAS were known for their custom low FAL pouches) and japs tend to be pretty meticulous about this kinda thing, but its def nothing standard. contemporary grease gun pouches were either in triple mag form, or the doubles had only one large flap rather than one for each mag.
    >>
    >>65552989
Im not sure what you mean, AR buffer tubes are right in line with the barrel.
    >>
    >>65552989
They have to make the stock and sights unreasonably high if the barrel is going to be all the way down in the pocket of your shoulder, or you have to scrunch your head way down which isn't feasible for extended periods.

I know this is the least helpful reply but I've shot 55gr hornady vmax out of a wylde 1:7 16" and it shot pretty tight groups out to 100. Or what I'd consider tight groups. Never bought Winchester 55gr hunting ammo though. If it's what I assume it is which is a close clone of the 55gr vmax, it should shoot pretty good.

I shot some Fiocchi 40gr Vmax out of a 1:7 and had it keyhole before I figured out what the problem was. Would probably end up doing the same. Super lightweight projectiles like that are usually meant for bolt actions with 1:12 twist.

I've had that fucker almost 10 years. Nothing happened to it so far but I don't use any crazy oils, just automotive grade mineral oil which I try to keep off it as oil on rubber sucks to clean. Came with a used AR so IDK how much older the grip or rifle are past me buying it. It's been with me for quite a few miles of hiking around hunting. Very very comfy grip.

there's a lot of "it depends." if it's only surface rust it might only take light sanding to get off. if there are deep pits you start with 120 grit and work your way up. if it's really fucked up you might start by draw filing. a "polished" finish starts at around 420 grit. at around 600-1000 it's "mirror polished." above that is for fancy presentation pieces. the main thing you have to watch out for when polishing guns is to keep edges sharp. you have to keep your abrasive on a solid flat backing so you don't melt the edges. another challenge is screw and pin holes. sometimes it can be necessary to polish with sacrificial screws installed so you don't fuck up the holes but also don't mess up the real screws.

for trigger jobs there are two elements. one is the friction between sliding surfaces which is where regular polishing can help. the other element is the geometry of the mating surfaces where you have to change the angles. you have to be careful because sometimes filing a sear down to have a better angle will make it shorter which will actually make the trigger worse. if you go too far you can also accidentally make a machinegun.

Probably. Might want to throw that powder in a matching color Dollar Tree nail polish, maybe ideally a neon color. Make it the same color day or night. Also IIRC tritium Glock sights don't cost that much (relatively), like $120 or less maybe. Gun.deals it and see before you buy pricey glow powder you'll have to reapply eventually. Resin might stick better than nail polish; tritium is way easier though. Also I know it glows long but I'd have to wonder if it would glow long enough to be useful between being exposed to light or charging with a strong blacklight flashlight. Tritium would be less of a PITA; it only halves its brightness, what, every 10 years?

So, this happened over the weekend on one of the police scanner frequencies a few counties over from me. I figured it was fake off the bat because it addressed civilians without an emergency alert tone, and there were no other notifications anywhere else about it. The police later confirmed it's a hoax as well seeking info on who did it.
But I'm not well versed on tactical comms or anything like that, if there was an actual surface breach by an unknown submarine off the coast of the US, that was seen as a threat, would it be addressed with an emergency alert telling people to shelter like this?
    >>

I assume they do because every single other Yugo gun is built to a different proprietary spec for some reason. The M48 is incompatible with KAR98K parts and the M70 is incompatible with with the rest of the AK ecosystem

If you get some 357 in the mix that's perfectly fine. The revolver is rated to shoot it. Not like that's even a problem on the new production Pythons. The old ones would only have issues with high round counts of full power 357.
    >>65569850
Taliban parts kits probably not, Ukraine maybe. There's already precedent for ATF approving sanctioned Chinese guns (Tokarevs, Mosins and SKS) from Albania because they know for sure that deal doesn't benefit China at all. Border between Pakistan and Afghanistan is very murky so it could create a cash for goods pipeline supporting the Taliban who we are still not on good terms with.

I hate to say it but neither. I see USGI carbines hovering close enough to their prices that you might as well just stick with that. They have a secondary value in that they are genuine milsurp and the barrels tend to be in good condition (all original 30 carbine ammunition was non corrosive). The only reason to get an M1 carbine is for pure cool factor, and repros aren't as cool.

This needs to be qualified because there are a lot of different gun sticks of varying design, quality and condition. For the most part because they need to withstand the force of recoil they are tough enough that the subject's head will break before the stock does, however if it's a particularly flimsy stock or really worn out it could shatter. I've seen stocks crumble from just being handled because they were stored poorly.

    Muzzle loaders only.
Minimum caliber requirement is for deer and black bear is .44
But you don't have to use a 1776-spec Pennsylvania flintlock firing solid lead round balls.
Modern inline muzzle loaders with scopes 'n' sheit are allowed.
Modern projectiles and pelletized powders are allowed.
    >>
    >>65571815
It depends on how you hit them and where, and whether or not the rest of the gun is actually in the stock. Guns are great at absorbing recoil because the fibers run up and down the stock. Some guns have thin wrists or other issues and a really hard whack can crack them. Cheap wood like pine splits easily if you hit it wrong and the action can even work as a wedge to blow open the stock. Usually there's a bolt and/or a tang holding them together, but I've also seen a couple cheap guns snap in half when someone tripped while carrying them and dropped them on a rock or they got snagged and yanked by the sling.
The best chance for it to happen would be a hard sideways hit with the wrist of the gun across the back of the head while holding the barrel, instead of trying to mortar the butt into someone's skull like a sane-ish person.
    >>
    >>65571815
Depends on material heavily. Glass reinforced nylon? Urethane foam filled fiberglass shell? Urethane foam filled plastic shell (M16 A1/A2)? Wood? Kind of wood? Grain orientation, tightness, density? Design of that specific stock? Break action single shot shotguns often have weak ass connections, made worse by wear and oil. Direction it's being used to hit with? Butt first, unlikely. But IIRC some soldiers did smash stocks bottom corner of the butt first, swinging by the muzzle (bottom of gun to ground) to break the stock at the wrist to make them theorerically useless if captured or re-discovered by the side that lost them. I'm assuming you're either writing or way overthinking a self defense scenario?

I recommend the 'mere', which is a short club made from jade used by the Maori. Jade as a material fits the bill for what you want.

    >hard and impact resistant
    >used for thousands of years around the world
    >doesn't rot or degrade
    >millennium old jade artifacts have been dug up that look almost as good as new

Not bomb-proof, but if your guy started with a really thick club, he could probably split skulls for years, if not decades. As a weapon, the mere has provenience for being used by multiple generations to bonk with and has a lot of folklore that might be interesting for your story. Some highlights from the wiki page:

    >mere pounamu as the weapon of a chief or rangatira, was the most revered of all Māori weapons
    >these mere were passed through generations; they were given names, and were said to possess a spiritual quality or mana of their own
    >Considerable efforts were undertaken, often by an entire tribe, to recover or regain significant mere that were lost or stolen
    >Mere were buried with their chiefly owners, but were considered so valuable that they were later recovered from the grave during the second burial
    >It was considered an honour to be killed by a specially significant mere pounamu
    >Captives would sometimes volunteer their own mere pounamu as their means of execution rather than be killed by a lesser weapon

Is there an FFL on this map near you? My local area had a couple marked.
    https://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=772301#
You also might want to look into home FFLs that work with internet orders. Go on google maps and search after zooming in on your town for "FFL". I've found a couple that way. Another way that should be even better is just by going through the process of ordering something on PSA and not actually ordering it. Just get to the part that asks to select an FFL, put in your zipcode, and scroll the list. Even the smallest FFLs have current info on file or were used on file recently enough to still show. Then find wherever that model of Tikka is cheapest on gun.deals, give whatever reasonably priced home FFL(s) you find a call, and order and have one of them send whatever site it is their info with your order number. Usually you have to order, you get an order number, and the website provides a support or FFL specific email, fax number, or phone number for your FFL to send their info and your order number to.

Looks like something that is blowback. There's no locking surface and the overhang forward of the bolt face is to add mass. Not sure what it is exactly but think of some blowback operated SMGs/PCCs with square looking receivers and you'll probably get close.
    >>65584637
They sound like retards. Try a different dealer. General SOP for special orders is for the customer to pay for the gun when it's ordered, rather than when it's delivered. The only reason I can think why they wouldn't order something they wouldn't normally stock is because they're afraid you'll back out and leave them stuck with a gun they don't want and can't sell.
Either way if you buy it yourself and just have it sent to their shop for transfer none of that is their problem. If they still refuse to transfer a gun because it's not one they normally stock then they are total retards and should be avoided like the plague.
    >>65585598
They narrowed their offerings to guns that
    1) sell well
    2) cost little to make
    3) share tooling with other guns in categories 1/2

The entire gun market is in a deep slump with high saturation and skinflint buyers. Lots of perfectly fine used guns are still in circulation and people are getting squeezed for things they need every day. It's hard to justify another fancy revolver when gas is $4-5+ per gallon.
Doesn't help that Beretta is still trying to force a hostile takeover just to burn Ruger to the ground and salt the earth.
    >>65576527
Heat management. Suppressors get hot as fuck, which is a big reason why a lot of them are made of titanium.

If it costs nothing to make and you live in a state where you are free to do so you might as well fuck around and print a few anyway just to see how long it would last. Just don't expect perfection and maybe print it around a metal thread protector so that it doesn't gum up the threading on the barrel if it does melt.

I have a 12-gauge shotgun I could sell for $80 to a local FFL. However, I'm moving to Hawaii. I'm not sure if I should just sell it for the cash and use the money to buy a new gun there, or would it end up being cheaper to just disassemble and ship my shotgun to myself there?

What I want to avoid is selling it for $80 and then being told that it's $330 or $400 to buy a shotgun in Hawaii. If I can ship it for <$100 then I'd do that instead. But then again, I know that getting a long gun in Hawaii isn't hard; it might just be better for the convenience.
    >>
    >>65586733
Why ship it separately instead of flying with it? Do you not have a lockable container? You just go to a different window at the airport to check luggage with firearms and another window at your destination to pick them up, I've done it several times.
    >>
    >>65586749
Nope, I don't have a hardshell container case, just a softshell. I can order a Harbor Freight case but that's still ~$150 or I could check online classifieds for a cheap case <$50. But there's still a $200 extra checked baggage fee if I can't put everything into one suitcase. If I can just wrap it in bubble wrap and foam and stick it in a 36" long box, I could ship via USPS.

Going through a box of random parts and accessories I found I possess a new in box Magpul PRS buttstock. It is a fixed tube type so I can’t just put it on my regular AR (like if I was shooting groups or testing ammo) without changing out the buffer tube. What rifle should I build to use this?
I have a bolt action 308 and 223 I use for shooting at steel or hunting, plus my 5.56 AR. Any suggestions on a semi-auto rifle build where a big heavy fixed buttstock would be appropriate? Not interested in shooting calibers much larger than 308, so I’m thinking closer to 6mm or something.

How much gear do I actually need for baby's first competition?
    >>
    >>65589554
Different competitions require different gear and levels of proficiency. At the very least you need a good pistol/rifle/shotgun that are reliable and that you can shoot well. You should be able to operate any of them without having to look at what you are doing, you should be able to unholster/shoot/move/reholster on command quickly and safely. Naturally a holster, sling, magazine pouches and a good belt are required. Hearing and eye protection as well.

The bigger barrier is being proficient. Can't buy skill off Amazon. A series of actual shooting classes, including more advanced courses that get into shooting while moving and around cover are usually recommended. You can and should practice by yourself too, but only once you know that what you are practicing is going to work. There is a real danger of leaning on bad habits and then having a hard time training to get away from them. Starting from 0 is better than thinking you have it right and getting proven wrong (usually via DQ in the first moments of a match).

Double check the laws. Hawaii is pain. Shipping guns to Hawaii is horrible pain. Flying in with a gun might not be permitted. They generally require you to have a gun license of some kind before you show up with a gun. As a broad policy Hawaii doesn't recognize the 2nd Amendment at all, and you need their permission to even think about having a gun. FFL transfers there are incredibly expensive as well.

I'm hoping that has changed recently but that was my previous experience working in the industry. Sending anything there even for free was ridiculously expensive and got tied up with red tape.

Can minishells (1 3/4in) damage the chamber or forcing cone on a shotgun? I understand that the unfired length isn't the true length of the shell, and that shotguns are somewhat tolerant of length variance, but if the fired length doesn't clear the chamber, couldn't there be damage to it or the forcing cone as the projectile travels down the barrel? Or is that something the wad and casing prevent?
I was theorycrafting some extra long rounds about the size of a marker or highlighter (5-6in), and assumed whatever elongated monstrosity would fire them would have issues firing normal 2 3/4 rounds, then wondered why minishells don't struggle with the same thing in standard shotguns (or no one talks about it if they do.)
    >>
    >>65598680
the damage is just more carbon buildup which doesnt matter unless we are talking you never clean your gun for a thousand rounds.
    >>
    >>65598680
If the projectile is hard enough to harm the chamber, it's also hard enough to harm the bore, and ought to be in a sabot or shotcup. In which case, that protects the chamber as well as the bore.

I plan on installing a new buffer tube and Magpul QD backplate on my AR. I see a lot of conflicting information regarding what (if anything) should be applied to the buffer tube threads prior to torquing the castle nut. Should I apply grease and decrease the torque on the wrench 40~ percent to account for wet torque, or assemble it dry?
    >>
    >>65601875
AFAIK nothing gets applied to the threads. Install buffer, plate, and nut. Ensure buffer is straight assuming collapsing stock install (easy to clock wrong). Torque castle nut and stake. Brownell's seems to recommend the same (as of 12+ years ago). I like using anti-sieze where I can but not knowing torque rating (or being unsure of material compatibility over time) sucks.

    >>65601912

Thanks for the response. Magpul says not to apply loctite to the buffer tube threads or stake the endplate since its steel is brittler than that of standard endplates, so I really want to get the torque right.

    From the manual:
    >6. Lubricate threads of lower receiver (8) and lower receiver extension (36) with molybdenum disulfide grease prior to reassembly
    and also
    >13. Using the spanner wrench and torque wrench, torque the locking nut (32) 38 to 42 lb-in.
    >>
    >>65602189

Thanks. Is this from TM 05538/10012-IN? I ask because in-lbs was corrected to ft-lbs after that version.

    >Is this from TM 05538/10012-IN?
It is. My bad for copy-pasting without reading closer, didn't even register that it said in*lb.

Point is, the correct spec, 40ish ft*lb, already allows for lubrication.
Assembling it dry would be a bad idea, but if you did, that would be the case where you'd need to change torque to compensate.

    Would a Kel-Tec PR57 be a good CC?
With 5.7FN becoming more common, low recoil, lower-than-average sound signature, and being mag-less so it it's nice and thin, I feel like it would be a really good CC weapon. If we're gonna follow the logic of 9mm where shot-placement is king and most people carrying hollowpoints where penetration isn't really a consideration anyways, I don't see how having 20+1 low-recoil rounds is a disadvantage.

    >Always heard that the reason box shotgun mags suck bigly is the plastic gets deformed if it's sitting loaded for a while
Is this true of tube mags too? If I have a shotgun for home defense loaded for too long might the shells fail to cycle well, or is it not so much an issue with cylindrical "stacking" pressure instead of "squeezing" pressure like a box mag does?
If it is an issue, would just doing a partial load take enough spring pressure off them to avoid it?
    >>
    >>65613390
Its true for tubemags but in the case of tubes its that the shell bulges out and it takes more than 6 months. If its a pump you can force it it harder and it will still work. Its roughly a year where it wont chamber at all.
Thats why they say shoot your shotgun twice a year.
With a box its weeks before the shell wont chamber.

Scientifically speaking, it would be iridescence or thin film interfere.
I've heard it called "French bluing", but it's not technically bluing and I don't think that it's the formal term.
It's a byproduct of the tempering process (sometimes done for aesthetics alone).
The exceptionally thin iron oxide layer on the surface reflects light differently than the underlying steel, a bit like how a prism works, hence diffraction grating we perceive as color, with the thickness of the oxide layer affecting the wavelength of reflected light.
    >>
    >>65613309
IIRC you can do that to titanium and some other metals by applying voltage in a water bath and tweaking the voltage as you pull it out of the water. You can do something similar to titanium with a flame. You can do the same with bare steel and a flame but it might affect the hardness (see: steel tempering color chart). You can also hot salt blue (see mark novak redoing a luger trigger + hot salt bluing color chart) and likely fake the effect in your pic with a steady hand and good temp control. I think that's all the ways I know of doing that.
    >>
    >>65613679
Normally called fire bluing or nitre bluing.
Usually done for none pressure bearing parts like pins and screws.
    >>
    >>65613686
    >IIRC you can do that to titanium and some other metals by applying voltage in a water bath and tweaking the voltage as you pull it out of the water.
    That's anodizing.
    >You can do something similar to titanium with a flame.
That's tempering, same effect as when heating steel.
A pot of molten lead at a fixed target temperature can be used to achieve this with a greater degree of control.
That's how the smaller parts of many older pistols were originally tempered, with the nice blue color being a side effect of the tempering process.

    >You can also hot salt blue (see mark novak redoing a luger trigger + hot salt bluing color chart)
That's "nitre bluing", and it shouldn't be used on a Luger trigger, since that's a heat treated part that was tempered in molten lead at the factory, same way the springs, extractors, and other trigger components on those guns were heat treated at the factory.

There are several similar processes that should not be confused.

First, "nitre bluing" as previously described. It's only suitable for smaller parts, and only for parts that don't require any sort of heat treatment since it usually anneals the parts to cheese-grade softness.

Then there are some salts that can be used to chemically change the structure of the steel, effectively carburizing it and making it harder.
The feed lips on early Colt 1911 magazine were treated like this by partially submerging the mags in molten potassium cyanide.
The colored surface layers on these are extremely thin and fragile, so they're almost always worn off.

Finally we have the processes commonly called "hot bluing" or "caustic bluing" which involves boiling the parts in a water-based solution of lye, and various nitrates.
If the process is applied to parts that have been properly polished beforehand, it can produce a nice shiny black finish that's almost as fancy as finely rust blued guns, but with far less skilled labor involved.
    >>
    >>65613740
    >nitre bluing.
    That's a completely different process.
    >>
    >>65613802
    Nope.
Nitre bluing is using the molten nitre salts to achieve the flame bluing with a consistent temperature. The chosen temperature is selected by varying the amounts of different salts. Can also use molten lead as stated above.
Hot salt bluing is nitre salts in water and is done at a lower temperature. This is the common one today.

minimal aftermarket unless you want to mount the light to the toprail and block your sights. the barrels not threaded.

The muzzle device thing isn't a real problem, it's like complaining that you have to remove the gas tube of an AR if you want to remove the barrel. The only time you'll slide the handguard off the barrel is after you've removed the barrel nut with a special tool so you can swap barrels (or cut/thread your old barrel); you would never remove the barrel for any normal maintenance or cleaning actions.
Unfortunately the CX4 has limited OEM and aftermarket support so getting a high power spring for suppressor use or whatever isn't happening.

Does the semi-auto just have some sort of "blocker" that interrupts the motion of the firing pin? I'm assuming that the gun itself has enough energy to refire itself after the first shot.

Its actually the other way around. Semi auto is more complicated than full auto. You have an additional part called a disconnector that stops the gun from continuing to fire when the triggers held down.
And no you cant just remove the disconnector to turn any semiautomatic into a fullauto. Cause now the timings wrong.
That said most select fire is simply moving the disconnector. So it wont engage.

Since Ruger has decided to an hero I can’t find the Redhawk 357 5.5” 8rnd revolver I’ve been saving up to buy. I planned to hand load some spicy cartridges and wanted the “safety factor” of the Ruger since they seem to be known for being able to take a high round count of magnum loads. That and the 8 round capacity set it apart.
Anybody got recommendations for an alternate?
