Hey guys I'm struggling with motivation regarding the Japanese language

    >I had a 1 month streak (keyword had)
    >I have 200+ known words
    >I know both hiragana and Katakana
    >I know a small handful of grammar rules

I can't just stop, but I feel like it gets harder to continue and force myself to watch hours of content in another language, one day I'm super Otaku abut it and the next I don't even care, it's like I'm lukewarm

any idea how to force myself to continue? I've made so much progress, I cannot stop now!

    >watch hours of content in another language
Then don't, and in my opinion at this point I really don't feel like it will bring you that much value anyway.
    Just doing cards is fine.
But in general don't force yourself, there have been days where I didn't interact at all with the language and I'm at N2, it still is much better than to end up making a lot of progress but hating the language.

Are you only learning through watching videos and trying to learn and guess the rules of grammar and words that way? I think you’d be better off taking a break from that learning method and going for something more traditional like a grammar book and vocabulary flash cards for less time every day. i think Watching shows and stuff works best if you already know like 95% of the language and are trying to learn the remaining 5% through context.

It's a mix of both of that

I had read about 15~ pages of Tae-Kim and did some of Genki, while doing all of that immersion stuff

But I haven't gonna super deep in the traditional way and all the people online just say "Immersion" but at my level where I can't super comprehend it (Unless they speak like I'm a baby) So maybe it's a good idea to learn more the traditional way while continuing my anki, and as long as I do my anki I won't continue getting 200 cards a day.

    >and all the people online just say "Immersion" but at my level where I can't super comprehend it
you will never comprehend it if you don't start immersion which you should have started doing on your first day of learning JP

Start immersing today, I have some tips.
You have watched anime before this, haven't you? You've already have finished anime shows, don't you?
    Just rewatch those.
And then, watch mahou shoujou, easy slice of life shows, kodomo anime.
Watch Japanese youtube, watch japanese let's players, they're fun!
    >>
    >>51337289
    >I had a 1 month streak (keyword had)
I learnt japanese a decade ago and my biggest streak was almost 600 days before i decided it was enough

You will never make it if 1 month is too much lol
    >>
    >>51337382
    rewatching shows isn't fun
shows made for 5yos aren't fun
    >>
    >>51339362
    ok here's another good tip
    don't be a bitch
    >>
    >>51339362
    >nuh uh I don't wanna
okay then have fun not knowing japanese
    >>
    >>51339362
To be fair watching shows (with the intention of learning) and trying to interact with the language at sub N4 is a waste of time.
    >>
    >>51339893
but everyone says you need to immerse ASAP
    >>
    >>51340106
Well, I think it's BS, at that point you don't have basically anything to build on.
At best you'll spend more time in a dictionary learning words/kanji mostly above your level, and you'll likely just end up getting more confused while learning less than you'd normally.

At least that was my experience.

In any case you should know that any advice you'll receive on this subject is highly subjective, it's what WE would have done and what has worked for us, it might not necessarily apply to you.
    >>
you just need more words 200 is almost nothing, like i assume you are understanding almost nothing while immersing which is kind of useless. it will feel so much better when you get to like 2k+ of the most common words
    >>
    >>51337289
I do not think 200 words is enough to start immersion. I mean, if you enjoy it then go for it, it won't hurt, but if it's a chore I do not see what's the point of spending hours doing it.
Just keep it simple. Just focus on learning 5-15 new words on anki a day. Along with reviews it should take you like 30-45min. Read next grammar lesson/chapter every few days. If Tae Kim doesn't work for you, maybe try cure dolly videos or transcripts. I personally prefer the latter.
Once you have that 1000 words and basic grammar you might start reading simple visual novels and mining. VNs are nice because you can hook into them and use yomitan to quickly add new words to anki. Check out https://jiten.moe/decks/media?mediaType=7&offset=0&sortBy=difficulty&sortOrder=0 to browse novels based on their difficulty.
Passively absorbing japanese shows or news or whatever certainly can help, but I hardly see a point of doing it if you know so little you basically do not understand anything and force yourself to do it.

    I fear no man.
    >>
    >>51353827
Do you even look at the cards or just mash the buttons randomly?
    >>
    >>51353850
NTA but it takes me like one or two seconds to get through most cards.
I only slow down if I'm unsure
    >>
    >>51353857
Sounds like it's time to clear out the stuff you know then
    >>
    >>51339893
    >trying to interact with the language at sub N4 is a waste of time.
    Retarded take.
    >>
    >>51353850
I mash only the cards that are too basic or obvious. (I'm too lazy to edit the package to delete the most basic ones.)

In my case, I tried watching Bocchi and Takagi-san at 120-200 total hours (20 hs immersion), both with JP subs. It was a pain in the ass. Bocchi was barely intelligible and I already knew the plot.
At 300 hs (80 hs immersion) I tried watching Atanshinchi. The speed was too much for me but with JP subs I could somehow pick up 60%.
I must have been very early into N4 grammar at that point.

I never paid much attention to listening, even though I knew that's my weak point.
At 2.2k hours (1.2k immersion) I decided to stop using the subs clutch for some more accesible shows. I managed to watch Bocchi and Takagi-san, occasionally consulting the subs maybe once every 3 or 4 minutes.
Now, at 3k hours (1.8k immersion), Atashinchi was laughably easy, but something easy like Utena was a pain in the ass with or without subs.

These numbers are not impressive at all. I'm a 40yo guy who works 50 hs a week. I'm pretty fucking dumb compared to the outliers but it's not impossible. It just takes time and actively putting your brain to work to fix your weak spots. Some will hunt you for a very long time (listening, lack of vocabulary, nuance, etc).

I think the better you start immersing, even if it's toddler level shit, the better.

    - Use FSRS and probably reduce your DR to 80-85%. Adjust per deck
    - Premade decks, except perhaps Kaiji 1.5k, are full of mistakes. There's nothing wrong with doing them, as long as you remove all the overlapping vocab
    - Learning a few basic kanji components helps
    - Pause leeches for a while. Brute forcing through them is a waste of time and a source of frustration. You'll need to come up with mnemonics and some tweaks for them to stick
    - Use FSRS and probably reduce your DR to 80-85%
    - Don't spend more than 30-45' on Anki unless you're prepping for an exam
    - Burn through some grammar guide ASAP, then circle back to study more carefully. Consult the DoJG whenever necessary or native grammar explanations on YouTube. You want to be aware of as many patterns as possible, and many N2-N1 patterns are not advanced or rare.
    - Mine and review the cards you mined on the same day if possible
    - Cure Dolly is a hack

I went to Japan earlier this year, and it was a huge letdown. Now I don't know why I would even want to learn this language.

    >>
    >>51367881
Then don't? Were you seriously learning a difficult foreign language just because you wanted to go to a tourist trip? Or is this just a thinly veined attempt at blogposting?
If you do not enjoy learning Japanese then do not learn Japanese.
