i don't know about korea/japan
but in chinese countries it's because of chinese/lunar new year
if someone in the family disgraces the family too much, they get excommunicated from new year celebrations, followed by disowning by parents (yes parents still disown their shameful children in chinese countries, my cousin got disowned for being a gambling addict o algo)

and the shame of that is too unbearable.

gambling by itself isnt wrong, it's losing all your money when gambling that is seen as wrong. and if you're so stubborn/stupid you borrow even more money and double down on your losses with even more gambling, only to lose some more, then that's (wrong)^2, which is what happened to my cousin.
