Akshually it comes from the yuro version of the kimono, the banyan, picrel is newton wearing one. Men used to wear it to protect their clothes when smoking in the evening (robe de chambre) which then gave the smoking vest. On suits it's really formal and I agree it looks kinda goofy nowadays
