Did you guys know it was Japan that created America's love of air conditioning, mass produced cheese, and high-fructose corn syrup?

Japan's pivotal contributions to air conditioning:

Ductless Mini-Splits (1959): Mitsubishi invented the ductless mini-split system, a highly popular cooling solution used for homes and additions without needing bulky ductwork.

The Split System (1961): Toshiba developed and released the world's first split-type air conditioner. This design separated the noisy compressor unit (kept outside) from the quiet indoor unit, which changed how residential spaces were cooled globally

Inverter Technology (1980/1981): Toshiba also introduced the world's first residential and commercial inverter-driven air conditioners. This breakthrough allowed the compressor to run at variable speeds rather than just switching on and off, greatly improving energy efficiency and room comfort

Japanese microbiologist Kei Arima and his team at the University of Tokyo discovered microbial rennet (also known as Mucor rennin), a milk-coagulating enzyme derived from fungi such as Mucor pusillus. Filed in the early 1960s (with Japanese priority in July 1961 and U.S. Patent No. 3,151,039 granted in September 1964), the invention provided a commercial-scale alternative to traditional calf-stomach chymosin used in cheesemaking.

In 1965, Dr. Yoshiyuki Takasaki and researchers at the Japanese Agency of Industrial Science and Technology discovered and refined the bacterial glucose/xylose isomerase enzyme, making the mass production of fructose from corn syrup economically and industrially viable by the late 1960s. Glucose isomerase converts ordinary glucose (derived from corn starch) into fructose, creating a much sweeter, cheaper, and more liquid-friendly sweetener. Takasaki patented the process in 1971. The technology was then licensed and commercialized in the United States in the early 1970s by companies like Clinton Corn Processing Company.

What about “NORIN TEN”?

Fascinating.
I'm more interested in the merits of what Japan has done for itself, same as any other country.

>split aircond
Fun fact. Japan was responsible for kickstarting Malaysia's economic miracle in the 80s-90s by investing in factories in Malaysia. One of the biggest sectors they funded was factories building air conditioners for local and export markets. To this day, Daikin is the major aircond brand here.
