From your perspective it might as well be super easy, Portuguese is a sister language of Spanish and they share innumerable similarities. But than ain't the case for "american", the fact Spanish is a gendered language already boils the minds of most mutts.
Keep in mind that mutts aren't at all motivated to learn any other language because they expect everyone to speak theirs and are too fat and dumb and stupid and unmotivated and lazy to do anything that doesn't come easily.

Anyway I think you're giving too much credit to the ability to speak a second language. Obviously, learning something as linguistically different as Japanese or Arabic is impressive, but learning another European language isn't quite the same, especially when it's something as accessible as Spanish. It's also one of the most widely spoken languages in the US, so it's hardly surprising that so many people speak it fluently as a second language

Do you ever learn languages to actually read something or just do it to patronize people? Because it never crossed my mind to appear cosmopolitan, the US is still pretty insular and doesn't really think about the rest of the world, most people haven't even been out of the country. Like if I learned Spanish what use will I get out of it? Being a novelty gringo who is fluent and has no skills or any knowledge of interest? Honestly seems pointless.
