>>225874919it really doesn't matter and most americans don't know that nor care. while europeans see latin american as a place of spanish character because they know spain, americans don't know spain and so everything of hispanic character is seen as mexican because these are the people they know. spanish then becomes a nonwhite language, catholicism a nonwhite religion, etc. americans historically are very culturally isolated and anglocentric and everything different is unknown to them so they also always had an aversion for everything latin. italians weren't considered white for this reason until maybe the 90s or 2000s.americans cannot and will never see the evident european characteristics in latin america and suggesting latam is western is hilarious to them or even insulting because western=anglo. this is why hispanics cannot be considered white and never will, whiteness will not change and adapt in the usa and there is reason to believe it will. everything instead point to a increasing categorization of people.

>>225874745Something to note that I've never seen anyone explain. The US was roughly 80% white in the 90s, by 2000 they changed the census to allow people to mark multiple races. There is no consistent trend between 80 and 60% white. 0. It happened almost instantly during the 2000s and 2010s a full 20% drop because the census allows people to mark multiple races. And if you don't believe me, whites and blacks had about the same birthrate all the way through the 80s and 90s. For some reason the way race is set up in the US whites can only be subtracted from while every other race gets added, so if someone puts white-hispanic or white-african the hispanic and black pop increases while white decreases.

It's not a question of racemixing because that was extremely taboo up until the last 20 years, they were afraid to show it on TV. The reason they made the change to begin with is because the US had no idea how to count mixed race couples, so they just made it so you can mark multiple. They still don't know how to do it. Like in the 1950s they did it visually, like if they thought you looked black at all you got marked as a full blooded negro.
