In all Indo-European languages *per- (ger. far/ver, slav. pre- , lat. per-, indo-iranian- far/paar) means intensifying action but not finishing it, finishing action, doing action in another place, overdoing the action, doing something completely opposite of original action and doing original verb's action wrong way on oneself. And after over 5000 years it's still remained such a multi practical prefix in all branches which I find interesting.
