Do you believe in generative syntax and minimalism, government and binding, distributed morphology type theories? A lot of people hate on it just for the sake of hating on it. Especially redditors.

>>225851797What like, you talk pirahã? Kwk
>>225851883The Pirahã guy (Everett) is a well known charlatan who did very sloppy field work on the language and has been selling a story for years. The Pirahã story is very popular among non-academics and redditors for whatever reason.

>>225851797It's a bad idea to generalise language-dependent grammar traditions to something more fundamental. It doesn't hold up. It's also a bad idea to mix up cognition and language.
>>225852613Frameworks derived from generative syntax provide reasonable tools to describe a wide variety of syntactic phenomena. DM, LFG, nanosyntax are the status quo in most linguistics departments at least in the US. They are not an outdated historical sidenote like many redditors like to claim. It doesn't have to be "correct". These are just tools used to generalize patterns that occur cross-linguistically. I swear these redditors just wanna jump on the next bandwagon that makes them look cool.
