Can character designs end up too cartoonish to the point that they unintentionally clash with the tone of the story if the latter takes itself seriously enough?
no, that would be the director's fault
Sometimes it works.
>>8071498I’m not white, so I don’t see the appeal of stuff like Cerebus or Bone. I even finished Bone. And it just random stuff kept happening, and then it ended. What a waste of time.
>>8071496See Japanese cares if characters are hot enough... what westerners care about is genders, pronounces and other shit and that's why most western artist are considered as faggots who will never make it.
>>8071496This may be a gay ass opinion but no? Western Cartoons get shit on because of their bean mouth, gender values and gay inclusivity, but they still pull pf some good story / dark tones for their audience. Yeah its no full metal alchemist oni-chan dog morphing but, consider Steven Universe, gravity falls, amphibia, the owl house or over the garden wallAll straight up little kid cartoons but are able to pull in some existential dread or serious story plot points. That one episode of Steven universe where he ages or turns into a cat ball both cartoony and somewhat unnerving Over the garden wall has a silly lol random character and the granny whispers episode is creepy and tonally perfect
>>8071510>just random stuff kept happening, and then it ended.I know right? I use this criticism for every piece I media I don't like, but don't have a good reason for disliking.
>>8071496>they unintentionally clash with the tone of the story if the latter takes itself seriously enough?Well, it can, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. Plenty of stuff has been made within the horror genre, but has a cutesy art style (at least initially). The contrast can even make the horror feel more unnerving. But I think there's something to be said about having the appropriate art style for the job, that helps emphasise the mood and genre you're going for.Like if you were making an animation about a jazz band, you could animate them more realistically, or perhaps in an anime style, and both could work, but basing the style on the modernist Jazz album covers from the peak of jazz's popularity would probably create the most harmonious interaction between the visuals, plot, and audio. So it's something to give some thought to, but not something to stress out too much about. If it works well, it elevates the work, but if it doesn't 'work well', then it won't really drag the project down.
>>8071496Imagine if Kagurabachi or Jujutsu Kaisen had Slayers level of fashion or exaggerated faces. They just wouldn't work out well at all
