Every tutorial i've watched on character drawing so far, every artist basically goes "let's draw this character being happy" *draws happy pose*, "now what if we make him sad" *draws sad pose* and i'm like "...HOW??" He just draws it without explaining why the pose works, why this makes the character look sad or happy. Of course you can give the character a sad expression or a happy one, but there is more to it right? When i draw i often just don't know how i could even make the pose and expression really FEEL how i want to. My mind is blank and i scribble endlessly and just end up frustrated because i can't make it look right. Are there any guides or tutorials or even just keywords i can look up that can help me guide into the right path? I feel like almost every artist seems to know this fundamental *thing* but i don't.. Do you just gather a shit ton of references and try to copy and internalize them? And eventually you can just draw all of those poses and mix and match elements of them on a whim?
Howie's a Schrader fan?I dunno man. You've seen cartoons right? You've got to be able to think of a happy or sad pose characters have done. If not just put on a Looney Tunes playlist and study those.
In any case a happy posture is more upright and expresses confidence by exposing more of their midsection. Sad postures are more slouched and tend to project vulnerability by covering up more of their midsection.
>>8069637Your issue is you do not observe. Watch people when they are sad, happy, etc. Take notes on how they pose, what they do, how they walk, how they talk, in different emotional states. >And eventually you can just draw all of those poses and mix and match elements of them on a whim?Yes. You need to start observing and studying though. Start asap. Just go outside and watch how people act, and draw lots of different poses.
>>8069694That makes a lot of sense, thank you!>>8069682>You've seen cartoons right? You've got to be able to think of a happy or sad pose characters have done.Yes i watched cartoons but then when i actually draw i still have trouble recalling on how the emotion or posture looks. I realize now that when you and also >>8069972 mentioned to study, that i never actually studied or truly observed them in the first place. So i guess the best time to start with that is now. Thanks Anons!
