    >you need to learn how to draw boxes and 3 dimensional shapes
    Ok I'll do drawab-
    >NO under NO CIRCUMSTANCES do you EVER follow drawabox it will make you HATE drawing and teach you NOTHING
Ok so what's the next best thing?

Just understand the horizon line, and 1-2-and 3-point perspective. You can use How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, Perspective Made Easy, or Framed Perspective, or whatever you like. Just don't spend too much time on it.

    >>8069550
Boxes are a literal, unironic psyop to mind rape midwits into giving up before they even begin
    >>
    >>8069555
based, the gesture and silhouette psyops weren't cutting it
    >>
    >>8069550
non perspective drawn boxes, ie, just drawing a box without a horizon line or vanishing point(s) is actually somewhat difficult to get even close to "correct," if you look at most pros drawing boxes without correcting errors you will see they are a lil wonky
    >>
If you're good at self-directing your education DaB is fine. If you suspect you might be a brainlet find an in-person course. Most people are not capable of dragging themselves out of being pre-beg
    >>
    >>8069553
Horizon lines and shit were the easy part but figuring out how to properly draw them at the correct angle and volume is really difficult.
I've practiced with figure construction using references but with the pelvis for example, it takes like a dozen attempts and drawing directly over the pelvis until I get something that looks passable.
    >>8069555
    >>8069568
Are they not important for construction? That's the context I always see them in.

gonna be honest with you dude, if you're not just going for stylized illustrations and you want a cleaner more accurate approach, just photo bash or trace photos you take. as much as i despise his art just do what the punpun guy does

Do drawabox. Do every exercise just one time. When you get to the box drawing part. Draw one box.
It's that simple. Yes, you won't have drawn a perfect box, you don't need to.
If you want perfect perspective, do 3d. 2d doesn't need perfect perspective, just good enough perspective. If the perspective is slightly off, the brain will hallucinate the lens distortion required for the perspective to still make sense, it's just part of innate pattern recognition.
If I remember correctly drawabox took like barely an afternoon, don't spend more than a day on it. Then you can also do the next best thing, it's not one or the other. Do both.
Just don't get stuck on 'do x a billion times to get better' steps. Think for yourself, if you feel like 'this is kinda a stupid, I got the gist of it already, why do I need to do this 1000 times?' Then you're good to move on. You don't need to act like an apprentice sushi chef that only washes rice for the first 10 years, that's just brainless bitch work.

You MUST post your work if youre gonna write some giant bullshit paragraph aboht draw a box. Prove it bro. Let's see the results.
    >>
    >>8070377
First of all, what part do you disagree with? If you're going to call my paragraph bullshit at least post an opinion, I can't even tell if you like or hate drawabox.
    >>
    >>8070257
"Do drawabox" and everything you said afterward is just nonsense. I can tell youre making shit up and do not have the work to back up a single thing you've said. Everyone that recommends draw a box is the same as you. Ive literally never seen a professional artist mention it or recommend it. Ever.
    >>
    >>8071096
    >and everything you said afterward is just nonsense
It wasn't nonsense. Everything I said afterwards was the remove the main drawbacks of drawabox that people critique it for. Like doing the menial drills and drawing 1000 boxes, which is retarded and also the reason why you won't see professional artists recommend it.
I said just do all the exercises once, when you get to the box part, draw a single box.
Even if drawabox is dogshit, if you just speed through it you'd waste at most a single afternoon, which is better than doing nothing/procrastinating looking for the perfect course.
It's the safest most non controversial advice ever, and you're braindead for having a problem with it.
    >>
    >>8069550
Draw boxes properly in perspective if you must. DO NOT EVER EVER USE Jeet-in-a-box you WILL hate art. Just like Loomis said Norling is all an artist needs for perspective then move onto drawing appealing things that interest you.
    >>
    >>8069553
I still don't know how to draw a figure
    >>
    >>8069625
ehh I kinda agree but I thought I was this person until pretty recently. Feel like people undersell themselves, I mean I did, and I've seen many people done it. So in-person is ideal if you have the money, most people can get away with learning from pirated stuff
    >>
Drawabox works if you pace yourself. It burns people the fuck out because they think its possible to speedrun it and its the other way around. You should work through drawabox in such a way that you spend 20-30 minutes on it daily at the absolute maximum else it'll make you hate drawing.
    >but at that pace it may take years
Yes. But if you try to speedrun it you'll quit art. The grind is too intense and frankly shitty.

It's also better if you already have a grasp on anatomy and have a certain level of proficiency doing whatever it is that you really like doing (most often anime girls). If you do 20 mins drawabox and spend the rest of the day drawing what you like and studying other stuff then it'll be useful so long as you stay consistent over a long period of time.

Possibly the single worst resource for total beginners but you shouldn't dismiss it.

The point isn't to blindly draw a box.
All of these methods and tips and tricks and loomis and vilppu.. they all follow the same core principle: break down the forms of a subject in to their simplest three-dimensional constructs.

    - I know how to draw a basketball because I know how to draw a sphere.
    - I know how to draw a crate because I know how to draw a cube.
    - I know how to draw a snake because I know how to draw a long winding cylinder.
    - I know how to draw a book because I know how to draw a rectangular prism.
    - I know how to draw a pleated skirt because I know how to draw rectangular planes overlapping each other and wrapping around a cone.
    - etc..

The point is to train your eye and your mind to envision the underlying three-dimensional forms of any and everything you could ever want to draw, whether it be a reference or from imagination.

    - If you can draw a rectangular prism from any angle, you can draw a book from any angle.
    - If you can draw a cylinder from any angle, you can draw a water bottle from any angle.
    - If you can draw a bending rectangular plane from any angle, you can draw a bending leaf from any angle.
    - etc...

    Focus on this.

    confirmation bias is meaningless
some people use boxes, some use circles, some use both
you don't care about drawing, you're just a sperg that wants to win online debates, subhumanoid behavior

    >they all follow the same core principle: break down the forms of a subject in to their simplest three-dimensional constructs.
It's not the core principle of Loomis and Vilppu at all. If anything, they present such techniques as an intermediary step.

    >- I know how to draw a basketball because I know how to draw a sphere.
    Ok sure.

    - I know how to draw a crate because I know how to draw a cube.
Too bad you learned from drawabox, so you lay down your perspective grid and do your textured box and it's going to look artificial s fuck. Congratulations, you learned jeet level composition.

    >- I know how to draw a snake because I know how to draw a long winding cylinder.
No you don't. Cylinders are not appropriate for modelling snakes and their squashy fat bodies. You know they are not circular in their cross sections and there's actual anatomy to them? Your gesture will suck and your finished snake will suck. - Wait i forgot, you learned from DaB so you don't know what a gesture is.

    - I know how to draw a book because I know how to draw a rectangular prism.
Well, surely you can also draw opened books? Or do need to consult Scott Robertson first, so you can properly project your curved surfaces in perspective?

    >- I know how to draw a pleated skirt because I know how to draw rectangular planes overlapping each other and wrapping around a cone.
No you don't you absolute mong, you delusinal begtard turd. You need to know about shapes and folds and their points of origin, about pulling, stretching, dropping of cloth, and you ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS need to know & show the underlying forms of the body.

Why don't you go back to /r/artfundamentals with your permabeg advise. You are not allowed to leave until you finish the 25 perfect accurate chests constructed in perspective.

Or how about you show us how to draw the absolute soulful picrel with your rectangular planes and cones and cubes and winding cylinders. If you can do that, you may stay.

You spent time writing all that just to miss the point and nitpick an obvious simplification?
You must be miserable. Get some help.
    >>
    >>8071836
The claim was that breaking everything into basic 3d geometric shapes is all that's needed to draw everything. That is wrong for living for living creatures beyond a beg level (if you already know _the anatomy_, you can use the simplifications, just knowing the simplifications is not enough) and are _entirely_ unsuitable for drapery. What is there to be misunderstood? This thinking is exactly the garbage that DaB & co are peddling.
    >>
    >>8071848
    >Breaking everything into basic 3d geometric shapes is all that's needed to draw everything.

Yes, because that's exactly what everything is.
Honing the ability to visualize things in 3 dimensions and then draw those geometric forms from the most basic to the more complex is critical.
It even helps with other seemingly unrelated things, like lighting/shadows.

Also, drapery is just a plane with a series of folds twists and bends on itself.
That doesn't mean painstakingly etch every peak, trough, and crevice, but it can aid in visualizing how it should lay, where certain lines should go to signify a twist or an overlap, etc..
But it goes even further than just the objects themselves. You can use this skill to outline an orientation within a 3D space, or a particular path you want something to take, or the size and shape of a space that the subject is in.

I'm not saying to draw ten trillion boxes like DaB says, I'm saying focus on SEEING the three-dimensional forms of everything. The moment you put pencil to paper, imagine how the subject curves in 3D space and possibly what shape you could simplify it down to, and then fill in the details based on that.
If you WANT to draw a billion 3D shapes to help hone your visualization then go ahead, but I'm not advocating that it's the best way, it's just A way.
I had a terrible time drawing noses until I realized that noses are roughly just tetrahedrons with 2 holes on the bottom.
Obviously it's not a literal by-the-book tetrahedron, but it helps with REASONING about the form of the object so it can be more accurately represented on the page.

Also, this has nothing to do with whether you're a beginner or a professional. Even Kim Jung Gi sometimes drew basic 3D shapes for forms or a 3D cube representing some localized space to aid with orientation of the subject.
This is something you take with you and hone at any skill level.

Let's not further complicate something that's already complicated.
