Honest to god I thought you guys were memeing when you talked about your gazillion boxes and circles, are you really doing that? You do know everyone uses digital/ liquify tool or you could just erase right? What an absolute waste of time. Now practicing your shading movement or line stroke continuation makes more sense.

Y'all are being mislead.Don't you recognize that KJG was one of the most influential and important artists of our time? He drew WITHOUT A REFERENCE, he IMAGINED THE UNIMAGINABLE(proceed with half an hour of glazing)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfa7vfYc5ckThat aside, in the course busters telegram there's actually a 300 hour lecture series by KJG. >>8069675You can learn how to draw boxes really well from all that box shit I guess it can also help with buildings and boxy cars
>>8069684i regressed i believe wanted to know where i am today and this is the stage i am in. done under an hour any hope? or should i just go for boxes
>>8069675if you want to draw something in perspective or environment yeah you need the dreaded box
>>8069675>>8069703honestly anon, these are a great start. there's little adjustments i think you could make, like in the first one the back of her head is a bit large, but overall your lines are good and the characters are cute. 10000% better than anything a no-draw crab can do.it really depends on what YOU want to do. do you want to add color to these? go watch some tutorials about painting. learning box shit might help you to mentally visualize which sides of an object have more shadow, but thats about it. and that wouldnt even involve drawing 100's of them, just focusing on a few light source studies. if you want to place characters into intricate scenes with various objects, then i would say you could spend some time with very intentional perspective studies. but again, if that's what YOU want to do with your art.one thing from draw-a-box that i think both supporters and haters dont focus enough on is that he stresses to spend AT LEAST as much time actually drawing what you want to draw as you spend studying or learning. producing hundreds of pages of boxes and shapes but not drawing for your own love is just mental illness, as the boomer in OP rightly points out.
Fucking based beyond all belief. The box-drawing meme completely falls apart when you look at how animators/mangaka actually draw.
For the life of me, I cannot comprehend what making boxes does for anyone.I tried the Drawabox challenge and I did 100 boxes. I understand vanishing points, I even understand the Y in a box.But I am not comprehending what this ultimately helps with. The only useful thing out of Drawabox was the different perspective boxes that was presented from 1-5point. Anything else seems entirely pointless and useless. I'm not creating people out of boxes. I can utilize weird shapes and create objects and the like. Can someone prove me wrong? What is the difference between learning fucking cubes and learning actual perspective? Don't say anything about spatial awareness either.
>>8069430Drawing was 3D software before computers. I watched some 20 minutes of this old guys video and he makes sense since brokendraw is such a retard but he also goes to state how nobody in formal teaching gets taught construction and how it's just for autistic architecture. Only thing is that any industrial designer, concept artist or anyone serious has been taught construction. He probably apprenticed under some animator in his time and never even ventured outside his gestural disney animations since.
>>8069780filteredThe box is a vehicle for understanding concepts such as symmetry, centerline, orientation and position in space(spatial awareness), corner, planes and their relation to edges(light logic), and of course basic perspective. If you draw a 100, 500 boxes without trying to understand what is actually happening, yeah it's a waste. If you simply copy boxes visually, reproducing the angles, monkey see, monkey do, again, it's a waste.Slowly turning, tipping, shifting it up, down, left and right with your hand or a 3d model allows you to see what is happening to the planes. If you can understand this with the most basic representation(box) of the 3 axis, height, width and depth, then you can apply this knowledge to more complex forms.Construction is about analyzing and translating what you see, not copying. "why go through all this effort, when you can just use references for everything" Why? Because it gives freedom, you're not a slave to a photo. This way you actually refer to a photo and use it as a reference, instead of copying. Are boxes the only way to achieve the coveted enlightened state of "feeling the form", no. It's just the most basic bitch made form there is, same goes for the cylinder. You just need to actively think about the whole thing, including and especially the areas you cannot see.In the end it's a tool, how and if you use it is up to you. Eliza Ivanova thinks in sillhouette, she doesn't jive with construction(but she can), yet she has no problem depicting the 3d nature of things, her more known graphite drawings, as well as her heavily stylized animation work shows she fully understands what she's drawing.
>>8069284construction is not real. Good artists are not imagining boxes when they draw. They just imagine the form and draw that. Boxes are just a way to teach someone from 0 how to start seeing forms. And claerly its not working since there isn't a single good artist that honestly learned from boxes at the beginning.

>>8069293he also taught boxes and I also started drawing the torso and the head as a box.You stop doing it as you get better.
Animation boomer made me want to try drawing in the disney style (or at least understanding it). Currently looking into interesting instructors I found, maybe someone got more? - Dermot's courses seem like a fun intro to animation, something you would pick up after Preston Blairs book. But his style is rather for children, not my thing. Also Linkedin is the fucking devil, do not sign up to it, pirate it from rutracker instead.- John Pomeroy (got shouted out by Dermot) has some good tutorials on his youtube. His courses are rather expensive and not on coursebusters https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CZnX-oEbV8- Todd Bright runs a weekly online workshop where he has live models dress up (pic rel). Afterwards you can send in your gestures and he'll redline it. Quite affordable at $25 a month. Also got a few tutorials buried in his youtubs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJWQWLDHoM8 - Aaron Blaise doesn't really do it for me, i did his gesture course and while i had fun i felt like i learned nothing.- AMB is an acquired taste (boasty and he advertises his very expensive courses a lot), but on his livestreams he takes suggestions for characters and draws turnarounds or animates them to a professional level. Sometimes even anime https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaFE72KlAeg&t=11560s- Ron Husband composes everything of 2d primitives, a bit like the Peter Han guy compose everything of 3d primitives. Dynamic sketching for retards? Seems solid but he makes me sleepy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFQdfvHHNko>>8069845You can do it anon, just don't get discouraged. If you haven't seen it yet, look at the Umineko original art - judging from your drawings you're already there yet, if not surpassed it. Appeal always trumps technical skill.
>>8069913I don't know anything about his courses but Michael Mattesi's Force stuff helped a lot with my figures

>>8069993>ExplainI'm not that dude but i can kinda explain. He clutched into "draw cubes" adivice while such advice was never actually given anywhere but /ic. None of youtube artists or any other artists ever said you should draw people with boxes. All of them say you should grind gestures and sketches. So basically he has invented a nonexisting problem and now predents he's solving it.If he really wanted to help he would adress the question that actually bugs every beg in existance - how the hell are pros able to draw with no construction of any kind at all and what quanty of cocaine should be consumed to be able to eyeball like that.
>>8070148you can LITERALLY see box crap in every learning subreddit and any random videos, he LITERALLY shows it>how the hell are pros able to draw with no constructionhe LITERALLY uses and demonstrates construction
>>8069289Kim Jung Gi said (I hope I'm not misremembering) that the box was rather fundamental, and when drawing from imagination he envisioned the figure as inside a box.
>>8070154so then why are there perspective errors within his art? sure he does it in his head but its never even close to perfect, hes just guessing
>>8070158No human is a machine, anything free-handed will be have errors>its never even close to perfect, hes just guessingGood art is appealing, not accurate. If it's convincing enough at first or second glance then that's fineYou'll find "perspective errors" even in layouts drawn by professional Ghibli animators, only they're not perspective errors but deliberate (i.e you'll find multiple horizon lines and a cluster of vanishing points in what is supposed to be a 1-point perspective pic with only one vanishing point). If you're slavishly drawing lines toward the vanishing point without thinking about the end result then you might not end up with the most natural looking perspective drawing. There are Roman frescoes painted before the invention of formal perspective in which the same thing occurs. I guess it's closer to how our eyes perceive reality https://foundinantiquity.com/2013/08/09/pompeiian-fresco-painters-used-perspective-better-than-renaissance-artists/
>>8070151Please elaborate. I really wanna see a tutorial or something where an actual artist tells you to draw a human figure from boxes.>he LITERALLY usesYeah, and the question was how to LITERALLY draw without it.

>>8069719You just need simple perspective found in Norling (horizon line and vanishing points) to draw things in perspective. Boxes are a manmade invention discovered through mathematical observations they don't represent forms. Boxes don't occur in nature. Go outside you'll see complex forms with convex and concave shapes.

>>8069780I am a constructionist. But I do not recommend drawabox, and I hope you do not judge construction as a whole based on your experience with that site, just as one should not judge gesture based on their experience with Proko. If I had to describe DAB's problem in one sentence, it's that it teaches what the tool is, rather than how to use the tool. Your frustration with trying to see how the box is useful is exactly the end result of that mindset.>I'm not creating people out of boxes. I can utilize weird shapes and create objects and the like. The box is not the figure. What the box does is define the space in which that figure, or body part, can exist in. It gives orientation of the subject, and keeps it consistent in relation to other objects or parts.>What is the difference between learning fucking cubes and learning actual perspective?Nothing, because the box itself is dependent on perspective. This is more about practical application. Let's say for example you were tasked with drawing a boxy cardboard robot making a dynamic pose. Is it practical to use exacting perspective lines to draw every part? Or, is it enough to define the space it occupies within the drawing, and focus on showing the relationship between its different parts rather than the entire scene? Taking it further, suppose you are an animator. Animation is full of deformation, smears, exaggerated perspective, and so on, and you have to draw 8 to 24 drawings for each second of animation. Do you measure out everything with perspective lines, or do you use boxes? Now imagine there is a human inside the robot suit, and the suit is translucent. It is easier to draw the robot first, or the human?
>>8070270Simon?
>>8070244I guess i've missed something and 4chink is now a nursery for redditors so we all should care about their wellbeing. But anyway i still don't see how drawing nothing but lines and building human figures from boxes corelate.Btw nothing's actually bad about grinding lines and shapes. If you're into drawing something like anime/manga you will need a very decent line anyway.

>>8070165using animation stills as a frame of reference for illustration is just missing the point. yes people bend and break the rules in illustration and animation but they do so for different reasons. this example you provided (which is a little confusing and very autistic) probably came about from them extending the background to fit the characters which were drawn on another slide or something, who knows, regardless, someone like kim jong un could spend all day getting it perfect, but he chooses not to because its a waste of time, and doing box mannequins is a waste of time, even kim il sung would draw the forms within boxes to illustrate a point, but never the box mannequin crap or just boxes in a void over and over for no reason. he wanted to make a point and explain why things work the way they dohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5QIiubr10g

>>8070681Post at least a half-decent box first, you bootlicking cunt.
>>8070817nta but you do realize that the top of that head is squished because he ran out of room on the page, right retard?
Fuck, man, I agree with basically everything he's saying in this video but this dude can not draw for shit. Negative appeal. For someone who's been drawing his whole life and has worked directly under Don Bluth his stuff is straight ass. Genuinely wouldn't listen to either of them and would just hunt for translated japanese/chinese art videos.
>>8070825Please enlighten me, how can an artist of such caliber run out of room if the placement of shapes on a sheet is one of the first things even fucking kids at art schools are taught to do properly.
>>8070831I'm with the other anon post your fucking work you absolute shitter
>>8070832Ok, I accept your answer as "i surrender".
>>8070827Thinking about this, we need to institute a new test for any self-styled online art guru:draw an anime girlThat's it. Should be easy, right? If the "fundamentals" really do help you draw anything, it should be no sweat to just draw an appealing, simple anime girl. Anime/manga has been dominating the Western animation/comic scene for over a decade now so there's no excuse not to be at least somewhat familiar with the style.Proko, brokendraw, dermott, none of these hacks could draw something 1/10th as good as a decent jappa high schooler would doodle in his notebook. Shouldn't that give you SOME pause, especially if you're looking to learn anime style specifically? You tell any anime artist or mangaka to draw something imitating one of the Western greats and they'll be able to do a better job than vice versa.Mark my words. Force these grifters to draw a simple anime girl and you'll see how the emperors have no clothes.>>8070834genuinely, and I mean this 100% sincerely and am not joking, hang yourself at the first opportunity
>>8070827Show this to a western normie and they will say it's a good fun drawing. Go back 30 or 40 years and you would marvel at it like you marvel at your underage anime girls nowadays.Y'all niggers have been mindbroken by consuming japanese cartoons all day every day and have lost your taste in art. You just cannot appreciate western animation anymore and you are the reason it is dead.New artists nowadays don't even know how to draw characters like that anymore, they only now deformed stylized baby heads because that's all they are getting. The internet has given western animation the final death blow.
I have never seen more japanese worship in my life. I mean I get it, they do some cool shit...But iirc the great masters in history were uh...Oh jee...Someone remind me which parts of the world they were from?
>>8070839Western animation is technically less developed as a system of drawing and there is nothing you can do to cope about that. You're simply attached to nostalgia and blind to objective reality (or just have low cognitive resolution) if you can't see how the best of anime is more sophisticated technically than >>8070827. The west is perpetually obsessed with le "golden age" and they can't even see the developments happening right now.>>8070835I've noticed they will rarely take you up on the offer, but the result is usually hilarious either way. Makes me respect the ones who don't pretend """fundamentals""" will make you draw anime and openly admit they cannot do it all the more.>>8070842It's just that people are realizing the emperor has no clothes. It was fashionable to be ironically into anime and dismissive of Japan in your generation but that isn't going to last much long since people from the west are discovering how to do actual anime properly. Also Japan has the highest number per capita of great masters living and creating right now. Looks like you're WE WUZZ'ing out over someone else's achievements with these appeals to the past.
>>8070839Nothing wrong with underage anime girls. Women are just jews with tits. Better to draw little girls.
>>8070839>>8070842>You just cannot appreciate western animation anymore and you are the reason it is dead.I have basically every Ralph Bakshi movie memorized, you don't know who you're talking to. I'm a huge fan of Western artists and cartoonists especially. From the 90s indie comix darlings like Daniel Clowes, Adrian Tomine, Charles Burns, Peter Bagge, Chris Ware et al to the true weirdos like Dave Cooper, Bill Wray, Joshua Hall Simmons, Johnny Ryan. I wore out my dad's VHS of The Maxx when I was way too young to be watching it. I would print out Johnny the Homicidal Maniac pages in middle school and stuff them under my mattress like porn. The Amazing Screw-On Head changed my 12-year-old self's perception of what art was even allowed to look like. I love Western animation and cartooning and it's sad to see it fall so far. I don't know what the solution is, but I know appeal when I see it.
Ugh, what is that, a character who has an actual nose, like an actual person?? Luscious lips and visible teeth?? The eyelashes and eyelids are NOT merging into one standardized shape and instead give the character unique characteristics?Get that boomer crap out of my sight! Give me back my K-On!>>8070379We need all the still-living disney boomers reviewing box exercises and modern anime stylization
>>8070843You realize that historically, and even modern society that europe has produced masters of art? That even today per capita they're producing greater artists? You're only thinking japanese artists are great because you live in a tiny bubble and that's all you see. You never heard about amazing Japanese sculptors, painters, artists historically because they were all coming from the west. I mean even if we take a look at Japanese art history you're wrong there as well because Osamu Tezuka genuinely ADMITTED that his greatest inspiration was walt disney and western animation. You're historically wrong, you're wrong on a modern per capital level, you're wrong on education level because even people like Katsushika Hokusai admitted that the perspective style of Japanese art at the time was weak and learned a lot from the west. This idea that Japan is the forefront of anything is blatantly wrong.

>>8070847The past doesn't matter for discussing the forefront of technical achievements in the present. If you can't understand what they have done on a purely objective level, then you are doomed to not only not reach the equivalent of current expected pro standards in Japan, but you're doomed to not even achieve the things people you're WE WUZZING about could do. The western greats could learn anime btw and could see how it's technically more sophisticated compared to tooning, they would not be making millennial irony cringe posts about anime.>TezukaJust a tip for the future, namedropping him or Miyazaki or the two other animators/directors the west has heard about the first change you get makes you look incredibly low educated in 2026.

>>8070843pyw
>>8070852How do you learn to draw appealing things if you don't learn to draw in the first place? How the japanese do it? What is the secret sauce?
>>8070866Weebs are exactly the thing I am dabbing on, we're a different species altogether in that we are fully unapologetic about Japanese artistic superiority. The weeb is the low cognitive resolution millennial who says "they can make some cool stuff but come on....". Everyone in the west who watches anime even casually is already a closet ironic weeb, From this group a small portion of people will become artists and will learn to be more high power, more sigma minded and learn to actually draw legitimate anime. Those are the people who actually matter artistically in the west as it stands today. You can have your WE WUZZ past glory.

>>8070827It's the same mistake in all of his drawings. See how the arms are almost mirrored? It seems he unconsciously constructs his figures with a "bilateral" bias, causing them to appear stiff and mannequin-likeHe's still right about boxes sucking ass though

>>8070417HAHAHAHA NO WAYDude I did kinda think "yo dermot is like the NJF of art right now" crazy how I see a picture of him in this thread. Deep cut
>>8070417>>8070961Am I the only one who thinks we're witnessing something historical in art learning circles play out in real time? No way the world is the same before and after these videos.
>>8070963I don't think that's a bad thing to think, but it's a bit too early to tell, I see where you're coming from but we have to wait. The reason I akinned Dermot to Fuentes is well both oppose the consensus of the fields their in, Art and Right wing politics. Fuentes wants the GOP to be thoroughly destroyed because the DNC is about to sweep them in the midterms, and if the GOP is going to have any chance, Vance CANNOT run in 28. He is incompetent, the administration he's apart of is thoroughly corrupt beyond belief, and the DNC is going to exposed the shit out of this for their own personal gain, so he'd rather hurt them now by voting democrat then let this play out for too long. Dermot is similar in the sense that he really tries his hardest to push his viewers away from boxes - almost to a point where I personally disagree with, the same one could disagree with voting for the democrats, but I understand who these videos are for, and I also simultaneously believe that these videos are a net positive, and all artists, period, will have a better chance with him than Drawabox or any box pathology. I hold this to be true while simultaneously not rejecting boxes as much as Dermot does. Tl;DR Nick and Dermot have similar intentions in their own fields, and that trumps anything one might disagree with, if you are not of these redditors trapped in the lesson 1&2 hell of Drawabox, actually make artwork, you are free to negotiate with yourself and decide which of Dermot's advice you want to take and leave. That's my approach.
>>8070967of the fields they're* in. Fuck. this fuckass chud board is going to think I'm ESL... it's over.
>>8070048only way we would see his feet straight on like that is if we were on the ground looking at them
>>8070827He's an animator. There's some animations he's showcased on his website and it's actually pretty good, lots of fluidity and expressiveness.I don't think people realize how much different animation is from still illustrations.I can take dozens of stills from beloved anime and it would look pretty bad too.
>>8069828A common misconception is that "construction" is limited to geometrical shapes. Construction is just drawing simplified forms. These forms can be made of nonsensical shapes or irregular shapes. It is useful when you are unfamiliar with a complex form or volume, or maintaining consistency with a character design. With time and practice you become familiar enough with the subject that you no longer need construction.
>>8070827This. He gives solid advice on fundies but I wouldn't listen to him about anything involving appeal.
If you look at Salvador Dali's drawings you'll see a lot of the similar practices/exercises/drills (spiral forms, wrap around grids, circle joints). The melting abstract forms he made were just extensions of some of these exercises. He also did a lot of shitty mannequins. Actual fraud.
>click on a video to see what the fuss is about>name drop a few old masters>"blahblahblah this one great literally who animator from the 80s for stupid a kid's show">"wow look at all the egg forms for the cutesy mascots"i hate animators so much
>>8071112>Don Blueth>literally whoI hate Zoomers so fucking much.
>>8070963Yeah it can not be understated how electrifying Dermont's advice is. It's like the first time zoomers have seen an actual elder wizard sit down and cut through the years of hearsay gunk that's accumulated online.Dermont unironically saved, and thereby created thousands of new artists.
>>8070893Keep it up, check out Anatomy for Sculptors for figuring out the fat pads and how the breast attach.
>>8071146not a zoomer, just not into animationit's fine if he mentions a name that is relevant to his niche but damn the dickride these industry types do is insane.
>>8070893You're on a good path there. For anatomy I like Bridgman's Constructive Anatomy. Already shilled it before but Matessi's Force: Dynamic Life Drawing was pretty helpful too.

>>8071112>i hate animators so muchIs it cause you can't animate. Lol. Maybe if you were curious you could learn some new skills and some important film and art history.>>8071246You realize he didn't say "never use boxes"? He said that avoid using a box for most forms. >BUT NEVER EVER EVER EVER NEVER NEVER EVER DRAW A RIBCAGE OR HEAD AS A BOX AND ONLY OVAL!!!!You realize the shape of the ribcage is closer to an oval than a box? If you actually watched anatomy lectures or read a book most of them teach something like that. I think you got mind fucked. Did Dermot happen to ruin your income?
Everyone's going on about the boxes but Dermot criticizes a lot of other points from the DAB methodology and its supporters that I think is worth mentioning too. The stuff about having to draw good lines in a single stroke and the overemphasis on drawing entirely from imagination is pretty questionable advice that he's pushed back against. >>8070965Amazing stuff, I love how small you made his face
>>8070963The ripple effect his videos have had is genuinely crazy, I think it will lead to higher quality art videos and advice, and allow people to criticize other peoples teachings, which I'm not sure I've seen anywhere but ic. I've seen people who parrot this box stuff for years only drop it this week since dermots video! I've also seen a lot of beginners realize they been scammed and lied to and they're breaking away from this garbage and actually drawing! I hope more industry/retired people start sharing their knowledge, the online art community needs it.>>8071256Your should study things like poses from old disney movies since that looks close to what you are going for. Also read drawn to life books by walt stachfield, and read up on gesture drawing and do lots of gesture drawings of real people.I would have drawn a full redraw of the character but I have an arm injury right now and dont want to overdo it. I hope it gets across the idea.
ok so i was in jeet discord looking what jeet has to sayjeet has personal beef with dermot and says DaB is getting misinterpretedbut agrees with his general points (don't overdo exercises and don't do too much construction)pretty boring read but jeet went up a few appreciation points for mestill not gonna finish DaB, those 250 boxes were absolutely horrid, even when i stretched them out over a month
this one out of context made me kek(it's about adhd though)
>>8071300>feel the form is the greatest failing of the art educationNo, that would be box coonstructing. Nobody look at this guys "art" btw.
>>8071305>>8071300I think the big issue with DAB that Karim doesn't really see (but that Dermot does) is that DAB fucking sucks for anyone who already HAS poor spatial reasoning skills. It's only really useful for hobbyists who've been drawing for a few years (or experienced artists), or newbies who have a live mentor to help them out. Without enough experience or someone to personally help you, DAB will not help you improve at thinking in 3D.There are practical alternatives to DAB for beginners:>pick up a ball sport as a daily exercise>play video games>get into sculpting simple things>grab a simple 3D form (glassware, a Rubik's cube, fruit) and spend time just feeling it up>>8071320Ironic that he says that considering "feel the form" is simple once you internalize that drawing is no different from working with clay. That's the whole point behind Dermot pushing gesture and line quality over MUH BOXES
>>8071300It’s clear from this post that the jeet has a pet theory about how we learn to draw and sneakily puts it forward as an objectively sound approach. “Develop your spatial reasoning skills by drawing boxes and you’ll gain the capacity to feel the forms”. Yet his forms look like this
>>8071332Flat as a cardboard cutout
>>8071300>I agree with his goal, I just really resent the fact that he's actively lying to people about what I instruct for the purpose of creating a straw man. What the fuck was Dermot lying about? He showed how aimless the dab stuff is, and how it doesn't even teach you to draw anything but boxes.Sounds like hes mad this will genuinely take a hit to his shitty scam course. Checking the draw a box website he gets a cut from New masters academy and Clip studio paint when you use his codes, and he has a Amazon affiliate links, and ad revenue from his youtube videos. He's clearly making a decent amount of money from this despite dab being free, and hes mad someones calling out how his course keeps you stunted and unable to draw anything. >>8071324>There are practical alternatives to DAB for beginners:>>pick up a ball sport as a daily exercise>>play video games>>get into sculpting simple things>>grab a simple 3D form (glassware, a Rubik's cube, fruit) and spend time just feeling it upHell nah. The sculpting is the only thing that's not a time waste and will help. Go buy some cheap plasticine clay (doesn't dry out, its reusable) and start sculpting stuff from real life.
>>8071206>>8071215wish i could still say the same. i feel like i hit that mental block that i hit 2 years ago again. i really want to ask one more time i need help from any anon. this is mentally breaking me AGAIN. i can do isolated studies well because well i can follow the contour lines without knowing the underlying bone structures(like these two anons mentioned these books that i will look for them more to study fat tissues). but for the love of everything good i cant do gestures at all. i looked at hampton, i am trying to understand the force method too. i looked at what proko is doing. full body gesture i cant work with it at all. why does this happen? i over estimate the body structure and after cleaning my gesture and trying to do a cleaner one it just looks so wrong. do i learn anatomy first to understand gesture? i cant seem to grasp the flow of the force of these lines at all. will i get over this stage if i draw more and more and more until i can grasp the flow somehow by repetition? i am willing to go for that route but i am kinda scared if i do shit wrong and learn wrong. i dont wanna end up like a deviant artist who has no idea about anatomy or structure...
>>8071332>>8071335>the person that draws that will tell you with a straight face that the person who draws pic related is giving you bad adviceYou cannot make this up.
>>8071341Ok frend maybe put the anatomy books away for now. Keep them in reach but don't throw yourself into it too deep.I am going to give you two recommendations which may keep u occupied and less worried.First, I'm gonna shill Gnass yet again. He gives you a method for creating very solid and dimensional gestures which you can develop into full figure drawings. It's an conceptual approach (opposed to the measuring approach you find in many ateliers) which is staged (1. gesture, 2. three-dimensional forms, 3. anatomy) and where you are expected not to copy from him, but come up with your own conceptual model for the body (or steal it from someone, knowing you have to develop your own). You can peek into some of the demonstrations and decide if that style of drawing is for you.https://archive.org/download/nma-figure-drawing-with-karl-gnass/NMA%20-%20Figure%20Drawing%20with%20Karl%20Gnass/Second I give you this Will Weston 3 hour lecture which is a dense summary where he teaches a set of simplified ideas to rely on. He doesn't do gesture, but imho it can be useful to you - you really can't just jump from gesture to full detailed anatomy in one go, you need ideas that go inbetween (a stage 2...). Morpho's simplified forms book also teaches this, but it's a bit of a grind to work through.https://online-courses.club/1-will-weston-figure-drawing-lecture/Also found in the course busters telegram
>>8071343In art all the theory in the world won’t stop your pictures from looking like horse shit. That’s why people like Irshad usually stay well clear of art and stick to professional fields where it’s possible to peddle garbage ideas indefinitely without getting called out
>>8071335the jeet made a course focused on form and perspective, while he understands neither.
>>8071352Vilppu is ofc also an option, though i cannot speak much about him. He teaches some of the same things (was actually a close mentor to Gnass) but he is very old and makes me sleepy to listen to.Mattesi can also be interesting if you wanna do more action-focussed stuff, though i find he lets his rythms deform his figures a bit too much.Learning to draw figures is gonna take a long time, it's important to not stress yourself too much out. Always keep an eye on the improvements you made instead of cursing yourself for your drawings looking shit. They will always look shit to you.
>>8071332It reminds me of AI food where everything is ugly and greasy
>>8071341I'm gonna start by saying I think you're being a little too hard on yourself. Your gesture has a good amount of movement to it. Some things you might wanna try-It's fine to get messy with the gesture, I personally think it helps me find the line and form I'm looking for-Try to find the center of gravity of the body. Probably easier in uh..."flatter" poses where you don't have to worry about the z-axis. If you can do that it can help you understand why the feet and legs are positioned where they are.-Try to break the pose down into as few lines of action as possible. Preferably 1 if you can manage it. It looks like you're drawing a dancer there so I think it should be easier here?-If you're timing yourself, I'd say don't worry about that. You shouldn't spend ages trying to get your gesture perfect but you also don't need to do it in like 30 seconds or whatever.(I dunno what the original ref was like so I just made it up as I went along.)
>>8071352>>8071363hey i really thank all of you. i know realize there was a beg thread but i missed it for some reason and asked here even though this is a completely different place. i have started to look at the first webarchive videos and i might be stressing over too much he even mentioned that you can do shapes and general idea of anatomy but realize you cant do gesture its fine and such. i will look more into this guy. and thanks for the reassurance. the beg thread looks really intermediate for me to ask anything there but even the help i got from here is enough for me now. i will grind and grind unlike 2 years ago. doing 1 hours of a copy of anime image and giving up because i couldnt do full body sketches was foolish for me. this time i am taking it seriously. if i ever get better i will probably share a screenshot with you guys comments here in any of those beg threads and will thank you.
>>8070876Erm... a lil help here?
>>8071300You know Irshad would have had a point had he not stubbornly kept Drawabox mostly the way it was nearly a decade now despite all the box grind Reddit anathema Dermot points out. Clearly this issue has been around for ages - No amount of 50/50 rule, clarification on specific homework amounts (3 pages of ellipse exercises, 3 pages of texture exercises, etc) is going to help these art-backrooms victims. Clearly Drawabox was long overdue for a massive overhaul in structure and curriculum, and Irshad has failed spectacularly at that, To that end, I would say, fuck Drawabox. And Fuck Irshad for screwing up what otherwise could've been a really fun fundamental for fledgling artists to get into. As much as I enjoy boxes (I love tenten's art after all, and am taking his course) I would rather see Dermot's way be the way for most fledgling artists, to push the needle back a bit.

The whole 'dynamic sketching' thing was started by schurer with his students (chinks like peter han); ostensibly made in mind for intermediates going into industrial design so theres plenty of structural concepting. no idea how did all that turned into something for complete beginners. fuckin jeets man

I did drawabox and still can't draw. I feel like I was raped.
I withdraw my minor appreciation for the Ihrshad (>>8071300 is me) after reading this absolute retard in the other thread (>>8071470) who suggested drawabox methods can be used for drawing a clothed figure.Burn it to the fucking ground. We need our dergod Führer Dermot to cleanse the internet of this filth.>>8071736Well anon, did you finish 100 of picrel? Surely by then you can draw! That's the promise of the course after all.>>8071341Don't wait too long to post your stuff in /beg/ or /fig/. Worst case your drawings will be called shit by internet strangers. Gnass method is nice because it gives you an understanding to "debug" your own drawings. Sadly he does not serve everything on a silver platter, you will have to really listen to him while he's demo'ing and then a few weeks later listen to them again (maybe draw along if that helps your memory retention).Just some more tidbits for your gesture:- Look what the standing leg is doing, where the center of gravity is. Your figure cannot hold this position and will fall over.- Clavicle and scapula are missing (ok maybe there is a tiny hint for the scapula?), they form a diamond that will not instantly boost your drawing, but are also very important for the anatomy later on (see Will Weston lecture for that).- Ribcage and hipbone are missing or are in a form that is not human... yes that belongs in the gesture, it's not an anatomical detail it's fundamental that your shapes can contain those bones. On the right, the ribcage should peek out due to the stretch, on the left, it should be involved in the squash.- The standing leg is confused where it is pointing to. The upper leg looks like it goes to the right, while the lower leg looks like it goes to the left.- What worked well: You properly identified the centerline on the torso and your proportions are fine in their length.
>>8071783all that shit is utterly unnecessary to draw a box
>>8071300250 boxes was, like, a piece of cake for me. You just draw five boxes, and then call it a day and do something else. Not sure why people lose their minds over this shit.
>>8071300He's got a point. Whenever an art "teacher" just says "feel the form" then my mind immediately translates that into "I don't know what I am talking about!" Students need exercises, incremental steps.

>>8071953It's the same guy, and I haven't gotten to the chests. Drawabox is just one of many tools I am using to learn to draw. Have you finished the course?I'll post my mushroom from lesson 3, though.
>>8071960Also, here's something I posted in the /beg/ thread, but it isn't manga so no one over there seems interested.
>>8071960Ok that's pretty decent.I got something out of the first ~80 or so boxes but then got nothing more out of it and even developed a visceral reaction to it. Doesn't matter that it was just 5 a day, It doesn't really matter that is was piss easy, i just found it on an emotional level revolting to perform that mindless busywork every day. (Now, i actually find that repeatedly drawing a subject from imagination IS a good exercise. When you take an individual bone or body part, and you move on when you think you've grokked it. That's something you get way more out of, rather than drawing geometrical forms you have no connection to.)Then I did lesson 2, got nothing really out of it, looked at the 250 cylinder exercise and noped the fuck out.I admit the insect drawing stuff later on does look pretty interesting and is actually a good subject for the dynamic sketching method, but can't get myself to work through the plant stuff which i just find terribly uninteresting.Lesson 1-3 just feel so terribly bland when instead you could be learning how to draw figures and animals and cityscapes the proper way.
>>8071983holy soul
less. AAIIEEE save me irish man!
>>8071986A lot of what we human adults do is mindless busywork. For me, I sort of managed to turn it into a pretty cozy occassion. Evening. Lamp on in my cramped room and grooving to tunes while doing menial exercises. You learn to appreciate the routine. Did you really not get anything out of lesson 2? The texture exercises really challenged my observation skills. >I admit the insect drawing stuff later on does look pretty interesting and is actually a good subject for the dynamic sketching method, but can't get myself to work through the plant stuff which i just find terribly uninteresting. The lessons are all right there for free. I say if it interests you then just cheat and go for it. Skip the other parts. Irshad may be a lot of things, but I would not call him a grifter. Also, definitely do not pause on drawing figures. There are plenty of resources out there and you don't need to go through them one at a time.
>>8071991Norsemen in reality>what the fuck is an "Atlantis?"
>>8071986>repeatedly drawing a subject from imagination IS a good exerciseExactly. Sycra has two videos covering this and Jason Brubaker has a whole 90 day book on the topic. Memory drawing/iterative drawing/cognitive drawing/drawing from imagination, they're all different ways of describing the same thing. In order to improve at drawing, you need to be able to draw what you see so that you can draw what you know. Observational drawing and memory drawing feed into each other. The more time you spend looking at your reference/subject and then producing drawings of that subject, the easier it is to draw from memory (and when you draw from memory, you make what you've observed stick with you). With that being said, DAB is certainly better suited for people who already have a knack for thinking in 3D and want to improve at perspective. Irshad really does not want to admit that DAB fails to be accessible in this regard.
>>8071948You need to go back and re-read my entire post. You hardly understood a word I said.
>>8070262Crazy how good and clear the animation is. It really has all gone down to shit.
>>8069872Kek, he does
>>8071296Low cr here. Your gesture looks the same except for the leg.>arm injuryOldest excuse in the book...
>>8070262nice
>>8070262I had to stop watching older animation clips. The medium we were so close to perfecting was fucking robbed from us.
>>8072114Did we lose the technology to make animation like Fantasia or Treasure Planet or did we just lose the talent?
>>8072452We lost the funding. Normies no longer wanna see traditional animation.Very rarely you still find traditional animation in ads (like Pomeroy recently did an ad for Prada https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfpXSUpGoRE), but it is seen as a rare novelty. In our genAI future, 3d animation may await the same fate.
"Feel the form" Is a legitimate technique, but I've only been able to do it stoned as fuck. Vilppu and anyone that parrots that idea just have different brain structures that make it possible to do sober.
>>8072495same. if i try to draw sober i just get frustrated and give up in like 20 mins. im hoping my brain gets permanently transformed through chronic weed use and i become a master artist
>>8072495>>8072503Drugs help me too, unironically. I think I finally understand why so many artists where alcoholics and smokers.

>>8069430Art is inherently mathematic, the same measures will always produce the same result. Brainlets like you tell themselves art is done by intuition as cope for not being able to analyze what makes things look good.
>>8069675Drawing boxes is nothing more than drawing a simplified version of any other object, but if you don't understand the relation in your head you won't get anywhere. Also, get away from this board of gatekeeping failures, most people here give terrible advice.
>>8072596>most people here give terrible advice.i dont>Drawing boxes is nothing more than drawing a simplified version of any other objectbut you do
>>8072590holy shit dog check yrself before you wreck yrselfi asked claude to show me something stupid and it showed me your post
>>8072596the advice i got for the karl gnass about trying to understand the human gesture helped me to some extent. i was not even able to do anything simple as these or as semi good as these. the confident i got from watching that dude is the reason i come here often to check what people say. you might say this is fucking dogshit but to me its a really a great start to understand the flow of the contour and how body forms around shapes. i lack the anatomy knowledge for now but i will keep studying and lurking here to get any tidbit of the information i can get. That one person's words, i got more help from that dude and dermot which nobody talks at any spaces we all frequent.
>>8072590bitch, just shut up.
>>8071630Thank you. This is a huge video, so I'm only skimming at the moment, and I haven't gotten to any part that is specific to DAB. But he's comparing other people's construction methods to his own, so he's not against construction the way a lot of posters are intimating. Also, his advice is intrinsically tied to his style and to western animation. Do you guys really think his criticisms matter to someone who *wants* to draw like Krenz? Or a form of animation that is more demanding on spacial accuracy? This is bordering on the hammer and nail fallacy. What's "right" depends on your goals. Every school of art, every style of drawing or animation, is in some part based on a rejection of what came before. So people, please think carefully about what you actually want before you accept this or anything else as dogma.
>>8072801>he's not against construction the way a lot of posters are intimating. He's against constructing EVERYTHING with boxes. He makes more of a point in constructing things with bone and muscle in mind, not boxing everything in>Also, his advice is intrinsically tied to his style and to western animation. His advice is literally >do a gesture>finish it in any way you see fitThat's it, extremely simple message that calls for expressive figures. And him showing that segment where the guy tries to draw a dog from imagination or a guy turned into mannequins, you see how incredible stiff they are. He's trying to tell that form follows function, while also mocking tards that think doing 12000 circles will actual help them be better artistsYou should really watch the video you're trying to comment on before commenting on it
