where the hell am I supossed to get commissions on that isn't the shithole disboard that makes you read thousands of retarded rules with hidden morse codes and bullshit just to get you verified oh but then you need to wait at least 80 years and find a hidden key up your butthole to promote your commissions
I've been trying to commission people from /ic/ for a /tg/ project and it has been hit or miss. A lot of searching through the chaff and hoping the person you're interested in has posted in a socials thread. The Socials Thread is where I had the best luck, if there isn't one of those on the catalog I would suggest starting one. I read that there used to be a commission thread specifically but that was jannied away years ago
You were supposed to upload your drawings to social media so people interested in your art could subscribe/bookmark/follow you. Some of your fans might even be interested in supporting you financially. How do you even get to the point where you are "good enough to do commissions" without ever sharing your work online? You have probably been drawing for years. Where are all those drawings?
A simple trick I've learned is to pretend you're already taking commissions.that thing you just drew because you were bored or horny? it's a commission. Yeah some dude definitely paid $60 for this thing. No you won't say who it was. Yes you have quite a busy schedule but you should be able to find time to draw my OC getting fucked stupid. Also just suck the Discord's mod girldick, anon, that's a job, if most people can sit at a desk and not call anybody a nigger goyslave for eight hours you can pretend some dude on Discord is funny and an expert in dank memes for ten minutes.
>>8068952Just add something like 3/5 comm slops are taken, update it sometimes so people will believe you're busy. Label your work as "commission" sometimesIt also helps if you have a non shitty consistent username across several sites that say how people can reach out to you. Bonus if your work is easy to find, has been posted on multiple websitesOf course, you need to have a niche, not shitty drawing skills, enjoy what you're drawing (it's visible). Because if you're some 4chan autist who draws the most genetic looking stuff, lack any drawing skills and can't draw for more than 4 times a year, nothing will save you>just suck the Discord's mod girldick>doesn't have their own discord serverngmi, make a discord server/community, may even try to sell private lessons there. I'd only forget about this idea if you already had a discord server in the past, and got tired of moderating it or if it got nuked because of spam (that's why the server should be semi private, so only people who are your fans will be there)
I'm not the OP, but one thing that has prevented me from openly accepting commissions beyond my one regular client is setting a price for my work. Setting an average price for characters and backgrounds is complicated enough, but in my case, it's even more difficult because people contact me to draw (and even write) comics. Logically, I should base my rates on what I charge my regular client, but some time ago, we agreed on a standard price per piece regardless of how complex or simple the image is.>>8068974Is it really necessary to create a Discord community? I don't think I'm good enough to teach anyone, and I don't see what a group of people who like my drawings would do together. Besides, I'm a fucking autist and I hate social interaction.
I used to have a bunch of instagram accounts but none of them took off so I kept on deleting and making new ones. Right now I'm trying to see if twitter is gonna work. I know it's a bad habbit but I either completely forget that I even made the account or I just log on it to post and leave. I've had a couple of commissions but they were by my somewhat friends they're not active anymore which is why I'm broke as shit right now
>>8068952This is the most pathetic comment I've ever read.
>>8068974>make a discord server/communityI always wondered how random nobodies cope with starting discord servers because wouldn't you have to be a janny 24/7 or find someone trustworthy enough to janny for you? What if you wake up tomorrow and some sharty troll spammed CP and DNB all over the channels? Are there automod bots to deal with that?
>>8069020>>8069540What I talked about is an adaptation of how streamers approach it - they make small private chat rooms with people who donate them often or donate a lot. I suggested you to do the same, just for people who are your the highest Patreon tier subscribes or regular customersAnd by teaching I didn't meant to do something like an entire course, more like be open to the idea of someone asking you to draw with them together and taking some money for it. I've seen it working even for small literally who artists who don't even draw that well
I have one consistent client that I draw his OCs for but now he's asking me to come up with ideas and I have nothing. I'm retarded.
>>8068952>A simple trick I've learned is to pretend you're already taking commissions.>that thing you just drew because you were bored or horny? it's a commission. Yeah some dude definitely paid $60 for this thing. No you won't say who it was. Yes you have quite a busy schedule but you should be able to find time to draw my OC getting fucked stupid.Actually possibly some solid advice. It makes you seem legitimate, reliable, and because we're all money brained sheep, far more tempting than someone with no clients or customers.I'm pretty certain that pretending your business has customers and is busier than it is, is common advice, though I can't recall the actual wording of said advice.
>>8070472It doesn't work.If you want commissions the only real option is to "be an artist people want to commission". That is, have very attractive art. Or be famous, which often requires the latter anyway. Those are the only two options, anyone saying otherwise is falling for placebos. The internet is far too big now to regularly get commissions from randoms if you're begshit. There's too many good artists with open slots. Your competition is everyone, if you don't stack up to everyone, you don't get commissions.
>>8068869where the fuck are you trying to get commissions lmfucking ao my ao, what rules are you talking about niggaa, post your shit and talk to people, you will get commissions, what are you trying to sell them in facebook marketplace or some? lol
>>8070449I'm going through the same thing, except he wants me to develop his ideas further.Interestingly, he hasn't asked me for anything this month and I'm short on money. I would publicly announce that I'm accepting commissions, but I have no idea how much to charge, particularly for comics, which is what people interested in my work are most interested in.
>>8070499fuckass disboard commission servers theres thousands of bullshit text you gotta read in most of them just tp be able to post
>>8070526How much does he usually pay you? Can you post a comic of comparable quality to what you can provide?
>>8070646He usually pays me $120 per illustration, no matter how complex it is. Sometimes he asks me to draw a couple of characters in a room. Other times, he asks me to draw several characters outdoors. Sometimes, he even asks me to draw a short comic.>Can you post a comic of comparable quality to what you can provide? Most of the images I create for him are exclusive to his Patreon, so I can only share the ones he himself has posted on Twitter. The first image is a personal drawing, the short comic is one of his commissions, and the last drawing is something I did for myself a few weeks ago. apologize if these images are a bit strange.
>>8069020You should also look up what other artists are doing. When I set my prices I looked up a bunch of other people's price pages first.
>>8070449>>8070526>>80706523 pieces of advice: one option is asking an LLM for ideas, I understand the initial revulsion to the notion but if you truly have no other options then at least there's that. Next would be to ask online, maybe in a relevant 4chan thread or making your own, asking around the topic by presenting something similar but not directly related if you're feeling awkward about it being traced back to you. Last is to just not take it too seriously, if you can choose to regard the request more casually then you'll likely take more liberties with the subject matter and be open to more ideas than if you're trying to be too serious about it so as not to offend the person commissioning you, plus you can always run it by them to make sure they're comfortable with the idea.
>>8070692I've been looking at how much other artists charge to get an idea of how much I should charge, but I haven't made my mind up yet. On the other hand, I've previously accepted some casual clients who have made me self-conscious about this sort of thing. In the past, some people have approached me, offering me no more than $25 per illustration and $60 per comic page. Interestingly, these tend to be the most difficult clients. They asked for increasingly complex work and expected me to help them develop their own ideas.>>8070696I asked an LLM for ideas a couple of times, but its suggestions were always painfully generic. However, your other two suggestions sound quite good. At one point, I felt unable to come up with anything my client would like. So, I relaxed and drew five thumbnails of the first things that came to mind. He ended up liking four of them.
I'm >>8070652I apologize for bringing this up again, but do you think these prices are fair?>full body image of a character with a simple background: $50>extra characters: +$20>complex background: +$30>full color comic page (between three and six panels with a maximum of three characters per panel): $130>extra panels: +$15>extra characters: +$8>line art: Half the regular priceDo you think my price is too high? I only have just over 2900 followers, but I've shared my content in several places.
>>8068869That's one chonky rabbit, also, I have no idea how to get more commissions. I post my art, and wait? LMAO
>>8070905I had to force myself to do this, but price yourself at least a bit higher than you assume you're worth, or at a price point that doesn't make you feel like you're losing more than you're receiving otherwise you will have a miserable time and drag your feet on every paid project. It might feel wrong but as you've described, the cheapskates who go for lower priced or free art will always be like that because they are desperate and needy and for whatever brown person reasons, they will feel entitled to as much from you as they can take. Glad the other thing worked out, it's really hard to feel motivated to draw if you're not having fun.
>>8071595I'd go higher, seems like you're still holding back. When you price too low it almost comes off as a preemptive apology and subconsciously I think people respect that less, of course too high comes off as arrogant and leads to the same thing so you'll need to find a decent middle ground that says you know what you're worth and that's that. If you don't want to push base price too high then subtly jew the customer by inflating the extra stuff prices instead, or if you raise the price across the board but still feel bad you could do occasional small free pieces like in a raffle or something or do an occasional discount raffle. I could be wrong though, I haven't done comms in a while so my suggestions might be out of touch in the current market. Personally I feel you're undervaluing yourself so I still say raise the price until it is at a point you are kind of excited to have and can mostly live up to and doesn't feel like you're screwing people over too much.
>>8071634In an ideal world. Realistically, if you have a social media account then it's advised to maintain a consistent presence rather than only speak up when you have a full piece finished. Some examples would be like partial screenshots or rough draft screenshots of what you're working on or taking some piece of your own work and doing an edit to make some kind of meme-ish thing out of it. Even crummy artists can get engagement if they're entertaining enough.
>>8068891Used to draw a lot for /tg/ untill I was chased out of the drawthreadsHave you tried the commission sheet on the drawthreads? I bet my name is still there lol, I should check out someday
