Alice-anon, if you need an assistant for your upcoming serialization, please post here or in Ganmo, I'd like to work on your manga.
>>8067787Get a load of this bottom feeding faggot. You will never be a mangaka.
>>8067787blog?
>>8067821Bro its literally the same guy who keeps spammin about that one anon who showed his Alice pitch its not his actual art
I see this in western comics and localized manga but why are italics and bold words overused? Like every text bubble has at least one. Most of the time the emphasis isn't even needed.
>>8067839I try to use them rarely to signify nouns that I want the reader to remember. Or if its a persons speaking style to emphasize words.
>>8067839Dont just consider emphasis but consider how it can differntiate how one character speaks versus another. It can imply that they have a unique inflection and a way of saying things. Also if nothing else seeing the font play out the exact same way looks boring on the page
>>8067843Do you have examples? Because that seems like the exact case to overuse.
>>8067849heres an example of it being overused
>>8067858This sequence plays out fine in isolation anon. I suppose if this were a repeated pattern throughout the pages a reader can notice the pattern and get tired of it but if this is done sparingly then something like your pic can work just fine.
>>8067862I just wanted to hate on clock striker. Theres worse examples but I don't know where the comic is posted online to search
Is it better to have your art style become gayer over time or less gay?
>>8067865Just seems like a complete devolution of artstyle than anything. I'm actually not terribly familiar with Jojo, so I wouldn't have even guessed these were the same character.
>>8067865Toriyama's art also heavily devolved. I'm a fan of both mangaka, but I can't stand their latest works. I always have to argue about it with fanboys too.
>>8067875
>>8067865it getting gayer was a good thing, middle to late part 7 has some of his best work ever, and if you extend it specifically to color work and stand alone pieces he was still putting out bangers thru a large chunk of part 8, it's clear he lost his new spark that he got from the monthly serialization at some point during jojolion tho (or at least his age caught up to him) and he defaulted to much more squished samey characters and messier linework
>>8067839It's standard practice in comic typesetting, going back to the mid-20th century. The idea is they italicize/bold the keywords in the text bubble, I guess with the intention of making it clearer for speedreading kiddos.Personally I hate it. Makes every line of dialog read like it's dripping with sarcasm, and it often feels like the wrong words are highlighted.>>8067842For the love of god please don't. It just feels like you're talking down to the reader, saying "remember this one dummy". Trust your readers a little more. Nobody likes feel patronized, not even dummies.>>8067843>Also if nothing else seeing the font play out the exact same way looks boring on the pageI have never once in my life felt this. The text is just the medium through which the dialog is conveyed. Ideally I don't even notice I'm reading text at all. Playing with that only takes me out of it, makes me conscious of the text and gets in the way of following the story smoothly. No likey, no sir.
Let‘s say I finished my first chapter. Realistically what should I do next.Upload somewhere and hope people will find it?
>>8067891The only other option is to submit it to some sort of publisher or contest.

>>8067892Yeah, do they look for fresh artists or do they want to see you having followers already?>>8067901Not that i have a n actual choice. I would get whatever someone offers me. But there are 3 possibilitys. Japan, i don't know the language, my comic is not Japan centered as well. America, feels like most open to any kind of comic and it has a potentially big market.A small publisher from my own country. I can use a language a know, but it's basically a dead end right? But probably the most realistic way to get something going at all.>>8067904I will write a review later. From the first glance art looks top tier amateur. Paneling is weird, though.
reminder there's not a single successful white male mangaka
reminder white males make up less than 1% of aspiring mangaka.
>>8067920I'm sorry for bringing this up again, but I still haven't found a clear answer to it.Why hasn't anyone in the west been able to make something on par with manga?Let's take away all the unnessary details and get down to the bare minimum. It doesn't have to actually be financially successful, that's an issue of marketing, advertising, etc.Whether pic related made millions of dollars or nothing at all, makes no difference to the fact that it looks great. The freetime/workethic/production schedule is not important either. Manga artists doing it as their job put in like 10+ hours a day, but they also produce huge quantities of work in a relatively short time. It doesn't really make much difference whether a completed manga took 2 years or 10 years, or was just a bit shorter. You can absolutely make a long enough story to be worthwhile as a weekend warrior.I'm just not seeing the obstacle here. Anyone could have drawn pic related, or any other super successful manga. As just lines on a page, that's all it is.Why can I not go to twitter or whatever and just find some random western dude posting their art they made for fun but which is at a level high enough to stand alongside manga? What's the issue?
>>8067904It will be quite harsh anon. The good thing is the art, you could make a successful manga with your art skills. Your storytelling is bad, though.Cover: the girl is good, boring pose, but could work. The graphical elements are bad. The cover looks way more amateurish than the comic itself. I think you will lose a big procentage of potential readers with the cover alone.Panels are weird, as i said earlier. Some have no gutters at all. Some pages have a giant horizontal gutter and very thin vertical gutter, why? You did too much of the "look at me i'm a westerner and i'm smart with my pannels"-thing.First page, too much of some guys talking about something. Do a big establishing shoot, or show the mc better. The whole story is, there is a hostage situation, 3 girls met, on says like the nephew of mu aunt is the hostage taker and she was nice to me, therefore i will sneak in and save him? And than one of the girls head transforms into a monster?Makes no sense for a normal story. If it supposed to be bizarre and absurd i don't think it works.Page 5. Is it supposed to be Fujimoto style of reaction shot? It does not work. The drawing itself is confusing, first i thought the girls were fighting over the cup, before i realised, the hand belongs to the giant titted moe girl.1 shot the look confused.2 shot the look at each other.1 shot they have the same look as in 1I don't know, it's not bad, bad. But unnecessary. Fujimoto has characters that are all fucked up. Just showing them be that makes sense. Thats more oldschool film making. In a modern Netflix adaptation the guy would to to a shrink ant tell him how fucked up he is and stuff. The nonsensical cool poses and jumps are really unnecessary in my eyes. If you want show action, write a story that has action in it, you know?Make me like the mc, or at least find her interesting before anything else.I sound like a hater, probably, i respect the amount of work, but i don't think it works very well.
*clear throat*Otomo's speedlines.
>>8067924There is no pipeline from the west to Japan. 10 years ago, without ai-translators, internet adaptation and so on, it was basically impossible. The biggest thing is. You are a talented artist and storyteller in America. You have sooo many ways to make stuff, comics, games, movies, all in your own language in your own country. You would have to deny soo many opportunitys it's just makes no sense. So all the talented people are filtered. Only hardcore weebs left. And now those mids have to compete against the talented people in Japan with their hands tied behind their backs.
>>8067924contI'm not trying to bash the west, pointing out that basically nobody has succeeded. I present it as a serious problem. If there is some obstacle that is preventing us from making something onpar with manga, then we need to clear that obstacle first. Continuing to make subpar works is meaningless if the quality never improves. Is there an obstacle at all? anime and manga is bigger than ever before, maybe the obstacle is just a lack of exposure to good inspiration material, and maybe that means the obstacle is gone now and within a few years from now we will start seeing some serious works appear.Maybe it's just a statistical issue? Maybe Japan just has soo many more artists doing manga than the west has doing comics that we just simply haven't rolled the dice enough to find a worthwhile example. My big fear is that the issue is mindset. That the way the cogs are turning in the heads of Japanese artists is just different from ours, and we don't get it.As you make your lines, what are you thinking? What is that line? What is the nature of this stylized art that cartoony yet not cartoony? When they draw their noses as dots, are they thinking of dots or are they thinking of 3d forms and it just comes out like a dot, but that we fail to see this and copy a dot? It's just lines on a page, but of course it is more than that, it's the knowledge to draw the right lines. I've watched all of Manben and read countless interviews of manga artists, I've heard them talking about their mindset and philosophy and inspirations, etc. I've seen them making their lines. I've seen all their tricks but I'm still not getting it. What is the issue?
Found out regular Molotow refill for black markers works very well with Japanese dip nibs, very good flow, very mat. Works even with the tiny maru pens.I was annoyed at how shiny my india ink tries, i was looking for some alternative. Manga ink is very expensive. I bought the big ass bottle of refill for 10 euros or something and it works perfectly fine.
>>8067926not him but it's chapter 6 did you read the rest for context
>>8067924imo its in part like how NFL/NBA attracts all the top tier talent who could've exceled in other sports burgerland is more underwhelming inthe big artistic talent just work in other areas like the film industry leaving a much smaller mostly amateur pool working on mangacould change in the coming years as manga's global influence has become undeniable though
>>8067924It's just a matter of supply and demand. Nobody reads manga in the west. If you want to share your manga art on Xitter then you will have to pretend to be Japanese and use japanese hashtags because the only people there who care about manga are Japanese. There just is no culture for this in the west.
>>8067932>not him but it's chapter 6 did you read the rest for contextOh, sorry, thought it's first. That would change a lot, i guess. Not sure if i gonna read all of it, though.
>>8067934anime culture in the west has been taken over by ironic weebs and e-girls
Forgot to attach a Fujimoto example, as well. Not my best review.
>>8067936Yea it's pretty much just americans being retarded gooners. If you don't pander to their taste nobody cares about you.
>>8067938But manga popular in America is mostly normie tier, no?
>>8067939Normies would never care about random westerners making manga. They are busy consuming their mainstream shit.
>>8067914Legends like Araki and Toriyama both made their debut by submitting their works to contests. Neither would win, but they still got necessary recognition and attention from editors. They kept doing that until getting something published/serialized. Modern mangaka like Gotouge followed a similar path. Even mangaka like Sui Ishia who made a few independent projects before Tokyo Ghoul, would later enter contests. ONE, the creator of One Punch Man, is often used as an example of how anyone can make it by randomly uploading their manga online, but even he wouldn't have gotten anywhere if it weren't for a professional in the industry reaching out to him. That's not very different from someone like Toriyama who had professionals reach out to him after entering contests. If you wanted fame & success as a westerner, your best bet would be trying to top the charts of sites like webtoon and hope to get published. However, there isn't much of an audience there for specific genres. Unless you want to write romcoms for women in their mid twenties, I feel it's hopeless. Learning Japanese and potentially moving to Japan is also an option, albeit an unrealistic one that only adds to the crushing workload of this hobby.Sorry for sounding a little doomer-like, but this is reality.>>8067924Read what I wrote above. There is no industry in the west. Without an industry, there's no incentive to create anything in this genre for any reason other than personal enjoyment. This also causes an overall low quality of work. You don't have 1,000,000 different young Japanese men all competing with each other and trying to stand out among the rest.
>>8067941>Unless you want to write romcoms for women in their mid twenties, I feel it's hopeless.This. The only professional manga artists in my country are literally women drawing romcoms. that seems to be the only way how to get published here.
You probably would have bigger chances getting published if you create manga-inspired band dessine comics and reach out to some french publishers.
>>8067941Yeah, actually a lot of foids like mainstrem shonen as well, as long as there are enough girls and cute man.So a dark shonen should or a lighter seinen should work fine, if it's good of course. For me personally, the goal is to make 20k a year. That would give me the freedom to pursue manga full time and get as obsessed as possible with it. And hopefully land a hit.15k would work as well. 10k or less would be shit, but could still work...That's not thaat much.
>>8067947>actually a lot of foids like mainstrem shonen as wellWell, the key point here is probably MAINSTREAM, foids are biologically drawn to mainstream, but i think it could work, as long as you give a little bit extra quality over the competition.
>>8067858Why is it ALWAYS like this with western manga?
>>8067949that's why saying art doesn't matter is a cope it's hard to get attention even with good art good luck getting anyone giving second of their time to your beg scribbles
>>8067951What am I looking at?
Volume 3, first review. Like come on, if you want make manga, but not willing to grind at least for a couple of years, the fuck are you actually doing?
>>8067934>Nobody reads manga in the west. This is just patently untrue, and you sound like an oblivious retard.
>>8067953>that's why saying art doesn't matter is a cope100% paneling, char design, composition... short visual storytelling is more important than the dialogs in a manga. I think what people say most of the time. If your storytelling, char dis, composition and so on are good, high detailed rendering is not that important.
>>8067954At 3 volumes published in 3 years.
>>8067958It isn't even all that uncommon for manga to take like 6-8 months for the next volume to come out, even for actual official Japanese ones where the work is already done and all that needs to be done is translate, typeset, and print the volumes.Especially for smaller publishers like Seven Seas.
>>8067959Do they have assistants?
>>8067959Ditch the publisher, post online. This shit is poison for any success. Grind as hard as possible, it's not hot enough, pause it, start a new manga.Maybe in the 80s it was different. But today momentum is everything. The momentum of your story. And the momentum of your publishing schedule.
>>8067956Obviously there are people who read manga but it's not enough to get any recognition as an amateur. There barely is any doujin culture in the west. The whole industry is centralized in Japan to the point you will have to learn Japanese to get any recognition.
>>8067962pyw
>>8067961You will gain a reputation as an author who doesn't finish anything and any small number of fans you do have will be disappointed.
>>8067961>Ditch the publisher, post online. This shit is poison for any success.Well, yeah, I actually completely agree with this, but it was kind of irrelevant to the point that I am making. I'm just saying it isn't uncommon for like, the English version of a Japanese tank to have half a year or more between releases, even on official, professionally published works.I agree that online is the way to go, and then if you do physical print books, you offer bonus materials, or other stuff to incentivize people to still buy, or your dedicated fans may still buy anyway.>>8067962>There barely is any doujin culture in the westA big part of this is that fan-doujins are a big thing in Japan, and because the west generally has a chokehold on their IPs and are so gung-ho about going after "copyright infringements" it is an idea that kind of dies on the vine. That being said, I think there are plenty of people who just completely overlook anime conventions, since tons of people sell their stuff at artist alley, and have books and other work. So many people just completely ignore or don't even look at information so they assume no one is making any money, but I've seen plenty of people on YT who can make even 5 digits in a single weekend at big, well-known cons. Its just that there are tons of drawbacks to big cons, and you can still make money at smaller cons, just not as much. But they tend to be way less work.
>>8067920Even brown indian can get serialized.Seriously, what is wrong with you all, white goys? All you have done is just made Japan become more woke and pro-censorship.
>>8067971white people are too busy watching podcasts about how the world is ending to do anything
>>8067970>people on YT who can make even 5 digits in a single weekend at big, well-known consNot everyone in the west lives in USA where they have big comic cons. The west as a whole might be a big manga consumer but if you just take a single country in the west then chances are big that there is barely any culture surrounding manga in it.
>>8067971see >>8067922
>>8067823>its not his actual artdo you have a single fact to back that up?
>>8067975They're not all just in the US. Some of them are in places like Canada, the UK, Germany, etc.I mean, I can't exactly say myself how big those cons are, and sure, it might not be able make those same numbers everywhere, but the truth is that many people here don't seem to take it seriously, and like it really is: A job. You have to actually put the effort and work into it, a lot of time, and kind of be multi-faceted making lots of different things. Some of these people are making money on five or six different things (cons, online shops, book sales, patreon, etc.)
>>8067979>many people here don't seem to take it seriously, and like it really is: A jobIt's just not a realistic carreer path. Getting published is very difficult and your options are very limited in the west. Add to this that making manga is very difficult in general and you simply don't have a realistic chance of ever making money with this.I just draw for myself. I don't ever expect t get published. That's also why I draw whatever I want. I will try to get commissions on the internet maybe and if that doesn't work maybe I will change my style to something more "family firendly" . But I don't expect to ever make a living with this.
>>8067967Nobody will care for an obscure title that never got a following. If you have people to care, than sure, that would be bad for your reputation.>>8067970>the English version of a Japanese tank to have half a year or more between releasesThe momentum is carried on by the Japanese fans, and by people reading online. I don't know why they do it, but i don't see how it would help with anything. If it takes you too long, you will loose the people who would like to read the story first time on paper.>>8067979>GermanyI know some people who has visited German anime cons, they say it's quite big. I never visited. Probably i could print out my manga and try to sell for a couple of bucks, but without a license it may give me jail time.I hate poorope so much, bros. I want to live in a jungle paradise with cute brown girls, like the Philippines and not in this third world shit hole.
Can someone tell whats up with this "alice guy"?
>>8067984I believe even the worst manga here could get at least one regular reader.
There is a joint venture of 4 eu publishers. 4 biggest comic languages/countries after English and Japanese. Namely Italian, Spanish, German and French of course. They even bring out a magazine, every quarter of the year.https://mangaissho.com/All auteurs are female...
I don't want to make stuff like this.
>>8067988Also notice how young they all are.If you aren't published already in your 20s it's basically over.
>>8067990Don't do stuff like that... or what?I would actually like to. If i had an extra life to spare, i would like to start a shojo series and switch it to something edgy and incely after a while, to troll the foids, haha.
>>8067991What? Most of them are late 20s, early 30s?I'm actually surprised they that old. Seeing the quality and themes of the comics i would assume most of them are teens.
>>806799420s and early 30s is not old.
I gave an example of why it's hard to succeed: Industry. It is not because you are not Japanese. It is not because you are not a woman.
>>8067995Aspiring Japanese mangaka are around 20-25.From what we can see you can be on top of the game till your late 50s, after that you get slower or and worse. So, yeah, even if you're 40, you have still15 good years, most likely. And if you smart enough with managing assistants, 10-20 years more.
>>8067988Does anybody read this?

>>8067999Usually if the numbers are public, gemini knows them.
Gemini says high tier cartoonist from this mag sell in the 100k, mids 10-50k and noobs less. But i doubt it to be honest. Those are the numbers of Centuria, one of the hype Shonen Jump titles. • Volume 1: ~2,040 copies sold initially.• Volume 2: ~2,569 copies.• Volume 3: ~3,500 copies.• Volume 5: ~4,465 copies. So a literally who from europastan sells ten and hundred times more?Really? Europa is not a shit hole after all?
>>8068005you are literally latinx.
I'm still reading Chansaw Man. And Fujimoto never uses cartoonish or chibby versions of his characters. I read on reddit, many fans like that a lot. They say it's more serious this way. Less suspension of disbelieve required (would be my explanation for that). What i thought, would a bizarrely "realistic" art like pic related work? I don't think Fuji ever uses it on human faces, on demons only. What do you think, is too cartoonish in a sense and would be perseved less serious as well?
It has never been a better time to become a manga artist in Japan than now, anon.

I selled my car to make my manga
>>8068040>please read my storyAnother no-draw, welcome to the club.
>>8067990>>8067992Webtoon is a very unfair platform. The only things that get any exposure at all are things that are already the most popular with massive followings, and it's largely theorised that you have to pay to get your stuff put on the front page to be seen.Furthermore it has no real separation of genres or demographic so every category is just the same stuff. And it's pretty much exclusively romance slop for women. If you posted Demon Slayer on here, imagining that it never existed elsewhere, it would get no exposure whatsoever.
>>8068042You fuckers do everything but drawing.

>>8068065schizos often cling strongly to one singular thing and post about it everyday for years, sometimes decades. It could be the most insignificant of things, maybe a cashier asks them if they like a certain band, and then everyday for the rest of their life, everytime they speak to that cashier they talk about that band, they don't even particular care about it themselves, they're just crazy people
>>8068044this is the truth. webtoons first of all are not even manga. Calling them comics is a stretch too. Its more like pulp fiction comics but with a modern slop twist. They successfully created the shittiest product imaginable and of course the main consumer of it is women. I think most people here are not interested in making romance slop meant to be hit a checklist of tropes. When we're talking about manga, most people here are talking about something similar to the golden age of early 2000s, where a well drawn and cool manga manga can just be created by one talented artist, be good or even decent, and then people read it because they like it. That world is over. And it never even existed in the west. We simply dont have a population that reads manga. Youth that read manga today are reading what they are told to read by the zeitgeist, they're not actually perusing catalogs and trying things out. So in a way, art quality is the most important. You can't just make a story that's amazing, most people online now don't have the mental capacity to appreciate and be moved by a good story. They only care about art quality and social approval.so "making it" as a westerner has never been about skill. You can't just make a great story and then get popular, that era of planet earth is over. Its better to focus on the last generation of people who remember the world before covid and before social media and try to carve uot a little spot for yourself on the internet. Because its going to get a low browner and dumber and artificial.
here's another test page I quickly threw together, I gotta get started on a one shot short after this.
What's the most well drawn webcomic/amateur online comic book purely in terms of art quality? Is Ramia-Yana pretty much the best the current scene has to offer?
>>8068072>they only care about art quality>so "making it" as a westerner has never been about skillart is a skill genius
>>8068072I've been trying to pinpoint the exact kind of comic/manga I mean when I say I want comics more like manga. The easy answer is, it's just mainstream anime/manga, but what is it? How can I describe it without saying mainstream anime/manga?When I'm asking for comics, I say I don't want capeshit, and so they give me the Walking Dead, but I don't want that either, so they give me Transmetropolitan or something, I don't want that either, so they give me Asterix, and I just keep going through all the wrong picks, Judge Dredd, Scott Pilgrim, Sin City, Saga, Cerebus, Dick Tracy, Tintin, Blacksad, Usagi Yojimbo, The Boys, Watchmen, Flash Gordon, etc etc, I don't want any of these. These don't appeal to me, and they don't appeal to anyone like me either. There is a kind of person, like me, who will watch something like Deathnote or Bleach, and who will likely also enjoy One Punch Man and Naruto, who will also enjoy Fullmetal Alchemist and Yugioh, and there's also a good chance that they'll branch out and enjoy things like Sailor Moon, Lucky Star, and K-On, It's the typical anime fan, it's a clear sphere of interest with a hotspot at the those largest titles. It's obviously a huge market, and I want people to start making western comics like it, both so I can have more to read, so I can buy more without having to bother with translation or imports, so I can have stuff that reflects my own culture and environment, is made by people of my own country and presents a career path for artists in the west that is similar to what Japan has with manga, so that even myself, if I'm good enough, could make a comic, call it a comic, have it be beloved by people in the same way that people enjoy anime/manga, and not have to deal with any of the baggage of it being some foreign thing.
>>8068086Making a comic that's like manga instead of manga, would just make your potential audience smaller.
>>8068086contIf I ever get anywhere with my own indie comic, I want to group together with some other people in the same position as me, and form a little pseudo publisher, a circle of people making the same kinds of comics, if you like one, you'll probably like the others.I've been in a few indie comic circles before, but they're just not making the kinds of comics I'm talking about.I see alot of porn, alot of political comic stips, alot of weird esoteric stuff, or something autobiographical thing about their parents divorcing or something. It's just not what I really care about.I like some more niche manga... but I only read them after I had already read things like Naruto and Deathnote, and if those bigger titles didn't exist, I probably would never have bothered with the medium at all.I want to find or make an indie comic scene where the people in it are making comics that would be publishable in Weekly Shonen Jump and adjacent magazines. I don't mean in terms of the workload and publishing schedule, I mean just the comic itself. That kind of comic.
>>8068087The terminology is difficult, because manga means made in JapanBut I really don't give a shit about whether it's made in Japan or not. It's the thing itself that is good. If Naruto or whatever was made in the west, but it was exactly the same story, art, everything, it would make no difference. When I say "I like manga not comics" I'm talking about the content itself, not its origin. I would very much like if comics were the same as manga, to the point where drawing a distinction would be meaningless, beucase both would be worth reading.
>>8067904Congrats man. You've been drawing this one for a while, right? I don't remember when you started but it's been at least a year. Good job on continuing to chip away at it this whole time.
>>8067914>Yeah, do they look for fresh artists or do they want to see you having followers already?Japanese publishers don't care about your existing following. It's nice to have but they're not going to reject anybody on grounds of not having enough pre-existing followers. Lots of popular authors have no online presence to speak of.I wouldn't submit to a publisher unless you're willing to work with a publisher though. Just release it online and keep making more.>>8067924>Why hasn't anyone in the west been able to make something on par with manga? What does this even mean? Watchmen. Batman. Superman. Spiderman. Tintin. Asterix. Moebius's works. And so on. All monumentally successful works. "on par" by what metric? Just how much YOU personally like them? Why are you asking us?
>>8068089If Chansaw Man (which is already more westernized than most other manga) was drawn and published in America but otherwise would look the same, it would be less popular. If it would be the same story, paneling, but drawn like a typical western comic, it would be significantly less popular.
>>8067979>the truth is that many people here don't seem to take it seriously, and like it really is: A job. You have to actually put the effort and work into it, a lot of time, and kind of be multi-faceted making lots of different things. If you treat it like a job you get 3 books in 3 years. You're vastly underestimating the AMOUNT of work and effort required for the crazy release schedules of manga. It's not a job, it's the one and only thing you do. If you want to have a life outside of manga you need to hire a team.
>>8068093Same would be true if it had been published by anything but jumpIf jagaan was somehow in jump it would have been chainsawman before chainsawman
>>8068092>Just release it online and keep making more.Releasing online is a no brainer, otherwise it will just sit on my hard drive.I think i will submit something to the big Japanese publishers, Mix Green and so on, just to get the feeling of it.But otherwise the most realistic possibility for me is to try to land a one shot in the eu-mag i posted above.
>>8068092There's a big discrepancy between the works on the left here, and the works on the right. Both in content and audience.Yeah it's what I personally like, but it's also what hundreds of millions of people also like, and that's the audience I'm talking about. And that audience, of which I am a part of it, really likes the stuff on the left, and doesn't give a shit about the stuff on the right. And what I'm asking for, is why can't we just make stuff like on the left?Like it doesn't even exist in the west, there's not a single example that you can point to, of a comic that even remotely appeals to the same audience that likes the stuff on the left. Not one.
>>8068097>Same would be true if it had been published by anything but jumpNo, not necessary. I mean they did the safe edgy trick and published a seinen-leight title in a shonen mag, sure. It would be still more popular as if Fujimoto would have went to Image Comics or Dark Horse.>If jagaan was somehow in jump it would have been chainsawman before chainsawmanYou're joking, aren't you? It looks like shit and the story is stupid. It has zero mainstream appeal as well. It's not even close.
>>8068100>There's a big discrepancy between the works on the left here, and the works on the right.
>>8067924>Why hasn't anyone in the west been able to make something on par with manga?Something as commercially huge as mangas? That's a big subject. Something as culturally "unique"? You just have to look harder. The comics industry doesn't stop at Capeshit for Americans and Astérix for Frenchies. There is a lot more to panels on pages than those two extremes but, just like DC/Marvel, it's all about money. There are a lot of fucking industries that will finance animes at a loss to sell plastic for money. Those industries have all the incentives in the world to make it so it is internationally recognized and loved. More fans=More sales. That's all there is to it.
>>8068100>there's not a single example that you can point to, of a comic that even remotely appeals to the same audience that likes the stuff on the left. Not one.JoJo exists, bro.

>>8068098>I think i will submit something to the big Japanese publishers, Mix Green and so on, just to get the feeling of it.That's a good mindset to have. Worst you can get is a "no thanks", which is really no problem.>>8068100>there's a big discrepency between [manga I cherrypicked for my argument] and the works on the rightYes, no shit. Now compare Tintin to Shin-chan, Asterix to Astro Boy, Moebius' works to Nausicaa (which was directly inspired by Moebius btw). Cape comics are just shounen manga. No, not in the sense of being a genre like people often (erroneously) think, but in the sense of being comics aimed at boys. No, I don't mean the modern zombiefied cape comics, I mean the golden years.>here's not a single example that you can point to, of a comic that even remotely appeals to the same audience that likes the stuff on the left. Not oneYou're right. American and European authors aren't aiming for a japanese audience very often. Well observed!
>>8068108You described 99,9% of non-Japanese mangaka right there.
>>8068112>You're right. American and European authors aren't aiming for a japanese audience very often. Well observed! Not him. But the Japanese do not as well, or they haven't for the longest time, i think now they try to with the online stuff. So they never tried and still outperformed the westerners on their own play field. Isn't that odd?
>>8068118>But the Japanese do not as well, or they haven't for the longest time, i think now they try to with the online stuff. You think japanese authors aren't aiming for a japanese audience? Are you for real?>So they never tried and still outperformed the westerners on their own play field. Isn't that odd? What a weird thing to say. I listed a bunch of old comics that very much performed exceedingly well as comics. Manga is eating comic's market in the modern day largely because comics STOPPED (was, now isn't) trying to appeal to its primary audience. And btw it wasn't "without trying". There was a quite a large push to bring manga overseas, actually.
I'm putting together a list of all the types of western comics. Have I missed anything?

>>8068123>You think japanese authors aren't aiming for a japanese audience?I mean they don't try to do the same thing, as trying to appeal to the audience from the west incited of the home audience.
>>8068125Netflix bait
>>8068123and this manga which is aimed at a Japanese audience manages to appeal to vastly more people in the west than the western works aimed a western audience does
>>8068100>doesn't give a shit about the stuff on the right.Moebius was amazing. He definitely could draw exceptionally well. I just never cared much about such 80s sci-fi
>>8068101>It looks like shit and the story is stupid.
>>8068100The reason is because int he west, you can't release a comic thats in black and white without people thinking its poorly drawn. Coloring is seen as a requirement which probably triples the time and cost of making a comic. The best comics are drawn and written by the same person and proably colored by someone else. But when you have an assembly line of wagies being contracted to write, draw, and color the comic, you get crap. Its all up to corporations to actually PUBLISH single serialized stories made by one guy and LET them gain traction and get people used to seeing original stories on the shelves. But they don't want to do that. Comics were literally kneecapped and killed in the west and it was intentional. This isn't some mysterious thing we have to get to the bottom of. Corporations and government worked together to ensure you can't just make a good ass comic and publish it.
>>8068132Yeah but have you actually read his comic? Can you tell me what the plot is? Can you name a single character? Have you ever seen anyone who cares about Moebius in the same way that people like mainstream anime? Have you ever seen someone cosplay as a Moebius character at a convention?I admit it's an influential work... but that's kind of all it is. Outside of that, nobody gives a shit about Moebius. My metric for how actually culturally relevant something is, is by how many people use it as their discord profile pic. People choose things they like for their profile pics. I've never seen a Moebius profile pic
>>8068135You know the fags in this thread love dying for Epstein, pls stop hurting them feelings, commie.
>>8068136>My metric for how actually culturally relevant something is, is by how many people use it as their discord profile picThe essay guy is on a generational aura loss strike...
>>8068142It's a humorous example, but it's basically like saying>"how often do you actually think about x?"Can you really say you care about something if you never think about it?You probably only think of Moebius when looking for examples of "good comics"But what about when you want to actually read a comic? Or better yet, when you want to spend an evening doing something you enjoy? Or when you want to share something you like with a friend.Moebius is just simply not meaningful to anyone, and certainly not anyone who's not an artist. As cool as it is.
>>8068145>You probably only think of Moebius when looking for examples of "good comics"thats the difference with manga and comics im my opinion. There are plenty of mid manga that are still good and people have read, but in the west theres only viral top tier comics, and hilariously so bad its good comics. Anyone who brings up some great comic from 30 years ago is already wrong on principle.
You guys do things you enjoy?I can't wait to fulfill whatever I am supposed to fulfill and then die
>>8068164Sort of. Most of the time I have to draw boring shit for my story but sometimes I draw stuff I like.
>>8067924>I'm just not seeing the obstacle here. Anyone could have drawn pic related, or any other super successful manga. So why haven't you? There's your answer.
>>8068211I don't know, I'm trying.I draw lines, but they don't look good. I've been doing this for a while now, longer than some manga artists have been drawing. I want to be able to draw this good but I don't know what I'm missing in my approach
>>8068171Oh, I don't even draw
>>8068217Fuckin‘ besado!
>>8068214Post your work, describe your work flow. And i swear to god, if you use a tablet or shit like that, i‘ll be mad.
>>8067930You know that the main problem is the rotten comic industry. But also in the west you don't get to choose an alternative lifestyle, you are forced into a tiny 9-5 box, this is because rent prices are insane and thats because of immigrants, open borders.
>>8068237The fish is rotting from it’s head, mutt.
>>8067933Actually the NBA and NFL are part of a subset of sports where the demand for height and mass will never go down, contact team sports. These also happen to be really popular youth sports so they have a huge culture and a lot of money flowing through.Bottom line is that these athletes wouldnt necessarily succeed in other team sports like baseball, soccer, volleyball. The NBA and NFL have the best of the athletic large (6'5+) athletes with a gas tank, soccer has the best of the 5'10-6'3 athletes with insane soccer skills, and gas tank. When you turn on the television you are getting the best of the best, not some second rate chumps who wouldny cut it in a "better" sport, team sports as a global cultural phenomenon have been evolving for almost a 100 years at this point.
>>8068248Not that anon, but that what i was talking about. For the Japanese talent manga is one top fields and for westerners it's an obscure, little niche. It would be like if you're born in America, 2.15m tall and perfectly athletic but instead of going to NBA, WWE, UFC, NFL, Hollywood... you would go to Mongolia and participate in their national sport that requires being tall. Not that extreme, bot something like that.
>>8067924everyone replying to this with endless no-draw cope.devils candy and dog ningen are on store shelves. you can be published, you just have to actually try. throw this fucking threat away holy shit.
Is there a video tutorial that shows the process of manga making from zero to the finished, digitalized version. I'm talking about trad. I need the whole pipeline in detail, how to make thumbnails, how to draw the manuscript, inking, scanning, applying screen tones and text...Like the whole thing, of course by a professional Japanese mangaka, not a youtuber.
>>8067978You know damn well how to read file names you cunt
>>8068031Just use white gel pens. I would recommend standard white out but depending on what your brand you go for results may vary cause I know for a fact my dollar store ones ended up sucking ass cause the white out would peel off easily(no cracking at least so it served well in the moment if I was careful) but gel pens have always worked well for me for small corrections.Gotta let the liquid pile up though a little bit cause a thin application with either tool can result in just re-activating the ink and getting grey smears resulting in your scanner just picking up a bunch of crap. Granted, CSP has a dust filter tool for that but if you can save yourself the trouble by just being careful I'd go for that
>>8068078Im sure based on your description this is just a throwaway page, but I recommend in future scenarios where you have a similar scenario in those top two panels there it be better if you just made the "huh" reaction panel just a headshot of the guy turning around and reacting. Just a close up of his head turning to the guy requires less effort and gets the reaction across better, and it avoids using the exact same composition just flipped so it looks less lazy
>>8068341I've a tipex pen and it's a pile of dung. I don't have a gel pen right now, will see what i can buy, thx.
>>8068345I use liquidraw gel pens if that helps your search

What i really don't get, is how clean the text is at such early stage. The drawing is just scribbles but the text looks finished. How big are this nemus? How can their hand writing look like printed text? My cursive handwriting looks nothing like comic sans. Do i have to learn writing in comic sans?
Oh what's that, kid? You think... You got the hang of it? He he he he he... Then let's see you draw a... SMALL CLUTTERED PANEL WITH BACKGROUND AHAHAHAHHA. Man, manga making sure is hard.
>>8068358Yes anon, you do need to learn to write in the font that you plan to use which will end up being typed digitally anyway. Go waste a couple of years doing that :)
>>8068149>Anyone who brings up some great comic from 30 years ago is already wrong on principleBecause it defeats your entire worldview, gaylord
>>8068362You are giving me mixed signals, autist-anon.
>>8068361Im not sure how much of that is necessary anon. Like once you reach the stage of an entire guy getting cropped by your speech bubble you gotta just cut that shit off. Hell just make the speech bubble slightly larger and you have a good enough reason to just axe the background entirely and just stick to the foreground elements. Im not sure if you plan on adding screen tones but you could just as easily fill in the background with some gradient for interest.Like recently with the pages that I uploaded I had a close friend that went "wow dude this is the most effort you ever put in your background" when it was quite literally the least amount of effort I ever put in my backgrounds(minus when I just leave that shit white) cause it was just screentones in a crudely drawn stadium. This is all to say that depending on how hard you went on your backgrounds in the previous panels, you can afford to axe em in these smaller panels.
>>8068125The autobiographical indie
>>8068125DECONSTRUCTION
>>8068367I used to be too lazy towards background in my earlier pages, so I'm trying to put more effort into it. I know I might be pushing a little too far, but I don't know how much is too much until I see it ready. It will take some more practice for me to figure out a good middle ground.
>>8068371For backgrounds i would definitely recommend to study western artists. Japanese do the brut force approach, it ugly and unnecessary long. God for keeping your assistant slaves busy, but not if you have to do it yourself.
>>806836430 years ago might as well be another planet. Everything is fucked today.

I completely forgot, that i still have the Hiroshi Fukuda - Drawing Dramatic Action Comics to Captivate ReadersUnfortunately he is a digi-fag and i will have to read subtitles. So i will have to adapt it to my trad pipeline. But by skipping through it, he is talking a lot about nemu, for example, should be very usefull.
>>8068136>My metric for how actually culturally relevant something is, is by how many people use it as their discord profile picTranny cord is irrelevant
>>8068136>Yeah but have you actually read his comic? Can you tell me what the plot is?I altready could read Akira when I discovered Moebius so I just chose Akira instead. Akira was heavily inspired by Moebius tho.Moebius already was kind of outdated for me when I got into comics.
I think if you're going to compare yourself to manga, you should be looking at the stuff serialized on mangaplus or stuff that's highly ranked on jump rookie. that level seems more attainable and earthly.
>>8068031>after drawing over my lines had craquelure on them, like pic related. The fuck gone wrong?gouache cracks if you go too thick or you don't use the right consistency

>>8068127>>8068130What has happened is the european/american/etc comics that used to appeal to boys stopped getting made. Most of the audience those comics would have captured simply stopped reading comics altogether, and the remainder found comics made by other cultures (japan, korea) as a substitute. It is accurate to say you won't find western comics like a WSJ manga, because WSJ is aimed at japanese boys, not a western audience of boys and not a global audience of boys (despite whatever retards claim in protest to newer manga they haven't realized they've outgrown yet).>>8068130>this manga which is aimed at a Japanese audience manages to appeal to vastly more people in the west than the western works aimed a western audience doesYeah, NOW. NEW western comics don't appeal. Spiderman was incredibly appealing, even to a japanese audience. You're keen to ignore what I'm actually saying just to hammer in the same tired "comics..... bad" point. The man asked for examples of western comics that are "on par" with manga, and that's what I listed.
>>8068214So post some work. We are on /ic/ - artwork critique. Let's critique some artwork.
>>8068358That doesn't look like printed text at all.The scribbles can be fast but the editor they're showing the name to has to be able to read the text. >>8068497Its the same size and style as the final text.
>>8068498Mind posting the final text then? Because I'd be surprised if that was truly the case. The author isn't even the one doing the final text unless they're self-publishing, that's an editor's job.
It's impossible to make manga. It cannot be done. You must give up.

>>8068058>>8068016I hope he adds rape scenes.I love rape scenes in non-hentai manga.
>>8067930>I've seen all their tricks but I'm still not getting it. What is the issue?Learn Japanese so you can actually read the media in its pure form. It's going to modify your mind to be impervious to every single mental obstacle if you can read and understand why their media is objectively the best. It's subtle, but I can detect from your posts that you still have some level of latent anti-anime psyop programming active in you, as does almost everyone in the west. To actually be on par with Japanese media both in terms of art and storytelling skill all of this stuff has to go.And to answer your question>Why hasn't anyone in the west been able to make something on par with manga? It's because most just can't do what I've outlined above and their engagement with the media is mostly ironic, so they can't see the actual and unmatched technical achievements of the art and storytelling of the best JP media.
>>8068518This? This text that is very obviously typed in and not handwritten at all like in the previous image you posted? It's typed text. How does it look like printed text? Because it's typed, same as the printed text was typed. I also type out my dialog before drawing the storyboard. I'll change things as I go.

>>8068584There isn't anything impossible about learning Japanese and not being ironic about your love for Japanese media. All the ways irony is ingrained in the western mindset is the major thing blocking westerners from making things on par with manga and I sadly don't know the cure besides just choosing to become more based and learning Japanese.

>>8068627>but that's still relatively rare in the westNo, it's not. Man you're sounded pretty irony poisoned yourself. Hypocrite.
>>8068628Ironic engagement with media isn't the same thing as being jaded about certain fans of the media.Even so, I do believe the west can be more based given the right conditions, but it's still objectively a rare thing to find someone fully unaffected by western irony who doesn't know japanese.
I think you can make something good, if you simply go at it with 100% earnest, no irony, no half-hearted attempt. No being ashamed of the tropes or genre you like, just stone cold 100% unapologetic "this is what I wanna do and I'm doing it". This is a huge part of japanese media when it comes to shows or manga, in the west there's too much hiding behind irony or 'meta' shit as if ashamed of their own love of their work

>>8068637i think some of you guys have developed this quite bizarre idea of japan, japanese cartoons and japanese people built entirely upon your inability to conceptualize that your struggle to draw anime girls is simply because you are lacking in foundational skills (ie; you are not trying hard enough) and rather than addressing that you'd rather built a very extensive cope about there being an immeasurable inherent difference deep down between japan and the rest of the world which explains why you can't get the spacing of the eyes right and that can only be fixed by spending years going off the branches and doing random weeb bullshit to be more "japanese" (of course, always informed by an idea of japan built around the japanese media imported to the west in the first place)i think the reason a lot of people's first attempt at a manga sucks is not because western brain programming irony low cognitive resolution etc etc but because they've only made 10 pages of middling quality with no real plan behind them while every mangaka has probably already drawn 1000 pages that don't even see the light of day before they get a chance for a one shot
>>8068710I can draw it though and have looked at a lot of westerners who explain how they think and I like dissecting how/why exactly they fail at it. If you can actually draw anime everything I'm saying isn't controversial, it's only controversial here because the west is still lagging behind.>inherent difference deep down between JapanIt's not about some inherent difference, but the techniques used that do not show up randomly anywhere outside of Japan if the artist isn't consciously trying to make anime art like it's made in Japan. Again if you can draw it this should be clear, even if you can't draw it and just have enough sense/taste for the media this should be clear.
I can't draw and I'm still making an amazing manga.

Guys, i‘m looking for a proper tutorial on manga paneling.I have some experience with movie and illustration composition bit i habe a hatd time to understand what size or side ratio to choose and how to combine the size of the panel with the zoom of the shot.
>>8068730I haven't really ever seen any tutorials about panelling beyond>draw the eye through the pagewhich is pretty basic.I've come up with some ideas about panelling myself based on what I've seen. These are just my own theories but I hope they're insightfulThere's a specific intended size that your work should be looked at. This is up to you to decide. Pic related assumes a size of a typical tankobon, printed, held at half arms length, viewed by a person with average eyesight. At this scale, your work should be easily readable, and this dictates your panelling, specifically the size of your panels. On the left is a western comic forcefully shrunk to fit the tankobon size, it wasn't designed to be this small, it's hard to read, the panels are too small.Similar to the panel size is the size of the content within the panels and how its drawn. Focus on the scale in accordance with its readability. Determine how long it should take for some to comprehend what they're looking at and draw to meet that goal.Routinely look at your page at this distance, and maybe even do things like, try to imagine yourself as a reader, look at it for like half a second, and see what you understood.
>>8068736You can also just make this easy for yourself and select the industry standard page size and continually learn to draw on that in such a way that it's readable lol.
>>8068727I didnt even mention ai shut up
>>8068736This next technique is much more my own idea and I've absolutely never seen anyone mention anything like it before, so I can't be sure if it's good advice or not, but feel free to judge for yourselfWe view nature with our eyes, this is how he envision the world. This image takes the form of a circle or oval, our field of view. For ease of drawing, this is easily converted into a square or rectangle without much loss of effect.By placing multiple of these images in a row we can create a movie strip, or in our case, a comic book.In the interest of dynamism, some of these panels serve different functions. Some are more zoomed in, some are longer paced, some are shorter paced, etc. So we can pick apart, twist and distort our vision to make more dynamic panelling shapes. In general, bigger panels are more impactful and longer paced than smaller panels(though this is an oversimplification). One aspect of panelling is that, even though we envision a whole scene as an landscape oval or rectangle (because that's how we envision the world), our focus is actually much more focussed. We pay attention to only the apple on a table, and not the rest of the table. In panelling what this means is that you can chop off the sides of the "default panel", getting rid of the excess. Here I have used an example of exactly that kind of panel in Naruto. The panel with the table filled with headbands, we are interested in the headbands and not the full table. Even though to Naruto's eyes, he can see the full table (and even our imagination acknowledges the full table), we do not care to see it, so it's chopped off (it also makes the panelling of the panel faster because it's a smaller panel)
>>8068730>2030-4>still care about panelingROFLMAOthis is why manga can't ever be as popular as webtoongo to any manga website and the most popular works are all webtoon
>>8068745And before I get crucified for neglecting another important point to the shapes of panels, I'll address it nowA common use of long vertical panels is to suggest a sort of vertical panning of the camera, which I believe the panel in the bottom left of pic related intends to depict. However, the panel on the bottom right is also a vertical panel, though it obviously conveys no such vertical movement. What it is instead is a panel more akin to the apple of the table, or the Naruto headbands on the table. The rest of the environment is there, but it is not important for us to see, our vision is focussed soley on the characters. But because the panel is important, to make it more impactful and longer paced, the whole panelling is enlarged to take up (horizontally) 2/3rds of the page. And it neatly fits in to the right of the other panel. An effective use of space through clever panelling. As a side note, the top panel is also somewhat like this, though it is cropped to be horizontal instead of vertical. We can imagine the rest of the body, but to make it more impactful, the panel is cropped. Otherwise it would take up 2/3rds of the page.
>>8068736>>8068745>>8068747I'm curious have you actually drawn a single line of your own work
>>8068747With this technique, you can construct almost any page imaginable, and have each panel be the right size and serve the right function.Pic related is a page of 5 panels, it's easy to imagine them all as landscape ovals or rectangles as our eyes envision the world. The first 4 panels get incrementally smaller, suggesting an increasing pacing, the action is getting more intense, and then ending with the 5th panel which is the largest, indicating that this is the end of the fast paced flurry attacks, and also a more impactful moment in the action. The crop and zoom of the panels is chosen to highlight what is most important, in the top 2, the character is the focus, in the middle 2, the flurry of attacks is the focus and the character is more zoomed out.Another common technique on shoe here is that the panels are diagonal in shape, this really just makes the action feel more dynamic, but they are still basically just rectangles. And I suppose, if you haven't already noticed it by now, another common technique is that the horizontal gutters are wide than the vertical gutters, this just makes it easier to tell that you're supposed to read it row by row instead of column by column. You should always do this, it's good form
>>8068752I won't bother spelling out the panelling of this page, by now you should be able to see the theory in action for yourself.Do you agree with it? Is there any other possible way that this page could have been constructed? If you disagree with my theory, please do not hesitate to point out its flaws, but as far as I can see, this pretty effectively demystifies panelling and furthermore makes it possible to approach it in a steady and controlled way that doesn't require the artist to figuratively juggle 10 flaming bowling pins
>>8068745>>8068747>>8068752>>8068754Man you've been at this for years. Please. I'm begging you here. Please please please!!!!! Post a comic YOU have drawn.
>>8068750>>8068757I'm sorry, art is a fickle community that relies on appeal to authority, even though the vast majority of good artists operate purely on an intuitive approach and do not understand their own work enough to teach others. Putting my name on these rants now would be self-defeatingOnce I'm far enough in my own work, I'm planning to make a book or youtube channel or something to present these ideas from a position of authority and hopefully contribute positively to the tutorial scene of the medium. These thread posts partly serve as a way for me to explore and refine my ideas into a more succinct and comprehensive form, as well as to get feedback on them. But any idea can really stand on its own merits, it doesn't matter who says it. I could be Hirohiko Araki or Barrack Obama for all you know. Judge the idea by itself, are you not intelligent enough to assess ideas themselves presented plainly?
>>8068761I'm not reading another word until I see some work. There isn't a single reason provided to pay even a shred more attention than I've already provided to somebody who cannot back up their own "teachings" with real practical application. If you will one day put up, great, but until that day, shut up.
>>8068761*rapes you*
>>8068761Fuck off nigger you don't even draw here.
I don't understand paneling. It seems random to me. I'm a nodraw perma beg though. Paneling is what I hate most.
>>8068767Yeah same I don't draw
>>8068767It IS random. It's just whatever the hell you want. There aren't any rules.
>>8068776There has to be some rules. Each time I searched for them I only got "every mangaka is different" and "copy manga you like!" but that doesn't help. One thing that really bothers me is these "slopes" they don't look bad, but I can't understand how the mangaka artist knows when to use them. It's the same with very small panels. In my head, I'm just viewing the manga I want to make as if I were there in the world, but those small panels break that illusion and become another "when the fuck do I use this!?!" thing.
>>8068627>How do you know I haven't?Because you haven't posted a single thing to back your bullshit up. Where IS your accurate, authentic, successful manga? You're sitting here telling all of us the formula for it, so why haven't you made it?
>>8068781He shouldn't be a mangaka honestly. He seems like he should try to be an editor.
>>8068779how about because it looks cool
>>8068783An editor has real, concrete, tangible insight from years of experience with the industry first-hand (not as a consumer). This guy hasn't even shown that. On top of that his words smell like bullshit on the face of it, so it doesn't even pass the "yeah that sounds like it's probably right" test
>>8068779They look good because they still line up. Okay, if there is one rule to follow, that's it. But you won't become good at paneling by hunting down rules to follow.>I can't understand how the mangaka artist knows when to use themNeither does the author. He just felt like doing them, so he did them.>those small panels break that illusion and become another "when the fuck do I use this!?!" thing. You use them when you feel like one is called for. That's it.Some authors feel they're called for more often than other authors. Some authors feel like paneling with a bunch of atypical oblong shapes. Do what YOU feel the work calls for.
>>8068791If I do what I feel like, I'll just end up making something ugly and hard to read like ugly western comics and the book club guy here will post my pages mocking them.
>>8068799Thats gonna happen no matter what because you suck
>>8068799>denying yourself valuable crit because you care this deeply what some faggots on the internet might say *rapes you too but only gently enough to get the point across*
>>8068799So did every pro for many years. That page you post is like 20 years of drawing manga for Araki. Maybe more.
>>8068804Why even bother if I suck?>>8068805That latinx guy's critcism isn't even worth anything. I have no way of knowing if he actually knows what he is talking about or if it's just fun for him to criticize instead of making.
>>8068746Good, but why haven't you killed yourself Pajeet?
>>8068799for the record, I don't bash people making an earnest attempt to be better
>>8068745Thx, that-s actually interesting.I have a "movie background" as i was a movie nerd for many, many years. I wanted to shoot a film, read some theory, bought a camera, played around with photography for a while...So when i think about paneling i think about how it would look in a movie first.Often you have situations like pic related in movies. In a way it's very similar to your idea. In a comic you would change the ratio of the scene to have a focus on the women. In movies they very little information around the subject, to hove it in focus.
>>8068776>>8068767Good paneling is not random at all. There are composition rules to them. If you understand the rules then you kow what to do and paneling becomes easy.I could explain it to you but why would I? I get nothing from it.
>>8068823There are some movies that play arround with aspect ratios, it's more of a gimmick opf course, but maybe one could learn something from it for comics, as the ratio in comics changes all the time naturally.https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Zx4t4O-j93E
I might just be cynical about my work this morning but I feel like this family drama pizza party bullshit is gonna bore people. even if the scene is only 1/3 of the chapter. I might rewrite the rest of this scene.
>>8068779>One thing that really bothers me is these "slopes" they don't look bad, but I can't understand how the mangaka artist knows when to use themYou mean diagonal panel framing? They get used to express motion. Another thing you could do (but which is mor euncommon) is to make wobbly panel frames. They can get used to express psychedelic scenes.Or you can make the background behind the panels black. That is used to express that a scene is a flashback. It's just common symbolism in manga you learn by reading manga.
>>8068824You don't need to understand any rules to make good paneling.
>>8068827No, he means the angled panels in the image he posted which have nothing at all to do with motion or even anything inside them as Araki used that paneling for everything and anything throughout parts 3 through 5 of JJBA.
>>8068828Wrong. There are rules to paneling just like there are rules to composition. It's not very complicated but if you don't know what you are doing then the paneling will look off.
>>8068832And yet I just do whatever and I get praise for my paneling. It isn't how you think it is.
>>8068830Those angled panels are diagonal panels. And there obviously is motion going on on the page post. It's a car scene so he uses motion panels.
>>8068833Getting praise means nothing. Most people are retards and have no clue what they are talking about.
>>8068835>And there obviously is motion going on on the page post.Sure, but like I said, Araki used panels like that for everything. You're attributing it to motion only because you haven't read the work and don't understand the context (or haven't read it lately). It has nothing to do with action, he just draws his whole manga in wacky angled panels like this because it's the mood he wanted and that's it.
>>8068837Okay but it was my editor who said it.
>>8068839Doesn't change that its commonly used for motion.I guess you could also word it differently and say it's used to express chaos. Using chaotic paneling doesn't require motion in the scene but it's usually when they get used.
>>8068840Your editor can go fuck himself you snob.
>>8068841>Doesn't change that its commonly used for motion. He asked what the author was thinking and you're coming up with some unrelated crap because you heard somewhere angled panels something something action. Stfu.>>8068842>you need to know all the rules>um no you don't>SHUT UP SNOBYou also stfu.
>>8068843You obviously have no clue about manga and just get angry when people tell you how it is. You sound like a leftist who doesn't want to accept that there are rules in art. For you any retard can make art because otherwise you have no chance to ever succeed since you are obviously retarded yourself
>>8068844I've drawn around 1300 pages of manga. You are projecting some unrelated bullshit on me just because I happen to disagree with you. If this is a habit of yours, grow out of it.
>>8068846And I bet those 1300 pages look like dogshit. You are obviously so far up your own ass that you get offended if someone disagrees with you.
>>8068847Lol, if one of us here is offended are you sure it's me?

>>8068852Detecting a hint of insecurity.
>>8068854Thinking that popularity = quality is a sign of a retard. You are just using logical fallacies the whole time to act all important without actually having any argument.
>>8068857Popularity? What is this nonsequitur?>You are just using logical fallacies the whole time to act all important without actually having any argument.I said you don't need to know any rules to make good paneling. You said nuh-uh. I said I get praised for my paneling by my editor despite just doing whatever. That's my argument. If an editor doesn't know good paneling when he sees it then who does? That's not a fallacy.
>>8068863>Popularity? What is this nonsequitur? You are talking about personal anecdotes of getting praise for your paneling. That obviously means you think popularity = quality. You are a narcissist who just twists things however you want so there obviously is no reason talking to you.
>>8068846>1300 pages of manga6 1/2 volumes, so around 1 1/2 years?Those are rookie numbers.
Also using Araki as an example again since he was brought up here... He even described himself that there are rules to paneling in his book. So thinking it's just random is completely retarded.
>>8068866Lol wtf kind of logic is this? I specifically mentioned my editor's praise as it is the one source of praise I don't have any real caveats or misgivings about trusting beyond "maybe he's just being polite". I never said anything at all about popularity nor do I believe that. If I can't trust an actual honest-to-god professional manga editor with decades of experience's opinion on the matter of paneling then I certainly am not trusting you, lmao. You are projecting a weaker argument onto my posts. This is commonly called making a "strawman" argument which is a well known fallacy. Instead of attacking my point, you just attack a much less defensible position and pretend that's what I'm saying. Is this going to upset you even further to read? I guess we'll find out!>>8068867Over the course of 12 years, with multiple years not spent drawing. Never said I made 'em quickly!
>>8068868>He even described himself that there are rules to paneling in his book. So thinking it's just random is completely retarded.Well, what are they then? I'd love to hear his explanation for why he chose to draw all of parts 3, 4 and 5 in this strange oblongs instead of more regular panels.
>>8068870>I specifically mentioned my editor's praiseFirst you didn't mention anythign about an editor. You just mentioned you get praise. And even if it was an editor... who cares? Popularity = quality is literally how most editors think because their job is to make money with your product. Editors usually don't give a shit about art. They just work for a company and want to generate profit. They are not artists. If you worked for the editor of Dragonball then every manga you made would look like Dragonball. It has nothing to do with quality.
>>8068870nta but first of all your editor should be able to tell good panelling from bad panelling. You may not know what you're doing, but it is your editors business to know.Furthermore, him praising you should mean he thinks your work is good in the exclusive context that it will be a successful manga, ie that it will make money, ie that it will be popular. If your editor is doing neither of these things, then he is a bad editor.
>>8068871I'm not here to spoonfeed you. Read the book yourself. My guess in this context is that he just uses weird paneling because Araki has a quirky style in general. One of his rules about paneling is variety. So maybe he just does it for variety and weirdness. This doesn't mean that paneling can be totally random tho.
>>8068875>First you didn't mention anythign about an editor. You just mentioned you get praise.I didn't even want to mention receiving praise, lol. You think I come here to brag about shit? I had point to make, you continued moving the goalposts so I continued chasing after them.>And even if it was an editor... who cares?I just said who and why. If you don't care, well, that's on you. I do, so I mentioned it.>If you worked for the editor of Dragonball then every manga you made would look like Dragonball. What in the fuck?>>8068877>You may not know what you're doing, but it is your editors business to know.I know what I'm doing. What I'm doing is whatever I feel like. I'm not consulting some rulebook. Do not confuse what I'm saying. And yes, of course I know all this. What makes this separate from the discussion at hand? Good paneling is paneling that helps convey your intention, lets the story flow and keeps the reader engaged. This is congruent with what an editor's goal is. If the paneling sucks then that will hurt the potential for success so it's in the editor's interest to filter for quality paneling.>>8068883>there are definitely rules but I'm not going to tell you also the guy who tells me there's rules does wacky paneling because he's quirky and wants variety and weirdnessUh huh...Sounds like what I already said. You do what you feel the work needs. Whether it fits the "rules" or not.
>>8068889A big post to say>I just make marks on the page and they turn out fine, I don't know how I do it, I just do itWhat are you an amatuer? You've got deadlines to meet here, what are you gonna do when your luck runs out and you can't figure out a page? You've got no ground to stand on, you don't know what you're doing. It's not enough that you be able to make a good page, you need to be able to not make a bad page
>>8068687I'm working on stuff but I just dont feel like sharing until I'm done. Maybe because I dont want to think too hard about it and take advice since I'm just burnt out, so I'm just chilling for now.
There isn't a materials thread up so I'll ask here:What pen/tool can give some more dynamic linework while still allowing to draw on cheap 80g/sm print paper? I already draw with pencil and staedtler fineliners (pic related some copy of hells paradise, just to show I'm not a howie) and I know you can add lineweight of course but I want something that's like a traditional G-pen but cheaper because I'm very broke atm and cant afford the thicker paper required for an actual G-pen.
>>8068928Most brush pens should work okey on cheap paper.
Do i have 'tism?I always need the perfect set up to be able to focus. For example if i draw on paper with a pencil i can lock in and do it for hours. I try to draw on pc and everything feels off, i have to force myself and i end up ditching the whole thing after a short while. There shouldn't be a lot of difference, but for my brain it feels like two completely different task, one of which is shit and the other is fun.
>>8068985not at all, getting used to digital or any new tool just takes a while. There will be (a lot of) friction when starting with a new tool, so it's normal to have less fun in the beginning if you're just focussed on just doing what you always do because it won't go as smoothly. I think everyone has this experience when starting with a new tool.>>8068945Thanks, I'll definitely look into those
>>8068767>>8068779>>8068824Too many posts to reply to but you're over thinking it. ""Good"" Paneling is subjective but ultimately there are very easy ""Rules"" to follow, I use to term rule loosely btw.1. Can you fit your pretty drawing in it2. Can you fit your pretty drawing and also get the story across in a legible way3. Does your panel's pass the test of your eyes falling into the natural flow.Congrats you did it. Now for 'shapes' and such that all depends entirely on your style, you don't necessarily NEED to force yourself to fall into predetermined shapes, but there is a general sort of nebulous arrangement that I 100% know you have in your mind when you're deciding on what your page is suppose to look like. You think "Okay this page, I want the characters to walk into a room, character B sees object on table, grabs it, reaction shot to character A as B calls out something they found" Once you sort of start theorizing what you 'want', and how it should 'look' a general your intuition should help you put it down, if you've read a lot. If your panels are coming out as just boring rectangles without anything terribly fancy you are missing something though. It should be dynamic and fun and not necessarily a spread sheet.
>>8069035this reads like AI, please respond with something convincing me that you are not a robot
>>8069042Well I fucked up my grammar right around "and how it should look, a general your intuition" because I've been up all night doodling lol so that should've been "In general your intuition" and I didn't use one of those "—" things so probably that. :)But I guess saying "just intuit" is probably wrong but I mean more so similarly to how you study art, or study cinematography so think how you want a 'shot' to look you use that general knowledge that you've accumulated from watching shit or reading shit you like. So you have an excuse to lay in bed reading manga saying "n-no actually I-I'm studying I swear!"
>>8068826If people care about the characters and are reading up to this point, they shouldn't have any qualms
>>8068826Do you write the dialog on the go or do you copy it from a script? Is struggle with that.
>>8068985Just start your drawing in trad and edit it digitally
>>8068985For me it's zoom and transform tool which makes digital so tedious. You are able to infinitely tweak your drawing so you end up cutting stuff and pasting it resizing it erasing it redrawing it etc etc.
Chainsaw Man's powers work so-so in the manga, nothing special. Gets boring quick, not a lot of variation and a permanent mask crests it's difficulties. But i therms of iconography, it's really good. Creates such a stark and memorable image, i'm fucking jelly.

I finally realised that the reason I always lose the will to draw when I wasn't busy full of stress is because this is a therapy all along. I cant do comics with low cortisol. Also redrawing some panels from chapter 3 because I rushed this chapter back in the day.

Toriyama literally started making manga to buy cigarettes. Isayama said he wanted to do it so he could feed himself.

>>8069074I don't script my comics, I write it in during storyboard. I tend to adjust dialogue up to when the page is done.
Even the modern manga uses hand drawn speech bubbles, you barely see vector bubbles, even on full dig manga, why is it this way, guys?
>>8069509Why not? The bubble is part of the drawing.
>>8069509soul
>>8069509I think it allows for more natural looking linesSome artists will draw their speedlines manually for the same reason
Has anyone actual experience with setting your manga in a real place? Your hometown or something? Has someone actually done that, what's the experience? Is it worth the hustle?I'm looking through Dandadan right now and i just don't see how it's possible to make such backgrounds without living there.
>>8069603I haven't, but I've thought about doing a story set in my home town. I don't know anyone, but just the locations I mean, and not make a big announcement of it, just have it be there, I think it would be neat
>>8069609I'm thinking about setting the story in a alternative version of Germany, ideally around the Imperial time.I have some older citys nearby, like Koblenz, with old buildings. I wonder how hart it is, to erase all the modern stuff from a photo a add horses and gaslight lamps.I mean it's more about the vibe, right.Where are you from? If you want say that? I think some countrys will work better than others. Germany is not that bad i think, some people like the German vibe.

>>8069614Zero. It does not look European. Red, blue, white tower. So probably 'merica? But it looks nice, could work for something romantic.
>>8068928By the way i was playing around with my gpen right now. Pic related is an ink that works pretty bad on good bristol or manga paper, it's too thin it seeps. But i was drawing on very cheap copy paper right now, and it looks quite good.So if you find the right ink, you can use a gpen on cheap paper .
>>8069653that is actually very interesting, thanks for sharing. I just wanna practice anyways, so it doesn't really matter if the ink itself is not ultra mega deep black and doesn't work perfectly when the page is scanned.

>>8069760I quoted my own message. >>8069619 this meant to go here >>8069616>>8069729Nope, i take it back, partially at least. I figured out that it works only on fresh paper. After a couple of passes with the eraser it starts bleeding. So it would only work if you use a light table.Unfortunately. I don't have a lot of money myself, right now. Could have been a good alternative for bristol paper, but i don't like using the light table.
>>8069287Weird. I'm actually thje opposite. I can only draw when well rested and if I have a full day to focus on it.
How do you get yourself fired up to work on your manga again?
>>8069822not sure if youre actually asking how to find motivation or if you're tacitly asking for approval to draw. You need to stop doing the latter if that's what this is
>>8069822I think of money and glory it will bring me.
While drawing this panel it suddenly hit me that goatee guy really is kinda hot and I'm not even gay...
>>8069822Didn't you read the thread? People here don't believe in motivation and say that if you aren't having a orgasm the moment your pencil/stylus touches paper/tablet you're NGMI.
>>8069887>People here don't believe in motivationAnd they are fucking RIGHT! I forced myself to draw like I always do after posting that and BANG! I'm on fire again.
>>8069653Cheap paper is too easy to damage with a nib. Least that was the main issue I was having, kept accidentally scraping or tearing the paper as I inked.

Why not?Is the mockumentary genre too farfetched? Could the story be better told if I just ditched the mockumentary aspect and made it like ordinary manga? Are there too many panels per page?Too much copy-pasted artwork? So many words? So many talking heads? Too much tell, not enough show?Do the dialogues read too preachy and cringe like posts from some edgy right-wing chuds on Xitter's rather than natural human dialogue? Is the plot twist too predictable? Or perhaps too asspull-ey?Too much build-up with too little reward? Are the antagonist and protagonist not engaging enough? Are the characters not relatable and sympathize-able enough? Are the political messages too "in-your-face"?Is the story too difficult to understand?Etc.Come at me with your harshest critiques.I want to improve.
>>8070077I think out of all the manga I've read on here this one has a problem that none of the other have had to this point and its all a matter of the way the text reads.Like regardless of page orientation and left to right reading vs. right to left the consistent rule between the two has always been progression starts from the top and ends towards the bottom, so the speech bubble at the highest point is first read and the bottom bubble is the last read. You are the first I've seen it where it does the complete opposite and I was completely lost on what the fuck Im supposed to be reading.
>>8070085>>8070077Like look at this fucking panel bro, what the fuck am I supposed to read first? I dont care how much of a fucking weeb you are you still read Japanese text from top to bottom.Like Im sure this wasnt the harsh critique you were expecting but its no wonder that you lost and it wasnt cause the quality of the drawings or the paneling and hell not even the quality of the writing, its just that you fucked up the format bro.
>>8070077Gave it a read.To start with, I don't think this kind of cold open works for what you're doing. We're jumping into some kind of roman senatorial debate without knowing who, what or why. It takes a moment to even understand that's what I'm reading because the artwork, while pretty, isn't clearly conveying the scene at all. Too many closeups and super-far-away shots, not enough in between. The environments feel too abstract to actually convey a sense of place and it doesn't do a good job describing the scene or of placing the characters in the scene throughout. The dialogue itself is hard to follow as we're kind of just cutting between characters with no real sense of spacial relation. To be honest, my eyes quickly glazed over trying in earnest to read the dialogue. I don't care about anything that they're talking about at all. I don't know the context here and this scenario has not presented me any reason to care. There's nobody for the reader to latch onto, everybody's either a mob character or an asshole/villain.I didn't like the way you had so many panels that were just two back-to-back closeups with some small change in expression between them. They could have just been one bigger panel and they would have flowed better that way. What you did felt like reading a VN flipping between character sprites. Not very visually compelling.Pic related I think exemplifies best the problems with the comic. Is something happening? I can't tell. What the hell is she talking about? I have no idea. Whatever idea you were trying to convey did not come across. So I think if I have one thing I think you need to work on above all else right now it's this: clarity. The reader needs to be able to follow what's happening, which requires much better clarity than what you have here.
>>8070086Like even in your less egregious examples like in this pic rel. Im boppin my head up and down in a way that no manga good or bad has ever done to me before. I thought I was goin crazy and pulled out my Witch Hat Atelier manga cause that shit also gets text heavy but the text flows like a regular book of up and down, and at its most text heaviest the bubbles are parallel.
I was watching manga content on tiktok to what the kids are doing. The art isn’t that bad actually. But what I’ve noticed, for some reasons this retards think they have to warm up the gnib with a lighter before drawing. Happens at the start of 80% of videos. Or do they think they have to use a brand new nib for every page?
>>8070092Okay now Im just fucking mad THIS IS A FUCKING LEFT TO RIGHT MANGA RIGHT? WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU NOW DISPLAYING THE TEXT AS IF ITS NOW RIGHT TO LEFT????
>>8070094anon it's right to left. >>8070092 doesn't make any sense read left-to-right.
>>8070077I like the art style, cool combination of western and manga. I will read the entire thing later. But the first 3 pages are awful to make someone continue reading. Page 1 is too crowded, it’s really hard to know what to read. The panels are very cryptic I don’t get who is speaking and to whom and why. Page 2 has no dialog, is completely semetrical and as confusing as the first.Page 3 is a little bit clearer but still some world building exposition…I don’t know what guidelines you were following but it has a very bad flow.I hope you are not a bitch and you will work on your shortcomings. Your mistakes are pretty basic, follow a proper manga guide and your story will become much better.I always sound like a hater, but i respect the effort, therefore I don’t feed you sweet lies.
>>8070096Ah fuck I was typing about it like I was talking to a person that was right across of me so I was thinking his right was my left, thats my badI still stand by my point though, the flow still got me fucked up
>>8070094Anyways let me correct my point I meant to say the reverse like what anon said >>8070096 but the flow would still have me reading "Show" first instead of "Soerda??" and that throws a viewer offAnd a weird quirk that I again have not seen in a manga is the insistence on putting the text at the bottom of the drawings like in pic related. Was it not possible in most of these scenarios to have the text at the top? It sounds like a nitpick but consider how every other fucking manga that was submitted is gonna follow the same format regardless of style or substance or whatever so this choic doesnt come off as "bold" it just seems wrong
>>8070103My final conclusion above all else is that what screwed you over above all else is legit just the way that you formatted the text. Its the literal equivalent of getting an F for not formatting an essay properly, which sounds gay as fuck Im aware but these standards go all the way back to fucking Peanuts comic strips. So imagine some editor judging this and from the first page goes "Wait where does this sentence end and a new one begins?"Like from little I did read it seemed fine and I aint saying you dont got talent, but you made such an obvious avoidable fuck up that I can not fucking ignore it.
Guys could you rate my paneling? For me it feels like i should decompress more.
>>8070109
>>8070077this is what you get when people say to "write for yourself" maybe it made sense in your head but it's incomprehensible to read
>>8070077I feel overwhelmed reading it. That's really all I can say.
>>8070077Anin I haven't read all of it cause I literally just woke up to go to work, but I like the little I saw. Art is good and the politics are interesting enough. Could be even better depending where it leads.
I don't want to make manga unless it looks as good as my favorite mangaka's work.
What's about the art don't mater talk? I looked into it, and there are only very view popular manga with amateurish art. Around 5 or something.
>>8070136I think a better way to look at it is that the art being technically skilled is not what makes for a successful manga. Rather it's whether the art is appealing to look at. There's alot of crossover between technically skilled art and appealing art, but it's not a full crossover and there's plenty of technically skilled art that is very unappealing to look at, while some even quite amatuer art is appealing. You're not being judged by art professors here, nobody cares how skilled your art is, people only care if they personally like to actually look at your art.
>>8070137>technically skilled is not what makes for a successful manga.Statistics says otherwise. The overwhelmingly majority of successful manga has technically good art.99.9999% or something. We have original opm, we have Orb what else?
>>8070138I told you there's alot of crossover, but the fundamental fact remains that people are not concerned whether the art is skilled but rather whether it is appealing. There are just as many, infact likely far more manga that are technically skilled but which enjoy no success because they don't appeal to anybody. And amongst these technically skilled and appealing works which are popular, they vary greatly in popularity, and that variation has no correlation between skill.
>>8070139>And amongst these technically skilled and appealing works which are popular, they vary greatly in popularity, and that variation has no correlation between skillNow you are moving the goal posts. The reality is, the sequestrate of amateurish looking manga is statistically 0.If you can't produce professional looking art, you will never make it. That's the reality. If you are already good at art, it may be better to invest your time into something else, instead of polishing your art further. Maybe, but that's a completely different statement.
Actually the opposite of "art does not matter" is true. There are far more successful manga that has beautifully rendered art and a shit story, than the other way around.
>>8070145Whats the point...
>>8070147The point is not to shit in the streets, but use a toilet.

At worst it could be traced from AI by a skillful inker, but that's it.
>>8070028I have the opposite problem. I use myself as a model so I'm much more experienced drawing men than women
Should I just trace from AI for my manga and become a skillful inker?
>>8070372Regardless of whether it's LLM-generated or not, this feels fitting
When doing a story that spans decades, is it easier to try and design adult characters first and figure out what they would look like younger and older or would it be better to start with young versions?
>>8070711I'd go with general idea, come up with something like what they probably would look like then by the time you get around to using that version of them you may have changed a few details in the setting or the characters themselves and can easily implement the necessary tweaks to the younger version.
>>8070372this is 100% AI. And I won't explain why because that would help the ai frauds.

Since I've almost hit 200 pages, I've decided at this point to return to print format and make a tankoubon. Cover design will be a remake of the first ever cover I made for the series, which I think is fitting. Since I have colored chapters, I still can't decide if I should just go all black and white for consistency or just keep the colors in. It's tough since it means I'll have to stick with the same type of paper or else it will stick out like a sore thumb.
>>8070778If something was done special I'm usually in favor of keeping it that way but if it's a hassle then I guess you don't have much choice.
>>8070372did AI solve the consistency issues
How long does a SHonen Jump mag level page take on average? I heard about 10h.160h per week, devided by 3 to 4, sounds legit? But that would mean at the same time, solo you could produce only 1 chapter per month. (or lower the quality)

What is actually wrong with using trace AI anyway? How is it fundamentally any different from tracing traditional reference photos, or blocking out compositions with 3D models? As long as the core narrative and worldbuilding are completely mine and the final lineart and rendering are done by hand, it should be a non issue. Yet people are instantly willing to condemn an entire work the second they suspect any AI involvement even when it's strictly being used as a behind the scenes utility tool just to speed up the mechanical drafting process. I think the sooner these anti-AI cultists go extinct, the faster and better everyone's career will be.

Anyway one of the things I've come to realize is that shonen manga...has a lotta fights? Like yeah, watching Bibbolon get knockered in the head by Gentoonks and shoot lasers out his feet is cool and all, but I'm thinking, you know, people are probably tired of seeing fight after fight after fight.... aaaaaaalll... the.... time..... so, like, rather than, you know, having a million pages of two buff himmie-hulks duking it out over the mountain range, like, my manga is going to be a battle shonen, WAIT FOR IT........... without ANY fights. Crazy, right? But I'm thinking yeah. The market's ready for it. And yes, that means no using speed lines as a crutch. It's time we move manga past its tired tropes

>>8068824Ill tell you my super secret way of good paneling that will blow your mind if you tell me yours first anon-kun (im being silly but i mean it also)
>>8071390Nta but the best way to do panels is to treat it like an art piece like if a person blows bubbles in the previous page or in a corner of the page then you zoom in and make each bubble its own panel or another thing you could do is what I like to call the Flat Box method where every panel is a flat box and why yes I'm a western capeshit artist how could you tell
>>8071307>Even the old GreekWere all gay. You're killing yourself here, homie.
>>8068828You do need to understand the rules but not to the point of stifling creativity. The rules tell you what probably doesn't work and some things that might, after that as long as you have a clear vision of how you want a scene to look you can panel it almost completely off vibes.

It's a shame that his paneling/ actual comic making appeared to be confusing , though I don't would've loved to read it myself to understand his hang ups more clearly. I believe one can learn from other's mistakes so it would've been valuable for me as well.
>>8071217>>8071220I was too lazy to comment on it at the time.I thought he overly re-used panels, but the art itself was nice I think. I also hope he is not demoralised.
>>8071745It was probably around 100h of work. Than he lost the contest and got a lot of shit from the thread. I can see how frustrating that can be.But the criticism was fair. The comic was confusing. He rather was working on itself and got no opinions from beta-readers or he got some normie bitches who yes-maned him into believing there was no problem.Whatever it was, it was the wrong thing to do.
For many people who posts here it's like okey, grind a couple of years more and you will get better. If that guy changes some things that aren't extremely complicated to implement, his next comic could already be much better.I think that's what triggered a big reaction. Not that the thread hated on him. People saw potential for quick and easy improvement.
>>8071762he didn't get "shit" you idiot, people told him good advice that will help him. That's what he wanted and thats what this genreal is for.Being confusing and hard to read is the biggest problem to fix in manga.
>>8071574Because that's literally your only option
>>8071563>last two lead left to right despite being a right to left sequence Oh no no no
>>8071821you might have autism, anon
>>8071815It's fixed by localizing it into english, changing references to reflect modern western pop culture and punching up the dialogue so it doesn't read so flat and bland.
>>8070077>>8071217>>8071220>>8071745The fuck are you guys talking about, the link literally works i just read it. Did any of you fact check the anon who said it was broken or did you just assume they were right and go off that? Cause if thats the level of depth youre using to judge the work then what good are you in any of these threads fr>nb4 u call me the artistIm not
>>8071821I drew a line for you, how confused could you possibly be
>>8071815You wasn't able to read one sentence further adhs zoomer asshole faggot kill yourself>>8071829>Did any of you fact checkIt worked on my phone, later i wanted to read on pc and it was gone
>>8071831Give me a break, this generals been full of nodraw essayists so forgive me for jumping the gun
Fujimoto is a lazy dog but at least he isn't doing that.
>>8071823>>8071830The way his eye looks at the bottom left is a great way to lead in that direction, your yellow paint red lines be damned.
Bought a non weeb lead, it's scratchy as fuck.Japanese thing acshully good?
>>8069653Ok update i actually bought this along the gpen of course and it works, pic related is some test I did with it.I guess it also depends on the specific paper, and this paper is definitely not good enough for actual decent high effort drawings, but its good enough for practice. So thanks again!
>>8071952What paper do you use, i used pic related, it's less than 1cent per sheet and i have less feathering, at least if don't erase the sketch before inking.
>>8071838Um it's called being consistent
>>8068237>this is because rent prices are insane and thats because of immigrants, open borders.actually all major retailers have exponentially increased their profit margins since the pandemic in a way that does not track with any supply chain or global labor issues, they literally just raise prices because they can then lobby for smokescreens over how it's the fault of some other people, when objectively it does not make logical sense, all of those brands are multinational, there's more than enough space and resources for everyone with a ridiculous surplus in every area (ie: look up how much food companies just throw away at the end of the day and how many vacant houses are out there gathering dust)even if immigrants are not helping the situation to put the blame fully on the is to assume that the people in control of the resources and their distribution are benevolent purely rational actors that are giving everyone their fair share and forgetting the possibility of them having perverse incentives
Any tips for drawing cityscapes?
>>8072189Set aside a lot of time for it.
>>8072195Fug...
>>8072189just buy a train ticket to whatever part of japan your story takes place in, snap a few pictures, and add a greyscale filter to them for backgrounds.
>>8070127I used to be trapped like this but I realized what I actually wanted to do was to mimic the STYLE of the things I like, not the quality.
working on foreshortening
I started learning guitar and I'm not drawing at all anymore. What do
>>8070088Sums up my thoughts on it as wellThe text also reads like it was poorly fan-translated from Japanese. Is that what you were going for? It's very stilted, awkward and difficult to parse. I assume since you aren't fluent in Jap either, that it reads just as poorly if not worse for them. I pity whatever Jap translator would have to try and transcribe this into some kind of coherence.
For the second time in almost 5 months, I have the rare time in which I haven't been bizarrely IP rangebanned automatically for the actions of some random spammer who apparently is jumping from IP to IP with me getting caught in the crossfire. So I'll take this time to just post the Chapter 6 cover art I've made while I also finished up storyboarding. This is the outer cover.
>>8072356And here's the inside alt cover.
>>8068745the technique you describe is covered in classic art education. You plot out a scene and then pick a piece of it as the picture plane of your canvas because there's something of interest there. Even some perspective resources like Erik Olson's video course cover this
>>8068839the way i see these two araki pages, the diagonal panel borders seem to match the reading direction, so probably a leading-the-gaze type of deal, though on the second image it doesnt feel quite right with how the second small panel seems to lead to the bottom row instead of the one on the top left
>>8072476There's some crossover, but that's not quite right. In that kind of art, it's about composition. When you look at a landscape painting, there's nothing outside of the frame of the image, you don't even imagine it. And your choice of the frame is determined not by the demands of the story or the page, but purely by aesthetics. In the example I drew of the apple on the table, or the Naruto headbands example, as a static art piece, it's probably better as a landscape, uncropped. Those examples are not cropped for any compositional aesthetics reasons. They're cropped for storytelling reasons. The panel needs to be that shape and size to convey a certain sense of timing and impact. It's not an illustration, it's a comic. If you draw your comic panels like illustrations, your comic will be devoid of any life
>>8072356It's cool, feels a little bit empty, but i assume you will ad the title at the top.I woould change the flow of the hair to make the composition work better.
You complained about the lolis so I'm not making the next thread. Do it yourselves.
>>8072515the complainers are not regulars, ignore them! We love lolis here!
