    >go to gesture site
    >weird, stiff, unnatural poses that are boring
why? why is it so tough to find one where they just load up images of athletes, dancers, random people in a natural state, or something fun? i know pinterest exists but the image quality is low and you either have to scrape boards or save stuff individually
    >>
because fragments of life are not filled with athletes and dancers. i do not pirouette when i grab something off a shelf.
    >>
    >>8063904
well yeah but athletes and dancers are doing more natural stuff than this and it's way more enjoyable to look at and draw. i don't know how useful this is for conveying movement but all gesture sites really have is this
    >>
    >>8063906
Seriously, in what world would I need to add this shit to my "visual library" when no sane person would ever pose like this
    >>

    >get the camera to where you want
at least 30 minutes of stress but you get something original in the end

    >searching for the reference that fits your sketch
    >going through hundreds of close matches but the angle is off or the post is slightly different
at least 30 minutes of stress and theres no guarantee you find anything good, but you could also instantly find it

    which is better?

The point, if I recall, is for you to easily identify the shapes and "rhythms" (how they connect to each other) of the figure. Also a good way to gauge how well your sight proportions are. Of course, you'll probably never use the unusual poses but you can always modify them when you reach that level.

Its literally a skill issue if you cannot pull gesture out of any pose. I'm not trying to shit on you I'm just stating the entire point of the exercise. Poses that have a natural strong sense of flow and gesture are like baby super easy mode. Pulling gesture out of more static or unconventional poses is more difficult as it requires a much more refined sense of form, weight, flow, etc

Yep. Plus no one wants to draw these basic flabby bitches. Either have shredded individuals so you can learn from the anatomy or obese blobs so you can learn there too. The inbetween is boring as fuck and they should be peeping around corners, the perspectives should be stretched, there should be a composition etc.

Honestly one of the worst ways to learn.
    >>
    OP is right.
I have 85GB+ of downloaded reference photo sets and 99% of it is unusable crap.
Even poses that try to be dynamic are always stiff as fuck because... The model IS stiff as fuck trying to hold an uncomfortable pose for several photos without losing balance and moving.
    Add to it
    >absolute horrid lighting from 3 directions that hides all forms in 80% of all sets (pic unrelated though)
    >lens distortions
    >they always take pictures from unnatural low angle
    >>
    >>8064455
beyond not using the pose it just doesn't teach you anything but how to draw a figure contorting themselves weirdly. it's better to see images where natural movement is occurring, because most want to draw characters interacting and existing within the world vs models doing meaningless shit like this >>8065848
    >>
this is why I use porn.
    especially vintage stuff.
They really knew how to get great shot composition, framing and lighting back then. And it was purely analogue. No digital work at all. You had to really know your shit.

Ngmi, they only made people hold poses for reference back in the day because they had no other choice.

The only reason to have gigs of reference photos is to never draw and instead always be finding a different pose you like better, literally just delete all that shit, it's a distraction.
    >>

I only draw things spontaneously, if I have to spend hours constructing a reference then the soul is lost and the pose won't work.

unironically the gesture sites are complete ass. posemaniac is 3d models and feels much more useful. You can find a ton of signature poses that are actually useful and rotate them. Especially the sexy poses and idol poses for me. yes gesture isnt neccessarily about specific poses, but you might aswell get familiar with getting poses right in flow and proportion that you might actually end up using.

That you cannot use 3d models like in posemaniac? Sure this shit has some issues if you want to use it as a standalone reference. But a gesture isnt even supposed to be a detailed drawing so I dont see the issue.

You've stumbled on something animators have known for a long time. A still pose can never capture the true form of a body in motion. There's physics, kinetics, gravity involved.
Most of these photo sets are trying to compensate and "fake" dynamism with elaborate poses. But if you use them as the basis of your drawing, that fake staged feeling will come through. They're not fighting gravity the way a dancer or a runner is.
If you want good poses with real action, take still frames from video.
