How do you improve your observation ability?

    >>8061786
from where? and what sort of feedback? like if an arm is too wide, then sure I can fix that but what happens when i move on to the next drawing? do i just pay attention harder to the arms?
    >>
    >>8061793
and i failed to correctly observe the size of the arm just now. how ironic

    >>8061824
with that reference yeah no shit, pick better stuff to copy
    >>
    >>8061777
Break things down to simple shapes in your head/draw things as a collection of simple shapes. Do this overlayed over some reference image if you want to get the hang of it.

    what's the better stuff
    >>

for one, not a drawing that isn't finished or doesn't have any discernible shapes, real life photos for example

By doing observational drawing. This isn't complicated.
    >>
    >>8061874
Thats what im doing, but how do you keep getting better at it?
    >>
    >>8061875
    >>8061777
Do the DRSB exercises (flip your ref upside down, focus on the negative space only, etc). What's really helped me is a combination of the "cognitive method" (active recall) and meaningful tracing, while increasing my overall time looking at the reference while I draw.

You can also start with large shapes first.

For life drawing, feel the subject with your hands for several minutes before you draw. For photos, you may also use grids to nail down the proportions more accurately.
    >>
    >>8061969
whats the cognitive method (active recall)?

Life drawing and copies. Thats it.

You take your reference and look at it for thirty seconds. Then you hide the reference and do your best to draw the reference from memory. After that, take out the reference and then do another drawing except this time you actually look at the reference as you draw. Finally, hide the reference one last time and draw from memory again. Take out all of your drawings and compare your results.

Jason Brubaker's book is pretty good but I disagree with him saying that you shouldn't engage in tracing during the process. I've found that tracing over the ref and breaking it down into simple shapes helps with more accurate memory drawings.

    >>8061875
You do it a lot and you just get better. It just works.

Practice lineart and shapes of value, study other artists exercises and finished work looking for these elements.
    >What else besides artists works?
Anything, a photo or a real life object near you. Could be a mug or some Sakura figurine. Draw what you consider to be the outer edge and work your way in when the silhouette has been enclosed (be mindful of where you are observing from, if you change your posture or move too much it will make things harder for you, this is less of any issue with photos). You'll notice that you tend to make some lines or shapes bigger, or that you favor a specific area when observing, making uneven proportions, or that you have a wobbly line, or that your brain shuts down when there's too much information and you just decide to half ass it. All of these patterns can be spotted, isolated and practiced in each study. You can pick up Keys to Drawing and do a bunch of the exercises in it and that will be enough to get you moving in the right direction.
The short answer is be nitpicky and ask questions about what seems off and try to attempt a slightly better attempt, in your exercises, you can't adapt without actually seeing yourself making mistakes and noticing your own habits.
    >>
    >>8062013
He's just making you practice your observational skills
    >>
    >>8061777
Why? As someone with high observation skills that doesn't really help creativity-wise
    >>
    >>8062148
because i am someone with low observation skills and I make a lot of mistakes during my studies
    >>
    >>8062154
Okay but understand accurate studies don't translate to good composition or interesting designs
    >>
    >>8062388
well part of learning is being able to accurately see what you're looking at yeah? I think it helps when doing things like figure drawing. I know stuff like composition and interesting designs require a different method/lense to learn

watch good movies and anime and watch them with deliberate (but not overdone) intention. think about why animators and key frame artists make the decisions they do, why cameras frame the shots they do. in a sense you're teaching yourself how the sausage is made and that can take away some of the magic of art. but if you're an artist, you're best off asking yourself these questions
    >>
    >>8062786
    linebeck ftw
    >>
    >>8061839
I disagree, yes studying a finished piece is also good but studying sketches if you're trying to improve your own sketches is not bad either, take the yoh yoshinari sketchbooks for example, you can learn a lot from the way he draws his "rough" sketches that you couldn't if you only had the finished pieces

Ig my long term goals would to improve upon my draftsmanship skills and be able to draw more natural lookingposes and more dynamic poses.
Short term wise im working on my accuracy since its pr bad to make doing studies easier. Also gotta do more clothes and dude studies and apply that

    >>
    >>8062786
how do you even come up with a drawing like this
how can you know how to shade them if they dont exist? And how can you decide to put harsh light from the top left? do artists really sit and think "I will draw link and linebeck but in a unique original style with full color and rendering and no lineart and the background will be this shade of grey with this texture on it and there will be a strong light from the top left and he will be doing a peace sign"?

Consoom so much that you start being able to tell whether something works or not
    >>
    >>8061777
This is a good question, actually.
    >>
    >>8061777
Observation ability is about knowing what to look for, not necessarily your ability to see which, barring disability, is probably average. Soldiers and hunters look for silhouettes and movement. Plane inspectors look for signs of micro fractures. Spies and security officers read facial ticks and body language. These people may not have exceptionally better eyes, they just break down what they see, isolate certain features or qualities, and check it against a list of priorities.
Depending on what kind of art you want to do, your priorities can greatly vary. A figure artist will look for physical landmarks. A plein air landscape painter will focus more on light and colors rather than perspective. How body weight shifts is going to matter more to a character animator than a portraitist, etc.
You need to know what you want.
    >>
    >>8070206
That makes sense. I've found that since I heavily rely on landmarks of the body to draw and copy, when those landmarks are hidden, its very hard to know what to look for and keep track of the drawing.
