I hate webtoons, but i wanted to draw something for the little zoomies.Any tips on how to make the normal manga layout be readable on samertphones?Bigger text, bigger panels, that's it?
You know that when it's all done and your manga is finished no one will praise you for it right?
>>8061212You just never stop drawing and let the millis pour in till you die with 45 and than your assistants can keep milking the cow.
>>8061212I will praise myself for it

Reminder, you don't need good art skills to make a manga that sells well and gets an amazing anime adaptation.Don't get too hung-up in drawing pretty pictures you only can produce 19 pages a month.Focus 80% of your effort into creative decisions such as story and character writing, then networking for opportunity.Recruit, train, and delegate the rest of 20% of technical stuff to your employees.A classic start-up business 101.Applicable in any field.Don't be like Otoyomegatari, Vagabond, and Berserk, or Witch Hat Atelier/GALAXIAS/Gokurakugai.One keeps getting into hiatuses. One doesn't give a fuck anymore. One bites the dust. The others have inconsistent release schedules with even lower than weekly serialization worth of pages per chapter.Your main focus as a mangaka is to deliver entertainment value as quickly and as consistently as possible.
>>8061286Such simple goofy styles also really only fit to comedy. Not everyone likes writing comedy...You can't just chose what style you draw. It depends on the energy you have.
>>8061212People DM me and tell me they liked my manga... and people still buy it in shops. Someone actually asked if they could draw my character as a cameo/easter egg in their manga. Don't be so negative! We should be here to help each other!
>>8061314You obviously draw boring mainstream shit like the phony faggot you are. If you are actually honest with your art then noone cares about it.
>>8061347Being a hateful crab is the reason you're as miserable as you are.
>>8061347Not at all. I drew a silly niche series for years that ended in aug. I have barely any reads/followers, but the ones who get into it really get into it.
Finally got past my 100+ page mark for my comic. Now I gotta make the inevitable social accounts for sellin my wares cause just postin on this board wont get you anywhere
>>8061353If you wouldnt draw mainstream shit you couldn't even publish it. You are just another hypocrite faggot
>>8061366What do you want to draw that the mainstream wouldn't accept? Be honest, don't be phony
Any advice on how to fully commit to writing shonen? I’m planning to dabble in a few different genres to figure out where my strengths really lie but if I have to pick the one I personally resonate with the most, I want it to be shonen.
>>8061400Shonen isnt a genre its a demographic. If you have interests/likes that young boys/teens like then thats how you commit. If you hate it move on to something else
>>8061376I'm not here to spoonfeed you. You are probably jewdified american faggot so you are used to getting nigger semen spoonfed.
>>8061276>some wack shit.It sure is kek, you should keep drawing it.
>>8061405Look upon this miserable crab, too spineless to even say what he wants to draw, yet wants to call others hypocrites for not being honest with what they draw. Too hatefully angry to find joy, too stupid to change, doomed to wallowing in loneliness and self pity.
>>8061212I posted mine on ic and some other boards and they all praised me, I had heard that people on /a/ where especially harsh toward anon made comics but they seemed to like mine for what it was
>Reminder, you don't need good art skills to make a manga that sells well and gets an amazing anime adaptation.>posts a childrens gag manga
Im studying key frames from anime and holy fuck are those guys efficient. They have this color code for shadows and highlights in their pencil sketches.Hey don’t do unnecessary hatching at all.Super stream lined.Key and action poses are superb to most mangaka as well. We often hear, the comparison between western illustrative style and japanese anime style of comics. But the mangaka draw LIKE animators, animators ARE animators. With the color-coded pencilings they could properly split the work between key framers and assistants.Studying key frames is probably the best way to learn manga besides watching film students movies and reading the classics.

>>8061435And why not?

Jojo is gag manga as well and it's not drawn with scribbles
>>8061438Isn't the same true for like every genre?
why do people here always try to find examples of how you don't need good art instead of trying to improve
>>8061440Jojo is a mystery/thriller battle shonen. Araki said himself in his book about manga theory that you need to draw food well if you want to invoke hunger in the reader. He made a similar comparison with invoking pain in the reader by drawing wounds and injuries well.>>8061441A genre you actually enjoy will take you much farther.

I decide I want to draw this using monochrome colors. Like an old-school newspaper comic strip or manga.>>8061426I post mine at /ic/ and /co/. I'm considering the horse board and altchans.
I love manga so much
>>8061357Following this up, what do any of you guys(who actually draw comics mind you) post on your socials? What's more gay, drawing porn or sucking cock?
my manga is about establishing shots
>>8061857dick sucking takes 10mins, drawing pages to men other men blow their load takes 10 hours. Drawing porn is always the gayest. Afterall your body of work exist to make hordes of men cum making no different than a sexworker.
>>8061932Fuck you it is, sex work is a one and done. My favorite hentai last forever.
>>8061276
Anyone need a hentai plot idea? I got something brewing that I certainly won't use myself, so feel free to steal it. Might have been done already, but whatever. It would be a manga called "The Iwasaki Technique". It's a story that follows the 20 something y.o Choji Iwasaki, who's a total pervert. He's ugly, has bad social skills and it's a genuinely unlikable person all around. So of course he doesn't get laid. As a way to deal with his frustrated sexual life, he ends up mastering a technique that allows him to have lucid dreams almost every night. You can guess what he does in those dreams. Sex with the cashier across the street. Sex with his coworker. Sex with whatever woman he finds walking down the street and etc. But here's the conflict: he can control his own actions in these dreams, but he can't control the dream or the reaction of the people in it. So he will often have nightmares while lucid dreaming, and sometimes the people in his dreams may react to his perversions in ways that makes him question his own actions and sometimes leaves him truly scarred. Or you could just make another power fantasy hentai. That's pretty good too. Sorry for being another ideas guy. I had the idea at work and I just really felt like sharing it. Just ignore if you want.

>>8062187Cool, i could win that.
Isn't going from A3 manuscript, to A5 print, like a little bit overkill?
Guys i did little studys of digital manga (Chainsaw) with pencil and ink. I haven't try to emulate the digital linework, just the loose style. And feels right for me. Digital never gives me this feeling. Before i thought, that's because i prefer trad manga. Trying to make digital look like trad is stupid. But now i tried the other way around and trad still makes more sense for me.On the other hand, i understand how stupid it would be to draw something like Chansaw Man in trad. You see used a high stabilisation setting and probably drew most panels even without a sketch. It's pretty much fast food art, and doing it digital makes much more sense. But for some reason it never felt right for me.Maybe if i had a super expensive cintique it would feel better. But i kinda doubt it.
>>8061857Being Amerimutt is the most gay. In fact even worse than gay because you are gay with jews and shitskins
>>8062187Why bother if I'm already a better mangaka than the judges?
There is this whole new ground of colored manga, that is only slightly covered by French facsimile manga a Korean slop. You think with online platforms gaining more influence we will see the switch?
>>8062340its definitely possible, but you'd have to get someone else to color it. I think a fully colord manga at a rgular pace is too much for one human.
>>8062342There are barely any popular mangaka without assistance. Nihei maybe? But yeah, you would need a bigger team for sure.Maybe manga and anime production teams could work together. Like the manga team draws everything and a team at an anime studio colors it.They could color the manga with a potential anime adaptation already in mind.

>>8061250my biggest issue with your last few posts is that there is no stars in the bg. It would really help if the backgrounds had depth>>8061400I'm assuming you're talking about a fight/battle manga when you mean shounen.I recommend trying to build a couple simple ideas and seeing if one demands more attention. Learn to do pre-production and develop ideas quickly. A common action series formula is finding an occupation for the character/their allies and dealing with conflict from others who are interacting with that occupation. Create concepts that don't require a huge time commitment. I'm currently downscaling my bloated series. write text efficiently too. Lines should be snappy and memorable, not clunky endless sentences. that's another problem I need to fix for myselfSpending time on fights means you need to make them support your story. Characters need to be clashing for a personal reason, and the stakes should be important to the reader. One piece is currently being torn by fans because fights mean nothing to the story and bog down the pace. Hone in on the themes you want to cover and write villains and heros that battle over their mindsets. create more and more tension in that conflict with each fight.>>8062435straight autism. 99% of the time, shounen means "I want to make a fight manga" and if i'm wrong and my advice means nothing, whatever.
>>8062447>99% of the time, shounen meansFor me it means safe edgy, you write an edgy manga about serious topic, but your protags are not allowed to smoke, because they underage...
>>8061458its simple, you want characters abstracted so they are relatable, but you want events detailed, so you can place yourself into them
>>8061455>180 rule*180 suggestionit's literally only something to worry about when dealing with a physical camera (and/or trying to imitate the presentation of one), comics are not representational of real spaces, it's extremely easy to keep track of what's going on after reading more than 1 manga because you simply get used to the different visual storytelling conventions of it
>>8062487ieslb...
>>8062503Literally pic related.>>8062506>it's literally only something to worry about when dealing with a physical camera (and/or trying to imitate the presentation of one), comics are not representational of real spaces,What? Of course is a comic panel a camera, what else? Most of the time, you understand whats going on, it just makes the flow worse. For me better flow is always better.
>>8062506I think the 180 rule can be justified not with reference to a camera, but with reference to our eyes. When we engage with a scene before us in real life, we typically do not go outside of the 180 rule, we are spectators, watching it pass us by.It's too much of an imaginary leap to imagine movement more dynamic than the bounds of the 180 rule, and so it feels jarring. We cannot imagine how we got from point A to point B and we become confused as to where we now are.
>>8062447Maybe Im just a puritan but that is one too many shots of puss. Like we get a whole 360 of this bitch's crotch and I think we lose whatever plot thread we had goin a little bit.If I were you Id axe one of em, preferably the one in the middle before the legs spread to emphasize the perv's perverted reaction.I'd also would wanna know if you can find some more accurate refs for that very top panel with the reverse puss angle cause those cheeks dont seem to be hanging in a natural way at all.
>>8062433Has the guy with the hat teleported?
>>8062565I wonder if the original storyboard would work better for you. I redrafted this page on a whim cause the dialogue wasn't flowing well, she also didn't have any clothes to lift like she's doing in the original panel.
What i think is funny, is how we (or you) lowered the standards after aislopafication happened. Now people think filters, photobashing and 3d tracing are legit techniques from the good old days.
>>8062573Well I am missing the context of the text mind you but in my ideal world I would do something like pic related where you give a little more focus to the guys perverted reaction and emphasize another aspect of her body and then have her open up her crotch
>>8062447Thanks anon. Someone else said the same hting on /beg/. I think I'll add the stars before publishing.
>>8062583Like maybe emphasize her tits or her tummy that leads into her puss, and if shes naked just have a pose that that keeps her arms close to her body like hugging herself in some form
>>8062603These characters are visiting each other each night and shes revealing more and more. the first visit was breast focused. I think if she repeated stuff from the previous nights it might get redundant. She also still needs to be holding her flashlight. I will move the first shot to focus on her stomach more, the dialouge says that's where he's looking but the image doesn't reflect that.
>>8062603Also depending on the context I would advise being more willing to change the cript for the sake of a good looking page. Ive had scenarios where my initial script didnt mesh with the drawings that I ended up making but in almost all instances I would change the script on the spot until something worked with the page that I got. As long as it didnt contradict the proceeding events changin the words is easier then changin the pics
>>8062622OH SHIT THAT TOP PANEL WAS HER TUMMY?Given the shot of her ass right after I thought it was supposed to be bottom angle shot of her ass and puss. In that case I would axe that panel for sure cause it gets too cut off from the main area of the tummy and get better angles. I trust your skills for the rest
Your hentai skills is very top tier laundry. I hope one day we can get some DM hentai.
>>8062271I apprecitate the sentiment but I think that was the OTHER Australian porn artist.>>8062018scope change; now the comic is about a wily cat and the pretty vet trying to calm it down.
What would you do if a publisher was actually interested in your comic and offered you a serialization? I think I would probably turn it down. I wouldn't be able to work under a deadline and all the pressure that comes with being paid to make manga.
>>8062723>tfw anon's comic isnt good enough to twist the publishers arm to extend the deadline
>>8062723I would say no simply because I don't want to hand over the rights to my passion project and pray that they won't axe it before its finished.
>finally able to draw manga>have all the materials and skills I need>too depressed to keep drawingWhy is life so shit?
>>8062723When you are getting published your mindset changes. So it may very well be that you are suddenly able to do it fast enough.
>>8062756lmaojust make a new IP you one trick pony
>>8062723it depends how much they want me to change. If they are trying to make it woke then I would say no.
been losing the drive I had for making comics. I doesnt feel the same passion for it as I did in the early days. Well thats life
>>8062824It becomes a routine I will admit. I only ever get the high after completing a certain page count/complete an arc or that one page that I drew today was sick as fuck. Its not like Im gettin the high from audience reaction either(cause I dont have one)

I had over two weeks to draw 1 page manga for the csp contest. I came up with a little idea and did nothing afterwards. I started yesterday, drew some sketches and layouts. Now the deadline is in 12 hours, i've done basically nothing. I feel myself burned out and depressed. Already thought about just quitting.Yeah, that's the life of a mangaka, innit?
People who have been working on the same comic for years without even having any sort of following, are you at least having fun?

Maybe that anon was right. If pro mangakas can get away with serving up this kind of garbage anatomy then you can too. Grinding to actually git gud at drawing is for untalented retards. At the end of the day story is all that actually matters.
>>8063412Uh this looks way better than anything I've ever seen posted here.
whats the average age here? 35? 25?
>>8063416>>8063412This type of bullshit always gets posted and more bullshit gets flung cause it tees up easy bait. but you never see anyone try to analyze the skill gap, or admit where the panel works. This took me two attempts and It's still not as good as the original because trying to turd polish a piece purely for the sake of anatomical correctness is retarded. The original has a twist and throwing back of the arm that mine does not capture as well. The original does the perspective better, with the hand foreshortening well without exaggerating a ton. and in an attempt to add more energy to the piece, I made the head completely wrong. not to mention the face lacks everything that makes makima work. This original is far better than you give it credit. Crabs who smugly agree with shit takes just so they can harshly compare apples to oranges need to die. I'm willing to share my failure and admit I can be better, and grow from seeing this piece. You both probably did nothing today.
>>8063444Why include me though I literally said the OG makima looks good. I wasn't being sarcastic.

>>8063412I like shitting on mr. safe-edgy myself, but for the right reasons. Here you are in the wrong. It's like that one Pain meme from naruto, where people have posted smearing frames from animation. I mean not quite, but Chainsaw is very fast comic, drawn fast and is supposed to be read fast as well. You think like an illustrator. From that standpoint it is bad anatomy. But if you think about it in therms of a weekly manga, that needs to build up momentum and carry it over thousands of pages, you criticism becomes retarded. In a regular art circle it would be fine to shit on such panels. But as a fellow mangaka, you should know better.

how's my linework, does it have that manga feel? sometimes I feel like I get into my head too much with this stuff.
>>8063648It's not a traditional look, but it's similar to what Chanta does
People here only know to talk about One when it comes to mangaka that started with bad art but got better. But yesterday I came across this old doujin made by Yui Aida, the author of Gunslinger Girl, and here you can see how his art looked like before he got an official serialization. The art reminds a lot of the work posted here, and even a little of my own. This page is actually a little better than the earlier pages of the doujin, but it still looks super amateurish in comparison to the official manga. I just thought it would be interesting to share it here to remind everyone that you're not really that far off...
>>8063657Another page from it.
>>8063659And here's the official manga art. Sure, Yui didn't do most of this like the architecture, the guns, cars and etc, but he did work on the characters and other things. And my point still stands.
>>8063661Another page from the official manga.
bringing up chainsawman as a good example has got to stop. That manga is an experiment for a new generation so its not playing by the same rules. You say it's art is crap and people whose first manga was CSM will snap back with "art doesn't matter in manga, only storytelling". Sure, but the story in CSM sucks too. Part 1 is fine, but even the fans say part 2 shit the bed. Now they circle back and say the art is actually good because it did its job to convey the scene. Yet some random schmuck here posts a comic and people tear it apart. The truth is he has a massive halo effect just from being on shonen jump. Could he have drawn better? Maybe, but he chose not to. "but he was overworked and sick" How does that affect the reader? Everyone here is tired, you don't give them the same grace. Art style and detail is just something you can't worry about as an amateur. Everyone already hates us just for attempting to draw manga, people look for reasons to NOT read amateur stuff. The manga on mangaplus (not creators) that are like C tier are pretty close to what you see here, just more polished and more direction to help them. Its better to focus on clarity and flow and draw for fun. And definitely dont take advice from people who clearly are not drawing
>geee, look how shit this pro mangaka is hahaha>posts page better than everything ever posted in this threadEvery fucking time, bros.
>>8063681It's really isn't that much better. Read the very first chapter if you want:https://mangadex.org/chapter/b1095416-82fd-4d2b-97f1-4cad0c9a5044 It looks pretty rough. Some anons here are genuinely making better art than this.
>>8063671Im reading it for the first time right now. Finished volume 7 5 mins ago. It's good, art is good, paneling is good (even though he is breaking the 180 rule all the time, which can be confusing), story isn't bad, characters are good.I hate how safe edgy it is. Otherwise it's solid. It has a nice flow.Regardless art. You can't fake experience and energy, he has both. If you can't appreciate a sketchy style, okey, fine. But it's good for what it is.
>>8063689Nta but yeah, part 1 one was pretty good, including the art. Wait until you get to part 2. That's when everything goes to shit. Fujimoto is a good author an he can be a great artist when he applies himself. But Chainsaw Man got butchered really hard.
>>8063681which ones have you read? ONE has bad art but his storytelling and pacing is great, so that means you need to read a few pages at least to really get that out of a manga.
>>8063671Composition and story should be the main focusArt can be nice but it won't carry a series far unless it's supposed to be ecchi
>>8063661Are there any mangakas who draw their vehicles/tech directly outside of like Nihei or former mecha designers like Mamoru Nagano?
>>8063695>directlyWhat you mean, directly?
>>8063695Nagano is not a former anything, FSS is still ongoing and he is arguably at the bleeding edge of the genre.
I wonder how tf I was able to draw manga before because now I can barely muster up the energy even though I'm better at drawing now.
>>8063692ONEs art isn't even bad. I rather look at this than 90% of the stuff I see on manga plus creators. Also he was always good at paneling and choreography. Those are the skills that matter most.

You guys are too stupid to see, the reason why Chainsaw man succeeds is simply because it's interesting.People don't think about metrics like art skill or a sensible story. They just simply like it. It's likeable. That's all that matters, focus on that.

>>8063809Here's an early one that also looks better than %90. Also why are you making up stuff? I read both the manga and webcomic though admittedly never finished them due to redraws and needing time for other things.
>>8063799>>8063843>massive improvement after years of consistent drawing Funny how One doesn't even want to be 'One' yet this thread constantly puts him as a benchmark to aspire to because of its own extreme mediocrity.
>>8063829The art is good tho
>>8063856I don't think anyone is aspiring to be ONE's level of art skill, but OPM largely got popular because of Murata and that's why it go published. ONE isn't really a proper benchmark anyway because while his art was subpart (and is at least now acceptable) it was his story telling, paneling, etc. that made it compelling. I mean, there are plenty of people who actually liked Mob Psycho more than OPM anyway, and Murata had no bearing on that, it was all ONE.But anyway, even putting ONE aside, you can look at a great many mangaka who's art is kinda shaky early on. Its why it is important to be constantly drawing, because you'll get better doing stuff over and over. At worst, you'll become more aware of your shortcomings, and your artstyle will evolve. Go take a look at early Bleach compared to later Bleach. Go take a look at early Junji Ito work, like his first chapter or two of Tomie, and then look at his work as he evolved. His earliest stuff is pretty rough. Acceptable, but not nearly as good as what he would eventually become.
>>8063829Why can't it succeed for a multitude of reasons? A combination of art, story, character design, pacing, paneling, etc. Read Araki's book on manga theory. He said the publishers often take a single glance at the first page of a submission before rejecting it. He said aspiring mangaka leave in tears after such a thing. The publisher isn't going to sit through multiple chapters waiting to see how "interesting" the story gets. Neither is some random reader.

I don't feel like drawing anymore. I don't want to give anythign to this world. You can eat my shit if you want but that's about it.

>>8063829now ask yourself what kind of person thinks its interesting?
>>8063995Yeah, most people. It sold over 30 million copies.
>>8063856ONE is the ultimate gotcha for people who only read stuff that already becomes popular. Most people unironically believe in their hearts that popularity is synonimous with quality. And that if somethings unknown, its bad by nature. They don't want to think that maybe they dont know what makes something good or bad because thats an attack on their taste. The sensible stance would be that its mostly luck what gets popular, thats how everything works. And something can be bad and get popular for various reasons (chainsawman) or be good and unknown (can't name examples beacuse they are unknown). In the context of making your own stuff, people get defensive and have to insist everything that isn't "discovered" is bad. Look at hte vitriol that guy has towards manga here, like it offends him that it even exists.

>>8061455>>8062506The 180 "rule" is something you keep in mind to avoid confusing the viewer in a chaotic scene, so that the viewer can easily maintain an understanding of the spatial relationship between the subjects of the shots.A camera rotating 180 degrees around a singular subject in throughout three consecutive shots does not break the 180 rule.
>>8063536>mr. safe-edgy myselfFujimoto? The guy who makes silly grindhouse gorefest manga? There nothing edgy about them at all.
Im studying OPM an CM to learn paneling and i noticed something.First of its absurd how good Murata is at drawing action. But even though Murata renders a lot more and his renders are a lot more realistic, Fujimotos art style is more realistic in therms of proportions, especially girls.Murata draws girls faces in the high abstracted anime style. But Fujimoto draws all people the same, with quite realistic proportions. He never draws chibby versions or cartoonish faces like Murata, so it gives his manga a solidity you don't have in OPM.CM looks a little bit like rotoscoping, very simple, sometimes crude, but there is a hard frame beneath that gives the whole thing solidity.I don't know what to do with this info, but it's very striking if you compare the two.
>>8064158Same here, the jakuza guy looks rotoscoped and the anime guy looks highly stylized.I don't know, i don't think i really like that.
Similar with Orb, it is animeish, but you still get the rotoscoped feeling from it. And i think it brakes the illusion less compared to amateurish drawn anime that highly stylized. >>8063657 >>8063659I propose a hypotheses that for amateurs it's better to draw stiffer figures with more realistic proportions. And not highly stylized anime.
In OPM even serious, realistic drawn guys get the big anime eyes. The tough guys eyes are more anime than most girls eyes in CM

They do not have any cultural connections to me, they follow a different moral codex and social norms. You can't cramp a bunch of people from all over the world into one place and have a healthy social group.
>>8064273Hide the posts you don't like. I'm serious.Anyway, what did you want to talk about? You've got me here, let's talk about manga.
Dragonball has always been overrated normie slop. Also has been milked to absolute death. There are way better manga but normies have no taste.
>>8064276How do i know you're not retarded?>let's talk about mangaI posted about my observations about CM and OPM. And it basically comes back to my old theory regarding low sexual dimorphism in humans. The difference between man and female is (objectively) very subtle, therefore hard to draw and easy to fuck up, especially in motion and under unusual angels. So anime turns up the sexual dimoprhism levels and makes the difference between males and females more obvious.Murata does that as well, his hot girls are in substance a lot more cuter than the real ones, big eyes, no noise, small chins. But they cross over into abstraction too much for me, the faces look less grounded compared to CM.That's a big problem with western comics and amateur comics, they have problems depicting cute girls. What is the use of a manga without pictures or conversations of cute girls?Fujimoto's manga is more or less a harem manga, and he is able to draw cute girls even with his very simple art style. But he is able keeps the solidity of his human figures as well, by not dipping to much into abstraction. That's the problem, the triangle between cute - solid - simplified is hard to get right. He is very effective at it, sure writing does a lot of heavy lifting as well, but CM with a different artist wouldn't work as good.I want to be able to draw cute, simplified girls, without loosing the ground of naturalistic proportions. But no one teaches that.
Too long don't read
>>8064290>That's a big problem with western comics and amateur comics, they have problems depicting cute girls.Eh... "Cute" isn't necessarily the goal. Japan loves cuteness, Japanese society highly values cuteness. Not so much for western countries, who value maturity much more. That's reflected in the depictions of the "attractive girl" leads. So how much of a problem that is depends on how much that appeals to you.>What is the use of a manga without pictures or conversations of cute girls?...to tell a story? Are you here to discuss manga or to shitpost?>Fujimoto's manga is more or less a harem mangaUh...... What? Can you elaborate?>I want to be able to draw cute, simplified girls, without loosing the ground of naturalistic proportions. thoughts on this page test/exercise? also these are random character designs I quickly came up with for the page exercise. I feel like I definitely need to work on anatomy and a style. I'd also add that my line work is definitely dependent on the pen/brush I'm using so it's not that consistent in general.
>>8064318I like the linework. The pose on the guy to the right look a little stiff on the last panel imo.

I think you have to be really good at visualizing things in your head to draw manga. Otherwise you just can't really draw the storyboards.
>>8064493That's not true. I genuinely can't visualize certain things myself. The solution is to just draw them first in whatever way you can.
>>8064495But the problem with story boards is that you should draw them fast and if you can't really visualize it in your head then you don't even really know if it will look good because it's drawn so fast and simple
>>8064498>you should draw them fastHuh? I never knew this was a thing. Sometimes I take half an hour to sketch a page paneling.

>>8064501sorry gay guy.
>>8064501You don't get it anon. The modern male has the testosterone and mental fragility of literal children. By not drawing pathetic losers who are actually really nice guys (once you get used to the smell) you are literally denying them sex and are no better than those mean girls from middle school. The only thing gayer than not having skid marked underwear from refusing to wipe is literally drawing good looking males. Stop judging and allow males to be cucked loser in their own fantasies.
Drew some sketches and tried to come up with some short story but I just couldn't think of anything. Often my mind is just empty and I simply can't think of anything.
>>8064290This reads as though you might be autistic. And not in the ironic, internet way, but the "legitimate face blindness" way, if you can barely tell the difference between males and females.Sexual dimorphism is barely a thing in more complex organisms, especially mammals to begin with, unless we're talking about something like a male lion having a mane and a female one not having one. It is far more of a thing in lower lifeforms like insects or certain fish and whatnot, where the male is quite literally a floating penis trying to find female and that is essentially all they exist to do.If you can't tell the difference between human men and women--and no, I'm not talking about just drawing huge tits or an hourglass torso to hips ratio--then you quite literally need to go back to the drawing board.
>>8064602>autisticZoomer meme.>if you can barely tell the difference between males and femalesI can tell and that's the problem. Our brains are hyper fixated on faces, but our hands are not. There is a categorical difference between a lion and a lioness, you can depict that even with a very low technical ability. Not in human, a nose is a nose, the difference between male and female nose is very subtle. If you push to make it distinct categories, like anime does, life becomes way easier. The human race gaslit itself into being not gay. Like, oh dude, look, that one has slightly bigger eyes and a few millimeters smaller jaw, woha, totally not gay to fuck that...
Has anyone tried the spoon nib? Looks like it sits between maru pen and g pen, which is exactly what im missing right now. As the maru pen is too fine and the g nib too soft for many applications.
>>8064615I just draw with fineliners. Nib pens are too scratchy for me.
>>8064613Averaging facial features out like this is a completely stupid way to go about this argument, though, it is with anything. You skew data, and don't get a real picture.Just in general, men tend to be taller, broader, more muscular, with more angular and defined features. Women tend to be shorter, with broader hips and larger pelvises, with higher fat content and smoother, rounder features. Its just that when drawing, people tend to exaggerate or emphasize these things as a baseline.Obviously, you can chariacture-ize your designs to make whatever you want. The idea is to make something appealing and/or interesting to look it, and it is kind of an age-old thing with creating characters for the design to kind of lean into their personality, or their role within the story. Like how the big beefy guy is your defender because he looks like a wall, or the slender petite girl is the archer, or whatever. Of course, you can get creative and buck those trends by turning them on their head, but I never found it that difficult to differentiate between drawing males and females.

>>8064833It means they get the exclusive right to publish the work. As in, you don't get to then go and publish it for free elsewhere when they're trying to sell it in whatever their publication is. Public transmission and secondary use just mean they're allowed to show it on their website or whatever.>they pay me license fees for my copyrightThey're paying you whatever the reward money is. If they're not listing prize money then you can assume there won't be any.>Hoe long?Depends on the terms of the contract. This is something you would ask them yourself, as this simply isn't important enough information to necessitate putting it front and center. Industry standard is 5 years automatic renewal but idk for competition winners. Almost certainly not 10-20 years.>So if there is an anime i will not get paid extra?Woah there cowboy. First of all, if you're retaining the rights to the intellectual property (as you almost certainly are, distribution rights are a separate thing), that means any anime deal would still need to go through you as the rights owner of the property. Second of all, you're not getting an anime off a small competition winning one-shot lmao are you kidding me? Dream big but try to keep within the bounds of reason.
>>8064833>>8064848 (Me)I feel I should add:You have to remember, with competitions like these they are looking for AUTHORS, not IPs. A good one-shot isn't what the publisher is looking for, what they're looking for is an author who shows the skills to make a good (read: successful) series. They don't really care about the one-shot itself, that's not their prize, YOU are their prize.
>>8064848As far as i understand (why the fuck are ai translations from Japanese so fucking bad, can the slop machine do anything right?) your one shot belongs to you, those are conditions for the serialisation. They have 2 categories: one-shot and 1st chapter. So if you get selected for serialisation you have to give away your right. I looked into it, google said it's forever, 70 years, as long as the copyright is valid.>>8064850>You have to remember, with competitions like these they are looking for AUTHORS, not IPsThey can't own me, but they can own the ip and sell merch, anime and so on.
>>8064852>I looked into it, google said it's forever, 70 yearsGoogle does not have access to manga author's publication contracts. I can tell you from my own experience that the industry standard for book distribution rights is 5 years. That may vary between publishers and circumstance, and naturally this is only a STARTING point, you can negotiate to suit your needs. This goes for all aspects of the contract. You can negotiate terms that do not suit you.Fair enough, I didn't know it was also looking for 1st chapters. In that case, your reward is the job and whatever the job pays as long as you can do it.>They can't own me, but they can own the ip and sell merch, anime and so on.What I mean is they're looking for an author who can create an IP they can profit from. Not literally owning you or your output. Even the biggest manga publications don't demand full ownership of the IP you create.

In the comic, he wears thesame badge that was later given to people whowere considered “inferior.”

>>8064918Oh hello there Mr. Gay Johnsons. Here's my pitch: Sunburn is a sci-fi action story that follows a trio of mercenaries trying to land a high-paying job in a big security/PMC company. Their first gig? Salvage data from a spaceship wreck in an arctic planet inhabited by all sorts of criminals. Ford is the leader of the trio. Serious, reserved and dependable. Mason? An unhinged operator who's really good with a shotgun and a womanizer when off the clock. And Chi-Chi, a sharp-tongued Mitihinan technician who got kicked out of the army after blowing up a warehouse while messing with classified weaponry. Their middleman is Dan, an alcoholic bum trying to get his old job back at said PMC, whose CEO is his own sister. The story would lean heavily into realistic combat and military aesthetics, while exploring a future where humanity has already colonized Mars and planets from different star systems and have also made an alliance and started coexisting with a sapient feline species called Mitihinans.

I think I really have to learn to tust myself that I will be able to draw the panels well. Otherwise you just can't do storyboards in an effective time manner.Pro manga artists often pretty much just do the panel layout and speech bubbles on storyboards. The drawings are almost stick figure tier. Thats one of the main reason why they can work so fast I think. They simply lose no time on the storyboard phase.
>>8065537Mangaka all do storyboards very differently. Oda and Toriyama have storyboards that almost look complete IIRC. Meanwhile someone like Araki makes story boards full of text and motion arrows.
>>8065537the storyboards should be drawn "fast" in the sense that you are sketching loose ideas, but the actual act of storyboard should take you hours. Its like writing, 90% of the time is thinking about what to put down and editing.
>>8065409>I like your art on the whole but believe the Ben Day dots reduce the quality of the art.Well, they're screentones. What else am I supposed to use? Also, the starry background was actually pretty easy (and fun) to do. It's just a bunch of white dots. Thanks for the feedback anyways.
>>8065546You can't take too long with storyboards because you still have to use so much time drawing the story. The longer I take on the storyboard the more I lose enthusiasm.Katsuhiro Otomo did it best I think. He didn't do storyboards at all. He just planned a scene in his head. That would be the best way to do it I think. But it's too hard for me.
>>8065485I'm trying nigga
>>8065549>Katsuhiro Otomo did it best I think. He didn't do storyboards at all.Lol. Yes, obviously the best solution is to just do it perfectly the first time.Storyboarding exists because that is not something you can just rely on doing. Storyboards are supposed to be fast and loose SO YOU DON'T LOSE MUCH TIME WHEN YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND AND HAVE TO THROW OUT THE WORK AND START OVER. It's an iterative step. Of course if you just always go with the first thing that you put on the page storyboarding feels like a waste. You storyboard the chapter first so you can EDIT the chapter. Writing it down is where you make the work, editing is where you make the work GOOD.
I don't understand your indecision with storyboarding. I just imagine the scene in my head and turn it into panels. Of course, a lot of times the scene won't work exactly the way you wanted, but you just make some adjustments. It's not hard guys.

How much does a chapter of trad manga costs (materials)?

>>8065548You need to make your screentones and lines blend more naturally. The artificial, perfectly spaced dots conflict with your harsh, thick lines. One looks artificial, the other looks natural.Using Ben Day dots very heavily in otherwise minimalistic art is very reminiscent of British Pop Art from about a century ago, and I think this shit rocks but it works partially because of the mindful thickness of the lines. The lines are - even at their thinnest - several times wider than the dots, and the linework constantly varies in thickness across the piece, especially where multiple lines meet or where shadows gather. Meanwhile your work's lines are more-or-less the same all across the piece. This is probably why the background looks the best; cos it doesn't actually use any lines.
>>8065650Anon his tones look bad because he's drawing and applying tones at a small resolution. You're not supposed to actually be seeing each individual dot.And that pop-art trend was just blowing up comic art drawn by somebody else and calling it your own work. It was frankly flagrant plagiarism.

What i don't get, why do the nips look for foreigners who copies the anime style?Wouldn't it make much more sense to make the line up more diverse by hiring a western cartoonist with a distinct style?Wouldn't something like Batman or Hellboy make more sense. If you keep it black and white, you adapt the manga paneling, you decompress the story a little more and you produce a chapter per week. By working in black and white and using Japanese paneling style you could create a comic with much better action and dynamic you don't have in western comics. And it can be published in a mag and later on in big volumes.
>>8066222You're putting a bandaid over an axe wound, the problem is far bigger than just making it black and white, or decompressing a little.Black and white has basically nothing todo with the success of manga, infact it's a drawback. They do it because it's quicker and cheaper, and they've been doing it for so long that they don't really know how to do color at this point.Decompressing and manga style panelling is in the right direction... but I suspect you're not looking at it deep enough. If by decompressing you mean to just tell stories slower, showing more frames, and if by manga style panelling you just mean space the panels similarly and use speedlines, these are surface level details.Manga artists don't think about decompression, infact the pacing in manga is actually somewhat dynamic. Look at pic related, the pacing of this page is very compressed.Manga artists think like movie directors, or perhaps more precisely they think like directors for the animated medium that is manga. It moves in their head and they seek to communicate that motion most effectively onto the page. With that kind of approach, the pacing comes totally naturally and you never have to think about nonsense things like decompression.
>>8066121It's not bad. Anatomy is a little bit off. Your wall is paper thin or what?Too much texture, too noisy. Very complicated lighting as well, you would need references and even then im not sure, you hov to do it with screen tones.
>>8066222>>8066227contBut even still, you're still missing the bigger issue of comics. Why are you mentioning Batman and Hellboy? Bob Kane is dead and Mignola will soon join him. Nobody wants to read this stuff and nobody wants to write this stuff. Nobody walks into Shueisha wanting to make Slam Dunk. It's such a backwards way of thinking. Here's what comics needs to do.>Pic relatedThey need to set up a table at comic con or whatever, and just accept submission. Not portfolios, submissions.Specifically submissions of totally original work, made by whatever random artist just doing their own thing, no direction, just fully their own original idea. You think the editors at Shueisha are sitting down in a boardroom coming up with ideas like Bleach, One Piece, Dragonball, etc? You think they're putting out memos to all their artists saying "okay no more buff dudes, we're gonna push for younger protagonists from now on"? It's not how it works, and it wouldn't work. You can't create comics from the top down. All the best manga are the result of some individual with a vision, and their entire artistic life is built around that vision. This is unironically why Made in Abyss succeeds, because it's the artistic vision of one individual who has refined that vision so thoroughly that despite its weirdness and seeming contradictory elements, it just works. The day when comics decides to start operating like a regular ordinary publisher and not a production company is the day comics finally has a renaissance.
>>8066227>Black and white has basically nothing todo with the success of manga, infact it's a drawback. No, it's not, Rather planned or not, the manga format produces much more momentum. Overall, by shitting out a chapter every week but in regards to action as well. Colored manga looks much stiffer and wonky. If you try to pull of the manga schedule in color, you get a webtoon, which is the worst that ever happened to comics.Drawing 15 pages a month in color is more than double the amount of work. A magazine in color would be too expensive. 200 page volumes in color, would cost 20-30 bucks as well...>If by decompressing you mean to just tell stories slowerI looked at American action comics and it's always one hit, no impact is shown, the guy punching indicates a swing and the other guy flies away. No set up, no impact frames, nothing. Compare that to OPM.
>>8066230Batman was just an example, as it would work very well in black and white. You can submit your work to a western company all the time, per email, you don't even need to travel. But they don't have an infrastructure that produces momentum, you need a magazine and you need people willing to buy big, black and white volumes. And of course the elephant in the room is the whole American culture war. Normal people are not interested in producing woke propaganda and stuffing your story with whatever minorities Americans like the most at the moment.
>>8066230A note on editorsI remember a video of someone interviewing a few Marvel editors and asking them how they spot talent, and they had the totally wrong idea about how to do it.>"If you don't even know what india ink is, don't even talk to me, you're clearly not serious about comics"was roughly one of the quotes.Who the hell cares about india ink? I get what he's saying, if someone doesn't know common tools, it probably means they're a long way away from going pro, but it's really missing what's actually important in a potential applicant.Do they have vision? Pic related is Attack on Titan, specifically the original oneshot of it.It's not very good, the artist clearly doesn't know many industry standard techniques. But did the editor tell him to go away because he's clearly not pro? No, the editor stuck with him, and curated his growth, and 4 years later he produced Attack on Titan as we know it, and it sold over 150 million copies. The lack of art skills was irrelevant in the editor's assesment, anyone can learn to draw, but what he saw in this crappy oneshot was vision. The idea was interesting, and that's worth a hell of a lot more than art skills.A good comic or manga doesn't appear to you on a silver platter. The job of the editor needs to be someone who can see potential in an artist, and knows how to draw that potential out.
That is what American action always look like, they show the moment after the punch. Thats it.
>>8066222>why do the nips look for foreigners who copies the anime style? What? They aren't.>Wouldn't it make much more sense to make the line up more diverse by hiring a western cartoonist with a distinct style?Yes... Which is what they're doing... With japanese authors too...
>>8066231>black and whiteManga today is black and white simply by tradition. They've long since abandoned any pretense of drawing things with speed as the main motivation. Manga art today is beautiful and it takes a hell of a long time to make. The main characters of Demon Slayer have stupidly complicated designs.>decompressionYes but WHY is it like that? What is going through the artists head as they draw their pages? for both comics and manga. I've seen a bunch of videos of pro comic artists talking about their process, and they don't think in terms of animation at all, they pay attention to guiding the eye, but beyond that they think about cool poses. It's more illustration. And this is the real reason why comics are so compressed.Manga artists on the other hand think like animation directors, they imagine the action happening in their head, that's why manga reads so well. You have to totally change how you think about drawing a page, it's a fundamental shift much larger than the concept of compression/decompression>>8066235This page looks like this because it's not animated. It's an illustration, look at it from the thumbnail and you can see it has obviously been drawn with attention to its appeal as a poster and not a moment in time.
before i color, these 2 look right? making a short fanart comic for Merrivius
>>8066238contbasically there's manga which is dreamt up as animation, and comics which are dreamt up as illustrations. But it's really not two separate but valid ways to go about comics. The manga way is the only worthwhile approach. Drawing comics like illustrations is basically stupid and it's why nobody buys them.A comic IS animated, this is non negotiable. Events take place between panels, there is pacing, motion, dynamism, it moves. These images are not static, and if you do not draw them as moving, then you will be like a chef boiling the fries in water. If you draw like comics and not manga, you need to unlearn everything that you know and start from scratch.

>>8066260>They're not just looking for who can do the best impression of a japanese author y'know.Yes they do. Have you looked at the finnish girl? She has the most cookie cutter manga style one can imagine.Let's say Watchmen does not exist and you pitch that to a Japanese magazine:No little girls, no waifus, no giant robots, no cringe humor, no giant eyes. DECLINED
I don't think the Japanese are really interested in western storytelling. All they want is seeing someone white, drawing Japanese manga. Even if it's bad, it shows them, that Japanese culture strong or something like that.
>>8066269Peepochoo and Mingo would like a word. You are ignorant of the medium and of the industry. There are swathes of manga that don't fit your description of manga, but you are ignorant to them.
>>8066239Her face is alright for a westoid. There's some mild yaw problems, the streetwalker lips could migrate a bit to the left and the schnozz a bit to the right. But that body, jumalauta, it's like that inceasingly poorly drawn horse meme. Madre de dios what ere you thinking?
My biggest problem is i prefer the original manga format. Fast, black and white. But it is this way becous the whole manga pipeline exists. I don’t care if it was done this way to print cheaper. I can pirate every comic in existence and i still prefer black and white manga over everything else. But as a westoid the only realistic way to release manga is online, so i do not profit from the cheaper printing costs.Drawing colored comics or webtoons would make more sense for someone who publishes online. Getting an publishing deal for a colored comics in america or europe is more realistic as well.Making smartphone-slop, colored and vertical hightens your chances to get some traction online among the younger readership. So i feel like a stupid weeb by choosing the hardest route for success.American comic makes more sense, european comic makes more sense, online webtoon makes more sense. All that makes significantly more sense for me as a pooreupean rather than larping as a mangaka. The worst part is, i‘m not even a real weeb. I cant even read katakana, im not really that interested in Japanese culture anymore.I prefer studying western art, like the French Academic period, i prefer western literature. I like Greek mythology much more than Japanese ghosts or whatever.I hate modern westoid culture but otherwise i habe a strong connection Europe. So it makes even less sense for me to draw Japanese centered storys.I feel like a girl who could find a nice guy, start a family and live happily after. But insdted she sabotages herself by being obsessed with some Korean boy group member.
>>8066276Whats wrong with it? I knew it wasnt perfect anatomically, but the people I showed it to all said it looked good and didnt have any critiques, so I figured it was good enough
>>8066283also yeah the left leg is the main thing jumping out which i was gonna redo, probably fucked it cause the pose i stole i couldnt see that leg

you can't discussing anything here anymore because ten nodraws will counter anything you say by bringing up one isolated exception that is either an industry planet or a once in a lifetime hit and say you're completely wrong because of it.
>>8066306What do you mean? The stats show that China and Koreas slop grows way faster. White people get less and less relevant.Western and Japanese comic market will remain for a while, of course, but it will shrink further and further.I'm not crabbing around or try to demoralize anyone. It's just reality. There are millions of people who could easily read pirated manga for free, but they actually prefer webtoon-slop.
I bought ex, is there a tutorial that explains the quadrillion of options regarding manga formats?
>>8066310>people
>>8066313Yeah, come on. Assuming you are actually 100% white. It's over. I live in a country that still has an economical stance better than most, but it's going downhill for over 20 years now.Riding a dead horse is a disgusting feeling, let me say you that.
>>8066311there are videos explaining it, but the short of it is you can set margins and have your panel snap to them to help you keep things sized correctly.
>>8066310I have never seen an actual person discuss webtoons or have some sort of fanbase I'm guessing all those views are botted to shit
>>8066321The ones i found were very surface level.
>>8066329the csp site has a good text tutorial I think.
>>8066307Yes anon, everybody who disagrees with you is a nodraw.
>>8066254>hating fan service>hating "super cliche" scenesBecause Manhwa or their corresponding live action Kdramas don't have any of this........? What rock does this guy live under?
>>8066369people who complain about cliches are mainly talking about anime, and they just pretend they read manga. Think of the average zoomer, they can't even get through an email without hyperventilating and zoning out, they're not fucking reading actual manga unless its so popular that they NEED to in order to keep up with their peers. If a manga had cliches, it would be evident in chapter 1, and you'd just stop reading it. Most manga isn't even close to the stereotypical kawaii schoolgirl antics you see in popular anime.
How can I make this a spread page in print ver?
>>8066377I searched and as far is i understand csp ex is the only professional software to format comics and manga. Double spreads, multipage managment, pdf export and so on. Had to buy it myself.Otherwise do you have a tamplate for single pages? Cut it and insert the halfs into single page docs.>>8066333That's quite good, thx.
I wish I had sfw stuff to share but porn is all I've been doing. I start doing a tax prep job in January so I'm plowing through my commission queue. I'm shooting to bring devils moon back in December.
>>8066377Best bet is to make a small split in the drawing down the middle, where the spine of the book is. Ideally that gap will be hidden in the spine, saving the rest of the drawing from being hidden.
>>8066377What I did for my book was>Open CSP>Open the page template I used>Import my drawing as a new layer(scale it as needed to work within the bleeding area)>Center the drawing properly>Now move the image around so you get your desired left page(the rest of your image should be offscreen outside of the bleed area)>Save that as one page>Then move the image again so your right page fits in your template, keeping in mind where you cut off the left page>Save that as a new separate fileThats about it, and you make slight adjustments as needed. Also use the Shift key when moving the image so when you move the image it gets locked to just moving left or right as to not risk the image being off center. Also if you plan to print this as an actual book you could get away with splitting the image just ever so slightly and have some white space, but ideally you would plan the actual drawing ahead of time and even plan stretching out the middle of your drawing to account for the spine warping the pages.
>2020+6>manga is still in black and whiteJa, no wonder webtoon is way more popular among average joes.Japan needs to stop being so anal about tradition and embrace globalization.
>>8066377>>8066580So for example like this
>>8066592Then shift the image to the sideHowever as I was making your example I noticed that your drawings dont fit the dimensions of at least the standard Kadakowa preset for standard manga. Is this traditional? Did you draw this on the same paper as opposed to two actual separate pages split together?Like I got those black lines that I drew that represent the bleed area and notice that the girl gets cut off too much and that shouldnt be the case if this was drawn on two actual pages taped together and/or you did the math on what dimensions your drawings should be before you put pen to paper. For suggestions on how to do a quick fix for the sake of scaling you can do what anon suggested >>8066576 and make a gap in your image after stretching it, but I believe the girl may still be cut off so consider for this page making a decorative border so you dont have to stretch the drawing that much in the first place. Those are band-aid solutions but better then warping the image entirely
Alright laundry leeetss gooo
>>8066600Also keep in my mind that I am also unaware what it is intended to be cropped or cut, so I could be wrong on where I decided to stretch the image to, so dont take my example as complete gospel.
>>8066580>>8066592>>8066600Thanks guys. I drew in one single page then scanned. Actually I never measure properly the screen dimension and just go with the flow lol. Although I really should for the sake of everything being with the same proportions. I followed the suggestion and print a test to see. I guess it will work enough
>>8066655Yeah you about get it, although hopefully this page is a good ways in(I suppose 20 pages or more) so that the spine can really hide the gaps/stretching in the middle.
>>8066655Have you printed it on a a4 sheet with your home printer? In that case printing without a gap would have been better. At least you should have filled the gap black.
>>8066254why listen to this random guy? he probably things a lot of majorly successful works are "cliche"
What is the contemporary shonen meta? Is it still the humans negative emotions manifest demons into existence , there is a demon hunter org, mc becomes half demon and joins the org?
>>8066774Mostly demon hunters in modern day Japan.MC is either a half-demon, has an ancient demon sealed inside of him, or someone in his family was killed by demons. He reluctantly joins the demon hunters because they have a vague lead on his powers/demon sealed inside of him/the one who killed his family.
>>8066776Yeah. It was done so much, it is hard to come up with a twist.Setting the story in the West would change it up at least a little. I googled „something is killing the children“ is supposed to be an American version ofbthis meta plot. Will try to look into it.What i always thought about since i was young and read Naruto, that it would be a cool if the demon ACTUALLY turned the host evil.P.S. lol my ip range is now banned as well
>1st page>180 rule brokenAre people drawing comics retarded?
>>8066788>180 rule brokenNo it isn't.
>>8066791>can't spot the 180 rule breakAre people not drawing comics retarded?
Because you are a no-draw, got it?
They think like illustrators. You would have red hair on the left, the black hair on the right. That's wrong if you balance a composition of an illustration. So they sacrifice flow and spatial clarity to make the illustration better. You should find better camera angels and do better paneling. Breaking the 180 rule isn't the way to go.P.S. speech bubbles that goes A B A (with a tail connecting the two A's) in one panel is the pure cancer. I don't think i've ever seen that in a manga.
Most pages follow the paneling style of modern manga, more or less. And than randomly he trows in a French book style double spread for some reason. I suppose Americans think that's clever?
>>8066788did you just learn a new concept and now you feel smart
>>8066788>>8066809I've made this rant before butWho draws like this!?Take away everything else, the story, the panelling, the comic, just look at the drawings as drawings... who's art is this?I follow hundreds of artists on twitter, and nobody draws like this. Nobody even attempts to draw like this. How does this even come about? What series of events in an artist's life leads them to drawing these pictures? Even if they're a total amateur... total amateurs don't draw like this! It's a matter of choices, and I've never seen a single artist who willingly draws like this.Mnaga makes sense, it's simple, it's just the dude's art style, whether they're drawing a manga or just a doodle, this is how they draw. But what do these comic artists draw like when they're not making comics? Do they even draw at all? It's such an aberration.
And than an old school grid.Out of nowhere, it's just a page in the middle of a scene, he decided to draw a 9-grid.
>>8066816It's very old, dude.I read a comic, i feel the reading flow is bad, i analyze why, most of the time it's the 180 rule.
>>8066818one possible argument is that these characters are not the kind of characters the artist wants to draw. They're just ordinary people, so it's difficult to give them a unique look, you had to design them quickly and they have to look normal. But this is moreso just a skill issue, and furthermore may actually be indicative of a lack of artistic vision on the artist's part.Pic related is Shinozaki kun, just a random manga I picked for this, it's not significant. On the left are main characters, and on the right are side characters and totally throwaway one-off background characters, mangaka call these mob characters. In virtually every interview I've seen of a mangaka, when asked the question>"what do you wish you had been better prepared for when getting serialised?"The answer is always>"I wish I had better skills to come up with one-off characters"or>"I wish I had prepared a larger supply of one-off characters to use"It is simply a fact of the medium that unless you're drawing a story of people trapped on a desert island, you're going to have to draw alot of one-off characters, either villains of the week or just people in the background. It's in your interest to get good at drawing even the most mundane of figures. An artist with a very refined style can usually do this easily, they have a sort of unwritten formula to making their characters so they always fit in to the world and look appealing. If your background characters look like generic loomis heads, you need to sit down and start figuring out a way to make them more interesting.
>>8066823contIt's very easy to fall into the habit of halfassing the things in comics that seem unimportant. Things like background characters of the background itself, the random clothes people wear, a car driving past, a tree in the background, etc.But if you instead get into habit of routinely referencing real actual places and things, and putting even the tiniest bit of thought into them, it will make the world in your comic feel much more alive.
>>8066818I‘m not always a fan of giant eyed mamga as well. It has it’s downsides.Postmodernism is about ugliness, most leftist think drawing people ugly is progressive. It’s a thing for decades in games. They have special wokness consulting companies who tells them to make people ugly, black and gay. Google sweet baby inc. if you not aware. Comic companys will habe such commissars as well.It is already established that the two boys are gay with each other, so it makes sense.
>>8066826For example, lets say you draw a character holding a washing basket. You know what a washing basket is right, it's just a basket with holes in it, you can draw that from imagination right? You could... but a far better option would be to actually look for a picture of a real washing basket and copy that. It's the odd little idiosyncrasies in its design that make it just that much more interesting than what you would have come up with yourself. It will feel real to your readers because it is real. There's a quote from Stanley Kubrick about this sort of thing in filmmaking. If he needs a prop, he gets a real prop rather than just having the prop makers create something. A chair is a real chair, a car is a real car.If your work is not tied to reality, you have to do a bit more thinking, but you should make an effort to make even the most mundane of things in your world feel real. For background characters, a good approach is to just go to google streetview and pick a random person off the street, copy their outfit, tweak it a little to make it work if you need to.
>>8066831Ironically anime/manga actually succeeds well in this aspect as a result of their arguably lazy technique of referencing real life locations for manga.I'm sure some of them acknowledge the effect it has of making a location feel real and lived in, but I'm pretty sure the majority just do it because it's easier than coming up with a background from imagination.
>>8066826The last shot of the arc is a bad examle. From that angle and with that level of rendering it’s unclear what it is.A school that’s too specific isn’t good eighter. Often you need a Platonic school to keep the flow. At least you need an eye for composition to make the school more iconic. Most of the time people have problems with drawing lived in places. Drawing a table covored with random stuff is very hard. It can look uncanny very easily.
Its second page and it directly catched my eye.4 controllers in a line, 3 empty bowls, no water, no glasses... the scene immediately feels uncanny. Your brain just knows that's not what a living room looks like, after a gaming session.
>>8066848
hey it's the nodraw essay poster
>>8066848Yeah I agree, it strikes me as a background drawn from imagination and without much thought.Pic related is a much more natural looking room. It's not a western room so it's not an easy comparisan, but just look at the unique details that almost certainly were referenced from real world examples. It just feels real.
>>8066851
>>8066804I've drawn a lot of comics. Not everybody who disagrees with you is a nodraw.
>>8066831the master advice from legendary directors and artists:when you need a chair.... use.....wait for it.................. a real chair. Use a real reference to set it the story in a time period.Crazy that this needs to be said but I guess people who go to film/art school need every piece of advice they can get.
>>8066893It means don't draw this
>>8066323CorrectNobody real reads that garbage, it's all an investment scam, just like AI
>>8066823How would you rate the design of this one off character?RIP ODB
You guessed it, a title drop. I stood up from my desk and started clapping.>>8066916Does somebody actually read the American slop?
>>8066923this comic reads like they're embarassed they have to make a comic instead of a movie like a real grown up. It doesnt look bad per se, its just got zero dynamism.
>>8066925>Does somebody actually read the American slop?Looks like you are, muchacho.
what is this bookclub shit. post your manga or shut up
>>8066826>>8066831Unironically good advice. When it comes to ordinary objects, I have the habit of just coming up with things on my own and the result always looks lazier than if I had just traced or copied the real thing.
>>8066936Whether you like it or not, the fact is that pretty much all of us here in the west are miles away from the level of understanding of this medium that is possessed by pros in Japan, and it's not a mileage issue. To criticize any study of the medium as a waste of time is foolish. You can draw comics badly for your entire life, hours put in does not guarantee improvement. We are like Africans trying to build helicopters.Study must be encouraged of all aspects of the medium, we have a lot to learn.
hey guys!!! i'm back!! to review geoff johns green lantern!!! this comic sucks my balls. the only word to describe the assness of this ass comic is mega ass. I couldn't imagine reading this westoid trash unironically. far inferior to the classics coming from the eastern literary canon like Boruto: true blue vortex, and Konosuba: The Manga adaptation. But I'm digressing a little bit, lets take a real lo....OH GOD fucking kill me. ARE YOU SEEING THIS. this comic breaks the 180 rule on the FIRST PAGE. you know, the iconic 180 rule. set in stone in 1829. which clearly states "you must have 180 green lanterns on all pages" but as you can clearly see. only one green lantern. false advertising if you ask me. speaking of advertising, this is another problem with comics, all the fucking ads! absolute batman omnibus? absolute shit! dick tracy complete series? oh that's rich, that's a comic straight out of the news papers. good luck fitting that in your house, there's probably 50 fucking books for the first decade alone. the only way you'll see a review of that is if batcave.biz finally gets off their ass and uploads it I'm not buying that fecal fuck fest.>>8066944Study my ass bud. these are incomplete, juvenile thoughts. D Minus effort.
>>8066932Book that as scientific interest, in my case, gringo.>>8066930Yes, it want's to be a Netflix show, not a good one, but i think it's not impossible that Netflix actually buys the rights.Typical small American town setting, reminds me a lot of Weapons, but worse. Or Stranger things of course.>>8066944>all of us here in the west are miles away from the level of understanding of this medium that is possessed by pros in JapanI know the 180 rule, 98% of mangaka don't.I have even seen Tarkovsky movies...
>>8066945Nah, i'm more of the fat, boring dude with metallica t-shirts from his videos.
Here is your sexy, blonde heroine, little Johnny, have fun.
>>8066951And where is your manga?
>>8066923sometimes I see characters like that half red hair chick with the lip piercing and realize just how out of touch I am with society. Did they design her to sincerely look cool and don't think she is a joke? Same with with that guy and his paltry cornrows.
>>8067026Modern (American) artists don't want 'cool', because that's too pedestrian for them. Cool is childish and immature and silly. The artsy choice is "realistic" mediocrity, asymmetry and outright ugliness. That makes you deep and thoughtful and means you can be taken seriously as an artist.Similar to how pretty landscapes and pretty people were dismissed by the moderns as "kitsch" and not to be considered actual art anymore way back in the 19th.
Anyone know a good font or brush for musical notes? Something that shows it's really loud and imposing, but not terrible noise. Otherwise I'd just have to handdraw them like this
>>8067055And what do you think about it, gringo?
>>8067091>anon has a stroke
>>8066497This is pretty good for porn, crazy work anon. Good luck with the return, it sounds like your soul needs it.
What is it with you American and your incapability to draw attractive people?Picrel.Same realistic art style and yet the left one is so ugly while the right is much more pleasant to look at.
>>8066944>pretty much all of us here in the west are miles away from the level of understanding of this medium that is possessed by pros in Japan, and it's not a mileage issueSpoken like somebody with no fucking mileage. Speak for yourself.
>>8066323webtoons are primarily read by koreaboo tumblr-type women or teenage boys who want to read a generic shonen with a black protagonist.
>>8066818>>8066823If we're talking about more realistic artstyles I think you should use better examples than those cartoonish manga.
>>8067264This is just as cartoonish but with big noses and small eyes.
>>806722480% of the ugliness is the color.
>>8067274The proportions and the rigidity of them are not cartoonish. Simplified and cartoonish is not the same, retard.
Yesterday after reading Something is killed the children i got back to Chainsaw Man. Volume 9 was really good, from the appearing of the darkness demon, the quality got significant up.What a contrast between those two.
The problem with colored comics is, that color seen as an afterthought. But if you want a proper rendered comic with cool color and interesting lighting, with material rendering and so on. The line work takes you 10% of time, 90% is rendering.Or you rely on your lines and blacks and just use flat washes to introduce color. Like Hellboy. So you rather do flat wash or full rendering. Everything in between is complicated. Complicated as you would have to subordinate every step of the process to coloring. The colorist would say what every one else supposed to do, but that's not how it's done. It's the opposite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWvqd9y6ltU
>>8067380have you ever read anything by french people trying imitate manga? they are the best westerners at doing it IMHO.
>>8067375Why so upset?
>>8067401I dislike something is killing the children not for its disability to copy manga. It just has the quality of a mid Netflix series. If it could reach a level of breaking bad, for example, i would not mind it not being manga at all.I looked into French manga a little bit, have not read anything, though. It looked boring. It looked like a random shonen slop. What's even the point?Urasawa mixes manga with something like a French graphic novel. And it's very interesting. Or JoJo has a western look as well.I mean it have been done from the other side as well. JoJo could be a western comic inspired by manga.Maybe i just don't know about it, but i've never seen a French cartoonist really combine the two worlds. In this day and age, i would not read a mid shonen drawn by a Japanese. What for? The same mid shonen but with a French name on it, does nothing for me.
>>8067417>Why so upset?I'm not.
>>8067420Well, you started throwing names real quick.Urusawa's work IS cartooning, and I'm simply saying it isn't any more realistic than the images in the post you were quoting. They're just different kinds of cartoons.
>>8067422>and I'm simply saying it isn't any more realistic than the images in the post you were quotingYes it is.
>>8066257I REALLY need that for my manga.
To have a little bit more working space on a a4 sheet, i want to expand the "active are" to the edge of the paper. Is there a name for it? I try to find the exact measurements for it.
>>8067433

Japanese dip nibs are pricey in Europe. I draw on a small format so i need very fine nibs. Is there something from Europa or China that’s as good as Japanese nibs?I tried Blue Pumpkin i think the name was, its cheap, works fine, but too thick and soft for small format. Otherwise European nibs i see are most of the time broad to write calligraphy with.Inb4: use fineliners. I don’t like them at all for manga
>>8067503Even Japanese nibs are not what they used to be.A few Japanese artists now routinely ask people to give them old nibs if they have them, and try to stock up on as many as they can so they never have to use new lower quality nibs. Some have hundreds of them, hoping they'll last them to the end of their life. It's that big of an isue apparently
>>8067534Lool, is there a single aspect of life that’s not getting worse?I have a couple older ones. But I definitely need to buy new ones.I found Brauser, from Germany, i bet they are unusable, as everything made in Germany is a giant scam, not really cheap as well. Chinese have a lot of very good stuff, but they keep it all for themselves. I bet if you know a Chinese guy who knows a guy he could show you the good stuff. But it’s really hard to get something decent from there without the language. Are all Japanese brands fucked? I wanted to test out Tachkawa Sanji nibs, Deleter Sanji are too broad for my taste.
>Have to be away from home for a week>Take my drawing stuff with me just in case I can get some in>Can't end up doing any of it without breaking my back in half because of the shitty furniture at the place I stayed at>Come home>Find I've left my only drawing penI JUST WANNA COMIC
>>8067534I looked into it. Supposedly they changed the formula and made the Zebra g-nibs stiffer. There are 2 producer, and 3 brands. Tachikawa are the stiffest, Nikko are a little bit softer and Zebra are the softest. Back in the day Zebras were even softer but wore out fast. So the made them a little bit stiffer and coated with chrom. This made them last longer but old school folks miss the ultra soft setting and the new coating repel the ink so the nibs skips a lot.Tachikawa suppose to be the same, but they were always stiffer. So as far as i understand it's not like the modern nibs are crooked, misaligned and of bad quality (like the western brands are) but you can't buy a soft g-nib as you used to.I suppose the mangaka you are talking about are hording those old Zabras.Yeah, not quite sure how relevant that is for me, as i work on A4. Do you need that much of a flex on a A4 sheet?
