HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO DRAW THIS AS ACCURATELY AS POSSIBLE HELP

your forgetting most shadows. you dont compare angles enough. youre not aware of the negative and whitespace as form, further helping you measure. doing it right takes time. when it clicks it will click and everytime will be exhausting and requires your attention

focus on what was wrong, keep that in mind and try to get it right the next time. you're lucky if it's 1% better each cycle. just trust the process. stop whining so much and draw way more.

You shouldn't worry about being 100% accurate, strive for 80-90% accuracy. What you're doing now isn't bad, I like the angles you've drawn for the clavicles, torso, hips and knees, and your proportions for the first drawing is good.

You can practice accuracy by any number of methods. You can trace the image, then redraw without tracing, overlay to see your mistakes and repeat the process until you're satisfied.
You can use a grid method, measure lines and proportions of the body parts compared to each other
You can block in shapes, use negative space to see the proportions measured ect

    >>8050643
It's not a one and done deal. This is something that takes years to get good at.

Screw your eyes. Scoop them out with a spoon. That's when you unlock your mind's eye and level up from beg.
    >>
    >>8050701
its pretty obvious from how you draw hips that youre drawing what you expect to see rather than whats actually there
    >>
    >>8050648
You should follow your own advice because this is like 60% accurate at most. The proportions are horrid.
    >>
    >>8050701
you need to train your eye, thats the why to do it. practice practice.

    >>8050709
this is always a good thing to be aware of - to make sure you are really looking.

the point of a "basic lay in" is to work and refne it

you can try being more of a 'render dude' and get a super light pencil, doof around with the layin then hit it dark like they do.

    >Peril's blog is on 4chan, he has a general on Oekaki
THANKS FIGURE ANON!!! That was solid advice actually. I really believe that too, just go for it and let your skill naturally achieve accuracy naturally. You can't force that by artificial means, it has to be a "biological adaptation" to a constant habit.
About my thread on /i/, it reached the image and reply limit and got archived a couple months ago. There's a site (archived.moe), that I believe it keeps /i/ threads archived (warosu doesn't keep /i/ archives). I didn't check that, but in case anon >>8050627 wants to check it on archived.moe the /i/ thread number was 824791.

    >>8050692
    >funny, never thought of using an actual ruler. im an old school pencil/brush guy.
Well, in that drawing the artist is holding a pencil with marks as in a ruler, but the idea is the same, yes.

His is just referencing the pose. You will notice that the /int/s on /beg/ only loosely follow the reference. That's when I started to stop worrying about accuracy.

But maybe that's the dark side of art, wanting quick results.

    >>8050604
My attempt, didn't yet overlay. Will draw the other refs you used tonight. Your attempts seem pretty accurate to me, but maybe my standards are too low, maybe I have grown to comfortable... old concept art /ic/ would laugh at every thread we currently have
    >>
    >>8050739
Now as I post it I see some errors... from observer's side right boob needs to be repositioned and resized and also the right leg, that is thinner than the other... which would require the hips to be wider. Middle torso slightly squished. Hm.

    NO.

we stuck around this long and want fucking satisfaction. You WILL keep posting and you WILL improve.
    >>
    >>8050604
Whatever improve or specific advice you get from this won't be enough. You might improve with this one but if the foundation doesn't improve it won't mean much.

You need to actually train your brain. Hand eye coordination and visual reasoning. That's the element of neuroplasticity and it takes the average person ~8 weeks of consistent effort to meaningfully cement change. You need sleep, hydration, minimal stress, joy, and in person socialisation.

And when you come to actually train, do the following with a sample of references:

    1) Memorise a figure

    2) Remove the figure from view and draw the figure from memory

    3) Compare your drawing to the reference and correct. It's actually important that you do corrections.

    4) Repeat this 2 - 3 times a day, as spread out as you can manage, with time to rest your attention and focus on something else for a while. You can't just cram it all at once.

You need a degree of self awareness and well reasoned directed focus. Be aware of how you observe and capture the details mentally and dexterously, predict how your focus or technique will improve and assess if your prediction is true.

Who gives a fuck about this one particular reference? You're an artist, you need to get better at being an artist, not Reference X Model Y Image Z.
    >>
Also, you need at least two good shits a day and maybe a hamburger.
    >>
    >>8051642
    >1) Memorise a figure
just by looking at it? or drawing it first? isnt that impossible if you're inaccurate?

    Keep drawing, anon.

Keep doing this over and over and over and over again.
You're creating a puzzle every drawing that relates to the giant puzzle of your art in general.

Get a 100 page sketchbook and do these over and over and over.
Then follow the anon's advice, by staring at the reference for about a minute or two. Draw from memory as best you can. Then go back and make serious corrections.

That'll train your eye and memory. Don't ever look at this type of work as boring. Ask yourself questions every single drawing with every single line you're making.

I expect to see your growth.

I think your accuracy is already pretty good and mogs mine.
But what I noticed is that those /int/s don't actually go for accuracy. They just use the pose as inspiration for relative positioning. I wonder how well /int/s are at accuracy after they start working faster and more free. Do they still grind accuracy as a warm-up?

It's a very pretty girl and I have fun drawing her, but I do struggle to actually match what I see.

Pic related are a bit faster sketches than

    >>8050604
    >>8052024
while I am absolutely nowhere near good at accuracy, I have made leaps and bounds at it. The specific exercise I do is basically trying to copy a reference image as best as I can, and then overlaying my sketch on top of the reference. Then I'll try it again, and again, and then I'll move onto another reference image once I get tired of drawing that first one over and over again, overlaying it again and again.

I mostly do this with cartoons and anime screenshots, which is why my style is cartoony, but i intend on doing it with realistic art too. My goal is to one day paint portraits of my friends that actually look real

Thanks anon! but, that would cause me too much anxiety. I try to avoid stressing, and social media, produces a lot f that. I don't want random stalkers or haters when I don't need that. This place has some pretty fair rules, you can do your autistic shit, but do it here, in this containment schizo ward. No one will judge you in this place, Where should I post my shit? You can't even write, torture, or "grape" in any platform anymore, or even suggest something non-consensual, Pixiv wants you to censor your shit, ultimately I only trust this site, and I don't even need a mail anymore. This is the last free speech corner on the world wide web. It's too comfy here to switch to the social meat grinder out there. That's not for me at least for now

    >>8053331
    >Have you considered doing that yourself?
    Nah.

LMAO, but seriously, I obviously did this when I wanted to draw shit for real, now I gone digital and I don't care anymore about any "golden rules of classic art", I want to do my weird shit in my shitty corner and have fun with the weirdos who are into any of the random shit I doodle
BUT, one day someone will put you on the spot, and he/she will tell you "can you draw me? like for real, just my face or just me", and you may be in that spot telling yourself: oh fuck, how was this shit again? For real...? And maybe using some measurement method to transfer basic scale and proportion can save your day. I know the pencil thing works obviously, maybe you're not that good at faces but at least you wont draw a down syndrome face, or some Beavis and Butthead shit

Now for digital, you have a million ways to transfer scale and proportion. The krenz thing is pretty good actually, that's basically what you end up doing in your head but without the gimmicky "geometric shape frame". You look for reference points, "naked eye" style and build the thing. Krenz method is preferable to do that with much more precision

I think the grid system is the best, the Krenz system is useful when you don't have any tools at all to assist you. It's not bullshit of course, but it requires a lot of training to use it right. It can be quite inaccurate if you get tangled in it. You basically build patterns and geometrical reference points connecting the whole figure.

I have a few Morpho books. I studied it very little. I mostly copied some Bridgies and did trial and error by daily drawing. I should do some Morpho again. I think the books are good. I also have 2 toshi books in the backlog. They seemed a bit too advanced for me to copy, but I'll try.

yeah, the planets don't lock me into a single creature type, too
    >I think the grid system is the best, the Krenz system is useful when you don't have any tools at all to assist you
Interesting. When I copy I think a bit in a Krenz-like way. Looking for white spaces and relationships between things (though obviously I don't hit them very well). I find it more natural to do without actually having to draw a grid or lines. If one decided to actually draw the helper lines instead of imagining them, I guess the grid works better. The grid and its relations within are a bit harder to "project" without actually drawing it.

    >>8053443
this just wouldn't work in life drawing unless you set up some doohickey on your drawing board. But as we see here it works quite well if we copy from a photograph.

This is the classical sight sizing, with emphasis on triangulation rather than measurement grids, in conjunction with gesture and construction.
I cannot overstate how important triangulation is in a live-drawing situation compared to griding. Triangulation allows you to keep proportions at any scale.
    >>8055355
These are theories I've shared many times throughout years, stuff people refuse to believe until they see them in an asian book, with step by steps and video recordings. You don't need to pay money to learn art. You need to pay for it in sweat and tears. Just ignore the noise and draw.

Triangulation is just picking 2 landmarks and drawing a triangle to find the third point? And you start big then break it up into smaller and smaller shapes?

    >>8055368
    >Triangulation is just picking 2 landmarks and drawing a triangle to find the third point? And you start big then break it up into smaller and smaller shapes?

NTA but basically, Yeah. Find 2 points that you're more confident in to find the third point and work big to small over and over until you have something you like. Usually you hold out the pencil to estimate the angle in life drawing. It's a tedious process but it gives you better results. It's kind of like sudoku as well if you really think about it.
    >>
    >>8055469
sounds like just doing negative shapes
why do we need new words for shit all the time?
    >>
    >>8055472
    >negative shapes

It's more like a cousin to negative shapes. Lets say you have the top of the fore head and the chin and wanted to find the corner of the eye, you can use trianglation based on those 2 points to find the eye with more precision than relying on something like Reilly rhythms or what ever standard method you use, it really helps for accuracy.

It's just an example and I'd use the nose to more accurately measure- but I feel it's more simplistic to explain it with the forehead and chin because it's more of a straight line than nose to tearduct. Enveloping, plumblines and triangulation are all great tools to get accuracy without measuring much
    >>
    >>8055477
    fair enough
    >>
    >>8055368
    >Triangulation is just picking 2 landmarks and drawing a triangle to find the third point?
Not necessarily landmarks, but that is the idea. We use triangulation instead of measurements because scaling measurements is difficult. Angles will give you the right proportions - this is why we have an entire field of math dedicated to this - and that's what you should care about.
The most important things to get right first is height and width of the entire subject. Here is what you might do in a life drawing situation, i.e. you have a figure right in front of you, and you have your paper on an easel.
    1. Draw line 1 on your paper. Some people might call this a plumb line. I just think of it as the first side of the bounding box. This line demarcates the widest point on the left side of the figure, i.e. her right elbow.
    2. Draw line 2 on your paper. It represents the base of the foot of the figure. The placement on the paper is arbitrary. You decide how big you want your drawing to be.
    3. Now hold your pencil (or paintbrush, or a stick) up to the figure vertically and move it next to the widest point on the opposite side of your bounding box. In this case, it's her left hip.
    4. Move your hand down so that the grip you have on your pencil is on that lower right hand corner. Using that point as a fulcrum, tilt the pencil until it is aimed at where the top left corner should be. This gives you the angle of line 3.
    5. Hold your hand still, turn your body towards the paper, and replicate that line. If you are not using an easel, then ghost the line a few times, then draw it on your paper, relying on muscle memory rather than visual judgement alone.
    6. Now you can draw lines 4 and 5 and complete the bounding box. From there, you find a few other major lines and points, such as the tilt of the shoulders and where the crotch should be.
    >>
    >>8055563
    (continued)
    7. This gives you a rough idea of where things belong. Instead of doing more abstract measurements, this is where you start employing your gestural and construction knowledge. Fit your figure within the confines of the bounding box and points you've laid out. Start looking at the model as a 3d figure, and use visual cues to inform your construction. For example, we know her face is tilted slightly to camera right because of the relationship of her eyes and nose, and the fact we see more of her right ear than we do of her left. We know her face is tilted up, because of the relationship of the ears to her eyes, and because we see a little bit more of her bottom chin and her nostrils. We know her chest is point to camera right because her left breast overlaps her left arm. We know most of her body weight is on her left leg, because it is locked straight, while her right leg is the balancing leg, because it is bent at the knee.
    8. Internal logic of your drawing is more important than doing a pixel perfect copy of the photo. Stop overlaying your drawing over the photo. That is an idiotic way to judge the drawing, and even if you get it very close, crabs will claim you merely traced it. Stop doing all of that, and judge the drawing on its own. Some measurements will be off. This is where your knowledge takes over and make things correct in that new context.

accurate means accurate, my brother. Time to put down the Vilppu koolaid...
    >>
    >>8059295
I have never studied Vilppu. Accurate sounds like an objective standard, but accurate in relation to what? Proportional accuracy?
    Opptical accuracy?
    anatomical accuracy?
    perceptual accuracy?
    expressive accuracy?

These aren't necessarily mutually exclusive, but neither are they the same goal.
Your intention determines what accounts as succes, and your succes might not look like a succes to another one.

You can look at the same model and draw a diffrent truth, feel and expression.

Vilppu would propably draw it another way than Huston or Mattesi. Or academic style...

There simply is not one way to produce "accurate" as possible...

Often when you draw something how it feels it can feel more "correct" than just plainly copying it exactly. Heres perfect examples when people just traced over. It just feels dead and lifeless. Nothing to state, no opinion, no flavour, no spazaz. No hierarchy of ideas or thoughts. No exaggeration, no poetry.

Well thats the obvious diffrence between a beg and a pro...begs want to copy, pros want to interpret.

    >>
    >>8059392
    >Opptical accuracy?
    >anatomical accuracy?
    >perceptual accuracy?

    What's the difference between those?
Well I guess in the case of anatomical accuracy you could draw a completely different person who is sill anatomically correct and for optical you might mean the curvature of a lens...

But that's really grasping for anything to try to misunderstand what the person meant.

    >>
    >>8060557
    >Opptical accuracy?
    >>anatomical accuracy?
    >>perceptual accuracy?
Optical accuracy is about reproducing the visual information that reaches your eye.
You observe the subject from a particular viewpoint and represent how it actually appears from that position. Perspective and foreshortening

    Light, shadow and value relationships
    Apparent shapes, proportions and angles
    Overlapping forms and spatial relationships

Anatomical accuracy is about correctly representing the underlying physical structure of a subject.
In figure drawing, this means understanding how the skeleton, muscles, joints and proportions work together etc

Perceptual accuracy is about capturing the way you experience and understand the subject visually.
It goes beyond copying isolated measurements. It concerns the relationships that make something read correctly to a viewer: its character, weight, expression, spatial presence and visual identity.
For example, imagine drawing a person's face.
You could measure every feature carefully, yet the portrait might fail to capture the person's expression or likeness. Another drawing might exaggerate the nose, compress the eyes or distort the proportions, yet somehow capture the person far more convincingly.
That second drawing might have greater perceptual accuracy, even though it has less literal optical or anatomical accuracy...

Theres your answer beg...now get back to drawing like a good little boy. And take what you learned and put it to good use...
