Yes it is a scam. Why would you pay 2k to learn from a mid to high beg youtube grifter. This retard can hardly draw himself or apply anything he tries to teach (which is all just exercises he copied from Han, KJG, etc) with consistency. I'm just about at the point that if someone's art goal is to "draw like Kim Jung Gi" I'm just assuming their mentally an NFT crypto retard. They never show any of their own tastes, just endless people with animal heads in a fish eye lens. It's almost like these people just see art as a circus trick to perform for normies, "look at he craaaaazy stuff I draw without even having a reference" and it's just like, a guy with really big pants in space.

It's playing the wrong game. Most likely he isn't really making good sales with that course but there's a non Zero chance that he would. Clearly they understand something you don't. Most people don't care about learning as much as they do just having someone personable teach them things.

The people who want quality education and are actively grinding in a tryhard fashion, by definition, are part of an extremely small minority and don't watch videos like this. The 100,000 people that like his videos, are part of the majority, that don't care much about anything at more than a hobbyist/superficial level, which is exactly what these videos and person pander to.

It's called business. Now either recognize that this guy is in this to make money with art as their business venture and respect their hustle, or keep being retarded and thinking all artists have same goals. I know for a fact most people on here only have vague aspirations with nothing to show for it yet repeatedly critique people like this.

This guy gets it. He completely understands that all of this is complete bullshit and the fact it continues to proliferate with more and more new artists spouting bullshit, actively holds artists back. Ppl like brokendraw are 100% grifters. Sure you draw well but all you can do is teach ppl how to draw and what will these ppl do if they attain any modicum of skill? Teach more ppl. It's a fucking pyramid scheme where none of these ppl will make any meaningful art.

>>8057225
As stated above, fuck these grifters. They are grifters in the art space taking advantage of unknowing beginners. They aren't artists, they are grifters. Fuck this guy, he deserves no respect.

He is not against construction though, he just doesn't like box construction and grinding useless exercises in void, like the ones Brokendraw shills. >>
>>8057426
OK ur right...i watched the video now and more than anything, i am getting mad at the brokendraw guy.

The audacity of him to charge $2000 for an 8 weeks beginners course - and then it's not even a small class, it's a 20 people class! He better be driving home to you and give you damn good bj's for that money.

For $800, you get 10 weeks under Villpu or 8 weeks under Peter Han. $360 for 10 weeks under Karl Gnass. You can get feedback from actual masters and ask them questions (maybe Peter is a bit young for that master label). Brainstorm School and Concept Design Academy are charging ~$800 for 10 weeks as well.

$2000/8 weeks is plain exploitation of beginners who want to "draw like that youtube guy". It comes out more expensive than Don Bluth's Scamcademy ($10000/year = $1600/8 weeks). And they don't even get Donnie, instead they get mindbroken by box constructions. ̶I̶t̶ ̶h̶a̶s̶ ̶t̶r̶u̶l̶y̶ ̶b̶e̶e̶n̶ ̶a̶ ̶b̶r̶o̶k̶e̶n̶ ̶d̶r̶a̶w̶.

I actually hope we can get more people in the art community to criticize other peoples teaching, because theres lots of bad shit out there hurting beginners.
>>8057572
His classes are probably 2k because he mentioned he went to an expensive animation school (SCAD I think?) so hes probably trying to pay off them student loans.
Now that I think of it, it seems like everyone who does the whole "I'm gonna draw like KJG" is doing it to fool beginners into buying expensive courses that won't get them very far. Very scummy. I wonder how Kim would feel about people using his style to scam.

To get to the general topic:

Did anyone here actually take any live online classes and can report?

I do would like to take a Vilppu class before he dies (which may be any day now), but then I'm looking at the price tag and think it's probably not worth it. A few weeks with Peter Han might be cool too, but not $800 cool....

>>8057572

He's basically describing pic related.
He's someone who lived in a better time, was taught and worked with some of the best animators of the 20th century and describes how not a single person from his time and prior used whatever the fuck is being shilled today as some art course. He sees art for what it should be and the soulless husk that it currently is and calls it out.
It's two hours but he's spot on about most everything in that video.

You're not going to get good by drawing boxes in a white void.
You're not going to get good by drawing endless lines and circles.
You're not going to get good by meticulously mannequinizing the human figure in box formations.

>>
>>8060480
I'm open to understanding your position on why you think that.
>>
>>8060481
I agree with what the old boomer was saying most of the video. Which was that the exercises are quite in fact boring, I too was a victim of getting bored out my mind doing boxes (wrongly or correctly).
But boxes help you train a crucial aspect of drawing with is PERSPECTIVE. BUT that's all it really should be for. Boxes do help with imagination drawing and that's how I do most of my drawings now, I only ever do a rib cage for a rib cage shapedbox, and the head to figure out the head tilt I want, otherwise the rest of the limbs legs feet are placeholder shapes after the quick sketch.

But how they do videos practicing boxes is really a soul crushing exercise especially for a newbie, most of the people trying to teach drawing really arnt good teachers...

>Humans, animals and nature aren't fucking boxes.
They arnt, but they can be used to break down the shapes of Humans, animals, and creatures, or cars etc. I dont do it for everything, when I get familiar enough with a subject, I tend to skip the box part and start putting in the closer organic line I want.

>You're not going to get good by meticulously mannequinizing the human figure in box formations.
Depends, you should be going the next step which is drawing the organic form over the boxes. At least for me, at worst I visually internalize the box in my head for certain parts of the human body, again mainly to know where my perspective is.

>You're not going to get good by drawing endless lines and circles.
Yeah this was fucking stupid, shouldn't be more than a 30 second practice and left at that.

>You're not going to get good by drawing boxes in a white void.
Well you need to establish a horizon line, then simply do the rest from there. But taking it to the next step is pretty crucial.

Overall I do get what box fags are trying to show off but they really do a poor way of doing these exercises to try and get people to understand that its pretty much perspective training and it should only be that imo
>>
I'm at a point in my art where I need fundamentals. Everywhere I go, I see folks recommending boxes. I have a lot of art books downloaded and am tying to start reading them, but most of them don't put anything about box perpective.

Would it be cool to draw a neat box with a person inside? Yeah.
Would it be cool to draw a million boxes in space? Yeah.

I'm not sure what to do.
Are these boxes actually helping people?

I've come to /ic/ from time to time for years, but I haven't seen boxes mentioned until a couple years ago.

https://youtu.be/vNHPXjIECXw?is=X1cvsHxobqxnJCOY
>>
>>8060533
why does everyone want it to be handed to them? art is an evolving medium. even he admits that during his time a better artist would come in and rip their drawings to shreds, point out mistakes and improvements that they themselves didn't even notice. he also points out that using egg, bean, and other similar types of forms is where you want to start for shape construction, NOT boxes. he literally tells you what to do and how to do it, and where to get good resources to learn. watch the fucking video
>>
File: IMG_2293.jpg (283 KB, 1920x1080)
283 KB JPG
>>8060492
the issue is that you feel the "need" to do certain things. yes art has fundamental "rules" based upon common illusion, but, it's all just that, illusion. if you can make it convincing, do you need a massive autism grid? or perfect perspective for each form? your time is limited and drawing is based upon ideas that aren't even really there so to speak, it's three dimensions described in two
>>
>>8060940
I genuinely believe anyone who recommends dab is purposely trying to sabotage people. Imagine how many people stopped trying to learn how to draw because they didn't want to do the 250 boxes shit.
I'm really glad someone is critizising these courses/teachings, it's really needed.
I also really wonder why art courses have become so autistic with the construction and drawing EVERYTHING from memory.

>>

Wise post. Took me too long to realize this. Learning perspective helps you make something accurate, but making something accurate and making something *interesting* are very different things. I used to be really frustrated at and kinda hate manga for bending and breaking the characters so much, but now I understand why its done like that
>>
>>8060940
Yeah ok, but this is all coming from the perspective of drawing vintage cartoons. The kids want to become concept artists and stuff. They need that stiff and boring look in their digital work.
>>
>>8061030
>I also really wonder why art courses have become so autistic with the construction and drawing EVERYTHING from memory.
because it's something which is near impossible to teach, and a coveted, impressive, performance based skill. sure you can teach people to draw accurately from reference, or basic forms, or from life, etc, but then you would be out of a student in a few months. with this method, you can make the promise of drawing like that chinaman kim jung ji or whatever and keep people hooked to that dream for ages, siphoning money. he puts it perfectly in the video, "i'm not calling it a cult, but..."
>>
anyone who watched KJG or Rembert will tell you that they never construct or draw boxes. they just start drawing whatever and then bullshit their way through. yeah, it's all in their head, the mind guides the hand and all that.

What's wrong with landscapes, cityscapes, and figure drawing? Plus some cartoon, maybe even animation, teaching you gesture and how to bring your characters to life.

>>8060533
> egg, bean, and other similar types of forms
This, all parts of the human body can be accurately represented as an ovoid. Boxes, pyramids, cones, cylinders are more useful for human-made objects and insects i guess.

>>8060492
>Depends, you should be going the next step which is drawing the organic form over the boxes. At least for me, at worst I visually internalize the box in my head for certain parts of the human body, again mainly to know where my perspective is.

>old thing good

Nobody cares about your shittily drawn disneyslop. Modern construction and perspective comes from classical western art which is way older and more time tested than what some awful cartoonists drew. The world has moved on, boomoid.
>>
>>8062227
classical western art would use basic perspective and place figures overtop. no one does the box mannequin thing, it's a learning exercise. he is correct, just draw it, don't overthink it. draw a box and it's ilk is a cancer and shilled by chinamen and jeets trying to scam permabegs
>>
>>8062493
And yet every artist anyone actually cares about or does professional work uses modern perspective and construction/mannequinization, including Hampton, Bridgman, etc. That includes anime. To address the actual subject of the video, though, what drawabox teaches is line control for pre/beg/s who can't even draw a straight line and an approachable distillation of Peter Han's drawing process. You don't have to like it and can easily move on to Hampton or some other figure drawing/anime book (which all teach construction) afterwards. The people complaining about it are literal autists/low iq slaves who have to ask for permission to think and be told what to think instead of taking what they learned and applying it to their own drawings. You and this delusional boomer are coping.
>>
>>8062617
those are learning tools, and you can find pdfs of bridgeman books for free. a 2000$ course to teach essentially the beginning of a lesson over and over is a ripoff. cope all you want but he's right, as a beg you should focus on simple circular forms in gesture and move from there. putting everything in autistic box perspective is not what pros do, it's retarded and you drank the koolaid.
>the people complaining about it
draw a box literally teaches you this rote slave mentality of following rules, doing countless training exercises, and spamming figures. no it's not 50/50, just fucking draw. you agree with what the boomer says, actually watch the video and listen
>>
>>8062091
Absolute dogshit.
>>
>>8062637
Gesture IS already part of figure drawing, you absolute moron, you apply construction to it. You break down the primitive shapes and forms of objects (not just figures), construct them in perspective (intuitively or technically it doesn't matter), and draw the details on top, and over time you won't need the boxes, that is the point, it's that simple, that's what the pros actually did. Literal retards can't see it though. lol do let us know how far your terrible disneyslop "art" gets you, then.

where did i say it wasnt? in brokendraws course he just straight up doesn't teach gesture with retarded cube mannequins, he uses round forms and only teaches gesture well after teaching box construction. the boomer is correct and again, you agree with him, you "absolute moron." i have done those box exercises, all the perspective stuff, etc etc, and realized that a lot of artists are just making it up as they go. real eyes realize real lies. none of what the boomer says in response to brokendraws course is incorrect, the course is a scam and complete dogshit filled with meaningless time wasting "lessons." you are just a complete know it all who has his head so far up his own ass you can't comprehend that maybe a disney animator has something important to say

Doesn't drawabox tell its users to draw what they want for the same amount of time they do the mind numbing boxes? do drawabox if you want but don't just do drawabox actually draw
>>
>>8062688
What if this is fun to them? Who are you to judge?

>>8062675
You can do it, anon-san!
100 boxes, 100 cylinders, 10 treasure chests, every single day!
You are on your road to become a real artist, ganbare!

>>8062643
>not anime
Absolute garbage, /ic/ is disgusted

>>8060021
Likely there exists a model sheet for her, which the animator has already internalized. So not much construction necessary.

>>8059711
Yes it is, but it is looked down upon. The mainstream western art world does not draw attractive women being lewd, women can only be drawn lewd if they are unattractive.
Anyways, i came upon a couple of H artists on pixiv where you can clearly see that putting in too much construction and perspective makes for very dull goonable content.
>>
>>8062719
if it was fun for them and what they wanted to draw they wouldn't have asked how many more boxes they have to do before they can draw what they want

>>8062675
Funschizo, if you would spend more time doing those gesture sketches and copying from Loomis books and learning some anatomy and constructing from reference you would actually start improving. Stop doing those retarded exercises, they are not doing anything for you anymore.

kjg's art and its consequences have been a disaster for online art education
>>
>>8062948
Yes, now grind literally hundreds of heads and skulls and portraits for months to a years. And start drawing from different angles and get some better construction. If you want to draw anime then go and watch Hide's videos on head construction or get his head course from the video general in the archive, if the link is still up. Draw from different angles, not just flat front facing, so you actually learn something about the form of the head. Draw some real skulls and portraits too and don't just draw a face without a fucking head. It's fine to practice the facial features separately on occasion, but not like this. Also don't draw the entire outline of the form or if you do, then go over it again on another layer. Also get a different brush, anything with texture like a pencil brush will help mask bad line work a bit.
>>
>>8062953
the part that weirds me out with the obsession of KJG is that no one actually talks about the things they like about his pieces... composition, character design, themes, acting, etc
it's always just "he draw from imagination good" and proceed to mindlessly try to mimic down and plop down figures with animal heads walking or some sausage looking human figure
but it's okay they did it from imagination they didn't need to do any roughs or underdrawing

It's because these 'people' are just golems who view art like a party trick akin to juggling, there's no artistry beside performace. An unemployed Filipino drawing Uma Musumes for 6 months will outpace them.
>>
>>8062948
Anon, what do you want to draw exactly? And what does it look like when you try to draw it now?
>>
I genuinely think ai caused an influx of people trying to hustle with art courses since making money just off of art is harder now. kjg dying also cause this influx of people trying to sell courses on how to draw like him, notice how all of these people trying to sell their scammy courses only started to do this after he died...
>>8063218
I actually have watched some of his videos, he's made good progress, but he seems stuck on the whole drawing 1000 mannequins in perspective kjg style junk. He's gotten to a level where hes good enough to start drawing what he likes but he seems like he doesn't really have his own interest or hes scared to draw anything other than boxy people (comfort zone).
>>8063227
The appeal is how skilled they are, not the art itself. Notice how you don't really see anyone discuss their art, just how good they are. Maybe thats a lesson that appeal/interest leaves a longer lasting impression than pure skill.
>>
>>8063317
>what do you want to draw exactly?
Characters

>And what does it look like when you try to draw it now?
Most of the time, I don’t even know how to begin, or else I give up after just a few lines.
>>
>>8063334
You mean other characters or your own? Also how much figure drawing do you do?
>>
>>8063341
Both others and my own.
I’ve drawn thousands of boxes and cylinders.
>>
>>8063344
You should stop with the boxes and practice figure drawing and anatomy. Just boxes and cylinders aren't going to get you where you want. Something that really helps me as far as character design goes is building up a reference folder of images you like i.e. clothes/characters/people you like the look of that you can use to help you draw something or give you ideas. But it sounds like you want to draw people and my recommendation is it's time you take a more direct route.
>>
>>8062719
>i came upon a couple of H artists on pixiv where you can clearly see that putting in too much construction and perspective makes for very dull goonable content
Can you give their names or liks if you still remember? I just recently snapped out of this construction obsession so it would be interesting to see where this could lead to if you overdo it.
>>
>>8063327
>I genuinely think ai caused an influx of people trying to hustle with art courses since making money just off of art is harder now.
That's exactly what it is and it will only get worse. You can't even pivot to tech because AI trivialized that too, so the only thing they can do is grift.
>>
the cruel irony of life is if you need to hunt for courses and the righting starting point, its over. successful people dont just go from bad to good at anything, they always start good.

This doesn't mean give up, but focus on mileage rather than studies.
>>
>>8063218
Why? He's clearly in his zone of having a consistent small fan base of his nothing drawings who will validate him for working towards nothing and having nothing for an ultimate goal. To grow as an artist will jeopardize his little safe space.
>>
>>8063512
It's been that way since the Obama website meltdown of late 2013. Smart people saw this opportunity in the rise of online education and got on early (myself included). It wasn't until 2016ish when all the conceptart fags saw the writing on the wall and launched their own schools in droves (marc brunet, robotpencil, proko, all the people who you see today opening independent academies). And then covid just blasted the door open. AI had nothing to do with it--it's a consequence of people who couldn't keep their mouth shut back then about how much money they were making from teaching online and started selling the shovels.

This is why you see he recurring meme of "he's just trying to sell you a course he isn't genuine" criticism online.

What can we replace things like dab with? I also think we should lean away from these very rigid perspective type teachings, its not good for organic drawing (like people, or anime girls for you weebs) and a basic understanding of perspective will get you far, so no need for these super in depth lessons (right now, as a beginner).
Also if you are a beginner just draw what YOU like, it keeps you motivated and its FUN. Or suffer and draw boxes for 4 years straight

Always love it when a Boomer loves to shit on a zoomer and ruin their income.
>>
Just because a bunch of grifters copy what someone else teaches to make a living, doesn't mean that the knowledge they're copying isn't useful in the appropiate context.
Those who shit on construction are gatekeepers who never provide anything of value to others.

Fuck DAB...
If you wish, you can do a fast reading and do what you want for just a few minutes, but absolutely avoid the 100 boxes in the void, especially because it's useless without a reference to check if they are actually correct.

Instead of the 100 boxes in the void, I would trace from a photo of a building its box, then, based on that box, understanding the vanishing points and horizon line, and then you would start from that.

No, I am not saying to do 100 times, I am just saying that this gives a reference for checking if your box is correct with the same camera lens.

Extracting the perspective it's also a method you can use to add new objects in a scenary.
>>
>>8063794
>Boomer ruins zoomers income by pointing out how his teachings keep you discouraged and in a loop so you'll buy shitty courses (that'll also keep you in a loop).
The boomer is fucking based for calling out this shit. As this threads gone on I've really come to dislike brokendraw and really anyone who sells courses like this. A 2k course for basics you can learn with some google searches and a few youtube videos. Such a scam.
>>8063889
Yes learning and using construction is important, even the boomer in the video posted up thread doesn't disagree, but the fact so many people are shilling courses with this retarded "build a box from every angle 1000 times and then do the same with a cylinder" shit is horrible. These "teachers" are stunting beginners so they'll keep on buying their courses, and keep on watching their videos. Keeping people beginners makes more money, cause an intermediate person will leave and draw what he wants, while the beginner will keep on grinding cubes and mannequins and buy new courses.

Just looked at your channel and i wanna scream

https://www.youtube.com/@praisethesun6453/streams

200 hours plus wasted on this garbage. You continued drinking the snake oil long after the merchant told you to stop. You have become artistically retarded.

A year ago you seemed to have fun copying manga panels, what happened to that. With what you are doing, you are not engaging your skill set in any meaningful manner. It's a self-comforting thing you just do like stimming or masturbation.

Do not do a single set of drawabox exercises anymore. If you do, I urge you to stop drawing, you are not made out for this. That sounds harsh, but it's something you should seriously consider instead of continuing like this - stopping a hobby that stresses you out is nothing to be ashamed of.

If you want to draw your own characters, you should have started yesteryear. Stop copying and come up with your own stuff (references are okay, as long as they are not plainly copied). Even if you draw like crystals1986 (in fact, can you even draw like crystals1986 on your own?), you need a basis that you can develop first. Forget about complicated constructions that aren't your own (that includes loomis head and anime heads, which are deceptively difficult). Come up with your own stuff - nobody is going to teach you how to be creative, no course will magically unlock it, only you committing to create your own stuff will do that.

Don't immediately go into figure drawing or anatomy either, like >>8063382 recommends. Those are just another trap to pour years into and never get any closer. Figure drawing is fine for you if you find a teacher who works conceptually (like many teachers with animation background tend to do), but if you work by measurement you will end up flailing like in >>8050604 (been there, done that - classic atelier style drawing is as much a trap as drawabox, just marginally more useful).

Your box drawing skills may come back later but you need to switch course.

I fear there is nothing to replace it with, as the premise is probably flawed. Besides absolute beginner stuff on the level of Mark Kistler's "learn to draw in 30 days", there is nothing generic that can actually teach you to become good at drawing. You really have to figure out what you want, continuously reevaluate what you've got, and work on that.
>>
>>8053480
if they were real KJG fans they'd draw skinny tattooed women shooting up heroin while getting fucked in the ass and having their intestines torn out by a wolf
>>
>>8066262
The box challenge is literally because the DaB guy couldn't be bothered to help someone with their boxes and just told them to do an ass-load of boxes. He admitted it in his old intro video for the challenge, but it looks like he's updated that video and now jumps through hoops trying to explain how this is an integral part of the process and not really grinding. You just need someone to go over your boxes and point out your mistakes and you can figure out boxes in a week of focused study. The whole challenge is an admission that online learning fails beginners. The time when a student needs a mentor the most is when they're left to figure things out in their own.

Honestly I hadn't even considered it but yeah I think you're giving better advice here. I still think learning gesture, CSI curves, and the general rhythm/shapes of the body can have value without being a total time sink. Most important at any rate is that guy drops the endless repetition.

That’s true. When I’m not drawing, I feel bad because I sense that I’m wasting my time. If I try to draw what I want, I feel even worse, because I’m unable to do it.

I bought a newly released course on coloso.jp since I know Japanese + it's cheaper and I'm curious about what the process is like to rip videos. I couldn't find any public information on how to do it.
>>
>>8067041

>>
>>8067041
I think what you need is a mentor who is willing to talk and go through things with you. I have art friends who were in the same place as you are and I managed to get them out of it.
>>
>>8067041
Brah, what are you drawing in your free time?
Are you drawing references? I saw the youtube channel, gonna tell you now to stop making boxes. If you wanna learn perspective, learn perspective.

Are you drawing human bones? Drawing muscles on top of those bones? Looking at pictures of bodies moving in different ways and trying to draw muscles over those gestures to get an understanding of how they stretch with different poses/bodies?

What are you doing?
How many sketchbooks have you completed from just drawing pictures? How often do you draw?

This is the honest best advice I can give you right now:
Who cares?

I'm serious. Who cares? Only you see your art - only you. There's hundreds of how to art books available. Read them, copy them, apply them.
Take a figure drawing class, draw the stuff in your room, go out in public with a sketchbook, draw 24/7 if it makes you feel better.
Get that mileage.

All art is is mileage and understanding. And you get understanding with mileage.

I dunno if this will help you, but I absolutely love art. I love drawing. Am I amazing? Hell no, but I'm not gonna stop because I know what I want out of this.

I see more courses popping up every day, they're cashing in as fast as they can before everyone realizes there will be no more money in art ever again
