    **Strive for quantity AND quality.**

    Anime Studying:
    >Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
    >Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
    >Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
    >Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
    >Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

    General Anime Style Discussion:
    >Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
    >Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
    >Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

The days of anime needing a containment thread are long over. Anime runs the board now.
I think this thread still has a purpose though, since doing anime copies is such a common exercise
    >>

    >>8048999
i see you're studying gender swap, that's an important practice
    >>
what do I do if I can't decide on a model? I want someone who draws loli, but many I like don't seem to share their sketches or simplified drawing styles so it's incredibly difficult to study them as a supreme beginner.
    >>
    Tried copying them using guidelines then did them by memory; it's so hard to get the anime head shape. I always think about trying to draw a real face silhouette;

I tried human face -> anime and it was terrible.
    >>
    >>8049176
that method is too hard for a supreme beginner
    >>
    >>8049325
Also tried copying Okinawa's body but I still can't point what is wrong even though my copy looks like a broken ragdoll
    >>
    >>8049328
what should I do then? ive been drawing for four months or so.
    >>
    >>8049338
I personally copied a ton of taco1704's tuts during my first year. took some good mileage out of that
    >>
    >>8049176
Try all of them and filter them down based on personal compatibility (feels easier to draw in the style and understand what the artist is doing) and the style allowing you to create the media you want to create.
You can always change it later too since you'll have more knowledge to base the decisions on, the EXP won't be lost. 4 months is enough to start if you've been copying some anime art already. If not then start copying an artist first (along with copying hide channel's croquis playlist).

    >>8049353
Not Japanese art. Hopefully you didn't take anything fundamental out of it to base your drawing style on.
    >>
    >>8049362
    >to base your drawing style on
I think I did lol but making my drawings look like a jap did it is not my goal. so long as the art is appealing I don't care if it's from malaysia or taiwan or wherever else
but regardless, his tutorials are mostly anatomy related so it's probably useful for anyone
    >>
    >>8049375
    >making my drawings look like a jap did it is not my goal
I thought this was the anime general?
Also it's not about where it's from but the techniques used to create the art, it's just that legit full-on anime drawn by a non-Japanese person is still a pretty rare thing in the world (even if it gets slightly more common as you get geographically closer to Japan).

Try to understand the actual shape of the head, how it looks flat and in 3d. If you look at the flat shapes, theyre almost all the same, it makes it easier to replicate and draw from memory. You can do the same for the body

As a thesis I'm not sure copying anime is the way to go. Anime is drawn by people who did extensive life drawings and study. if you copy anime instead of real life then the art will just degenerate.

how can you understand it by copying it? That's just a line by line copy approach. its really easy to fall into the trap of becoming a human copy machine.

the better approach would be to take the design/drawing/style and redraw the same thing from a different angle and ideally different pose.
    >>
    >>8051009
Did you even read the description
    >Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork
Im not even disagreeing, just doing a 1:1 line by line copy is probably not very beneficial you need to do it in a way that you can replicate out of your head, but that is what is recomended here anyway
    >>
am i retarded? i picked imamura because there's a hundred copycats but i have no idea what i should be even doing. i'm not learning anything from simply copying, should i be breaking his art down into simpler shapes? how should i do it? i'm too autistic to guess by myself
    >>
    >>8051021
Imamura has an intuitive sense of 3d space, which is only gainable from mastery of life drawing so drawing from 3d (life drawing) is the best approach

both. just mix up your studies and work towards your goal. some basic understanding of anatomy should exist so you know what the simplifed lines represent or what you've drawn. granted, life drawing and realism will give you a better observation skill, due to its complexity, but it also takes a lot longer to get right.

I think the thing that trips me up the most as someone whose experimenting with anime style after drawing cartoons mainly is the facial proportion/ eye size

So far every time I sketch a face I need to adjust the eyes down more before it looks "right"
I've only been at it for less than a week though so it's just a matter of building that eye for it
    >>
    >>8049413
thanks I tried it and I'm still testing. I found an artist I like and will probably use him as a reference for other copies.
    >>
    >>8051510
the main struggle is going to be unlearning all the bad drawing technique caused by cartoons' obsession about simplified shapes and learning to actually draw full quality anime shapes.
doesn't help that even those that attempt anime in the west are infected by this mind virus so if you don't know JP or aren't just extremely based and redpilled it's hard to leave the bubble.

    >>
    >>8051773
you must be new to drawing, but dynamic drawing is actually really hard to do right without reference. artist needs to practice drawing dynamic mannequins without reference, which he doesn't do. he hopes to absorb it through osmosis, but trust me (cause i've done it) it's a really slow process. there are just so many decisions you need to make, like what pose and which angle, in what environment, for what purpose. even if you could draw anything, you still need to decide and settle.
    >>
    >>8051773

    >>
    >>8051770
i guess its the eye size. yesterday was an off day
    >>
    >>8051773
Not every figure drawing needs to be super-dynamic. But if you feel you have this problem in your own work, it is likely because you are not starting with a strong gesture.
As others have noted, the only way to prove you understand figure drawing is to do so without reference. This is not being anti-reference. There are just things you are not forced to consider when you use them.
There are many video examples here of starting with a pose before building out the structure.

    Depends on where you're at.
/begs/ should be studying pretty much all the time. Most people need a good year or 2 before they're able to make something they're proud of that isnt 1:1 copy.
/ints/ should be 50:50. But It really depends on how much time you wanna spent with the hobby. Casual /ints/ usally do a lot of studies and like 1 or 2 high quality finished art per month. Grinding /ints/ do tons more art but at a lower quality. So the ratio is really up to you on what kind of artists you are.

What's the best way to learn anatomy? I remember seeing the boxes method a few times.
    >>
    >>8062338
    >study anatomy by doing non-anatomy
Boxes are for the gullible goyim. Studying actual anatomy and study/copy good anime drawings that have anatomy in the way you want to draw it then try to replicate.
    >>
    >>8062321
    >>8062322
Rather than lineart, I would say anatomy and proportions. Your hands are too big and your abdomen too long in the first pic, and in the second pic her neck+torso+hips are straight as a trunk when it should have some curvature to look natural.
    >>
    >>8062397
    >>8062321
Besides proportions, the individual shapes in the face are just not anime. I would say look closely at some anime artist you want to draw like and see how you differ, try to do copies and compare what's different when you draw original art that tries to look similar in quality.

Face on the second one is better btw.

For linework take a close look at high res scans of settei or genga with faces and copy every single line you see. It's going to boost your understanding of shapes as well, you will understand how to make them look better and more anime.

drop the line weight, you don't understand shape enough to be playing with it, not only it's making your drawing ugly it's making you do wrong decisions. You can go back to it once you improved a bit, don't get discouraged tho, you're just making things extra difficult for yourself.

that's unironically enough. as long as you don't try to copy the drawings themselves and draw like le proko you will be okay. just use it as pure non-execution info.
find good drawings of anime bodies and find how they implemented that anatomical knowledge and copy that.
    >>8063718
if they're about composition you can watch them. you can read the loomis book about that too. the rest of their content isn't too valuable for anime.

    >>8063597
getting better at shapes is free, you get better at the by drawing more. Is more of an appeal fundamental, you have to figure out which shapes are pretty too look at, it's not particularly subjective but it depends on a lot of personal things, the way you draw your lines, which lines are you comfortable with, even the way you hold your pen will change your shapes. but remeber pretty things are pretty. Just focus on drawing more for now

    >>
    >>8064901
It's likely going to cripple you in the long run. Just use the prominent lines already in the drawing to copy it better. In pro art all the line directions and angles are deliberate, you don't actually need anything external to understand it.

The western/chinese obsession with overlaid abstractions that don't actually exist in the drawing is alarming.
    >>
    >>8064908
but Its so hard to copy anything other than standing poses because the more horizontal space a pose takes up the more difficult it is to keep track both vertically and horizontally.
    >>
    >>8064912
Of course it's going to be hard since it's anime. But a grid doesn't actually make you understand gesture and the decisions behind all the line angles which you absolutely need to understand to make good art yourself.

I suggest tracing a hide-like gesture mannequin using the lines already drawn by the artist and then copying that first if something is giving you trouble.

Any recommendation for illustration video courses on Coloso? I need something that teaches me basic anatomy, perspective, color theory and rendering
    >>
    >>8067387
most of the coloso courses I've seen are for people who already know those things and are looking for specific artists process
    >>
    >>8067389
Yeah, the problem with illustration is that it's highly stylized and not something you can easily teach. I've downloaded hide's coloso courses because they're so fundamental and easy to study. But he's an animator so I'm hoping there's artist like Yoneyama Mai or tarou2 who are both animators and illustrators, but alas I didn't find them on Coloso. Maybe they're too big and busy to make Coloso courses.

Anyway, I'm currently downloading this one:
    https://coloso.global/en/products/illustrator-c-us
It seems that the color theory part is a bit basic, but nonetheless I'm intrigued by this "visual storytelling" part

As for rendering I'm looking for something like Pablo Uchida, but the best I could find so far is GUWEIZ. It seems his/her style heavily relies on photobashing though
    https://coloso.global/en/products/signature-guweiz-us
    >>
    >>8051021
You should try to study Takahiro Kishida. There's a reason why he's one of the masters in anime industry.
    >>
    >>8060613
Animators love silhouette and simple shapes. Creating three-dimensionality through just a few lines is the key. That's why croquis is the most used study method for most animators.
    >>

How do you draw anime clothes?

    >>
    >>8067683
    Are you fucking with me?
    >>
    >>8067697
No. Faces are the hardest and most unique part of anime and have all the techniques used fully and in the most testing way, you can't fake it and if you can draw faces you understand the general drawing principles behind anime anything (which you need to grind individually too).
    >>
    >>8067391
What are you hoping to find in a coloso course? Just get the tried and true fundie books and look at the art. If no funny business like 3d is going on then the artwork itself is literally all you need. A lot of artists even post their process online https://youtu.be/sclRJl6LmSw. Popular ones will have whole breakdowns of their style made by youtube grifters. Mai has countless breakdowns if you really need it spoonfed
    >>
Is there actually a digital painting course or books that actually teach more Japanese-style anime-like illustrations? Japanese illustrators usually just don't talk about painting (or drawing for that matter) in depth like you would want or expect as a westerner. You just have to cope with that, but I get why since they would immediately become a target for the grifters and it's not socially profitable in their culture to just reveal this stuff openly (slowly changing already with youtube). Even Saito with all of his good advice will drop nuggets of truth but won't go full in depth.

I’m looking for artists that draw pubic hair well. I like it on real women but I’m yet to find it in an anime style on a way I like

How do japanese artist draw anime clothes traditionally? Do they skip drawing a mannequin like the one I have here?
    >>
    >>8068795
You are pretty much always going to put clothes on top of a form

none of these feel like "anime", either time to study or move on from Anime all together, faux anime tends to be pretty yucky to the eyes

Light boxes, It's always funny to me that people can't conceptualize layers also being an analog thing. But yes if you need to, draw on top of your construction then go over it with a light box or flip the pages like an onion skin and draw it cleaner. Some crazy characters do do straight up super clean genga, but it only makes sense if you have a deadline, doing the construction takes minutes, and you can always go over it
    >>
    >>8068797
    Alright I can accept that.
    >>8068873
    >flip the page like an onion skin
Well I dont have a light box so either this is my option or I just have to accept that ill have a body that might be kind of visible when I go to draw clothes
    >>
    >>8068917
colored pencils then isolate the colors digitally, making a lightbox is piss easy tho
    >>
    >>8068936
I totally forgot about colored pencils lmao. Ive seen erasable ones too.. anyways is there some specific kind of colored pencils that I should pick up or anything goes?

NTA but any color should be fine. You can try non-photo blue or light blue which is supposed to be easier for digital programs to isolate.

Naoki Saito, Hiro Mashima, and possibly others, have that kind of tutorials on their youtube channels. But they are very basic, and honestly they don't look very good.

What kind of clothes are you trying to draw on her? If you drop a ref of the dress/outfit I'll attempt to draw your character pose with it on. It's good practice and she's cute , so I might as well.
