Mechstuff thread. Mechs, robots, robot girls, weapons, armour, vehicles, military, engineering, transportation, scifi, etc. Post 'em.
    >>
Do I need to study engineering and firearms to be able to draw semi-realistic mechs? I started browsing /k/ and have been wondering if it helps.
    >>
    >>8018398
Industrial design would definitely help. HR Giger studied industrial design. That's probably one of the reasons why he was able to make his biomechanical paintings look very realistic partly.

I guess studying Scott Robertson could probably help.

Here’s my most recent mech girl, studies and techniques based on Masamune Shirow and rendering techniques inspired by Jim Lees stream. I love the way he uses the black and and white star splatter. I achieved the after burn particles with a tooth brush.

aww sweet, was hoping we'd have another one of these threads.

here are my WIP floor plans for my kilometer-long covie ship. about 55% done with deck 1 of 12. scaled at M6.667 scale (1 pixel = 15x15 centimeters, or a little less than 6 inches)

    Any tips on drawing guns?
    >>
    >>8021319

most important thing is the handle. doesn't matter how big the gun is, the handle has to be the right size for the wielder. handles are usually 1.25 to 1.5 inches wide and around 5 or 6 inches long.

How long have you been drawing? Hours per day practice on average?

Would be happy to hear back from you. It's sort of the level I want to reach.

just wait until you start trying to do car suspension and understand what all the parts of an engine do. makes anatomy look like easymode.
    >>
    >>8031505
anatomy is easy mode, the only people who think it's some demanding undertaking are the type to spend 5 years "studying gesture"

i'm getting this ship 3D modeled so i can create more accurate plans. i paid for it two days ago, artist finally started on it today. should take 149 more days lmao. i need to find something else to draw in the meantime.

i made my interpretation of the assault-era wolfen. the versions on the left are based on adamkop's designs. i think that the star fox ships would look better with typical scifi barrel engines.

there is something sickly about this piece, perhaps the tubes are subtly visceral and the legs are insectoid, both things humans are naturally averse to. i like that it's creepy without actually being disgusting in any way. does this unit-16 have a purpose?
    >>
    >>8062297
there is rarely a sort of elaborate lore to my pieces, i can however say what my inspirations were. the mountainside was inspired by those afghanistan combat videos, with lots of broken up rocks for cover. that terrain would make it difficult to impossible for wheeled or tracked vehicles to maneuver, hence why the thinly legs would actually be useful. the armaments with 6 rockets could be something like atgms, so i guess overall that would make it into a sort of backcountry ambusher unit. there is quite a lot of room in the superstructure for fuel, so these could operate independently for prolongued periods of time, maybe sitting idle in the harsh weather for weeks, unless called into action.

What resources do you guys recommend to learn to draw this stuff? Any books especially? I've been wanting to try for a long time but don't know where to start or how to.

Meant to post this on tueday, but the website was having a little fucky-wucky and posting was disabled for a couple days.

artist didn't make any progress on the model last week due to doing other things, but he sketched out some pen-on-paper concept art for the underside and engine detailing for the covenant light cruiser i've commissioned. will hear back from him on the 27th.
