    Mauricio Barbato
Brazilian contemporary painter born in Rio de Janeiro in 1963

He is best known for his stunningly realistic, highly detailed paintings of untouched tropical nature, specifically focusing on the Amazon rainforest and the Atlantic Forest

It is more difficult to get good photos of this artist's work, but if anyone has any, please post them

you know at first I liked his art, especially that first OP image you posted, which is truly beautiful

but honestly the rest of Mauricio's art is *too* realistic, it doesn't have any of the spiritual energy and feeling that Tomas Sanchez's work has. can't say I like this guy nearly as much.

This piece of art is a great example of why Barbato's work fails to capture the same essence of mysticism as Sanchez's, why it fails to rise to the same level of artistic merit.

Technically, he's clearly very skilled. It's very "photo realistic", if you were looking at this from 20 feet away you'd think it was a picture. The level of detail in each tree is impressive, as well as his understanding of 3D space and perspective.

But it's just not well composed as a painting. The spacing and composition make no sense, it feels like the locations of the waterfall, rapids, cliff face, etc are an afterthought with no real meaning. It feels almost like a picture taken by an amateur.

There's TOO MUCH detail, too much shit shoved into the frame, with no clear reason or motivation. Sanchez's work has a purpose. He emphasizes the soul's connection with nature, how the human is a part of the greater framework of the natural world, how man is but a small part of the universe.

This? It means fucking nothing. It says nothing to me, aside from "nature is detailed and beautiful". He honestly even fails to capture the beauty of nature in many of his pieces. Complexity alone is not enough to make a work of art beautiful.

Overall I'd give his art a 6.5/10. He has potential but should study under Tomas Sanchez for a decade and pick up Sanchez's sense of spirituality and composition. That is all

if this is a painting, the lighting is INSANE

Our friend has a good point about the lack of compositional depth in these paintings.

Having seen the Amazon myself, I can say that there is no composition that kind of nature.

I think the realism is the point and the reality is that the rainforest is a messy place that doesn’t follow any rules but its own.
Here chaos is the truth and it is naked and alien to man’s standards of beauty.

This moved me, reminded me of being surrounded by this wall of green. Felt like I was on an alien world.

i'm usually more of a fan of surrealist paintings but this is incredibly beautiful!
i'd definitely put some of his art on my wall

Of course there's no composition in nature!
That's the entire point of developing a sense of aesthetics, it's our job to decide what looks good and what doesn't. That's what it means to compose a picture or a painting.

A human can go into the Amazon, find an angle that is astoundingly beautiful, and capture that. The thing that makes the Amazon so beautiful is the abundance of beautiful angles compared to a place like Fresno or whatever.

    >the realism is the point, the rainforest is just a messy place
I mean, I guess that can be one goal of art, to demonstrate that. But I don't really get that impression from Barbato's art that the shitty composition is intentional.
