I normally don't say this often, but this is one of those times where "thing, Japanese thing" is unironically warrented. They were mogged by superior conquistadores and only become better with more European influence over time.

Why do Protestants glorify and even larp as them?

It's a more pure implementation of the idea of knights.

Don't know. Japanese are bugmen just like any other Oriental, except slightly less dirty.

That's not funny, that was Papal genius in the art of mass human sacrifice into meat grinders - one of their specialties, they were mostly heretics, and in that game, mostly is as good as it gets.

The Samurais were a social class that may have been based on their ability to fight in war, but due to Japan's isolationatist nature had periods (often centuries long) where they enganged in other matters besides war (culture, politics,...). Nobody is saying that the Samurai, even at their peak of martial prowess, were the greatest warriors in human history, but they were nonetheless a social class that maintained their status for centuries which in a time where Military power translated to political power is proof enough that they had to be somewhat strong.
A single out-of-context wikipedia statistic of a real event is not an indication that the Samurais were frauds. Especially when they were fighting a power that has been utterly dominating warriors worldwide with ease.
I could also pull a medieval battles in which European knights got annihilated by peasants and say knights suck (see picrel where Swiss Peasanta defeated a numerically superior force of the best knights Europe had to offer by using their advantage in terrain). If it wouldn't have been a recent event, I could mention Operation Red Wings where U.S. special forces got annihilated by an Afghan Mountain militia and say that the U.S. Military always sucked. If you want to make a point, actually engange with the subject in a nuanced manner

Samurai spent most of their history raping Japanese peasants, not fighting peer or superior powers.

They did an invasion of Korea where they raped Korean women in the Imjin war.

They didn't conquer any land except stone age Ainu on Hokkaido.

That's pretty much their entire history.

Obviously an Island nation relatively far away from the Asian Mainland is not going to fight many wars against peer states. So of course the Samurai were mostly fighting against each other. If they were incompetent, they wouldn't even have been able to leave their mainland to conduct an invasion of Korea, yet alone archieve a long series of tactical successes before losing because of logistical difficulties in whose situation no one could have done better. Again, I'm not saying Samurais were the greatest warriors or close to this title, but there is a reason why they earned such a fearsome reputation. You don't have to be contrarian just because a bunch of retarded weebs exist.

Stop memeing this shit. There's is no historical record of Spanish soldiers fighting samurai. The alleged Battle of Caguyan is based on the tall tale of an alcoholic Spanish sailor. No official military and bureaucratic account corroborates this story.

    >They were mogged by superior conquistadores and only become better with more European influence over time.

Contrary to retarded modern views, the Europeans in Asia were smart enough to avoid open conflict with the regional powers. They were too small in numbers to present a formidable force, and in the few instances they pissed off the regional powers, they got swatted like flies.

    >Why do Protestants glorify and even larp as them?

    Orientalism

The Cagayan batttle was fought against a group of Wokou, which were motley crews of both japanese and chinese pirates. According to the updated Wikipedia article, only a handful of them were ever Ronin. You're basically acting like a Caribbean pirate crew was actually composed of knights fully arrayed in beautiful plate armor because a captain somewhere received a title or two while working as a corsair for a kingdom.

    >>18768162
The battle was fought in the Philippines against a band of pirates, so it is quite unlikely for there to have been any Japanese women around.
    >>
    >>18768481
Japan wasn't into fighting outside of Japan

    >What's so special about the samurai anyways?

They looked really flippin' cool and for most people that was enough to sell the mythology.
Otherwise, see: >>18768465 >>18768481 the Samurai were thugs, brutes, and dogs: great at killing underfed peasants, but would fold like paper against any kind of real, trained, disciplined, military force. Even the Japanese themselves historically agree with this point as the great success of the Meji restoration depended upon putting down these feudal savages and replacing them with a modern, regimented, and proud military that could take on comparative rivals.
