Spain never implemented segregationist laws as Britain (and later the USA) did in their territories, or France in Haiti. It was easier for a black slave to obtain his freedom in Spanish territory than in any other European colony. In fact, the first Underground Railroad went from the thirteen Colonies to Spanish Florida, where the first free black town in what is now USA, Fort Mose, was founded.Another thing is that interracial marriage between whites and blacks was perfectly legal in the Empire, being the first in Europe to legalize it in 1514. France would not legalize it until 1746, and Great Britain began to implement anti-miscegenation laws, starting with Maryland in 1664, and from here it would spread to other colonies in America. Interracial marriage would not be legal in the US until 1967, more than four and a half centuries later.Spaniards never prohibited Blacks from attending the universities that the Spanish founded in America. For example, in the universities of Cuba and Santo Domingo during the Spanish Empire, more than half of the students were black and mulatto.
