They moved to the suburbs to get away from ever-increasing living costs due to the cities running out of space. Back then, the open spaces of extra-urban development meant prices were cheaper. Since then, developers & real estate agents and bankers wised up and have since raised suburban housing/property costs to fleece those who'd move out from the cities.
