Why does anyone even bother trying to conquer stuff anymore when the only way to hold onto territory for any long stretch of time is to completely genocide the native populace and resettle it with your own?

>Why does anyone even bother trying to conquer stuff anymore
They largely don't.
>>
>>18765398
The last century of history has had plenty of wars and conflicts over land.
>>
>>18765395
Aren't most wars of conquest in recent times precisely had that result? I mean the recent armenian azerbaijani war ended with the whole population getting expelled.
Or they were wars were the natives of the country msde up the majority of the region thry conquered.

China has successfully integrated its minorities
>>18765406
Not really. And rhe ones that do have been irrelevent. Can't think of any major war where X nation ceded y territory to Z.

Most wars have been independence type shit

China still has massive internment camps filled with Uyghurs though

World War 2?
>>
>>18765427
World War 2 was irrelevant and World War 1 was not over territory
>>
>>18765424
Nope.
>>18765427
I assumed the question was posed for the post ww2 world
>>

I think it depends on what you mean by "integrated" because hundreds of millions of minorities in China are temporarily housed workers under the Hukou System here they essentially live in Favelas in the West, far from the Coastal Cities

>I assumed the question was posed for the post ww2 world
Can be either. I was mainly thinking about WW2 when I made the thread but I did kind of word my question weird.

Nations have to fight as part of the struggle for existence. As resources dry up, hatred will grow
>>
>>18765395
>completely genocide the native populace and resettle it with your own?
Then the population STILL ends up dropping hard over time. More so without imperial handouts to mitigate the disadvantages of spreading too wide.
>>
>>18765395
if race is determined by geography, then it's impossible to genocide a native populace, as subsequent populations will just adapt to their new environments given enough time
>>
>>18765436
They do have them in camps. It's not a secret.

careful, chuds don't like it when you make too much sense

Curious if anyone can answer: but why is it that Rome was able to conquer and subjugate people decently enough to the point where many in the empire just considered themselves Romans and not their native race?

>Little to no writing
>Small Kingdoms & Tribes
>No Large Cities
Rome conquered a world that largely didn't have a unified cultural bedrock. Rome was the beginning of what would become Western Civilization. Once the Western Roman Empire fell, it ruled Europe for over 500 years and they left giant cities, a network of roads, infrastructure, and their language and religion. Also Roman was a civic identity not necessarily a race or an ethnicity. People in Ancient Rome would identify with their ethnicity and also identify as Roman as well.

For a more modern comparison, you can look at the US Expansion. It conquered a land that more or else didn't have an established cultural bedrock. Many Native Americans simply assimilated into American society after being conquered and millions of Europeans migrated during the 1800s. America left a huge mark with all the cities, infrastructure, and what not throughout North America. And of course, American isn't a race. Many Americans would usually identify with whatever ancestral heritage they have, alongside being American as well.

Makes sense.

>Also Roman was a civic identity not necessarily a race or an ethnicity
Yeah, sorry, I think the word I was looking for was cultural identity.
>>
>>18765395
Nobody does conquer anything anymore. The only conquests that have really happened since ww2 were civil wars, economic disputes, and ethnic disputes (which wouldn't require genocide because you're trying to include your own people in your own borders)

In the modern world capitalism can just fill the role of the colonial charter. People can move freely and easily. The capital doesn't new to spend tons of money to populate a conquered area, cheap land prices will do it for them
>>
>>18765566
Unironically how EU5 works. Your colonists become functionally african by becoming resistant to the local climate and malaria within a few generations.
