Samael is viewed as the celestial prince and guardian angel of Rome, Edom, and Esau, making him the direct spiritual and national archenemy of Michael, who is the champion and protector of Israel.In some traditional accounts, Samael's fall and rivalry are also closely tied to Metatron (often identified with the ascended Enoch), positioning them as opposing forces.According to Bahya ben Asher, in his commentary on Genesis 4:22:3, there are four mothers of demons, Lilith, Na'amah, Agrat and Mahalath, who rule over the four Tequfot (equinoxes and solstices). These four women are the wives of Samael, called Esau's heavenly patron, and following his example, Esau himself also took four wives, as explained in the Pentateuch.Baal Shem Tov was said to have summoned Samael to make him do his bidding.Samael is also depicted as the angel of death and one of the seven archangels, the ruler over the Fifth Heaven and commander of two million angels such as the chief of all the destroying angels.According to the apocryphal Gedulat Moshe (The Apocalypse of Moses, "The Ascension of Moses" in The Legends of the Jews by Louis Ginzberg) Samael is also mentioned as being in 7th Heaven:

Different authors attribute various negative acts of ancient Jewish history to him, including: planting the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden; riding or sending the serpent to tempt Eve; impregnating Eve with Cain; attempting to dissuade Abraham from sacrificing Isaac; causing the death of Sarah by informing her of Abraham’s intent to sacrifice Isaac; attempting to kill Jacob while he was still in the womb; arguing before God as the prosecutor against Israel during the Exodus from Egypt; hiding in the Golden Calf; taunting Moses; killing the prophet Isaiah; leading armies of rebellion against God; and receiving the scapegoat offered up on Yom Kippur. At the end of days, it is believed that Samael will be defeated by Michael, chained, and given to Israel to exact justice.
