Before modernity everyone knew the rules of the game so didn't bother with moral grandstanding or appealing to justice and innocence or making excuses. But nowadays everyone is playing the victim. Even if their explicitly stated goal is to exterminate x race or overthrow x class, they still throw a hissy fit and cry oppression when their enemies fight back.

To a point it makes sense, but anytime two parties putatively share a moral framework you'd expect the two-faced dynamic to emerge.
