In terms of raw power and influence, what criminals and criminal organization can be considered the most powerful throughout history? I'm not particularly familiar with the history of organized crime, but I find it hard to imagine that any US-based groups would be near the top of the list since, unlike in Latin America, I've never heard of the Italian Mafia engaging in open warfare with the military or shooting down helicopters with RPGs.
