I like how Scientists will use Science to discover something completely unrelated to ancient desert stories, and then the ancient desert cults will be like, "our books actually knew about RGB cone cells before you did, because the first three chapters of our book start with the letters R G and B."

>>18760674Also the idea that the Bible was meant to be read allegorically is a silly anachronism. Pretty much all Jews and Christians prior to the modern era believed in a literal flood as evidenced by the church fathers and ancient Jewish writers like Josephus citing Berossus as proof a global flood really took place. They only started allegorizing the flood in the early modern period when a historical reading of it became indefensible.Augustine for instance only allegorized the exact meaning of "day" in Genesis, he still believed Adam and Eve were real people and that a global flood really happened. He literally dedicated entire chapters of The City of God (Book XV) to defending the physical dimensions of Noah's Ark against critics who said it wasn't large enough to hold all the animals. In addition, early Christian writers criticized Manetho and Berossus' datings not because they claimed their respective civilizations were tens or hundreds of thousands of years old, but because they claimed the earth was older than 6000 years. Augustine himself explicitly wrote in The City of God (Book XII) that those who claim history goes back tens of thousands of years are telling "mendacious fables" because, according to sacred Scripture, not even 6000 years had passed since the creation of manBiblical literalism wasn’t invented by American Protestants in the 19th century, it was already baked into Christianity from the very start. Allegory only became widespread when it became indefensible to defend a historical Genesis.
