Crushed? They turned into IMF client states. They adopted western institutions and ideas, like the modern one-party state, and allowed such to be turned into the instruments of tyrants. The artifice of foreign influence converged with the interests of local elites, as it had always been, only now with superficial independence and all of the shamelessness and uncompromising freedom for political leadership it comes with. Deaths of millions in a colony is overt occupation, deaths of millions in a nominally independent country with its regime entrenched by foreign interests is considered a local matter.

In exchange for our much needed financial and material support during the war, and defense against communist subversion afterwards, the United States got to dictate the postwar peace. The Atlantic Charter is our document, decolonization was our goal. We wanted free trade, open navigation of the seas, and national self determination so we could liberate those colonized peoples and dominate their countries through soft power and the almighty dollar. Then we defeated communism just to showboat before slipping into the graceful inevitable decline of empire.
