What obsolete technologies do you use?

I keep listening to my CDs.

The CD isn't even obsolete, it still provides the highest quality audio of all available formats. Most lossless files of music floating around online are ripped straight from CDs.

Just because the average consumer is retarded doesn't mean that streaming is the best and "up to date" option

true story, back in the 90s there was a style of ave music called Goa Trance that was big on crunchy analog synths + SOTA digital effects and producers got hooked on DAT because it could deliver 24 bit/48khz audio (the emerging standard of the film world).
This informal hierarchy emerged between your local DJs who spu vinyl and the really cool international DJs/producers who just traveled with a bag of DATs and two DAT walkmen and were known as the DAT mafia

Anyway I don't use DAT any more but I still love my crunchy analog synths

CDs aren't just a storage medium though, they're a release format. You don't buy a movie on a hard drive or SSD.

Vinyl is really a problematic format, and honestly, with most people's equipment, a CD is fine, with SACD probably being on the upper end for your most treasured music. It can sound good, but you need a good pickup, and a decent turntable and a pre-amp, everything has to be completely clean, so there's this dumb as a fuck ritual for getting it ready. I hjad a vinyl collection and gave all of it up, selling everything on Ebay and just getting CDs and SACD.

    >>110216995
SACD, DVD and BluRay audio are probably best audio formats you can play on consumer equipment.

    >>110217233
I wish DAT had taken off, but the problem, like all tape, is it is a sequential, linear medium. You can't instantly jump to track 9 from track 1 like you can with CD audio, or hell, vinyl if you can eyeball it.

I still use Magneto Optical Disks for some backups, but that's mostly for fun.

I still use old word processors, I have containerized versions of Office 2003 and Office 97.

i dont have spotify or whatever else there is. if i like a song / album i look it up on youtube and download it using ytdl than upload it the mp3s to my phone.

I still burn MP3 CDs for my older car. I also listen to vinyl, it's fun.

I get sticking to CDs but have you ever considered putting several dozen dollars into just getting a head unit with BT?
    >>
    >>110217294
    >Vinyl is really a problematic format,
it can be a pain in the ass especially as it ages. brand spankin new records you can rip without problems. after being played a few times (or dozens) you start to lose a bit of dynamic range. i can deal with pops or a little bit of crackle but the loss of dynamic range over time is not great

    >everything has to be completely clean, so there's this dumb as a fuck ritual for getting it ready.
it can be. my direct drive table sits an enclosure so i got no worries there. most of my records are so old that i'm surprised and shocked at times by how good some things from 50+ years ago still sound using my shitty ancient needle. people are way too autistic over vinyl and forget that they were made to be cheaply mass produced and handled by spastics

    >SACD
was pretty good once upon a time. depreciated these days.

    >>SACD
    >was pretty good once upon a time. depreciated these days.
To this day it's better quality than any CD, which itself is better quality than anything you ever got from iTunes and friends, barring lossless streaming which was niche until recently and still comes down to do they support it for that artist.
    >>
    >>110217338
    >getting a head unit with BT?
lossy mp3 -> decodes to raw data packet -> bluetooth -> lossy compresses audio using bt audio codec -> send to head unit -> decodes into worse quality raw data packet -> shat out of a dac

why the fuck would anyone subject themselves to this cancerous nightmare audio solution lmao
    >>
    >>110217434
That was just a suggestion to upgrade your head unit, period. A lot of people even on /g/ don't realize they can just swap it like they can a GPU. You're free to play off of flash drive, SD card, MTP, satellite radio, etc.
    >>
    >>110217430
    >To this day it's better quality than any CD,
it's not really a CD. it's an entirely different format with "CD" slapped on the end of it. It's more closely related to DVD than CD
    >from iTunes and friends
when you have to compare your meme format to itunes then you truly have no fucking idea what you are talking about. itunes etc. used lossy compression codecs. supercd had entirely different (and one was lossless i think) codecs that could support absurdly high sample rates.

are you smoking crack cocaine? i like supercd but your comparisons are hilariously bad and wtf.

    >it's not really a CD
I said better than any CD, not better than any other CD. I never claimed it to be a CD.
    >itunes etc. used lossy compression
Yes, that was the whole point. Retard. The lossless shit you get on SACD is better than the lossy shit you get from iTunes.
    >>
    >>110217473
    >I said better than any CD, not better than any other CD. I never claimed it to be a CD.
sure champ. move the goals into the carpark if you like. makes no difference.
    >Yes, that was the whole point. Retard
you have absolutely no idea how itunes, streaming or sacd works. it's remarkable. please tell me you're not going around telling your friends and family that you're "le audio expert"?

    >>110217460
shut the fuck up, dumb retard
    >>
    >>110217479
    >sure champ. move the goals into the carpark if you like. makes no difference.
That's not how that works. The goalposts are still where I placed them, you're just pretending I moved them because your two extant brain cells are arguing with one another and you're not sure what to do.

    >shut the fuck up, dumb retard
    no u

I don't see how any serious musician can use a DAW, it simply cannot capture audio with full fidelity.

I still have a landline. I get 26 spam calls a day. They use some kind of local name lookup system to make the caller ID show the names of my neighbors to try to trick me. It's pretty smart. I'm waiting for the day I call myself. I literally only have it so I can talk to my grandmother so I don't even answer it unless it's her.

    >>110217496
If you're doing symphonic orchestra yeah, I tried researching for good samples and landed on a pack that cost like 1000 dollaridos and weighed like 10 terabytes.

Blip bloops are excempt and rock/metal fags sound like shit most of the time live anyway.
    >>
    >>110216995
As a physical format maybe, but most artists worth buying their music release 24/44 or 24/48 lossless online.

No. It's shit. CD is unironically better since it doesn't have a massive distortion issue.

Doesn't matter the format, if it's mastered like shit and recorded like shit then no amout of losslessness will help

Finally jannies doing something about shitposters, wish they'd purge frogniggers off /g/ too
    >>
    >>110217631
Absolutely, I just don't think SACD or any 1bit sigma-delta/DSD is better.
To put in bluntly- the highest DR (DR23!) track I have in my 2TB music library, is Reflections of You from Make up City (1980) by CASIOPEA - it's from the original CD release. a 1980 properly mastered track beats literally everything else I've got.
CD is still fine for everything, since mastering just sucks all round be it incompetence or straight up malice to make things more 'punchy'
