is selfhosting worth it or just a meme
>>110213990This is an idiotic question. Of course it is. If you have the hardware and network resources for what you want to host, it is far superior to using a similar service that is locked away on a server you don't control.
Don't forget to backup your data.
>>110213990take that RPI you have collecting dust and find out. host a git. make a music server. make a NAS for all your faggot tranny porn you use to hide in the closet.
i dont selfhost because i dont use online services at all
>>110214029You can also rent a virtual server you control. That has some benefits like more reliable internet connectivity and not having to deal with failing disks and UPS batteries. If money wasn't an issue I would go with that for most things.
>>110213990I guess I self-host my own DBsI was thinking about setting up Bitwarden or some shit but I decided that I'd just write down anything important enough
>>110213990Self hosting is great, but you need the hardware and I guess it's not easy enough that anyone can do it. I did it the hard way and built my own server and set up vanilla Debian with multiple ZFS pools, which definitely takes time to learn. But you can buy one of those shitty prebuilts off Amazon that probably cost a fortune now that all computer parts have doubled to 5xed in price. I'm pretty lucky I built this thing in early 2024.
>>110214329>need the hardwarenigger go to the dump and find a computer with a nic. >nooo i need 40 pedobytes for all my tranny porn and 10gb ethernet because. because okay!!!!!!!
>>110213990it's a joke and dunnig-kruger intellectual masturbationplebbit basedjack performative activityintricate bullshit to solve simple problems you probably didn't haveindustry level equipment to stash porn or other basedkaf>>110214113 literally admits to itnobody listens to music or watches video via a fucking jellyfinuhhh you don't own your google drivemount it and rsync every evening if you care chud
>>110213990depends what you host.I don't pay for cloud storage, password managers or any streaming services.I haven't actually added up my total cost for hardware to see at what point i'd have broken even but might do that at some point.
>>110214191you don't control it if it is not in your physical possession
>>110214803i can assure you that i control your mom and i don't know where she is right now.
>>110214558added up my hardware cost in a spreadsheet and then had gemini chart that against streaming services costs, bitwarden with 2fa and 44TB of cloud storage per month.break even in under 8 months without factoring in electricity since I don't pay it.i'm not actually using the full 44tb but its there if i need it.
>>110214830ok you could have also just not paid for a bunch of services you didn't actually use....
>>110214834but then I can't watch the shows I want to watch or store my JAVs.added electricity cost at 17p/kw with idle draw of around 110w and break even goes to 8.3 months.
what happens when all HSGcucks get robbed by nigger and dey home serva gets stolen and sold for parts on FB marketplace?did you back up your data to an external cloud provider? that you paid for and don't control?
>>110213990sysadmin larp for people who don’t SWE kek!!! anon, do you know that there is literally no difference between your computer that you’re clickity clacking on right this second and a “server” right? a server is just a computer that serves stuff. it’s a term of convenience, not a descriptor of something different than any computer. you can just double click the mp3 on your pc, you don’t need to serve it via open sore software from some other hippity hoppity le heckin cool gizmo box!!!11
>>110213990I don't really see the difference between 2 and 3
>>110214481I listen to my music on Navidrome and stream movies/anime from Jellyfin directly into mpv, faggot
>>110215261it makes pseuds feel like hackers so it has some purpose I guess
>>110214191>You can also rent a virtual server you control.much more expensive>like more reliable internet connectivitywhen was the last time your home internet connection went out?>not having to deal with failing disks and UPS batteriesdidn't happensame could be said with any of your computers>If money wasn't an issue I would go with that for most things.you never went over the numbers
>>110214191>doesn't already have a upsit's like $40 for a new battery every 5 years or so after the initial purchase and it keeps your Internet running when someone knocks a pole down/runs into a power box (we had a squirrel get in the box and take out several blocks power once)>HDD failureI've had one disk in my NAS die in like ten years and it was still on warranty
>>110214374I have roughly 28 terabytes for my tranny porn, but it's not even 1/3 full yet. Buying used is not acceptable to me. Maybe it is to you.
>dockernormie shit
>>110214481>rsync (lol) from some random cloud server that could delete your pirated material at literally any point in time for any reasonLiteral tech caveman logic. Your system is more complex and clunky and unsafe long term than just setting up a home server and hosting media on it.
>>110214834Storage alone will destroy your asshole dummy.
Ran a Nextcloud instance on a VM for two friends. Had a registered domain for two years, I recall looking up how to set up an online radio they can tune in to 24/7. Only one of them used it once so I let the cert expire. Basically ghosted now by both.
>>110213990i was stage 1 when i was a literal child with no money and skipped straight to stage 3
>>110213990if you are working 8-5 job and you are a normal person with children. its only worth self-hosting a plex server with movies you ripped or downloaded manually and maybe a shared file hosting. Everything else is a time sink unless you want to do it. You will still pay for netflix or whatever your household uses anyway. If you are not a normgroid self-hosting is great also you have extra time to spend dealing with annoying bullshit that might arise.
