This is the computer that controls Spain's high-speed rail system. Say something nice about it.

and get rid of the SOVL? nah
    >>
unfortunately the "modern" replacement wont be an improvement
aka a 900 gigabyte React file running on electron
you open it up and it starts sending and receiving 50 megabytes per second of json to random telemetry servers
what does this telemetry data include? information about passengers to sell to advertisers
"modern" software just means making data available to advertisers
hope you liked my ted talk blog

that's not a very nice thing to say

is it better than the logic in factorio's rail system?

    fine enough.
the problem with the ave is its own purpouse, it never made sense as a transport system, spain doesn't have nor the size nor the geography adequate for a high speed train, a network on 200km/h would have been more than enough, outside maybe madrid-barcelona, and those more bc of the conexion also with paris than anything else
the system was already flawed, but the retarded openness and requites of the eu overloaded it.
so every government involved in the ave and the eu are at fault here
but it was " alta velocidad española"! not any high speed train, it was specifically spanish! being it a flagship of the spanish nationalism (more like castillian or madrilean, as it was also the maximum expponen of the only real important part is madrid, the rest of the country are accesories of it, but still) made this nonsensical project a priority for every government, and retardly enough for the regions to get one, even if their regular trains were a fucking mess and it mostly benefited madrid

my personal view is that we should have betted on having a middle speed train system with the old gauge, and adapted the old train infrastructure to be able to work in way higher. there are plenty of part of the conventional long distance network limited to sub 80k/h speeds.

that is not true, that is the times some parts of it has been down, most of them is for maintenance works. only 40 something are for actual failures of the system, and were mostly sensors and physical shit
The failure is having humans as a backup in a terrible situation that seems like a fucking call center in calcuta

No, using a computer that looks like it's from the fucking 70s as the only safety system between a wrong order and a full speed collision is not ok.
If it wasn't a bureocratic shithole and a single organization ran the whole thing instead of multiple operators all having their lines and interoperating based on standards which are impossible to change because they're written into law, they would have installed at least additional independent safety systems that were truly redundant, like battery powered beacons that detected nearby trains and gave a warning when another on the same track was getting too close too fast like planes have, a display on the cockpit with the last known location of other trains on a map, or real interlocks that prevented the trains from going at high speeds if not all the active trains on that line were accounted for in the system. As it stands even if there were well intended engineers nobody would allow them to work on building something that because of red tape and underhiring, that's why they barely could get the thing to work at all, because it was all based on ancient protocols with hardware from multiple manufacturers all made decades apart. I saw a youtube video where they showed the procedures the guy from the control room was reading in the leaked audios, you can tell they were written by some MBA type outside consultant based on the opinions of some higher up and it had very little to do with reality and there was no way anyone could change it based on learned experience.
That's what happens when technical tasks are directed by business people instead of technical people.

Oh, you're not interested in malfunctioning computer systems causing dozens of deaths too?
This might be second to the incorrectly wired Chinese rocket, unless we also count the Max.

Looks pretty cool. Why can't consumer grade hardware look as cool as this?
    >>
Why do they have to be huge? Why can't you control it from a regular desktop? It's space efficient and saves power

You're going to vote in a Zionist government and you'll only realize once it's too late.
    >>
    >>110209819
It's managed by a private company though? The government has nothing to do with this.
    >>
    >>110212113
Yes, it's managed by Cylus, an israel company.
    >>
    >>110210331
Privately managed by a gazillion "free market" vultures. If it was centrally managed by the government ithere would not be a problem.
    >>
    >>110209804
you will get hacked by Israel by the end of the year

you should see what we use in space critical shit. old industrial stuff is super reliable, and that shit doesnt need power or efficiency
    >>
    >>110213800
Spaceflight computers, besides basic things like not firing rockets or opening valves to space at the wrong time only needs things to work for a few crucial minutes and the job is to guide a rocket on a scripted path and to control engine parameters.
Trains on the other hand need to be safe 24/7 and idiot proof, which means it needs redundant safety interlocks and good UX to provide situational awareness.
It's a very similar situation to things like aviation with things like TCAS, ground radar, electronic checklists, better ground maps, weather radar, etc. Most of these things appeared or were improved significantly after 70s technology.
And in this case it clearly wasn't reliable since it had faults anywhere from every other day to 20 times a day depending on who you listen to, and ultimately allowed the controllers to kill 64 people without any kind of warning.
