‼ French lawmakers voted for an internet traffic tax that the makers of VLC say would cost them more than €1M a year.

Content providers would pay €0.055 for every gigabyte sent to French users, as counted by ISPs. Its Socialist authors expect €10B a year.

The government opposed it, warning that about half the bill would fall on smaller providers, many of them French.

It passed 11 votes to 10, with 35 of 577 deputies present.

Why does every draconian internet restriction come from and is pioneered in Europe? Specifically EU countries.
>>
>>110209648
Can't they just distribute it via torrent?
>>
>>110209648
This is a good thing though
>>
France has no money.
>>
the makers of vlc (also x264 etc) can move their shit to usa or anywhere else (like romania)
>>
>>110209724
You'd have to ban France from all streaming platforms.

There are 577 deputies, but they only voted with 35 present? How many is a quorum? That's absurd!

Don't worry, it has to actually pass a full vote of the parliament to become law.
>>
It needs to pass a parliamentary consideration. Then a senate. It can still be amended or removed at any stage. Stop listening to Xitter griters so much.
>>
>>110209648
can we get a list of names on whoever made and voted for this?
those niggers needs some vibecheck
>>
>>110209732
while nothing of value would be lost, i hope they use the last days of their internet presence to shill this law to jeets so we can get rid of both
>>
>>110209648
it's capped at 15% of revenue
does VLC have any revenue? all they do is make a free media player that for some reason decided to start taking 10 seconds to load
>>
>>110209765
in a properly functioning country, the guy who came up with this stupid idea should just be a retard screaming into the void with no sane person wanting to listen to him
that the government pay any notice to these crazies at all means it's already over
>>
>>110210061
That's because of microslop diarrhea 11
>>
>>110209648
Not only is this impossible to enforce outside of France, it would just make French users set up outside of France, and any attempt to collect outside of French jurisdiction will just result in France being IP banned.

Based on what I've heard this seems like France desperately trying to generate positive cash flow.

I don't have a sfw image right now that is relevant so have an intake manifold.
>>
>>110209648
It's for commercial traffic only. So it doesn't affect the upload of normal people, p2p etc. (this won't stop retarded anons from not reading and just bithcing about it ofc)
It's also limited to 15% of annual revenue. Though there is some discussion about whether this affects non-profit companies.

But really, since most digital services are foreign anyway, fuck em.

>pays 1m in fines for pirating a HBO show
>>

It's actually capped at 2% worldwide revenue or 15% french revenue, whichever is the lowest. It's a disguised but really basic revenue tax for content providers but the illiterate won't read past the clickbait titles.

>>110209648
Just dont' pay them wtf. Those companies aren't even in France. France you dumb fucks. Get it together! Migrants are setting your whole country on fire.
>>
>>110209706
maybe they should stop giving all their money away to fucking migrants then.
