I'm not talking about a proprietary one later made open source, im talking about one intended to be open source & community developed from the start. Potentially with a governing non profit organization administering it, like there is with other free software alternatives (linux, gnu, kde, etc.).It could be made self hostable by default but with popular servers hosted by larger organizations. Every server could be compiled with their own set of feature patches. But all servers would share the same fundamental framework.Imagine anyone could make a patch that adds a new dungeon to world of warcraft or a new skill to runescape. It would be quite cool i think, no?

>>110207444 (checked)No use case.
>>110207449im not looking to do it myself im more just wondering why a project like this never came to be when we have free alternatives for every other proprietary software

>>110207444MMOs need a playerbase and with open source your playerbase is fragmented by design
>>110207444There are several. Ryzom, The Mana World, Stendhal, etc.
>>110207797No, the problem is that all MMOs committed suicide and became pure singleplayer experiences (solo is the single most efficient way to play, the only "interaction" you have with people is to railroad dungeons every so often which just automatches you with others so they may as well be NPCs).When FlyFF reopened with a almost entirely vanilla experience in 2023(?), it got 800k users active. Now it's down to about 300k and holding. The only thing that's not true to MMO nature is that people use personal shops to advertise discords, or to tell people to reach out to them on discord to setup trades, which really sucks. Discord did a number on videogame communication and really fucked shit up.Eitherway, the point is that despite FlyFF being niche and frankly not a great MMO, it still ends up with a large playerbase despite ancient mechanics and graphics, and those are largely not just nostalgiafags. OSRS is a frankenabomination, but in spirit it's the same thing. And then wow original, same thing, and again maplestory og, and dofus og, etc. All the MMOs are doing that because the problem is that nuMMOs just play suck. Everything else is an excuse.

There are plenty. Even I have made one shitty open source MMORPG engine that includes a world editor, client, stress testing client and the server.
This has happened already but you're failing to realize it.WoW and EverQuest (and probably others that I didn't observe) both generated fan-based open-source projects during the 2000s that reverse-engineered servers and network infrastructure that would function with the client software. In both cases, as soon as the project was within striking distance of a launchable product, the individuals who recognized this made allies with those capable of creating the missing puzzle pieces and took their codebase private. The reason is that there is a limited amount of money to be made so a self-interested person with sufficient intelligence gravitates towards eliminating excess feeders from the trough.
>>1102074441. It's a huge and technically difficult endeavor.2. Maintaining the infrastructure can be costly.3. Freetards don't have taste outside of the code (i.e. almost every OSS looks like shit) and it's hard to attract people from other disciplines to work for free.
>>110207444This is the meta plot of Sword Art Online lmao

I'd love an MMO like RuneScape that focused entirely on the horizontal progression of the skill system, but stretch it out over "200m" exp instead of 1-99, if you get the RS reference to gameplay style. Make a provision that over the course of a year no 1 skill or training method can increase in efficiency more than ~2% from all updates to the game and now you have a MMO that will last 30+ years, with a curated update path that doesn't invalidate your progression if you miss 2 years due to IRL shit.I mean, there probably is enough free and open parts for programming - especially with the rise of AI coding - that i could cobble something like this together, but i think my autistic view of what makes a game good is a rare thing.

>>110207444Because it's not the game itself that's hard to maintain, it's server upkeep running 24/7 for all the players. An open source project is not going to have the funding to maintain that

>>110218228his example isn't perfect, but the point is that some people do just want to make the world a better place.lots of foss was made with no intention of making money or fame off of it, and are provided purely for the common good. as the idea of foss is getting more popular, we're starting to see more people who don't really get this. there's more and more cases of people who release software under say MIT who get mad when someone forks their project, which tells me they don't understand what foss is
>>110218308The idea that you suddenly aren't making the world a better place if you charge for your services is retardedPeople have bills to pay
>>110218314you can sell foss, often foss is monetised in other ways, like providing support or some kind of added convenient option depending on what it is (like say release the core software as foss but maybe have some frontend that isn't, or provide the software source code for free but the prebuilt/app store versions cost money)from the start even in the gpl it's made clear that it's not about being free of cost.people do regularly pay for software which is foss

>>110218351Feeding the world doesn't mean feeding the world with 0 input funds. Cornering the market specifically means nobody else can provide beans of any kind. Why are you zoomers literally illiterate?
>>110218351selling foss is a bit different to selling proprietary software. with foss (at least with the gpl), the source code has to be made freely available (when providing binaries, be it charged or not), historically there are provisions in there for allowing for charging for the cost of obtaining the source code (i.e. things like mailing discs), though that's not a thing anymore because we have things like github who will host it for free nowadays.you could try offering only the source code for a fee, though there's nothing stopping someone who buys it from sharing it to others, it wouldn't be foss if they couldn't. i doubt this'd work in practice since most normal people have no use for the source code itself, it's better to charge for binaries
>>110218379If you read the previous replies we were talking about volunteersStop being a dishonest retard
>>110218391You can use the fee to account for competition risk also. Like for example it is allowable to request a $10000 fee for source access for GPL software you otherwise provide only compiled. That is for GPLv3 only, for v2 you can only charge for the fee of distribution. I actually don't know why nobody is leveraging this because it's a good middleground so long as you have someone good to do the impact modeling to set the price correctly. Ultimately it's not really any different than selling a share in your business in that way.
>>110218432One person could simply pay the fee then upload it online for everyone else to use
