I'm not talking about a proprietary one later made open source, im talking about one intended to be open source & community developed from the start. Potentially with a governing non profit organization administering it, like there is with other free software alternatives (linux, gnu, kde, etc.).It could be made self hostable by default but with popular servers hosted by larger organizations. Every server could be compiled with their own set of feature patches. But all servers would share the same fundamental framework.Imagine anyone could make a patch that adds a new dungeon to world of warcraft or a new skill to runescape. It would be quite cool i think, no?
>>110207444Why not make it yourself? Just plug in Claude and let it rip dood.
>>110207444What's the point when hacking it would be trivial.
>>110207444because open source is just communism. if you dont have big dick making the decisions and clamping down on hoes. it just turns to shit. thats why linux went to shit once linus stopped being very abrasive. freetards just got lucky for so long that he wasn't a push over until recently
>>110207444 (checked)No use case.
>>110207449im not looking to do it myself im more just wondering why a project like this never came to be when we have free alternatives for every other proprietary software
>>110207451online games validate things on the server sidethere is nothing to hack unless you have access to the literal server machine
crossfirefusionfall via openfusion (we have pretty much all the assets now iirc)stendhaland a few others probably.
>>110207444because mmos are the hardest games to make from scratch and all the rich people are basically selfish pedofiles that would rather shit in the mouth of some minor amongst their friends on a yacht while fleecing the goyim to make their bank acc number go up even more than pay a dozen million and spend time and passion on making literally anything good for the general dirty peasant pleb public, let alone making a video game.
>>110207444>Imagine anyone could make a patch that adds a new dungeon to world of warcraftPservers do this already
>>110207512yeah but with significantly more effort than it should take. Also they get taken down eventually due to legal

>>110207457Technically every WoW Pserver that is running 3.3.5a and versions below is open sourced now.
Ryzom is open source and still running. There was another one but it is not as popular.
i don't think anyone plays mmorpgs anymore, that was a millennial thing and millennials don't have time to play games anymore and zoomers are playing fortnite and roblox on their phones

>>110208004If you were developing a game with a closed team why would you make it FOSS
>>110208004>governing non profit organizationsi didn't mean they would own the software anon. I'm just referring to a group of volunteers who would manage the PRs and such like there is with every other large FOSS software. Everyone would be free to fork at any time of course.
>>110208022>a group of volunteerswhy would anyone competent work for free?
>>110208010I have no idea what you even mean, FOSS is just any software that respects the four user freedoms, it says nothing about how you manage its development, plenty of good FOSS sofware with closed development like SQLite.>>110208022>such like there is with every other large FOSS softwareAll those large FOSS software are garbage exactly because they have powertripping volunteers organized around a bureacratic framework (usually a non-profit organization as you said), all the good projects use a BDFL or a freeform community.
>>110208029idk why dont you go ahead and email literally any of the hundreds of FOSS maintainers in existence and ask them why they do it
>>110208054And why would you "respect the four user freedoms"What do game developers gain from that
>>110208056I can't be bothered doing that, I'm not a freetard, but as someone with a developed skillset I'd never waste my time working for free unless I was getting something else out of it
>>110208058Generally FOSS developers are also users of their own software, it is very much on their own interest to respect their own freedoms.

>>110207444MMOs need a playerbase and with open source your playerbase is fragmented by design
>>110207444There are several. Ryzom, The Mana World, Stendhal, etc.
>>110207797No, the problem is that all MMOs committed suicide and became pure singleplayer experiences (solo is the single most efficient way to play, the only "interaction" you have with people is to railroad dungeons every so often which just automatches you with others so they may as well be NPCs).When FlyFF reopened with a almost entirely vanilla experience in 2023(?), it got 800k users active. Now it's down to about 300k and holding. The only thing that's not true to MMO nature is that people use personal shops to advertise discords, or to tell people to reach out to them on discord to setup trades, which really sucks. Discord did a number on videogame communication and really fucked shit up.Eitherway, the point is that despite FlyFF being niche and frankly not a great MMO, it still ends up with a large playerbase despite ancient mechanics and graphics, and those are largely not just nostalgiafags. OSRS is a frankenabomination, but in spirit it's the same thing. And then wow original, same thing, and again maplestory og, and dofus og, etc. All the MMOs are doing that because the problem is that nuMMOs just play suck. Everything else is an excuse.

There are plenty. Even I have made one shitty open source MMORPG engine that includes a world editor, client, stress testing client and the server.
This has happened already but you're failing to realize it.WoW and EverQuest (and probably others that I didn't observe) both generated fan-based open-source projects during the 2000s that reverse-engineered servers and network infrastructure that would function with the client software. In both cases, as soon as the project was within striking distance of a launchable product, the individuals who recognized this made allies with those capable of creating the missing puzzle pieces and took their codebase private. The reason is that there is a limited amount of money to be made so a self-interested person with sufficient intelligence gravitates towards eliminating excess feeders from the trough.
>>1102074441. It's a huge and technically difficult endeavor.2. Maintaining the infrastructure can be costly.3. Freetards don't have taste outside of the code (i.e. almost every OSS looks like shit) and it's hard to attract people from other disciplines to work for free.
>>110207444This is the meta plot of Sword Art Online lmao

I'd love an MMO like RuneScape that focused entirely on the horizontal progression of the skill system, but stretch it out over "200m" exp instead of 1-99, if you get the RS reference to gameplay style. Make a provision that over the course of a year no 1 skill or training method can increase in efficiency more than ~2% from all updates to the game and now you have a MMO that will last 30+ years, with a curated update path that doesn't invalidate your progression if you miss 2 years due to IRL shit.I mean, there probably is enough free and open parts for programming - especially with the rise of AI coding - that i could cobble something like this together, but i think my autistic view of what makes a game good is a rare thing.

>>110207444Because it's not the game itself that's hard to maintain, it's server upkeep running 24/7 for all the players. An open source project is not going to have the funding to maintain that
