Onyx Picco arrived. e-Reader thread?
>>110202054Any good A5-sized e-readers that don't cost a fortune and support adding my own epub and pdf files without having to jump through hurdles?
>>110202068no
>>110202054Very nice. First impressions? What's the current meta in tiny ereaders? XTEink still a worthy contender, or is it game over now that Onyx entered the field?Love my Note Air 3. IMO perfect form factor for most use, though I've been thinking of getting a tiny one like this for pocket carry.
>>110202075Is it any good for browsing 4chan? I'm thinking about getting the Air 6, mainly for note-taking, but it would be nice if it could also allow for more eye-friendly shitpostan.
>>110202075First impressions are mainly that the backlight on the Picco is nice to have (since I have an X3 rather than an X4 Pro). The rendering of text on menus isn't great, but it looks fine in books. Picco has none of the slow "indexing" that XTEink (at least on my older version) has changing chapters or opening a new book. Touch screen makes menus less clunky. The screen on the Picco is a tad smaller, it is noticeable but I need to use it more before I decide if it's a deal breaker. Also need to see how the battery life is on this thing (Onyx's first Linux-based OS?) compared to XTEink that lasts forever.>What's the current meta in tiny ereaders? My X3 has been great but apparently I have one of the older USB-C versions? Read they changed that for some bullshit reason or something.>>110202068I'll sound like an Onyx fan boy but their Go/Poke versions are small, not expensive, can read epubs just fine and PDFs okay, and you can load them just by plugging in via USB and dragging and dropping.
>>110203631I should add for the meta, if it's not well known already, that XTEink 100% requires CrossPoint or it's dog shit for anything not Chinese. The Picco is good out of the box for Latin languages.
>>110202054what's a good bigger one for someone with shit eyesight
>>110203655a sturdy rope and a stool
>>110202054I bought a Kobo Clara BW and kind of regret it desu, it’s not worth the price for how many features it lacks. Don’t really use it that much
>>110204076Oh, how edgy you little faggot.
Still using the same 13 year old Kobo Aura I've always used. It still works as good as it ever did. Anyone who buys anything more is just a consumer retard. If you want any more functionality than reading a book just use your phone or a laptop dumbass.
>>110203595Personally I've been keeping mine mostly offline, and primarily use it for reading and sheet music. But it should be fine for 4chinz. The handwriting-to-text recognition is incredible, so it should allow for shitposting with style.>>110203631>I have one of the older USB-C versions? Read they changed that for some bullshit reason or something.Yeah, saw they have a proprietary charger, while the Picco has USB C, which is a big plus. But then I heard Boox is requiring some sort of custom ebook format for this device? Or is it still possible to load standard EPUBs, or even flash a custom ROM?
Kobo Clara BW masterrace best thing i ever bought
>>110204102try reading a book nigger
>>110205844I read plenty, I just don’t want an overhyped brick with less features than a flip phone, even reading on computer screens is so much better than a kobo
Just threw a new battery in my Boox Max 2 and I keep forgetting it works now
>Look it up>Advertising it on the back of your phoneWhat's the use case when you can just read on your phone at that point? I like other e-readers because they're slightly larger and more comfortable to hold than my phone.
>>110206112ePaper
>>110204487I've loaded my epubs on the Picco, it seems quite normal. Though, having to use BooxTiles is an annoying step. Apparently people have started flashing CrossPoint, so I'll probably give that a go this weekend.
Reading is stupid.
I have a Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation) (or 6th gen, not sure). Is there any reason to upgrade? Any noticeable benefits? I enjoy it, but I don't mind upgrading to something else.
>>110202054dont those Onyx readers run Android? They seem like cool devices but I would worry about long term support. Android allows for better capabilities, but its less stable than the custom linux OSes that Kindle and Kobo use.
>>110204076You sir, win the internetz.
>>110208585awesomesauce
>>110208488If you're comfortable with it, not really. The gains of each new e-reader are marginal to non-existent. There's room to do better with the colour on the, uh, colour versions but there doesn't seem to be that much progress there either. Colours still look very washed out, even now.>>110208534Yes, though the Picco is the first that doesn't. But my WiFi is always off on my larger e-reader, so I'm not even worried about lack of support.
>>110202068all eInk screens are made by the same company so the price doesn't vary. It turns out that manufacturing eink screens is very difficult so it's not likely that anyone else will get in the game. until a new technology with easier manufacturing emerges eink will stay more expensive than it should be.
all i really want from an ereader is a processor that isn't dog-ass slow. Pocketbook is the most open/accessible device that isn't cheap trash. I like it just fine but it's too slow. Hopefully these all get hacked via AI and better software that runs faster comes out. I'm sure the software on all of these are made by lazy jeets and they could perform better.
>>110202068Boox Go 10.3 Gen 2 costs around $400, slightly more for the front lit version.
Are these things good for reading manga?
>>110209197The Pico is way too small but a 13" e-reader is well suited for manga.
Unrelated but man I wish a real manufacturer made an e-ink phone, they're all minimalist bullshit with 5 buttons, or chinese with like android 12 and 0 support or bug fixing after launch.
>>110209220I almost bought a Yotaphone 2 when they were new, always been curious how shit that would've been software wise.
>>110209220What real non-Chinese manufacturers are left? Apple, Samsung and maybe Sony.
>>110209237I'm not against Chinese manufacturers like xiaomi brands, huawei, oppo group, but the tier 5 ones no one's ever heard of
>>110209248I have a Xaomi e-ink clock and you can't even set the time without registering in some bullshit app.
>>110209197The larger models are probably the optimal way to read manga.
>>110209197>TLDR:if you do struggle with seeing text on printed books you should probably avoid anything smaller than 10" e-readerIMO how good your vision is matters more. I got a 7" e-reader and its completely comfortable for me, but I see reviews online of people saying its too small. Also the slow refresh rate means its harder to zoom-then-pan around a page.>Tankoubon sized LN and 16:9 11" laptop for comparison.~10" model would make a digital manga page reasonably close to the actual size in a printed book considering it will have a "paper-like" aspect ratio.
>>110210349>considering it will have a "paper-like" aspect ratio. It's not optimal, e-ink is 4:3 while manga is sqrt(2):1, hence the pillarboxing in your image. You also need to consider that manga is normally read two pages at a time and therefore even 10" is smaller than print.
I have a boox go 10.3 gen 2 since past winter. I like it so far. The screen is a bit too gray, if it were more white it would have been perfect because the text isn't deep black so the contrast isn't optimal.
>>110210731I use it to read books, I don't read mangas. I've chosen 10" because sometimes I read pdfs with pictures.
>>110210731Text shouldn't be deep black.
>>110210851Right but I'm talking about contrast. If the screen is gray you need a deeper black. All is fine on direct sunlight. The backlight doesn't look very good but I'm glad I have it because under artificial light or low ambient light the screen doesn't look very readable with the backlight off.
>>110210731>>110210751I have the previous gen b/w boox air and i love it. I am very happy i purchased it before they went all color on the air.b/w is found all i need for pdfs and books be they epub or a scan.
>>110210628nta but 10" is very comfortable to read manga. 8" is perfect for single-page reading, though single-page reading itself isn't the best for manga (but it's serviceable)
>>110211173With 10" I regularly have to zoom in to read ruby and similar fine print.
>>110211173Original anon here, I thought the other post was just a bot hallucinating so I ignored it. When you guys say "double page" are you referring to splash pages or two actual whole pages? Scanlators stitch the splash pages into a single file and most modern mobile readers have in-app settings to auto rotate splash pages and display them in landscape.Websites and app readers default to single page; Double page is a minority.
>>110211587>Websites and app readers default to single page; Double page is a minority. Not in Japanese.
>>110211601>Not in Japanese.I only use DLsite for japanese raws and their crappy reader is single page long scroll
I read a lot of PDF's, mostly textbooks.I do not use anything but pdf's, and conversion often fucks with formattingI do not need note takingBattery life and screen size/resolution are what matters to me.What is the best e-reader for me?
>>110211646>Battery lifeAnything Android just went out the window
>>110211587Even outside of spread pages you're expected to see two pages at once and will miss out of you only see half of the full picture.
>>110202054is the onyx better? I don't get why I should pay 30€ more.
>>110211691your example is a splash page
>>110211623DLsite is the one shop that doesn't use epub and I'd only recommend using it for pdf and similar DRM-free content. But even should the web reader not default to opened view, it's not hard to switch. The only issue is that since they don't use epub, you have to fix broken alignment instead of relying on the meta data.
>>110211734It's not a spread since there's an obvious gap in the middle and nothing in the art crosses from one side to the other. And even with spreads you sometimes can't tell it's a spread if you only see the right half.
>>110211587>When you guys say "double page" are you referring to splash pages or two actual whole pages?both. but when I download a manga and pages are stitched together I split them myself so that I only have single pages, since the reader app I use on my Note Air 4C will display them together anyway. I always read in double page mode on it
>>110211779Wouldn't it make more sense to join the single pages instead of splicing the spreads only to join them again?
>>110211804no because I also read those mangas on different devices, some too small to comfortably display 2 pages at once (for example, my Kobo Sage). I like to keep things the same between all devices, and it's less work for me to split a few pages and have the device adjust the way it displays them rather than stitching everything just for one device and keeping things split for othersslightly different example but I also vibecoded myself an ExHentai reader/downloader/gallery thing to use on my laptop and it also displays in double-page mode, I believe most apps and programs at least have an option to do this nowadays
>>110202054i have a bigme b7 color its a really comfy for manga, battery is quite a lot worse than my clara hd due to running android though but i dont mind too much. colour is worth it even if its not amazing its nice when you get a coloured page every now and again>>110205801clara hd is better the internal storage can be upgrade. something none of the new kobos support due to used soldered nand chips>>110210349> I got a 7" e-reader and its completely comfortable for me, but I see reviews online of people saying its too smallsame i love 7 inches i dont get why people says this size is too small its perfect for me, i think my previous kobo was actually under 7 inches still great for manga, i think its because some people like reading with double page spreads
>>110212427You probably got it mainly for reading novels and only read manga once in a while. If you're getting a device specifically for manga you'll likely care more about reading manga as intended and getting the best options available instead of compromising that hard.
>>110213668no i only read manga thats what i got it for
xteink
>>110202054What OS does it run? Can I run vim? Mutt? OpenSSH?
Reminder that there's nothing wrong with buying a kindle so long as you can jailbreak it
>>110213778>so long as you can jailbreak itFuck jailbreaking. If I have to break into MY OWN FUCKING DEVICE then you failed to deliver and I shouldn't have to pay for it.
>>110202054Kobo Libra Color. Well supported by Calibre, works fully offline once you edit an INI file over MTP, stock software seems perfectly adequate. 32GB is enough for all the epubs you could ever read.
>>110214147You don't have to jailbreak it, it's just that jailbreaking makes it a better product
>>110202068Remarkable2 once you drop pricy. RCU covers transfer well.
God damnit I should've bought this when it was on amazon a few days ago. The only reviews I could find were reddit bitching but I should've just written that off as their usual faggotry
>>110209184Pocketbook is slow? What do you need it to be fast for exactly? Its so slow that even menus and reading is hindered by that?
e-readers are so uselessfor anything at home a normal tablet is better for going out to the park to chill and read a softcover paperback off thriftbooks for $7.99 that you can just throw in the recycle bin after it gets too dog-eared or put in the community library is 90000000x better >"but i want to take my entire library with me on a trip/vacation/to the park" oh, you need to read 300 books on your vacation?such a stupid concept. if you have eye strain using a normal screen there's red filters and addressing your retinol deficiency maybe you just screwing around in calibre, the most annoying to use and poorly designed epub manager app ever, then go for it, i guess
>>110202054was thinking about small eink reader. what's your experience?
>>110213736Not entirely sure. It's been described as a "custom fork of CrossPoint".>>110215452Long story short, I bought one as a meme, it was shit until CrossPoint, and now I'm surprised to find myself reading on it every day during commutes and lunch breaks. Because I live close to work, I don't bring a bag, and stuffing a pocket with my Onyx Go is a bit of a hassle for such a short journey. So to my surprise, this has found a niche. (It's also one of the few bits of recent tech that people (even strangers) ask "what's that?", I guess because it's so small.)
>>110212427a new color eink display has been recently released. anyone have any real photos of it? supposedly colors are way better
>>110205801Totally agree. Coupled with Standard EBooks it has meant an unlimited supply of well formatted classics for me.I have owned it for three months and my reading time skyrocketed. It is now a part of my daily bedtime routine.https://standardebooks.org/
>>110216269Probably not new, but I did see this e-reader recently and was surprised that the colours don't look like they've been through a wash cycle a thousand times.
>>110216345Okay, so the news was this:>E Ink has launched Kaleido 4, a new generation of its colour e-paper that doubles the colour gamut volume of Kaleido 3, used in the likes of the reMarkable Paper Pro>Kaleido 3 offers 300ppi in black and white and 150ppi in color, according to E Ink, but E Ink has not yet published exact resolution figures or panel sizes for Kaleido 4>>The first device to use the new technology is Hanvon Technology’s M10C II note-taking tablet
>>110216869That doesn't sound right since the reMarkable Paper Pro doesn't use Kaleido technology.
>>110216869damn wtf i thought kaleido 4 was never coming which is why i finally bit the bullet on kaleido 3 a few months back
>>110202054What should I do with my Tolino that I got from a yard trash and made working again? It's quite hackable inside is an SD card with the OS on it that you can just modify.I don't read books btw.
