What's the point in making any software closed source when it can just be instantly re-written in Rust with AI?
>>
Video game devs are asking this exact question now, and how you actually make a living at it going forward.

Or if the slop grenades she keep falling until you're not buying the game, you're buying access to the hardware infrastructure that you MUST connect to in order to play the game.

Maybe STADIA wasn't about getting poors access to higher end gaming components at the cost of latency. Maybe it was someone who saw the writing on the wall about closed source software becoming 3% of the market share it is now.

>>
Has any moderately complex closed source program been reversed engineers where the company who produced it had a no AI policy?

Can AI only reverse engineer what's in its training data, legally or illegally?
>>
>>110187958
>Video game devs are asking this exact question now, and how you actually make a living at it going forward.
Video games are the safest from AI as there is a lot more to a game then the code and the functionality. The art, music, and "fun" are more important. The people who should be worried are all the sass webapps that never should have existed in the first place.
>>
>>110188020
and fuck do you do with slopped crabshit shovelware be it in any fucking license?
>>
>>110188029
Distaste for devs aside, if 60% of our R&D Atime and costs are going into obfustication at execution time, the real answer here is to move execution off thenenduser's machine. Obviously, if a video feed of the screen is enough to replicate the functionality, you're kind of boned, but for the rest, well...

I guess it's good none of us will be able to afford a home pc anymore, right?
>>
"instantly rewritten"

It's accelerated not something any ai can 1 shot
>>
>>110188069
People are already yanking demos off of steam peior to a game release for smaller indie titles. Shit like Epden Ring may have a moat due to sheer volume of assets, but weirder indie shit in 2D is done. There is nothing outside AAA going forward, and they already love live service games.

Maybe we can do shareware so people can supplement their main income stream at a grocery store.
>>
>>110188086
Obfuscation won't help if your company uses AI.
>>
>>110188067
Do you mean have people reverse engineered complex software without the use of LLMs? Of course but it took years. Harnesses can use tools like Ghidra to decompile software, usually the built in safety nets will stop Claude etc. from decompiling certain software unless you tard wrangle it. Or just give it to a Chinese model.
>>
>>110188067
I don't believe any of it. "clean room" my ass. people are uploading their propretary code via claude code which is exfiltrating entire codebases and then it's getting used as training data and then it's creating a mash-up of the source code intent with a different style. it's literally plagarism 101 just change it up a bit so it doesn't look like you copied.
>>
>>110188086
>if a video feed of the screen is enough to replicate the functionality
It is. AI can describe a video and implement that based on observation. That's hose clean-room reverse engineering works. You just observe it and reproduce what you've observed into code. You don't even need to look at the binaries. Even a short video is more than enough to get the core functionality of any software.
>>
>>110188106
The people yanking demos probably don't have anything to worry about. They might even do it to help market the game as nextfest is flooded with AI slop. Nobody is going to buy an inferior knockoff of a good game. Asset flips and bad knockoffs existed before AI and they rarely made any impact.
>>
>>110188123
No I mean are LLMs only able to reverse engineer complex programs from companies who have used LLMs?
That would imply the LLMs are trained on the data from those companies even when that's not supposed to happen and when asked to reverse engineer those programs the LLM already has a lossy copy of that code on it's weights.
>>
>vibefag says they rewrote something
Yeah uh oh nope tranny your code is shit and it runs like shit because it was AI generated without you understanding any of it.
>>
>>
>>110188148

Humiliation ritual. VSCode got it right, IntelliJ is borderline unusable without the minimap extension. There's plenty of space for code. Windows 11 fucked up scrollbar designs but some programs where they're actually important like VSCode or FL Studio actually make them bigger because they understand it's necessary for good user experience.

>Video game devs are asking this exact question now
The videogame devs who ask that question are making flappy bird tier games. Making a 4 hour long videogame with a basic bitch gameplay loop and with stock assets for graphics and sound, wont gonna cut it in 2026 anyways in terms of profits. Now you are also gonna get AI'd. I guess indie devs need to step it up. And thats a good thing imo.
>>
>>110188260
I've never seen AI make anything good, especially on the frontend UI side. Most of my job involves writing code by hand to fix the janky frontend code that everyone else on the team shits out with AI. I will only use AI for writing simple functions and small scale refactoring because that's the only thing it can do that's actually useful.
>>
>>110188528
Gotta test that, probably does everything I need already since I do very basic stuff and dont even need photoshop tier editor...
>>
>>110188614
Game makers just gotta be a lot more creative. Shitting out yet another fps or rpg will not cut it in the future. Tetris was innovative, flappy bird was great, pong was the shit. Gaming is so much more than real life simulator escapism.
>>
>>110188617
Yup. AI cannot into actual aesthetics and usability. It is a tool, of course, but if no human is involved it produces shit.

You need to spend hundreds of dollars on it and thats right now while the companies hosting these agents are all getting subsidised into orbit.
Local models can't even kinda sorta do this, freetard registrations on LLMs can't do this. It has to be Claude which is currently expensive and will be getting moreso. (And also worse)

The games that have been selling well recently have been friendslop games, and I expect this trend to continue for the foreseeable future. Friends will force other friends to get the "correct" game in fear getting ostracized. Network coding has become a lot easier now too, and you don't even need your own servers anymore thanks to Steam.

Sigh.

We had this debate with the industrial revolution and 'machines' replacing man.

We had this debate with the paper press and 'book slop' replacing man.

New technology isn't scary. Its just a tool, the bad uses get banned legally and chased by law enforcement. The good use cases get found and expanded upon.

You're all basically crying that Roblox will kill the video game industry because any kid can make any game they want. Maybe people just want to pay for a Larian experience.

>>
>>110187918
Businesses and organizations need someone they can hold accountable for their decisions. Imagine every bank, firm, etc that is hiring consultants for software-related tasks right now. Do you think any of them are going to stop and start to ask prompting internally?
Who will be held accountable if something breaks? Who do you call at 5 pm when the dashboard turns red? Who can translate your wants to software? Behind "claude build me $APP" there's 100 questions that need to be answered, and non-programmers don't know them and won't reasearch them.
The price of the labor will drop because it's easier to produce, but it will still exist.
>>
>>110190103
Good luck doing stuff with frigging good tools if you do not understand even the basics. I was not saying that good coders are safe, I was saying that good software engineers who can into ai are pretty safe for now. But even they would be wise to cut frivolous spending habits and save the monies because big bucks for software is not going to last.

fps rpg are the best games though. I don't want creative faggy games. I want RPGs where I shoot people over and over again and I'm not kidding. This is what the market wants too, it's the 80/20 rule. 80% familiar 20% twist. Fully "creative" or "unique" games don't do well the great majority of the time. the clean-room design method/legal defense has been a thing since at least the 80's, when IBM would sue people for copyright infringement over their BIOS firmware. i've known about it for decades and i think it's neat (plogue inc does their excellent digital reimplementations of old audio hardware this way) but practically anyone claiming that they used an LLM to "clean-room" something with no other legal person involved is an utter fool

sounds clean until proven guilty to me unless you want to accuse the LLM providers of ingesting every piece of bytecode from every app known to man and correctly identifying the human code that produced it without transforming it one iota even to avoid accusations of impropriety. The only reason the frontiersmen decide to gate this decompilation game stuff is to avoid being the first court case that demands proof of clean room, no one wants to be first to open their books legally, obviously they'd be dumb and inefficient to use the untransformed raw dregs of proprietary learnings in their current LLMs.

That's how I felt too, but I think the last time I tried was V2. I'm wondering if they ammended any of that in V3.
Since you're quoting that part of my post, I imagine that's still the case / it's still not as good as it reasonably should be. If so, that's unfortunate.

I wonder if it's possible to do reverse engineering effectively without spending money.
I'd be willing to do it if I had money to spend on Claude, but I can't justify spending money on a project that would intend to be open source and free.
If it's possible, I'd probably put the time into taking the best features from Merge and Itellij. I'll have to look into this eventually if nobody else does it first.

i think you're right about that but still, i don't think activision would be pleased if the new cod gets a decompilation and native linux port and a sex mod within 2 days of release

Better question, whats the point of publishing source code when you can rely on strangers with LLMs to do that work for you?

This was the gayest 3hr walking simulator with no damage and shitty puzzles and it sold, it even got my pirating friend to get it. I bet shovelware isn't over

it's funny that nobody expected that an AI can't reverse engineer anything, it's literally a map from input to an output

I'm considering releasing my image and video tagging software. But it feels too powerful to give to out.

It could blow up in my face and be used to dox people including myself

I guess its just a matter of time before other people have similar, or better doxing capabilities... But a lot of chudanons here don't have the Will to code this, let alone vibe code it...

There's so much more gangstalking to be added. This doesn't even use embeddings - 4plebs' image search is quite good

I really don't need to use google/ddg images anymore. They only return politically correct results for the most part anyways. Try searching for "reminder: this is what america does.." meme. You won't find it.
>>
>>110196505
>anon this is just tag search and could be recreated in a day with opus 5.5
maybe, but I think it would take longer than that. I have other features not shown here and I've spend a significant optimizing.

Am I just an old unc now?

You are probably not familiar with the behind the scenes stuff about this game. This is another astroturfed videogame by Annapurna Interactive, aka the Mixtape publishers.
People gave it a pass because you are controlling a heckin reddit cat, and because there are lots of cat people out there who would probably want to play this (((indie))) shit. So nobody bothered to connect the dots then.

Annapurna is being funded by Megan Ellison, the daughter of billionaire and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. Draw your own conclusions
>>
>>110196505
Is it written in rust? If not, then no thanks.

Annapuma is a shotgun of stuff, but some of them hit. Journey, Kentucky Route Zero, Ashen, and Outer Wilds. Their so fucking oddball I don't know why anyone would risk on them, because they're like 1/4 for their catalog.

>What's the point in making any software closed source when it can just be instantly re-written in Rust with AI?

That's just the excuse that Big Tech wanted to move literally everything to the cloud. That alongside the overpriced hardware and fast 6G networks.

We're witnessing the death of home computing.

Give it another 10 years (or less) and all you'll be able to purchase will be a tinyass streaming cloud computing always online cuckbox. If you're lucky you'll be able to install a custom firmware and play SNES games on it, assuming they don't straight up use a hardcoded custom streaming chip instead of a general purpose ARM SoC.

has it been done? can you name a single product I can use, today?

And most of those finished games from demos are inferior to the real thing. Also assuming something is going to get done with decompiling so far the only devs who should worry are those that make simple mobile game-type games like making a Tetris but it’s rougelike with bosses and somehow snake gameplay put into it and it works, those kinds of games can be copied by just showing the gameplay to AI.

berry popular. still cool ngl

the issue with rewrites and decomps is that they'll have no future support. initial company will keep adding features but the rewrites are made by some rando in a weekend who'll move on with their lives, or die or whatever.

I remember hearing a lot of BTS on it. Thanks for telling me about the Jewish connection. Makes sense about mixtape since they're more movies as a game concept. I heard they make Edith Finch too. None of them are games, they're for Redditors who don't want to die in any game and say they finished a bunch of pop culture slop.

Isn't journey another walking simulator? I didn't hear about the other stuff but I'm pretty sure they don't make any 'games' besides maybe outer wilds but idk how you die in it and I wasn't interested. They had a lot of press for sure though. I heard about it even tho I didn't want to play it.

I cannot tell you how much that made my blood pressure spike reading that. But to your question, no, it's a game about sand, and how difficult it is to get out of carpets.

Most of the software is not feature complete and is basically just a vertical slice of working software. There are a bunch of oss text editors and notebooks although most of them started before the LLMs really took off. Notion/obsidian/evernote clones. Most notably, there are no really good onenote clones yet. Also, a bunch of B2B software like shit you would see in restaurants/factories/small retail businesses/gyms no one is talking about cloning.

Sometimes you only want to wait so long until some other faggot creates some niche code that you've been waiting for for a long time.

Creating the project means it's guaranteed to be created. You could be waiting until you're dead for some Llm faggot to come along.

i did not say observation isn't allowed in clean-rooming, only that observing while also being legally responsible for the implementation is not clean-rooming.
in this case and many other projects, the separation of responsibilities that defines the term is absent; the way "clean-room" refers specifically to that separation of observer from implementer is what i mean to criticize vibecoders for not caring to understand. hope you have a nice day

journey released on playstation 3 over seven years before annapurna picked it up to manage the PC release.

All you need to sell a game is good graphics/atmosphere. It doesnt even matter what the gameplay is. Obviously not, because the only thing people see pre-release is the graphics, which is what makes hype.
AI still hasn't gotten good at making good 3d graphics yet.

Roblox, minecraft and indie shit look like visual pixel vomit
>>
>>110199894
That is not how things work in real life. If there is no code or binary shit from the original it is by definition clean room. By your standards it would be impossible to clean room anything popular like word since everyone has used those programs. Yet libreoffice and now wordcraft exist.
>>
>>110198473
Yeah, despite them being a trust fund outlet, you are correct. I played journey on ps4 and it was decent enough for one playthrough. The problem with annapurna publisher is that they always pay to get glowing reviews for their okayish arty farty games.
Actual gamers (not moviegame snoys) couldnt understand why a game with a cat was receiving so many 10/10s and awards.
Eventually everyone figured out what was going on with Mixtape, (a nostalgiabait virtual novel but with actual real time 3d graphics) because once again it was getting extremely good reviews but has almost no gameplay.
>>
>>110199658
It's a walking simulator.
>Journey is basically a two-hour walking simulator where you play a traveler whose goal is to reach a mountain. It is a short, linear, level-based experience designed to be finished in a single sitting. It abandons traditional inventory, stats, and side quests in favor of pure atmosphere and pacing
Sounds like a skill free movie disguised as a game that critics praise.
>>
>>110200569
It's because it's a movie disguised as a game for women or women adjacent critics that give you lower scores as they lose their hp. If you only play a game once it's got nothing going on besides story/exposition.
