Debian stable and stable distros in general are what should be used on workhorse stable chinkpads, no use having a reliable computer if your os is retarded and broken, that's why Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based Linux Mint is so recommended, it's just gonna work and not have you wasting time.

I don't know much about Linux stuff but Ubuntu just works with the most hardware, it's got the wayland thing that knows how to fractional scale, where Linux Mint and other distros still on X11 don't know how to do, which makes it hard for thinkpads that don't have a 1366x768 screen to see things at 100% scale without lowering the resolution and wasting their nice screen.
    >>
    >>110186003
    >I don't know much about Linux stuff
me neither, but i dont let facts get in the way of my Lain fantasies.. debian has wayland too btw

    I use my 1080p T480 without scaling (xfce X11) and it's fine

    I got a T14s Gen 1 with a shitty keyboard.
I replaced the keyboard and my god I wish I just did an entire palmrest w/ keyboard swap. it took an ungodly amount of time. I must have fucked something up bc the trackpoint will glitch out and move. But jfc the trackpoint is shite on this thing, I use the touchpad now. Cucked for sure.

    >>
    >>110186003
Few Wayland compositors do fractional scaling right, and so text ends up looking a bit blurry no matter what you do with font config or anything else. The few that get it right are KDE Plasma and Niri, but even there it's not perfectly sharp. I haven't used GNOME in a while so I don't know about that.
The blurriness bothered me enough for me to stop using fractional scaling at the window manager level. I just set the web browser to run at a certain scale as well as increase font size in terminal emulator and so on. That way, text remains sharp. But you do get mismatched scale when you open something like your GUI file manager. Of course, you may not ever notice the blurriness, so perhaps fractional scaling in de/wm in that case is fine for you.

    >>110185927

    Does /tpg/ prefer the t480 or t480s?
Does the slower nvme read speeds on the t480 compared to the t480s make any real world difference?
    >>
    >>110193085
We prefer the T480 becsuse it has two so dimm slots for having identical ram modules in it, we also prefer the T480 when the price is right, do not buy a T480 becsuse its a T480 and you saw it in a short form content video, these things are out there for too much money ey and you can get a better laptop for what a lot of these eBay listing are asking for a complete T480 with an NVMe price and 1080p ips screen.
    >>
    >>110193085
not really a thinkpad thing, but 99% of the time it won't matter unless you have a machine with multiple NVMe drives (and even then a lot of them multiplex the lanes so it ends up gimping something regardless)
    >>
    >>110193085
T480 only if you actually make good use of double batteries and bottom docking port.
Newer Thinkpad = better spec = smoother experience by default.
    >>
    >>110193223
This, of you're looking for an old ass dual battery, dual ram slot 14nm laptop, get a T470 for less than half the price due to it not being memed, otherwise get a newer laptop, becsuse ryzen chinkpad with the goofy mismatch soldered 8GB+32GB sodimm for 40GB of ram which runs single channel after 16GB is used, is still getting things done faster than a tricked the fuck out T480 with dual 2400MHz 16GB so dimms that you'll overpay for.

    >>
    >>110194573
That's about $35 for the laptop itself without the SSD and RAM, so probably not a horrible deal. Mind the battery health though. It has two separate internal batteries for whatever reason, so replacement costs almost twice as much as usual (around $60 last I checked).
    >>
    >>110195120
The batteries are 87% and 91% capacity
    That should be good right?
    >>
    >>110193085
I've used both and didn't notice a difference in speed, though my drive is a cheapo one that doesn't go over 2.1 GB/s.

I really like the build quality of the s. It has a stiffness and premium feeling reminiscent of classic X series, while the non-s is plasticky like the T420-T430 and has a bit of flex. Non-s is the only option if you need all-day battery though.

should I buy a T440 or X230 for around 60$ each? both would be a tinkering machine, not as my main, but the X230 would be in slightly worse consition (hdd, broken plastic) while the T440 has an ssd and no visible defects. thanks!

Did I overpay by buying a T14 generation 2 with the Ryzen 7 5850U, 1TB SSD and 16 GB of RAM for $538? Either way, how much could I reasonably get for a T470 with an i5-7200U, 8 GB of RAM and both 9-cell and 6-cell batteries?
    >>
    >>110198351
    >1TB SSD
Worth it, my main rig is running a 512GB sata piece of shit from like 2014 and it's not even portable Your lovely T470 would sell real easily at $100 compared to the ones that are SSD stripped, I would just keep the thing if it's a lovely IPS screen, use it as your beater laptop.
    >>
So I got a T470P recently and it has 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD and FHD touch screen. I put Windows 10 on one partition but what Linux distro should I put on my other partition for this particular laptop? I'm not really good at picking a distro at all. It has i7-7700HQ and NVIDIA Geforce 940MX.
    >>
    >>110198484
    It's a TN screen but it's 1080p.
    >>
    >>110198604
You should drop that whack ass Windows 10 and Install Linux Mint Cinnamon XFCE over everything, either that or Ubuntu which has proper 125% scaling support and looks beautiful on the 14 inch FHD screen.
    >>
    >>110198673
That's still a lovely little laptop Anon, and who says it has to stay at 8GB? a T470 with 16GB dual channel after simply adding another 8GB SODIMM, or even 32GB shoved in there is a badass little machine.
    >>
    >>110198686
Well, keep your eyes on eBay and you just might see it there :)
    >>
    >>110198694
Based, I would buy it but I already have 8 of them with 1080p IPS screens, but if you're selling a complete T470 with the Kaby chip, FHD screen, SSD, and working batteries for a non crack price, it will sell.

It's Win 10 IoT LTSC and it occupies a small partition for maximum compatibility with other things and I'm not ever dropping Windows. I was thinking of Mint too but what about ones like Fedora, Debian, or Arch? I remember though installing NVIDIA is notoriously difficult and frustrating in many distros.
    >>
    >>110198787
I feel you, my T470 has a bunch of RAM in it because I keep a Windows 7 VM around to run old shit I can't live without, Fedora with GNOME on it is pretty good, and because it's GNOME with Wayland and shit, the scaling it nice.
    >>
    >>110198801
Oh nice. My giant P51 runs Windows 7 still and it's still working very well and smoothly, but I can't go around carrying that outside. Fedora does seem nice when I tried it although I did the KDE edition back then. I run Mint XFCE on another laptop so maybe I'll go and give Fedora another try.
    >>
    >>110198849
    >My giant P51 runs Windows 7
Based, I forgot the skylakes were the last with official support, if you're familiar with Mint XFCE, I'd stick with it because it's the bomb and I run it on the T470, it can't fractional scale for shit but it's so great to use on a FHD screen and it just works.
    >>
    >>110198873
Yeah Skylake's the final officially supported one, but mine's actually Kaby Lake but I got it to work properly and even the Quadro M2200 on NVIDIA 472.12, although the latter is unsigned unfortunately. Getting 7 to work was a lot of pain initially but everything after it was installed was smooth sailing.

So Mint is best with the FHD screen? Gotcha. That sounds best because of how easy that distro is to work with.
    >>

    >>110202183
True, I kinda wish people would stop treating it like the anti macbook and paying too much for them because they want to make a statement and not have faggy apple, it is a goddamn computer.
    >>
    >>110202239
I've also found other forgotten old laptops of that era mainly in friends' forgotten attics and their build quality is atrocious. It feels like the plastic out of fake toy laptops for children, and they break if you look at them funny. One of them had the both of its metal hinges crack, because I had the audacity of trying to open the screen. Thinkpads on the other hand, even the ones that were obviously rotting deep inside some junkyard and were a nesting ground for roaches for a couple of decades, were intact and worked perfectly just by cleaning them and dedusting them.
Sure it's a cult and it pisses me off how much overpriced even e-waste-tier Thinkpads have become, but there's a valid reason behind the reputation.
    >>
    >>110202551
The durability is really what were after, but the problem arises when people who don't care about having a good computer start buying Thinkpads because everybody as Apple and they wanna be a lil fucking hipster, and then Lenovo itself makes a $1900 25th anniversary because "The thinkpad is the enemy of trendiness" It's no bro, if Apple made a computer that didn't get one shotted when dropped on the ground, or gets any bit of liquid in it, we would be glad, we don't buy thinkpad because it's thinkpad, or at least people shouldn't be buying thinkpad because it's thinkpad, you buy it so your fucking computer doesn't break and does what it needs to do.
    >>
    >>110202551
doesn't have apple aesthetics though, those things you can just put in a corner and have it looking pretty and not an eyesore
    >>
    >>110202132
    >an era where things went obsolete really fast
In the early 00s when the T30 was released that trend had begun slowing down. A 90s machine was completely unworkable in the 00s, but a 00s machine could barely hang on during the 10s, and we live in times where 10s machines can handle the 20s relatively fine.
I'm not implying that the T30 is viable in present day. Machines on similar specs can just barely run firefox with a couple of tabs, but it's just enough to shitpost on 4chin. I mainly want it because it's essentially the fastest machine that is compatible with old 90s shit, software and hardware alike.

we're in agreement then. It's just a case of its genuine reputation feeding the hype, sometimes more than it really deserves it.

That shouldn't even hurt it, consumer laptops are just straight up trash, i get thinkpads used for business, and then processed through recycling facility where theyre not gentle with it to the point where i gotta re-seat the keyboard, and the screens are still beautiful.
    >>
    >>110203006
I have a MSI laptop too that I bought in 2020. the laptop itself is still working fine, no issue with the keyboard, screen, hinges, plastics or anything but
    >already changed the battery TWICE because it was swollen. the current one is also swollen but I don't give a fuck anymore
    >because of the swollen battery clicking the trackpad is hard af (I use it with a mouse anyway since I'm just using it as a home server nowadays)
    >factory-built I couldn't use the Nvidia GPU without losing wifi completely because those dumb fucks put one of the wifi antennas right under the Nvidia GPU. I had to relocate that antenna
I'll never buy MSI again. I found a cheap T470 a few days ago and I'm tempted to buy it to use as my server and sell the MSI instead

yeah the pcg u101 is awesome, will probably get one of those at some point also. mainly interested in the p series because it has both windows and some lightweight media os. i do have a vaio ux which is pretty comfy ive seen they can be upgraded to a c2d and 2gb ram but i dont have those kinds of soldering skills kek
    >>
    >>110203982
don't know if I'll get it or not. I checked and it's not a T470 but a L470, and I thought it shared batteries with the T480 (it doesn't come with it and I had one spare) but apparently not
    >>
    >>110204068
It could still be a little badass if you can get it since it can hold 32GB of RAM, my 7300U is no beast but if my coffee lake rig were to somehow be destroyed I could at least have a dual core computer that can have as much shit running as my desktop and not bog down due to the 32GB RAM.
    >>
    >>110204089
I don't think I'd put 32GB in it anyway, I already have a 64GB T480 and 32GB A485. like I said I'd be using it as a replacement for the MSI as my server and sell the MSI
also it's a 6th gen i5 6200U, which I know will be enough for that use. as far as I can see on the listing it comes with a 128GB SATA SSD (should be enough), no RAM (I have spares), dead battery, 768p screen, and the keyboard isn't backlit. great physical shape though. seller is asking 75€ for it
    >>
    >>110204125
That's a totally appropriate price for a complete L470 with a a SATA drive in it in good condition these are great lil mini computers that just to happen to have a screen that you can dedicate to low power tasks and why I keep several of them.
    >>
    >>110204193
eh, I'll see what I do when I get paid next week. seller is also accepting offers so I'll probably try to haggle a few bucks off. only thing that kinda bothers me is the non-working battery (which I could've replaced if it used the same ones as the T470/480 since I have a space), but after looking it seems to take X270 batteries instead

I wouldn't sweat the batteries on Kaby lake era chinkpads, you get em cheaper, I think these things days of being a portable are over due to lack of OEM Li-ON batts, leave it to the new stuff to run on batteries and use these as the lovely low power PC they are

    >>
    >>110204415
done. 70€ including shipping. apparently it's in rough shape but I don't mind that, it's for using a server anyway, won't be looking at it that much (I still mostly use my fully modded T480)
    >>
    >>110204495
Based, my main T470 is the roughest one with a 768p screen simply because it works and wouldn't piss me off that much if it got destroyed or stolen due to beater laptop.

looking for something in similar size and price if possible. it's for a little kid, to learn how to type and use a computer in general (first computer, disposable, etc.). Other than a very locked down 'internet' experience, it basically just needs to connect to a NAS to stream video (or at the very least play video). Moreso for learning how to use and type on a computer, fuck tablets.

    >$100
Since you posted on /tpg/, your only choice close to that 11.6 inch size is the X-series. You *might* find a used X270 or a X280 in that price, definitely if you add $50 to your budget. There aren't other /tpg/ choices really, maybe some old Thinkpad Yoga 11e (chromebook) or something but I'm not very knowledgeable about that series of laptops.
    >>
    >>110206094
Any X13/X200 series laptop will do.
Due to smaller bezel, X13 is about the same size as that laptop despite having bigger screen.

WTF, I remember these being, like, ~$50 a few years ago.

They're fuck-off expensive now, and for scissor switches at that. At that price point, might as well buy a Tex keyboard.

    I haven't owned a ThinkPad in 20years.

Now I wanna get one again for coding and Linux shenanigans.

    I'm between T480 or T14 G2.
T480 is cheaper and "looks" more robust, which is important as I'm gonna carry it around a lot(my old ThinkPad died of flexing back in the day).

But the price difference is around 150€.
    Which would /tpg/ go for?
    >>
    >>110210087
I would get the T14 G2 AMD, that 7nm technology is very far ahead of intel 14nm, a 14nm intel thinkpad like T460/T470/T480 is really hard to justify unless its extremely cheap because a laptop 3 years newer with Zen3 chips just smacks it around so hard, you're literally doubling the performance and using the same 15w of power.
    >>
    >>110210195
    Thanks anon

    >>110210087
I use a T480 for my job with a heavy IDE running + browser with multiple tabs + 16 GB and it's coping surprisingly good despite that demanding workload.
T14 G2 is probably a better choice and what I would personally go for in present day. Its CPU (and especially the AMD versions some of which have 1.5x-2x more cores) is twice as fast in benchmarks with the same TDP.

Still if you decide to go for the cheaper and still viable T480, make sure the T480 you buy is the 4-core 8XXXU version. There are some T480 models that have the 2-core 7300U for some reason; they're trash.

    >There are some T480 models that have the 2-core 7300U for some reason; they're trash
Kek thankfully theyre tare but i once did witness an ebay auction where retards memed by social media were bidding up a T480 with the 7300U well beyond what ive ever paid for a tricked out FHD 7300U backlit NVMe T470, not even knowing the motherfucker can't run windows 11 officially and its just slower, that's how much of a meme the T480 is, and its not a good thing because people are overpaying for outdated shit specifications at a level worse than with an Apple laptop, which is unbelievable.

I found an innolux model instead of auo that should provide 1500:1 contrast, 400nit and has a glossy model. Trying to get the chinks at bliss to confirm anything is difficult and at this point I'll settle for matte if I have to
    >>
    >>110210087
Practically any laptop now is significantly more robust than 20 years ago. I bought a NOS R52 thinking le epic 4:3 and it was squeaky and flimsy. You could buy something cheap today and regret a lot more before you found an issue with durability

    >>110210087
I have a t420s and a t14 gen 2. The iris xe is worth it. I wouldn't reccomend anything less than iris xe at this point it is that good. Passmark multicore on the t14 gen 2 i5 is like ~10k. A modern t14 is ~20k. The t480s is ~6k multicore. These are big differences. A 3600 for reference was ~18k. I think the t14 gen 2 is good value if you have spare ram and nvmes laying around like I do and can get one for ~$200. Then just drop in a 16gb stick to go to 24gb ram and whatever gen3 or 4 nvme you have.

They were only 16:10 for a generation or two mate. You don't want any of the earlier ones anyways the graphics chips all fail. T500, W500, M4400, E6500. The first gen I series were known to run hot, and you can undervolt the core 2's quite a bit. Kiss any 5ghz wifi goodbye, as well as any web browser running on windows, 4gb ddr2 laptop ram sticks are hens teeth, you'll be lucky to have 8gb. The dells had optional slice batteries for epic battery life, which as far as I know only came on the smaller laptops from HP and IBM
    >>
    >>110216632
This, don't fuck around using an old laptop just to get a 16:10 screen, My latitude E6400 was great but it only had 4GB of RAM, and the 5GHz wifi card it did have would do about 100mbps, where as on a Kaby Lake Chinkpad it pegs out my 540mbps internet, if he is into a 16:10 screen, he's gonna have to get a newer laptop because that is the best one with the 16:10 screen.
