Who gives a shit, why are we not talking about the actual important things, huh? Is there anybody here that still gives a shit about freedom and privacy in computing?
Like the US KIDS act and EU KIDS act for example or all the other regulations in all kinds of other countries (all similar and at same time globally I am sure it's a coincidence right) whose purpose is to make it impossible to use any computer which runs an operating system or any website or other internet service without identifying yourself by using either a document or a government app, and of course this means that you will not be able to develop and distribute any of that without having to become an enforcer of this system, and don't think it only applies to kids because it you don't identify yourself you will be treated as a minor automatically.

those different meanings under the same name

    > In contrast, federal US regulation historically approaches child online safety through data privacy constraints and consent mandates, exemplified by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Rather than restructuring product mechanics across multiple age tiers, US standards traditionally rely on a single age threshold of 13, requiring platforms to secure verifiable parental consent before collecting personal data or targeting children. While emerging proposals like the US KIDS Act and the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) aim to limit algorithmic recommendations for minors up to age 16, US federal policy remains primarily focused on data collection limits, balancing safety rules against First Amendment protections and platform standard-of-knowledge requirements.

digi-tards would probably re-locate to US and EU would keep running their sharia internetus

    >why are we not talking about the actual important things, huh? Is there anybody here that still gives a shit about freedom and privacy in computing?

Problem with that is that this doesn't just affect social media, it affects any operating system, application or web service, no matter the size, if you don't verify yourself you will be automatically categorized as a minor and get at restricted experience.
This will definitely kill 4chan, funnily enough the big tech platform like social media will have all the tools to comply with the regulations, most of it is already implemented, it will be the medium and small websites and projects that will be fucked over the most, no more anonimity for you either.
    >>
    >>110180955
What's stopping me from making a website that doesn't comply with their regulations? What, are they going to aggressively take me down?
Better prepare for a whole new influx of people coming over to the dark web then!
    >>
    >>110180955
the legal famework to even begin to try to enforce any of this this has more holes than swiss cheese. the focus will be on the big players in tech/social media because they have the biggest money and liability painted on their backs. it will get tied up in years of lawsuits and injunctions from every litigator under the sun, and the little guy will continue to ride in the margins just like is already happening with state age laws, just like is going on several decades with music industry kikes and dmca, just like what happened in prohibition, just like what happened in fucking roman sumptuary laws. we love to signal civic virtues while leaving the root behavior unaddressed and impossible to enforce because there's one public servant shaneequa for every thousand violators and she's more interested in doing her nails that morning than writing up a bad goy rap sheet for you specifically.
and no I am not anonymous but it literally doesn't matter, my ssn dob name address credit history are all out there and leaked and nobody cares. my isp is more than happy to take my money and shut the fuck up.
    nothing ever happens
    >>
    >>110181001
In the end we don't know what the enforcement will be, but yeah basically you would be violating the law, for all we know they might identify who own the server and raid your home at 6AM for "endangering the children" or whatever, they can already do this, police already has dedicated units that do this for cp, they just have to scale up, just like they did with antidrug when they started the war on drugs for example.
    >new influx of people coming over to the dark web then
That might be a possible outcome, assuming overlay networks like Tor and I2P hold against attacks and assuming people do switch to them instead of just complying and verifying themselves and moving on with their day.

    >whose purpose is to make it impossible to use any computer which runs an operating system or any website or other internet service without identifying yourself by using either a document or a government app

First of all, EU Kids act does not literally require you to identify yourself to anyone, in fact it specifies zero-knowledge proofs as a necessity for whichever age verification implementation gets approved.
The EU digital identity wallet runs an open source, zero-knowledge proof token generator to maximize privacy.
The government can't know what you're using your token for, the website can't trace who issued the token. They've implemented plenty of measures to make it theoretically impossible to fingerprint you.

This process is very benign compared to what websites usually require you to do, e.g. uploading a picture of your face or ID. In fact, it's telling websites like X.com that they're not allowed to age-proof their content with methods that compromise someone's anonymity.
Ironically enough, KIDS Act enforces privacy.

Secondly, in the case that the law passes through parliament, it will see several major revisions that would very likely make concessions for specific types of software, including non-commercial distros.

All that said, you can still criticize the regulation for a myriad of reasons other than what is stated above.
However, you (and many others) are arguing from a poor premise, so let's get that straight.

    >>110180379
Kids watching pornography is just convenient collateral.
The EU KIDS act primarily addresses access to social media by children, so the fear porn (pun unintended) here is moreso about social media addiction, grooming and political extremism among youth than literal porn.

Unless you want to be a hermit with no job and even no neetbux, your ID is going into a database somewhere, even if you've only ever presented it offline where someone likely scanned it.
An ID isn't usually sufficient anyway for trying to defraud someone. Without you physically present it's not very high value because the whole idea is you are there to physically match what's on the ID.

That's how an I9 is dealt with and every other time I had to present an ID you also had to take a live selfie. That's a yearly thing at my current job that ID has to be verified every year.

Every time someone gets a copy of an ID do you really think it's just for a physical copy to only go into a filing cabin and never leave? Nope that's also being preserved digitally.

The US/EU KIDS acts are basically using "think of the children" as a "smokescreen" to undermine privacy and freedom of expression online. It doesn't help that bad parenting is rampant with parents sticking their kids in front of a computer and calling it done.
I wasn't any different from iPad kids. But in my defense the neighborhood I grew up in as a kid didn't have any boys my age to play games with. The only one was an exception and he was periodically dropped off at his grandmother's house which was in my neighborhood.
    It sucked.
You'd think that iPad raised kids effects would have been studied and signs of it have been clearly documented. I probably share some effects of it.

With that being said I think privacy and criminal activity has always been in an awful tug of war with normal harmless people always losing in the end. It has just shifted to the cyberspace "battleground" instead. So it was inevitable that the US/EU KIDS acts would come. I'm surprised it hasn't come sooner but maybe AI has something to do with it happening sooner now.

IDs in the US are the primary way you have to do most any official business with the state (individual state, not federal). It's also how businesses ID you, Epic is an electronic health record system and ID is just one of documents needed to deal with Medicaid and heath insurance.

Every time you get a job there is a form called the I9 used to identify that you are a US citizen or are authorized to work. IDs are also kept in record when doing background checks.
These used to be done physically but they are all digital now so an ID is likely stored somewhere.

I'm more fascinated as to why it seems controversial that an ID is presented and might kept somewhere, in the US it's pretty normal and understood that an ID itself while unpleasant to be leaked, is of little consequence and presents not much more info than if you used a real name and address to buy something on Amazon.

Your SSN/TIN is where real consequences are but that's only ever presented seldomly relating to tax or income.

The other issue is also having your posts, and what is algorithmically fed to you (or hidden from you) tied to your IRL ID with no possible recourse. Just wait for Woke 3, or until social media companies start deliberately constructing false realities for certain people (anyone in contact with any Congressman or Senator of a certain party, for example) or by gender, ethnicity, and so on.

This is not just about ID leaks for identity theft, or even merely doxxing. This is a danger even to powerful figures, both via blackmail and the construction of falsified realities.

And also doxxing, cancel culture, leaks, and so on. It literally accomplishes everything but getting kids off devices (as parents will just scan themselves into their iPads lol).
    >>
    >>110190498
Unless you want to argue it's just boiling the frog slowly, most companies are literally trying to avoid having to use IDs at all. It would make sense that they also have very little to no intention that if they did use an ID that it would be linked to actual account content.

Bought-off AGs will force them to retain it to "check compliance", see that suit where Paxton claimed that because ChatGPT was harvesting and using too much data, that they should be forced to ID every user of it in Texas. Because that makes sense.

And of course, if you give it, they will use it. In theory, something like the EUDI may work, but there will ofc be backdoors and hacks (EUDI's prototype was already hacked IIRC). The US, ofc, will have nothing like that for years (I think I saw something similar being touted by the FCC as a prototype, but a very early one).

Part of it is "Lemons out of Lemonade", particularly for real-name-focused incumbents like Meta, to try to steer this moral panic in a way that benefits them and harms or kills their rivals (e.g. Reddit or Xitter or YouTube).

There needs to be more of a visible public backlash, like with SOPA/PIPA, or this is the way it'll go. Courts are still filled with Boomers and Xoomers for whom social media is Facebook and Instagram; doxxing is a given.

So all I can do is pray, for I do not have the courage, following, or skills to affect this myself.

That, and suggest a course of action to others who may carry this forward.

...to say nothing of children themselves; we'll be back to square one with parents being permissive using their own IDs, as kids are not allowed to go outside on their own as they were before the digital age, and this will not be changed.

We live in a hell of our own making, a jail, and these scum want to add chainmail-reinforced glass to the windows, to choke out the fresh air; and this goes for the kids first and foremost. Unthinkingly sleepwalking off a cliff.

What previously could be done with a bot farm of phones now must be done with stolen IDs, tying their slop to unfortunate victims of leaks.

All of those low-hanging caches of IDs waiting to be picked will be used to fake IDs on other social media platforms, a demand created exclusively as a result of these laws.

That doesn't explain the radio silence from sites like Wikipedia or here, or from sites that are (somewhat) dependent on lower barriers to entry (such as Reddit).

To say nothing of the plethora of smaller forums. Force-doxxing the internet reduces it to FB/IG/TikTok, or sites indistinguishable from such, and accounts are increasingly required to even *view* content.

The particulars of this could gut some Big Tech groups and massively benefit others; the silence is still eerie and horrifying.

Your ISP doesn't attach that to particular usernames in perpetuity with a facial scan. IPs are commonly reassigned and so on, your face is not.

The typical force-doxxing methods are face scans, IDs, and credit card checks; all of those are far more intimate, and liability is typically placed on the social media platform to collect it in association with an account.

The morbid part is that the children themselves go online because without that, they have nothing. Their parents don't even let them play on the street, and they often don't have siblings. I know because I was one. But what will the internet be replaced with? Nothing.

In fact, this is why I said that most parents will just use themselves to verify to get their kids back on the internet; because there isn't really an alternative activity for said children.

Now they have Life360 total tracking in real life, and soon (god forbid) Diddy Laws on the internet - which makes the obvious rhetorical question to ask - how can they live if even stepping out of the home creates risk - the unironic position of safetyists like this. They are and this is the closest thing to that Phineas and Ferb multi-part episode wherein all children are locked inside pods until they reach adulthood; this is the closest thing to that physically possible.

But a life without risk is itself a risk - a risk of living without living and dying without dying. A retirement home society built to suck the joy out of anyone younger than 40, even something as modest as a bulletin board forum.

Absolutely disgusting. So many people will claim to care about the children but twist the knife in their backs; promising an end to slop but ensuring none but it can survive.

What world are you creating? Have you thought about the endpoint of this, or the second and third order effects of this and other things you almost certainly support? Did you even think to ask this?

NTA but children don't go outside due to an erosion of places they can actually go out.
There are too many people on a hair trigger over any type of anything happening on or around their property. Even if as kids they played in the street.
Public spaces are also getting so locked down if not entirely disappeared.
People can argue as to why but it's not like parents don't want kids to go out, it's just too much of a headache dealing with shitty people who don't want kids to have any fun anywhere.

I don't entirely disagree with the idea there should be something done with kids in online spaces. I say this as someone who did have unregulated internet in my early teens,

Most kids are generally retarded and the issue isn't them speaking their opinion, but most will immediately get themselves absolutely mind fucked on the clearnet.

Back in the day when the internet wasn't as accepted this was self-regulating as if you were caught jerking 24/7 or saying nigger every other sentence you were cut off. This basically gatekept the internet to those who had some level of mental faculties to hide what they did online.

Of course, the issue now is that it's basically expected everyone has internet 24/7 all the time. You can't reasonably take it away. The parents are also too apathic to do anything.

So unless you want the average IQ to even be more fucked up then they are. There needs to be some level of gatekeeping because the lowest common dominator isn't much of anything to try to bypass it, but those people are also going to need to be herded in some way away from the open internet because they can't control themselves and handle it.
Those who bypass any verification and don't catch flak and control themselves have earned their place,
    >>
    >>110210458
This is true, and even when lawmakers notionally pass laws to the contrary, they seem to be ignored. Just look at that Virginia woman who did that exact thing and got targeted for arrest.

    >bypass any verification
Well, when you make it legally mandatory, with large fines for violations, it becomes nigh-impossible to bypass, any exceptions shut down. And good luck finding any released bypasses without social media in the first place.

Somewhere like this would be shut down under such a legal regime sooner or later.

If you want to shut down the slop hose, try to get parents to stop physically giving devices to sub-10-13 year olds, or ban/restrict short-form-video platforms. But they don't seem to want to do that.

    >Just like how children can buy alcohol and cigarettes, right? Oh wait, they can't.
The reason why you don't walk into people's houses and see kids openly smoking and drinking alcohol is because it's a cultural taboo. You'd be seen as an absolute fucking degenerate if you let your kids do that shit.

The problem with enforcing ID verification for social media platforms is that there's multiple ways around it, all of which are easy. With alcohol and cigarettes, you'd need to either steal it or get someone to buy it for you. These are physical goods that need to be acquired, and all the methods to do it underage involve risk. From a kid's perspective, the risk being is that your parents come down on you hard and you lose certain privileges (e.g. no Nintendo for you).

With accessing social media without an ID, there's zero risk. You can just tunnel your network traffic through something that'll mask your IP (e.g. VPN, proxy, Tor) and shazam, you're on social media again. There isn't even risk from the parents, often parents do not give a fuck if their kid is on Facebook. This is the problem. The government is attempting to do the job of the parents, and this same government can't even configure a school network to stop kids from surfing Facebook there.

So now what you have is these insane solutions where it becomes harder to protect children because in some cases they're now a lot harder to identify online. There's now an incentive for children to learn OPSEC and keep their identities concealed to evade the banhammer. Beforehand, there was *zero* incentive and you knew where most of these people were most of the time.

What needs to be done to protect le children is to make unsupervised internet access the same cultural taboo as smoking and drinking alcohol. If you're a parent who lets your kids have their prefrontal cortex smoothed out by MrBeast, you ought to be looked at with the same disgust as the trailer trash who lets their kids smash six packs.
    >>
    >>110213017
I mean, back when I was a kid on the internet I would never, ever tell anyone I was a kid. I knew monsters lurked those waters, that isn't new. What this does is make that OPSEC impossible.

They'll probably (IIRC Ofcom is already demanding it) demand crackdowns on VPN users on social media. Maybe the CIA trying to cultivate audiences in Mainland China or Iran et al. will shitcan it. That is why TOR is publically available, after all.

I don't get it w/r/t Facebook, isn't doxxing mandatory there? OPSEC there is definitionally practically impossible. Twitter pre-biometric/app signup or Reddit would be better examples, desu.

Anyways, if they at least try to appear to not preserve facial scans, then expect adult anons to go bribe junkies to scan their faces, the same way straw purchasers exist for IRL age-restricted goods.

Also ahead of you on the taboo front, that's how I look at people who like vertical short-form video. I saw it spread in my school in ~the late 2010s, decided it was cancer, and resolved to never go there. Even if I see one for context, I buffer through it and read the captions. Depending on how this goes, and the precise way these laws are written, it could kill small forums or cause a bloom of them; I certainly hope it is the latter.

Alas, the parents themselves often use this stuff, so the taboo may not catch on. It's hard to condemn something for your kid if you're constantly watching TikTok or Reels yourself.

It's part of the regression to a 3rd world society, except now enhanced by tech. As the population keeps being dumbed down no one needs a PC anymore. I had a nigger roommate who only had a phone. When I asked him if had a computer its like he didn't know what it was. He just sat in his room, looking at his phone, all day long. We won't need computers anymore

    >the legal famework to even begin to try to enforce any of this this has more holes than swiss cheese
You’re an idiot. All it would take is to get a handful of major hardware manufacturers and software/social media companies in line. Compared to the internet of 2026, that essentially all economic and social life runs on, the music industry of the early 2000’s was minuscule. Very soon you’ll need verified hardware and a digital passport to get online or connect to anyone at all. It’s not the same as tacit acceptance of covert surveillance and you know it.

Yup. It's the difference between a guy watching a crowd from a roof and the TSA. Systematization and centralized chokepoints...
