A general for displays that don't blast light directly into your eyes. E-ink, reflective LCDs, RLCD, transflective displays, frontlit e-paper, projectors, and other alternatives to conventional self-emissive or backlit screens. Discuss hardware, comparisons, eye strain, PWM flicker, lighting conditions, frontlights, projection setups, mods, DIY projects, and daily drivers.Headache, migraine, eye-strain-free devices. No backlit displays or CRTs allowed. No conventional LED-backlit LCDs, OLEDs, or CRT monitors. Frontlights are allowed, as are projectors. Note: projection means looking at light reflected off a surface rather than directly at a screen emitting light. Ambient lighting, screen size, throw distance, and brightness still matter. The goal is finding displays that are genuinely comfortable for extended use, not just products marketed as eye-friendly.>Reading(1) Rakuten Kobo Clara BW + KOReader: a great starting point for e-ink reading. >>110178082that looks comfy, are there any that can read CRBs?

I plan to buy an e-reader phone if/when they become more affordable. I think the only realistic option at the moment is the Bigme HiBreak.

>>110178082>no CRTs allowedCRTs unironically are the most comfortable gaming monitors ever produced. Unlike on sample&hold tech like LCDs or OLEDs, the motion is never blurred, not even at 60hz, which eliminates the "your eye trying to focus an unfocusable image" phenomenon which gives you that burning sensation behind your eyes after an extended gaming session. If you've ever tryharded any FPS game on a 60hz panel you know very well what I mean. Cathode ray tubes are entirely free of that due to their unique lack of motion blur. The strobe might initially be uncomfortable but that is something your eye will eventually have no problem adapting to.

anybody have experience with small transflective color lcds for raspberry pi? I’d like something low power but without the abysmal color pallets and refresh times of e-ink.
>>110180539Even though it's a shitty, 40-year-old, blurry display, it's still WAY better for your eyes than modern displays. The only thing you need to be careful about is the viewing distance, since the screen is so small. Minors, in particular, may be at a higher risk of developing myopia if they hold small screens like those on the GB/GBC too close to their eyes. It's better to use an original 40-pin Game Boy Advance, which reflects light better (pic related). Alternatively, you could use a DS Phat, which also supports DS games.
>>110185222That screen looks amazing, man. I wish for a modern Game Boy like that, because I don't care at all about modern gaming.
None of the retro handhelds use the same screen type as the original GBA?
>>110187047the chinkhelds? nah those are recycled ewaste. they buy up pallets of whatever chips and screens then can get for cheap and then they slop them together
>>110186327I had a launch model GBA and the screen was absolute dogshit. The GBC was far superior, and the swancrystal was about on par with that. Nintendo really cheaped out for the GBA.
>>110187186>I had a launch model GBA and the screen was absolute dogshit.Indeed, it is. It’s very dark, but you probably had an original 32-pin GBA (Panasonic screen). That’s why I mentioned that the 40-pin version (Sharp screen) is the one to buy.
>>110185222someone online is doing a greyscale e-ink gameboy emulator. it seems super cool, if only he'd release it publicly. i wonder how long the display will last at 30fps though, he only tested it for like <1day. https://youtu.be/XiZmM6hwwAU
>>110187260 (me)oh he did release it https://github.com/kuslota/InkBoy
>>110186327>it's still WAY better for your eyes than modern displaysIt's literally not, you need to take your meds. It strains my eyes to look at a dogshit display I can barely see from most angles than to look at a normal screen. It's a lot shittier experience too.
>>110187701I'm sorry, but the science is clear. It's even a matter of common sense: emissive screens are worse for your eyes during prolonged use. They cause migraines, headaches, neck pain, a foreign-body sensation in the eyes, and dry eyes. All of that without even mentioning PWM in modern displays. For some people, using them for a standard eight-hour workday is literally impossible. This isn't a matter of opinion, it's the current state of the science. The problem is that alternatives are expensive, so the market gives you a cheap LCD instead. You'll look at your goyscreen and you'll be goyhappy.
>>110185222>>110186418The playdate uses a Sharp Memory LCD which is also found on the Pebble watch. This kind of display is very good tech that deserves to be disambiguated from e-ink.
>>110180255Thanks I was thinking about this video yesterday
>>110185599What's your gripe with polarization, genuinely asking?
>>110178082Not all LCD displays are bad. Modern LCDs are incredibly harsh on the eyes, but there are some pretty eye friendly displays from the mid 2000s
>>110187260that is so cool
>>110178082dug up my old gameboy advance spmodel is AGS-001only cartridge that i still have is Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coinsi have failed to beat the witches castle for the last like 25 yearswhat is the actual use case for this console today?
Why is reflected light somehow better than emitted? Is there some property imbued into the photons when they reflect off of a surface? Or some evil essence that's emitted by light sources, but gets absorbed by the surfaces of non-emitting screens? The photons that reflect off of an eink tablet are the same photons as get emitted by the backlight.
The power button on my Kobo Clara shell is wearing out. Can I just replace it with a piece of nonconductive rubber?
>>110190753My eyes hurt, &headachesThe phone im looking at now gives me headaches, and somebody has some explaining to do
>>110178082I literally stare at screens 16 hours a day and never get eye strain or headaches. you are a big pussy nigger bitch. cease all use of technology immediately and stop going outside faggot
>>110192582How do you know it's from polarization?
>>110187701Your eyes are shit even before you played a gameboy
>>110192393It's the amount and how they blend in with the surroundings.
This thread is literally worse than audiophiles. One post claims PWM is bad, the second post says only 00s LCDs were good (THEY WERE ALL PWMd CCFLs), third post claims they can sense polarization and the fourth froths at mouth over fluoride rays or something.
i've had Kobo Clara HD + KOReader since 2022, easily the best piece of tech i ownare color eink displays good nowadays? i've been meaning to migrate comic/manga reading from phone
>>110192830You have to understand what you're getting into. The standard color panels (Kaleido) work via filter arrays and as a result the colors are washed out and the image darker than the b&w panels. It's bad if you want vibrant colors but if you just want to be able to tell colors apart it's a good option.
>>110192862i usually save the pages i like to look at on other devices so it's not a problem, any specific device recommendations? are the kobo ones good?
>>110192889Boox Note Air 6C.Kobo still doesn't have a 10" color reader, which should be the minimum size for comics and manga.
>>110192393i'm not a physicist but reflected sunlight is defo better than emitted backlickt. Full spectrum, high CRT, no flicker (PWM)...
>>110192650So would a well calibrated ambient light sensor that matches the emittance of an emitting display to what a reflective display would reflect also solve the problem?
Anyone use the Daylight DC1? I've been fascinated by it, hovered around the buy page. Stopped because it's $700 and I don't really have a particular need for it. Just looks kinda neat.
>>110193558Can you even see anything on that thing?
>>110193558The Daylight just uses a regular non-backlit LCD.It loses 90% of the light that hits it, so it looks nowhere near as good as e-ink.Here's a real pic of one compared to their misleading marketing images.
yall retarded, i bought used GBC and then the second i got it i ripped the old display, threw it in garbage and installed newest laminated IPS display... and is bigger than original... it looks way better
>>110192634Because i have tried multiple monitors, and the ones with polarized lights give me head aches in the long run. You can test if it is polarized with sunglasses. Take the sunglasses and look though them, and twist them to se if the light gets filtered.
>>110192669>>110192634>>110194507Also i work and game infront of the computer, at least 12hours a day. My setup has changed, and it went from constant headaches to almost nether(unless im looking at my fucking phone)
